When Baddeley and Hitch (1974) published their seminal paper on working memory in the mid-1970s, the construct of working memory was not widely acknowledged or used by researchers who were [...], The authors discuss the continued viability of the working memory construct by examining its origin and historical development in the field of psychology and critiquing it on theoretical, philosophical, and methodological grounds. They do so by asking and answering the following questions: (a) When and why did the construct first emerge in psychological theorizing?, (b) What are the historical trends in how has it been defined operationally?, (c) How have researchers related it to the construct of intelligence at different points in time?, (d) Is it a natural kind or a cultural invention?, (e) Is progress being made in understanding the construct?, and (f) Where do we go from here? They conclude that there are sufficient reasons for continuing to examine the construct given its considerable predictive value and suggest that the most promising approach would be to delve further into its association with fluid intelligence by using several kinds of methods.

There is a rich tradition of writings about the foundation of psychology laboratories, particularly in the United States and in France. Like their German counterparts, American laboratories of psychology were described by several scholars in French journals. These descriptions stimulated the establishment of laboratories in France and provided templates for laboratory designs. We introduce here an article written by Marcel Baudouin (1860-1941), who visited and subsequently described the psychology laboratory of Granville Stanley Hall (1844-1924) at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. The English translation of Baudouin's paper, provided here, constitutes an interesting new document on Hall's laboratory at Clark University as it stood in 1893. From the French perspective, the Clark laboratory provided an ideal model for the experimental psychology laboratory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In synesthesia, stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to additional, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. We here review previous surveys on this neurologically based phenomenon and report the results of 63 synesthetes who completed our Internet and paper questionnaire on synesthesia. In addition to asking for personal data and information on the participant's synesthesia, the questionnaire focused on the components of the inducer that elicit or modulate synesthesia. Synesthesia was most often developmental (92%) and of the grapheme-color type (86%). Sixty-two percent of the participants perceived time-related words in a spatial configuration. Music-color synesthesia was common (41%), and synesthesia for natural and artificial sounds (33%) was higher than in previous estimates. Eighty-one percent of participants experienced more than one form of synesthesia. Multimodal synesthesia, in which inducer and concurrent belong to 2 different sensory modalities, occurred in 92% of the participants. Overall, auditory stimuli were most often reported as inducers, and visual concurrents were most common. Modulations of the synesthetic experiences such as changes of the concurrent color, expansion within the same or to a different sensory modality, or reduction of the number of inducers over time were reported by 17% of participants. This challenges the presumed consistency of synesthesia and the adequacy of the test-retest consistency score still most commonly used to assess the veracity of reported synesthesia. Implications of the high prevalence of cross-modal synesthesia and the variability of synesthesia are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a comparison of memory and inner language between mental calculators Périclès Diamandi and Jacques Inaudi in 1893. It is stated that Mr. Diamandi remembers numbers in their visual form and that after multiple glances of digits written on paper, he expends effort to vividly render the visual image of these digits, but the time he takes to remember them varies greatly. Most research conducted on memory for crime has examined the memories of eyewitnesses, an emphasis clearly reflected in the approximately 2,000 research papers reviewed in the recent two-volume Handbook of [...], Few researchers have investigated the memories of active participants in an emotionally arousing crime. The present study used a mock crime paradigm to explore participant memories for a low, moderate, or highly arousing event. Forty-seven undergraduate participants committed a 'theft' of an exam from a professor's office. Two weeks after the theft, participants completed a cognitive interview, recalled objects from the professor's office, and constructed a map of the route to and from the crime room. Arousal improved reports on a map recall task but no other recall indices. Although there was a general superiority of recall of proximal over distal details, arousal only infrequently interacted with proximity. Some support was found for proximity (spatial-temporal distinction) as a useful proxy for centrality. Future work will benefit from an examination of the overlap between definitions of centrality and proximity with more traditional stimuli.
