Diethyl cyanophosphonate (DCNP), a simulant of Tabun, is a common pollutant in pharmaceutical waste and poses a high risk to living organisms. Herein, we demonstrate a compartmental ligand-derived trinuclear zinc(II) cluster [Zn3(LH)2(CH3COO)2] as a probe for the selective detection and degradation of DCNP. It consists of two pentacoordinated Zn(II) [4.4.3.01,5]tridecane cages bridged through a hexacoordinated Zn(II) acetate unit. The structure of the cluster has been elucidated by spectrometric, spectroscopic, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The cluster shows a two-fold increased emission as compared to the compartmental ligand (at λexc = 370 nm and λem = 463 nm) due to the chelation-enhanced fluorescence effect and acts as a turn-off signal in the presence of DCNP. It can detect DCNP at nano levels up to 186 nM (LOD). The direct bond formation between DCNP and Zn(II) via the –CN group degrades it to inorganic phosphates. The mechanism of the interaction and degradation is supported by spectrofluorimetric experiments, NMR titration (1H and 31P), time of flight mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations. The applicability of the probe has been further tested by the bio-imaging of zebrafish larvae, analysis of high-protein food products (meat and fish) and vapour phase detection by paper strips. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is widely used in daily production and life because of its green and strongly oxidizing properties. Additionally, as a vital reactive oxygen species (ROS), it is an innate immune system weapon and performs a critical function in many pathophysiology processes. In this paper, a novel water-soluble fluorescent probe, BMH, with excellent performance is designed and synthesized by simple condensation of benzocoumarin and 2-mercaptoethanol. BMH has specific selectivity, excellent sensitivity, ultra-fast response (<3 s), and a wide pH detection range. The fluorescence intensity of BMH has an excellent linear correlation with the concentration of HOCl in the scope of 0–10 μM, and the calculated detection limit (DL) is 2.45 nM. The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) sensing mechanism of BL has been verified by fluorescence, UV, and MS studies as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, BMH can be incorporated into a solid-state visual sensor to detect HOCl conveniently. BMH was applied to detect HOCl-spiked actual water samples and achieved satisfying recovery rates. Also, the low-toxicity BMH can be successfully used to track changes in endogenous/exogenous HOCl in living cells. The trace-level detection of harmful NO2 gas at room-temperature is very important for environmental protection and public health. This paper reports the resonant-gravimetric detection of ppb-level NO2 at room-temperature using two-dimensional porous TiO2 nanosheets (PTNSs) as highly active sensing materials. They are synthesized by a facile high-temperature calcination approach based on a graphene oxide self-sacrificial template. The PTNS sample prepared at 500 °C (TiO2-500 °C) show an anatase structure, while the sample prepared at 800 °C (TiO2-800 °C) contains an impurity rutile phase. By loading pure anatase PTNSs onto resonant microcantilevers, the sensors exhibit high sensitivity to NO2 gas with a limit of detection as low as 15 ppb. Compared with the TiO2-800 °C sample, the much higher sensitivity of the TiO2-500 °C sample can be attributed to the bigger adsorption enthalpy (–ΔH°) of pure anatase TiO2 to NO2 gas molecules (21.7 and 57.8 kJ mol−1, respectively). Density functional theory calculations further demonstrate that the existence of the rutile impurity phase in the TiO2-800 °C sample results in its significantly decreased adsorption activity to NO2. Herein, a colorimetric sensor (L) based on a naphthyl derivative bearing hydrazone receptors was synthesized via a one-step reaction process, and its recognition properties towards biologically important anions in an acetonitrile–water mixture were investigated by naked-eye observation and UV-Vis and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The molar addition of anions, such as TBAF−, TBAOH−, TBACN− and TBAAcO−, induced a significant red shift in the charge transfer band (Δλ = 73 nm, from 337 nm to 410 nm), in agreement with visible "naked eye" detectable colorimetric activities; in addition, soaked-in-L paper strips were prepared, which could significantly discriminate cyanide (KCN) and hydroxide (NaOH) ions dissolved in tap water via the litmus test method. Compared to the nitrogen-reaction based pH optical responsive compounds, oxygen-reaction related pH sensors have attracted less attention. In this paper, hemicyanine based pH probes are designed by establishing the equilibrium between phenolate and phenol, and their reversible absorption and emission responses towards pH are evaluated. The indolium–phenol based tetramethylene hemicyanine (1a) has colorimetric responses at 455 and 578 nm due to the protonating and deprotonating processes; its emission spectra shows ratiometric changes at 594 and 654 nm with large Stokes shifts under acidic (139 nm) and basic conditions (76 nm). The bromide substituent of the hemicyanine (1b) has a lower pKa value compared with unsubstituted hemicyanine (1a), which suggests that adjustable pKa can be achieved by the modification of electron withdrawing groups. The theoretical calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) were also used to explain the optical properties. Moreover, the in cellulo fluorescence imaging shows that the hemicyanine (1a) can be used for the detection of intracellular pH levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
