This research paper investigates the electrocatalytic mechanisms and ultra-trace detection abilities of uranyl ions (UO22+) using palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) electrodeposited in deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The unique properties of DESs, such as their adjustable viscosity and ionic conductivity, offer an advantageous and environmentally friendly medium for Pd nanoparticle electrodeposition, resulting in highly active and stable electrocatalysts. Various characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), were used to examine the morphology, size distribution, and crystallographic structure of the Pd nanoparticles. Electrochemical tests revealed that the Pd-modified electrodes show exceptional electrocatalytic activity and current sensitivity towards uranyl ions, with detection limits as low as 3.4 nM. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of the electrocatalytic reduction of UO22+ by the PdNPs, providing a plausible explanation for the high sensitivity of PdNPs in detecting uranyl ions based on the calculated structural parameters and reaction energetics. This study underscores the potential of Pd nanoparticles electrodeposited in DESs as a promising method for sensitive uranyl ion detection, contributing to advancements in environmental monitoring and nuclear safety. Diethyl cyanophosphonate (DCNP), a simulant of Tabun, is a common pollutant in pharmaceutical waste and poses a high risk to living organisms. Herein, we demonstrate a compartmental ligand-derived trinuclear zinc(II) cluster [Zn3(LH)2(CH3COO)2] as a probe for the selective detection and degradation of DCNP. It consists of two pentacoordinated Zn(II) [4.4.3.01,5]tridecane cages bridged through a hexacoordinated Zn(II) acetate unit. The structure of the cluster has been elucidated by spectrometric, spectroscopic, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The cluster shows a two-fold increased emission as compared to the compartmental ligand (at λexc = 370 nm and λem = 463 nm) due to the chelation-enhanced fluorescence effect and acts as a turn-off signal in the presence of DCNP. It can detect DCNP at nano levels up to 186 nM (LOD). The direct bond formation between DCNP and Zn(II) via the –CN group degrades it to inorganic phosphates. The mechanism of the interaction and degradation is supported by spectrofluorimetric experiments, NMR titration (1H and 31P), time of flight mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations. The applicability of the probe has been further tested by the bio-imaging of zebrafish larvae, analysis of high-protein food products (meat and fish) and vapour phase detection by paper strips. L -Glutamic acid (L -Glu) is a basic unit of proteins and also serves as an important neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Its structural properties are critical for biological functions and selective receptor recognition. Although this molecule has been extensively studied, the low frequency vibrational behavior that is closely related to conformational changes and the intermolecular interactions between L -Glu and its receptors are still unclear. In this study, we acquired the fingerprint spectrum of L -Glu by using air plasma terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy in the 0.5–18 THz range. The low frequency vibrational characteristics of L -Glu were investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The THz responses of the ligand binding domain of the NMDAR– L -Glu complex were studied by the ONIOM method, with a focus on discussing the normal modes and interactions of ligand L -Glu and water molecules. The results illustrate that THz spectroscopy exhibits a sensitive response to the influence of L -Glu on the structure of the NMDAR. The water molecules in proteins have various strong vibration modes in the THz band, showing specificity, diversity and complexity of vibrational behavior. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is widely used in daily production and life because of its green and strongly oxidizing properties. Additionally, as a vital reactive oxygen species (ROS), it is an innate immune system weapon and performs a critical function in many pathophysiology processes. In this paper, a novel water-soluble fluorescent probe, BMH, with excellent performance is designed and synthesized by simple condensation of benzocoumarin and 2-mercaptoethanol. BMH has specific selectivity, excellent sensitivity, ultra-fast response (<3 s), and a wide pH detection range. The fluorescence intensity of BMH has an excellent linear correlation with the concentration of HOCl in the scope of 0–10 μM, and the calculated detection limit (DL) is 2.45 nM. The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) sensing mechanism of BL has been verified by fluorescence, UV, and MS studies as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, BMH can be incorporated into a solid-state visual sensor to detect HOCl conveniently. BMH was applied to detect HOCl-spiked actual water samples and achieved satisfying recovery rates. Also, the low-toxicity BMH can be successfully used to track changes in endogenous/exogenous HOCl in living cells. Ag lattice doped In2O3 with a