Albite patches in coarsely mesoperthitic alkali feldspars from the Klokken syenite have oscillatory zoning seen at blue wavelengths using cathodoluminescence. Using a five-spectrometer, high-resolution elemental mapping technique in an electron probe, we show a close correspondence between CL emission intensity and Ti, present at levels up to ~200 ppm. Albite patches were analyzed for major and 16 trace elements by laser-ablation inductively coupled-plasma mass spectrometry. SEM elemental maps acquired simultaneously with the CL showed that a similar zoning pattern is exhibited by Ca, but there is no correlation between CL intensity and Ca concentration. None of the trace elements analyzed correlate with Ti. We conclude that tetrahedral [Ti.sup.4+] is the most likely activator of blue luminescence in these albitic alkali feldspars possibly because of a defect associated with Al-O-Ti bridges. Using a focused ion beam (FIB) instrument, electron-transparent samples (termed foils) have been cut from the naturally weathered surfaces of perthitic alkali feldspars recovered from soils overlying the Shap granite, northwest England. Characterization of these foils by transmission electron microscopy (TEN[) has enabled determination of the crystallinity and chemical composition of near-surface regions of the feldspar and an assessment of the influence of intragranular microtextures on the microtopography of grain surfaces and development of etch pits. Damage accompanying implantation of the 30 kV [Ga.sup.+] ions used for imaging and deposition of protective platinum prior to ion milling creates amorphous layers beneath outer grain surfaces, but can be overcome by coating grains with >85 nm of gold before FIB work. The sidewalls of the foil and feldspar surrounding original voids are also partially amorphized during later stages of ion milling. No evidence was found for the presence of amorphous or crystalline weathering products of amorphous 'leached layers' immediately beneath outer grain surfaces. The absence of a leached layer indicates that chemical weathering of feldspar in the Shap soils is stoichiometric, or if non-stoichiometric, either the layer is too thin to resolve by the TEM techniques used (i.e., [less than or equal to]~2.5 nm) of an insufficient proportion of ions have been leached from near-surface regions so that feldspar crystallinity is maintained. No evidence was found for any difference in the mechanisms of weathering where a microbial filament rests on the feldspar surface. Sub-micrometer-sized steps on the grain surface have formed where subgrains and exsolution lamellae have influenced the propagation of fractures during physical weathering, whereas finer scale corrugations form due to compositional or strain-related differences in dissolution rates of albite platelets and enclosing tweed orthoclase. With progressive weathering, etch pits that initiated at the grain surface extend into grain interiors as etch tubes by exploiting preexisting networks of nanopores that formed during the igneous history of the grain. The combination of FIB and TEM techniques is an especially powerful way of exploring mechanisms of weathering within the 'internal zone' beneath outer grain surfaces, but results must be interpreted with caution owing to the ease with which artifacts can be created by the high-energy ion and electron beams used in the preparation and characterization of the foils. Cryptoperthitic alkali feldspars within the Proterozoic Klokken syenite have been pervasively altered deuterically to patch perthites whose constituent subgrains display very fine-scale zoning in optical cathodoluminescence (CL). Electron-probe analyses and hyperspectral maps were acquired from several areas of patch perthite to potentially identify the centers responsible for CL emission and to access information that the subgrains might provide about the late-stage geological evolution of the pluton. Each hyperspectral map is composed of tens of thousands of CL spectra covering a wavelength range of 350-850 nm, and images can be formed from any desired wavelength band. The patch perthite subgrains have two emission bands: one in the blue (~460 nm) and the other at red to infrared wavelengths (~690-725 nm). Cathodoluminescence images formed using both bands show that the optically visible zoning is developed only at blue wavelengths. Comparisons of emission intensities with electron-probe analyses show that the blue band is activated by [Ti.sup.3+] and less than ~25 ppm of the trace element is required for optically detectable luminescence. Adjacent Ab- and Or-rich subgrains can have identical patterns of zoning at blue wavelengths, indicating that they crystallized from the deuteric fluid simultaneously, but in most cases, differences in zoning within any one area of patch perthite indicate that subgrains grew at different times and slowly relative to the frequent changes in concentrations of Ti within the deuteric fluid. The red to infrared CL emission band is inferred to be activated by [Fe.sup.3+]. Ab-rich feldspar with the greatest intensities of long-wavelength emission and FeO concentrations crystallized from a late-stage and relatively low-T fluid that obtained a proportion of its Fe from mafic grains. The generally poor correlation between variations in intensities of the two emission bands within any one subgrain indicates that concentrations of Ti and Fe in the deuteric fluid varied independently of each other, and one trace element has no sensitizing or quenching effect on emission from the other center. The maximum length of zones within individual subgrains (~0.5 mm) and maximum separation of subgrains with similar zoning patterns (~1 mm) helps to constrain the length and interconnectivity of the thin films of deuteric fluid that mediated alteration. The usefulness of cathodoluminescence (CL) in mineralogy and petrology is largely due to its high sensitivity to variations in the chemical compositions of minerals. Difficulty in interpretation of CL images, however, often limits their use beyond the identification of growth zones, which are then analyzed using other, more readily quantifiable, techniques. The use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) CL in hyperspectral imaging mode, combined with simultaneously acquired X-ray composition mapping, extends the technique by allowing the separation of spectral features and their correlation with elemental composition. In this paper, we describe the use of such measurements in conjunction with multivariate statistical analysis to automatically identify and characterize zones in calcite and zircon. We demonstrate that this novel combination of techniques significantly increases the effectiveness of CL as a diagnostic tool for Earth science applications. Orthoclase-rich alkali feldspars in the Lower Devonian Shap granite, northwest England, contain two generations of albite-rich feldspar. These have partially replaced earlier exsolution microtextures consisting of albite lamellae (coarse semicoherent albite films and fine coherent albite platelets) in tweed orthoclase. The earlier generation of replacive albite-rich feldspar ([similar to][Ab.sub.90][An.sub.9][Or.sub.1]) occurs together with orthoclase-rich feldspar ([similar to][Ab.sub.10][Or.sub.90]) in veins that crosscut exsolution microtextures throughout grain interiors. This episode of recrystallization was mediated by magmatic fluids at [approximately] 410 [degrees] C (estimated from two-feldspar geothermometry) and was driven by stored elastic strain energy, which was relatively homogeneously distributed throughout the microtextures. The later generation of replacive albite-rich feldspar, which is restricted to grain margins and is compositionally pure ([Ab.sub.>99]), was produced by magmatic-hydrothermal fluids at [approximately] 370 [degrees] C. This generation of albite-rich feldspar does not crosscut exsolution microtextures and has selectively replaced volumes of highly elastically strained feldspar surrounding edge dislocations along semi-coherent albite films. Marked differences in controls of the localization of the two generations of replacive albite-rich feldspar by pre-existing exsolution microtextures indicate that significant numbers of edge dislocations developed along albite films after the first phase of fluid-feldspar interaction and associated albitization but before the second phase. This relation indicates that edge dislocations formed between 410 and 370 [degrees] C. These observations have important implications for understanding the factors that control the interaction of alkali feldspars with fluids both in cooling igneous rocks and in clastic sedimentary rocks during diagenesis.

