The article reports on the use of the confocal nonresonant Raman microspectroscopy to track mitochondrial distribution in cells by Max Diem and colleagues at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. The report noted that mitochondria are typically visualized by electron microscopy or fluorescence-labeling methods, of which both are at least invasive, and researchers wanted to find a method that could track mitochondria yet would minimally disrupt the intracellular environment. The researchers indicated that although their study was carried out on fixed cells, the use of a water-immersion objective would allow the same procedure to be carried out on live, unlabeled cells noninvasively and in their native environment.
