Is there a role for cough suppression techniques in the COVID-19 era? The recent article by Brown et al. [1] has lent some credence to what we and many of our colleagues have long suspected; that tracheal intubation is not in fact a significant generator of aerosols, particularly when performed correctly. A study comparing 160 mg laryngotracheal lidocaine (4 ml of 4% solution) showed a reduction in the incidence of coughing before (66% to 26%) and after extubation (30% vs. 4%) in procedures lasting less than 2 h [5].