Almost all alkali feldspar crystals contain a rich inventory of exsolution, twin, and domain microtextures that form subsequent to crystal growth and provide a record of the thermal history of the crystal and often of its involvement in replacement reactions, sometimes multiple. Microtextures strongly influence the subsequent behavior of feldspars at low temperatures during diagenesis and weathering. They are central to the retention or exchange of trace elements and of radiogenic and stable isotopes. This review is aimed at petrologists and geochemists who wish to use alkali feldspar microtextures to solve geological problems or who need to understand how microtextures influence a particular process. We suggest a systematic approach that employs methods available in most well founded laboratories. The crystallographic relationships of complex feldspar intergrowths were established by the 1970s, mainly using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, but such methods give limited information on the spatial relationships of the different elements of the microtexture, or of the mode and chronology of their formation, which require the use of microscopy. We suggest a combination of techniques with a range of spatial resolution and strongly recommend the use of orientated sections. Sections cut parallel to the perfect (001) and (010) cleavages are the easiest to locate and most informative. Techniques described are light microscopy; scanning electron microscopy using both backscattered and secondary electrons, including the use of surfaces etched in the laboratory; electron-probe microanalysis and analysis by energy-dispersive spectrometry in a scanning electron microscope; transmission electron microscopy. We discuss the use of cathodoluminescence as an auxiliary technique, but do not recommend electron-backscattered diffraction for feldspar work. We review recent publications that provide examples of the need for great care and attention to pre-existing work in microtextural studies, and suggest several topics for future work. Cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy provides useful information about the existence of radiation-induced defect centers with a few micrometer resolutions and therefore has great potential to estimate the accumulated dose of natural radiation in micrometer-ordered mineral grains from radioactive decay. Although great scientific interest exists concerning the CL of various types of minerals, very few investigation have been conducted on the luminescence properties of radiation-induced alkali feldspars. This study, therefore, has sought a clarification of radiation effects on emission centers detected by CL analysis of alkali feldspar implanted with He+ ions at 4.0 MeV, which corresponds to the energy of an α particle derived from radioactive decay of 238U and 232Th. Panchromatic CL images of cross sections of sanidine, orthoclase, and microcline show a dark line with ~1 μm width on the bright luminescent background at 12-15 μm beneath the implanted surface, of which behavior may be corresponding to the electronic energy loss process of 4.0 MeV He+ ion. CL and Raman spectroscopy revealed that He+ ion implantation may leads to a partial destruction of the feldspar framework and Na+ migration, resulting in a quenching of CL emission from alkali feldspar, proportional to the radiation dose. CL spectra of unimplanted and He+-ion-implanted sanidine, orthoclase and microcline have emission bands at ~400-410 nm and at ~730 nm. Deconvolution of the CL spectra can successfully separate these emission bands into emission components at 3.05, 2.81, 2.09, 1.73, and 1.68 eV. These components are assigned to the Ti4+ impurity, Al-O--Al/Ti defect, a radiation-induced defect center, and Fe3+ impurities on the T1 and T2 sites, respectively. The intensity at 3.05 eV negatively correlates with radiation dose owing to decreases in the luminescence efficiency. A slight Na+ diffusion and breaking of the linkage between Ti4+ and oxygen as a ligand might reduce the activation energy, which decreases the availability of radiative energy in the luminescence process of Ti4+ impurity centers. Furthermore, He+ ion implantation causes electron holes to be trapped at and released from Löwenstein bridges as a consequence of Na+ migration and leads to a partial destruction of Al-O bonds, which might be responsible for an increase and decrease in the intensity of emission component at 2.81 eV. With an enhanced radiation dose, there is a decrease in intensity at 1.73 eV and an increase in intensity at 1.68 eV. Deconvoluted CL spectra of the alkali feldspars reveal a positive correlation between intensity at 2.09 eV and the radiation dose, which may be due to the formation of a radiation-induced defect center. These correlations can be fitted by an exponential curve, where the gradients differ between the alkali feldspars studied, and are largest for the microcline, followed by the orthoclase and then the sanidine. The intensity at 2.09 eV has the potential to be used in geodosimetry and geochronometry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
