The American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative & Comparative Physiology has issued a call for papers on the topic of cardiovascular regulation during exercise, specifically focusing on the role of biological sex and the consequences of aging. The editors are seeking original research, short reports, and reviews that explore areas such as autonomic control of circulation, skeletal muscle, cerebral and cardiac blood flow, cardiac regulation, hemodynamic regulation, and thermal challenges. Rhythmic feeding behavior is critical for regulating phase and amplitude in the ≈24-h variation of heart rate (RR intervals), ventricular repolarization (QT intervals), and core body temperature in mice. We hypothesized changes in cardiac electrophysiology associated with feeding behavior were secondary to changes in core body temperature. Telemetry was used to record electrocardiograms and core body temperature in mice during ad libitum-fed conditions and after inverting normal feeding behavior by restricting food access to the light cycle. Light cycle-restricted feeding modified the phase and amplitude of 24-h rhythms in RR and QT intervals, and core body temperature to realign with the new feeding time. Changes in core body temperature alone could not account for changes in phase and amplitude in the ≈24-h variation of the RR intervals. Heart rate variability analysis and inhibiting β-adrenergic and muscarinic receptors suggested that changes in the phase and amplitude of 24-h rhythms in RR intervals were secondary to changes in autonomic signaling. In contrast, changes in QT intervals closely mirrored changes in core body temperature. Studies at thermoneutrality confirmed that the daily variation in QT interval, but not RR interval, primarily reflected daily changes in core body temperature (even in ad libitum-fed conditions). Correcting the QT interval for differences in core body temperature helped unmask QT interval prolongation after starting light cycle-restricted feeding and in a mouse model of long QT syndrome. We conclude feeding behavior alters autonomic signaling and core body temperature to regulate phase and amplitude in RR and QT intervals, respectively. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: We used time-restricted feeding and thermoneutrality to demonstrate that different mechanisms regulate the 24-h rhythms in heart rate and ventricular repolarization. The daily rhythm in heart rate reflects changes in autonomic input, whereas daily rhythms in ventricular repolarization reflect changes in core body temperature. This novel finding has major implications for understanding 24-h rhythms in mouse cardiac electrophysiology, arrhythmia susceptibility in transgenic mouse models, and interpretability of cardiac electrophysiological data acquired in thermoneutrality. We introduce the concept of cardiac neuroautonomic renewability and a method for its quantification. This concept refers to the involuntary nervous system's capacity to improve cardiac control in response to restorative interventions, such as sleep. We used the change in heart rate fragmentation (DHRF), before sleep onset compared with after sleep termination, to quantify the restorative effects of sleep. We hypothesized that the ability to improve cardiac neuroautonomic functionality would diminish with age and be associated with lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). We analyzed the ECG channel of polysomnographic recordings from an ancillary investigation of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). In a cohort of 659 participants (mean ± SD age, 69.7 ± 8.8; 42% male), HRF was significantly (P < 0.001) lower after sleep (before: 74 ± 12%, after: 67 ± 13%). Furthermore, the magnitude of the decrease significantly (P < 0.001) diminished with cross-sectional age. In addition, a larger reduction in HRF following sleep (i.e., higher DHRF) was associated with lower risk of MACE, independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors and current measures of sleep quality. Specifically, over a mean follow-up period of 6.4 ± 1.6 yr, in which 60 participants had their first MACE, a one-SD (12%) increase in DHRF was associated with a 36% (95% CI: 12%--53%) decrease in the risk of MACE. The results demonstrate the restorative impact of sleep on heart rate control. As such they support the concept of cardiac neuroautonomic renewability and the utility of DHRF for its quantification. The role of cholinergic