mesoporous structure was synthesized through a combination of hydrothermal and calcination methods. The structural and morphological characteristics were assessed using XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, BET, and XPS analyses. Gas sensing measurements revealed that the 7.0 mol% Ag-doped In2O3 sensor displayed a response of 420 towards 100 ppm ethanol at 140 °C, which was 19 times higher than that of the pure In2O3 gas sensor. Density functional theory calculations indicated that Ag-doped In2O3 exhibited enhanced adsorption performance, higher adsorption energy, and electron transfer, resulting in higher sensitivity to ethanol. These findings were also supported by the electronic band structure, work function, and DOS analyses. After cannabis, the most commonly used illicit substance worldwide is amphetamine and its derivatives, such as methamphetamine, with an ever-increasing number of synthetic modifications. Thus, fast and reliable methods are needed to identify them according to their spectral patterns and structures. Here, we have investigated the use of molecular spectroscopy methods to describe the 3D structures of these substances in a solution that models the physiological environment. The substances were analyzed by Raman and infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy and by chiroptical methods, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and Raman optical activity (ROA). The obtained experimental data were supported by three different computational approaches based on density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD). Successful interpretation relies on good agreement between experimental and predicted spectra. The determination of the conformer populations of the studied molecules was based on maximizing the similarity overlap of weighted conformer spectra by a global minimization algorithm. Very good agreement was obtained between the experimental spectra and optimized-population weighted spectra from MD, providing a detailed insight into the structure of the molecules and their interaction with the solvent. The relative population of three amphetamine and six methamphetamine conformers was determined and is consistent with a previous NMR study. However, this work shows that only a few isolated conformers are not sufficient for the successful interpretation of the spectra, but the entire conformational space needs to be sampled appropriately and explicit interaction with the solvent needs to be included. The leakage of aromatic amines will pose a great threat to human health and the ecological environment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to achieve rapid and high-sensitivity detection of such substances. In this study, a simple surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method based on gold nanostars-modified silver nanorods (AuNSs@AgNRs) was established for the detection of benzidine and 4-aminobiphenyl (4-ABP). The enhancement factors of the substrate towards rhodamine 6G (R6G) and crystal violet (CV) were 4.67 × 108 and 1.11 × 108, respectively. Combined with density functional theory (DFT), the AuNSs@AgNR substrate achieved the rapid detection of benzidine and 4-ABP and obtained low detection limits (LODbenzidine = 7.09 × 10−9 M; LOD4-ABP = 1.20 × 10−9 M). Furthermore, the AuNSs@AgNR substrate can realize the high-sensitivity detection of benzidine and 4-ABP in the spiked river water samples within 3 min, which means that the AuNSs@AgNR-based SERS method can be used as a portable platform to realize the on-site rapid detection of environmental pollutants. Three novel imidazole-based two-photon absorption compounds bearing different organic cations (1PIPy, 2PIQu, and 3PIIm) were facilely synthesized and fully characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR, and HRMS. The linear and nonlinear photophysical properties of the target compounds were systematically investigated in various solvents, supplemented with the density functional theory calculations to shed light on their structure–property relationships. The maximum two-photon action cross-sections (Φ × δmax) were determined to be 22.4–98.2 (CH2Cl2), 9.6–41.3 (DMF), and 3.9–11.8 (H2O) GM. It is found that 3PIIm shows significant viscosity sensitivity with a sharp 27-fold increase in fluorescence intensity. Its fluorescence intensity also exhibits a linear relationship with the viscosity of the media in a logarithmic plot. The Φ × δmax value of 3PIIm in highly viscous glycerol was found to be 107.5 GM. Cytotoxicity tests indicate that these compounds have relatively low cytotoxicity. All the target compounds were successfully characterized by one- and two-photon fluorescence imaging in living cells. The colocalization experiments reveal that 1PIPy and 3PIIm are specially located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) with the Pearson's coefficients above 0.90. 3PIIm can also monitor the fluctuation of ER viscosity during etoposide-induced apoptosis. We demonstrate the rapid and highly sensitive detection of a small molecule, microcystin-LR (MC-LR) toxin using an aptasensor based on a terahertz (THz) emission technique named the terahertz chemical microscope (TCM). The main component of the TCM is the sensing plate, which consists of a thin silicon layer deposited on a sapphire substrate, with a natural SiO2 layer formed on the top of the Si layer. The DNA aptamer is linked to the oxidized top surface of the silicon layer by a one-step reaction (click chemistry) between the DBCO-labeled aptamer and an azido group that binds to the surface. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the number of active sites on the surface has been estimated to be 3.8 × 1013 cm−2. Aptamer immobilization and MC-LR binding have been optimized by adjusting the aptamer concentration and the binding buffer composition. When MC-LR binds with the DNA aptamer, it causes a change in the chemical potential at the surface of the sensing plate, which leads to a change in the amplitude of the THz signal. Compared with other bio-sensing methods such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR), TCM is a rapid assay that can be completed in 15 min (10 min incubation and 5 min data acquisition). Moreover, our results show that the aptamer-based TCM can detect MC-LR with an excellent detection limit of 50 ng L−1, which is 20 times more sensitive compared with SPR measurements of MC-LR. In this study we investigated the synergistic effects of the chirality (molecular structure) and surface morphology (nanostructure) of a newly designed sensing platform for the stereoselective recognition of biomolecules. We synthesized 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene monomers presenting an OH functional group on the side chain (EDOT-OH) with either R or S chirality and then electropolymerized them in a template-free manner to engineer poly(EDOT-OH) nanotubes and smooth films with R or S chirality. We used a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to examine the differential binding of fetal bovine serum, RGD peptide, insulin, and (R)- and (S)-mandelic acid (MA) on these chiral polymeric platforms. All of these biomolecules bound stereoselectively and with greater affinity toward the nanotubes than to the smooth films. The sensitive chiral recognition of (S)- and (R)-MA on the (R)-poly(EDOT-OH) nanotube surface occurred with the highest chiral discrepancy ratio of 1.80. In vitro experiments revealed a greater degree of protein deposition from MCF-7 cells on the chiral nanotube surfaces. Triphenyltin chloride (TPhT) is an organotin compound that causes intensive toxicological risk to the environment and humans. A detection method with high sensitivity and stability is therefore desired to better detect TPhT. In this study, a novel SERS substrate was prepared by sputtering an ultra-thin Au layer on a honeycomb-like silver nanoarray fabricated via the nanosphere lithography method. The ultra-thin Au layer was formed by sputtering the intermittent Au nanoparticles on the silver nanoarray, resulting in bimetallic coupling with dramatically increased hotspots and extremely high SERS enhancement with an analytical enhancement factor (AEF) of 6.08 × 109 using Rhodamine 6G (R6G) as the probe molecule. Based on density functional theory (DFT) simulations, the Raman characteristic peaks of TPhT at 999 cm−1 and 655 cm−1 were selected for TPhT detection. The AEF of the SERS substrate HC5-AgAu was calculated to be 3.38 × 106 with the detection concentration of TPhT down to 10−10 M. The as-prepared honeycomb-like silver–gold bimetallic SERS substrate demonstrated great stability and sensitivity for TPhT detection, which might also be applied in monitoring many other environmental pollutants. In this study, the gas-phase fragmentations of molecular ions of thioanisole derivatives were investigated using electron ionization mass spectrometry (EI-MS). In the EI-MS spectrum, a characteristic fragment ion [M − SH]+ was observed. The same result with the molecular ion of 3-aminothioanisole was enhanced, while the same phenomenon was not obvious in the EI-MS spectra of 2- or 4-aminothioanisole. To explain the fragmentation, we proposed a mechanism that involved the hydrogen transfer-induced S–C rearrangement with 3 pathways. A novel dual-functional probe N′-(2-hydroxy-5-((4,7,7-trimethyl-3-oxobicyclo[2.2.1] heptan-2-ylidene)methyl) benzylidene)picolinohydrazide (PSH) was constructed from natural camphor. This probe showed strong yellow-green fluorescence at 535 nm due to its aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature. Interestingly, the probe PSH displayed a significant turn-on fluorescence response towards Al3+ (green fluorescence at 500 nm) and Zn2+ (orange fluorescence at 555 nm) at two different emissive channels. The detection limits of PSH towards Al3+ and Zn2+ were found to be 12.1 nM and 14.2 nM, respectively. PSH exhibited excellent selectivity and anti-interference performance and could distinguish between Al3+/Zn2+ and identify whether Zn2+ exists in the PSH-Al3+ complex by adding ATP. The binding mechanisms between PSH and Al3+/Zn2+ ions were supported by 1H NMR, HRMS analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on its outstanding sensing properties, the probe PSH was used to establish molecular logic function gates. Moreover, the probe PSH could be applied to detect Al3+ and Zn2+ in real environmental water, and fluorescence detection was well demonstrated by test strips.
