Background. Shift work negatively influences biological aspects in human organisms. Shift work done by medical staff may lead to burnout syndrome. Material and methods. The main aim of this study was investigate if working shifts influences the development of burnout syndrome in medical staff of Emergency Department of John Paul II Upper Silesian Child Health Centre (JPIIUSChC) using Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Results. No statistically significant difference was found between working shifts and development of burnout syndrome dimensions in medical staff of JPIIUSChC regardless of the sort of work; although a tendency towards higher expression in dimension of emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment was observed in medical staff of emergency unit compared to neurological rehabilitation unit. Conclusion. It is worth considering implementation of countermeasures against development of abovementioned dimensions of burnout syndrome in selected groups of medical staff of JPIIUSChC.
