Seed dispersal by ants (myrmecochory) is widespread, and seed adaptations to myrmecochory are common, especially in the form of fatty appendices (elaiosomes). In a recent study, slugs were identified as seed dispersers of myrmecochores in a central European beech forest. Here we used 105 beech forest sites to test whether myrmecochore presence and abundance is related to ant or gastropod abundance and whether experimentally exposed seeds are removed by gastropods. Myrmecochorous plant cover was positively related to gastropod abundance but was negatively related to ant abundance. Gastropods were responsible for most seed removal and elaiosome damage, whereas insects (and rodents) played minor roles. These gastropod effects on seeds were independent of region or forest management. We suggest that terrestrial gastropods can generally act as seed dispersers of myrmecochorous plants and even substitute myrmecochory, especially where ants are absent or uncommon. It is widely accepted that organisms adjust their dispersal propensity to local population density, but there has been no analysis of how they should react to changes in environmental conditions that reduce local density. We take the case of delayed predator-induced dispersal (PID) in aphids to explore in which way current environmental conditions may be utilized as an appropriate signal for dispersal decisions. In aphids, the presence of predators triggers the production of winged offspring that may later leave the plant and shift their center of activity permanently. Using individual-based simulations as well as analytical approximations, we explore under which conditions PID is likely to evolve. We demonstrate that this requires substantial temporal correlation in predation risk and weak competition among prey; these conditions may be fulfilled in the aphid system. We discuss the analogy between the specific case of PID and the evolution of conditional emigration in the face of spatiotemporally correlated deterioration in reproduction or survival. We modeled hierarchical multiscale colonization-extinction dynamics of two aphid species living in a shared host plant. We parameterized the model with data collected at the level of individual ramets of the host plant, with the plants being organized as groups within islands. As expected, the extinction rates and per capita colonization rates decreased with increasing spatial scale. The per capita colonization rates were greater for winged than for unwinged individuals, but as the unwinged individuals were much more abundant, they actually performed most of the colonizations. Colonizations and extinctions were negatively correlated, so that when the colonization rate in a given island was high, the extinction rate in the same island was low. There was a clear indication of interspecific interaction, with the presence of one species increasing the extinction rate and decreasing the colonization rate of the other species. Further simulation results based on the parameterized model show a contrasting pattern between the two species, with Metopeurum fuscoviride (with relatively stable dynamics) being favored by a highly aggregated distribution of the ramets, whereas for Macrosiphoniella tanacetaria (with a high turnover rate), an equally high persistence time follows if the plants are distributed in a segregated manner over several islands.
