The development of fluorescence labeling techniques has attracted widespread interest in various fields, including biomedical science as it can facilitate high‐resolution imaging and the spatiotemporal understanding of various biological processes. We report a supramolecular fluorescence labeling strategy using luminescent metal‐phenolic networks (MPNs) constructed from metal ions, phenolic ligands, and common and commercially available dyes. The rapid labeling process (<5 min) produces ultrathin coatings (≈10 nm) on diverse particles (e.g. organic, inorganic, and biological entities) with customized luminescence (e.g. red, blue, multichromatic, and white light) simply through the selection of fluorophores. The fluorescent coatings are stable at pH values from 1 to 8 and in complex biological media owing to the dominant π interactions between the dyes and MPNs. These coatings exhibit negligible cytotoxicity and their strong fluorescence is retained even when internalized into intracellular compartments. The emergence of high‐throughput DNA sequencing technologies sparked a revolution in the field of genomics that has rippled into many branches of the life and physical sciences. The remarkable sensitivity, specificity, throughput, and multiplexing capacity that are inherent to parallel DNA sequencing have since motivated its use as a broad‐spectrum molecular counter. A key aspect of extrapolating DNA sequencing to non‐traditional applications is the need to append nucleic‐acid barcodes to entities of interest. In this review, we describe the chemical and biochemical approaches that have enabled nucleic‐acid barcoding of proteinaceous and non‐proteinaceous materials and provide examples of downstream technologies that have been made possible by DNA‐encoded molecules. As commercially available high‐throughput sequencers were first released less than 15 years ago, we believe related applications will continue to mature and close by proposing new frontiers to support this assertion. Parallel DNA sequencing offers remarkable detection sensitivity, specificity, and throughput capacity that have motivated its use as a broad‐spectrum molecular counter across many fields of science. Although well-known and studied for centuries, sulfur continues to be at the center of an extensive array of scientific research topics. As one of the most abundant elements in the Universe, a major by-product of oil refinery processes, and as a common reaction site within biological systems, research involving sulfur is both broad in scope and incredibly important to our daily lives. Indeed, there has been renewed interest in sulfur-based reactions in just the past ten years. Sulfur research spans the spectrum of topics within the physical sciences including research on improving energy efficiency, environmentally friendly uses for oil refinery waste products, development of polymers with unique optical and mechanical properties, and materials produced for biological applications. This Review focuses on some of the latest exciting ways in which sulfur and sulfur-based reactions are being utilized to produce materials for application in energy, environmental, and other practical areas. Mathematics has had a profound impact on science, providing a means to understand the world around us in unprecedented ways. With the advent of the digital age, the subject of information theory has grown hugely in importance. In particular, over the last two decades significant advances in our understanding of sampling and function reconstruction have culminated in the development of an idea known as compressed sensing. What seems like an abstract idea is now having a profound impact throughout the scientific world-from enabling high-resolution imaging of pediatric patients in clinical medicine through to advancing 3D electron tomography images of nanoparticle catalysts and NMR spectroscopy studies of proteins. In this Minireview, we summarize these applications and provide an outlook on how the principles of compressed sensing are leading to entirely new approaches to measurement throughout the physical and life sciences. Grignard‐type CH nucleophilic addition to aldehydes and nitriles is a severe challenge for inert CH bonds. In their Communication on page 13659 ff., C. Wang et al. meet such a challenge by employing a strategy of dual activation, namely merging CH activation by a manganese catalyst and aldehyde/nitrile activation by zinc bromide.