and β-adrenergic activity in mediating fetal cardiovascular recovery from brief repeated episodes of asphyxia, consistent with established labor, remains unclear. In this study, we tested the effect of cholinergic and β-adrenergic blockade on the fetal chemoreflex and fetal heart rate (FHR) overshoot responses during brief repeated asphyxia at rates consistent with early or active labor. Chronically instrumented fetal sheep at 0.85 of gestation received either intravenous atropine sulfate (cholinergic blockade; n = 7) or vehicle (n = 8) followed by 3 × 1-min umbilical cord occlusions repeated every 5 min (1:5; consistent with early labor), or intravenous propranolol hydrochloride (β-adrenergic blockade; n = 8) or vehicle (n = 6) followed by 3 × 2-min occlusions repeated every 5 min (2:5; consistent with active labor). In vehicle controls, 1:5 occlusions were associated with rapid and sustained FHR decelerations followed by rapid return of FHR to baseline values after release of the occlusion. Cholinergic blockade abolished FHR decelerations during occlusions and caused FHR overshoot after release of the occlusion (P < 0.05 vs. control 1:5). In vehicle controls, 2:5 occlusions caused rapid and sustained FHR decelerations followed by FHR overshoot after release of the occlusion. β-adrenergic blockade was associated with greater reduction in FHR during occlusions and attenuated FHR overshoot (P < 0.05 vs. control 2:5). These data demonstrate that the FHR overshoot pattern after asphyxia is mediated by a combination of attenuated parasympathetic activity and increased β-adrenergic stimulation of the fetal heart. The analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) by nonlinear methods has been gaining increasing interest due to their ability to quantify the complexity of cardiovascular regulation. In this study, multiscale entropy (MSE) and refined MSE (RMSE) were applied to track the complexity of HRV as a function of time scale in three pathological conscious animal models: rats with heart failure (HF), spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), and rats with sinoaortic denervation (SAD). Results showed that HF did not change HRV complexity, although there was a tendency to decrease the entropy in HF animals. On the other hand, SHR group was characterized by reduced complexity at long time scales, whereas SAD animals exhibited a smaller short- and long-term irregularity. We propose that short time scales (1 to 4), accounting for fast oscillations, are more related to vagal and respiratory control, whereas long time scales (5 to 20), accounting for slow oscillations, are more related to sympathetic control. The increased sympathetic modulation is probably the main reason for the lower entropy observed at high scales for both SHR and SAD groups, acting as a negative factor for the cardiovascular complexity. The aim of the study was to identify the contribution of myelinated (A-fiber) and unmyelinated (Cfiber) baroreceptor central pathways to the baroreflex control of sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) and arterial pressure (AP) in anesthetized Wistar-Kyoto (WKY; n 8) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR; n 8). The left aortic depressor nerve (ADN) was electrically stimulated with two types of binary white noise signals designed to preferentially activate A-fibers (A-BRx protocol) or C-fibers (C-BRx protocol). In WKY, the central arc transfer function from ADN stimulation to SNA estimated by A-BRx showed strong derivative characteristics with the slope of dynamic gain between 0.1 and 1 Hz (Gslope) of 14.63 ± 0.89 dB/decade. In contrast, the central arc transfer function estimated by C-BRx exhibited nonderivative characteristics with Gslope of 0.64 ± 1.13 dB/decade. This indicates that A-fibers are important for rapid baroreflex regulation, whereas C-fibers are likely important for more sustained regulation of SNA and AP. In SHR, the central arc transfer function estimated by A-BRx showed higher Gslope (18.46 ± 0.75 dB/decade, P < 0.01) and that estimated by C-BRx showed higher Gslope (8.62 ± 0.64 dB/decade, P < 0.001) with significantly lower dynamic gain at 0.01 Hz (6.29 ± 0.48 vs. 2.80 ± 0.36%/Hz, P < 0.001) compared with WKY. In conclusion, the dynamic characteristics of the A-fiber central pathway are enhanced in the high-modulation frequency range (0.1-1 Hz) and those of the C-fiber central pathway are attenuated in the lowmodulation frequency range (0.01- 0.1 Hz) in SHR.
