7. Circularly Polarized Laser Emission from Homochiral Superstructures based on Achiral Molecules with Conformal Flexibility.

Abstract

Without external chiral intervention, it is a challenge to form homochirality from achiral molecules with conformational flexibility. We here report on a rational strategy that uses multivalent noncovalent interactions to clamp the molecular conformations of achiral D‐A molecules. These interactions overcome the otherwise dominant dipole‐dipole interactions and thus disfavor their symmetric antiparallel stacking. It in turn facilitates parallel packing, leading to spontaneous symmetry breaking during crystallization and thus the formation of homochiral conglomerates. When this emergent homochirality is coupled with optical gain characteristics of the molecules, the homochiral crystals are explored as excellent circularly polarized micro‐lasers with low lasing threshold (16.4 μJ cm−2) and high dissymmetry factor glum (0.9). This study therefore provides a facile design strategy for supramolecular chiral materials and active laser ones without the necessity of intrinsic chiral element. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

An electron donor/acceptor pair comprising perylene (Pe) and 9,10‐dicyanoanthracene (DCA) was specifically designed to construct organic charge‐transfer (CT) alloys via weak CT interaction through a solution co‐assembly route. By adjusting the molar ratio between Pe and DCA, we achieve color‐ and dimension‐tunable CT alloy assemblies involving one‐dimensional (1D) (DCA)1−x(Pe)x (0 ≤ x ≤10 %) microribbons and two‐dimensional (2D) (Pe)1−y(DCA)y (0 ≤ y ≤5 %) nanosheets as a consequence of energy transfer from DCA or α‐Pe to Pe‐DCA CT complex. Importantly, dimension‐related optical waveguiding performances are also revealed: continuously adjustable optical loss in 1D (DCA)1−x(Pe)x microribbons and successive conversion from isotropic waveguide to anisotropic waveguide in 2D (Pe)1−y(DCA)y nanosheets. The present work provides a desired platform for in‐depth investigation of light‐harvesting organic CT alloy assemblies, which show promising applications in miniaturized optoelectronic devices. Abstract

Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) is intrinsically associated with lasing applications. Inefficient photon energy transfer to ASE is a long‐standing issue for organic semiconductors that consist of multiple competing radiative decay pathways, far from being rationally regulated from the perspective of molecular arrangements. Herein, we achieve controllable molecular packing motifs by halogen‐bonded cocrystallization, leading to ten times increased radiative decay rate, four times larger ASE radiative decay selectivity and thus remarkable ASE threshold decrease from 223 to 22 μJ cm−2, albeit with a low photoluminescence quantum yield. We have made an in‐depth investigation on the relationship among molecular arrangements, vibration modes, radiative decay profiles and ASE properties. The results suggest that cocrystallization presents a powerful approach to tailor the radiative decay pathways, which is fundamentally important to the development of organic ASE and lasing materials. Abstract

Abstract: Miniaturized nanowire nanolasers of 3D perovskites feature a high gain coefficient; however, room‐temperature optical gain and nanowire lasers from 2D layered perovskites have not been reported to date. A biomimetic approach is presented to construct an artificial ligh‐harvesting system in mixed multiple quantum wells (QWs) of 2D‐RPPs of (BA)2(FA)n−1PbnBr3n+1, achieving room‐temperature ASE and nanowire (NW) lasing. Owing to the improvement of flexible and deformable characteristics provided by organic BA cation layers, high‐density large‐area NW laser arrays were fabricated with high photostability. Well‐controlled dimensions and uniform geometries enabled 2D‐RPPs NWs functioning as high‐quality Fabry–Perot (FP) lasers with almost identical optical modes, high quality (Q) factor (ca. 1800), and similarly low lasing thresholds.
