10. Written Testing of Students in the Experiential Setting.

Abstract

Reports on data from pharmaceutical students' experiential training based on paired baseline and end-of-rotation short-answer tests of 86 students over a 10-year period. Significant improvements from baseline to end-of-rotation were found. Results suggest the value of the written examination as an interactive assessment instrument, but not as a replacement for more subjective evaluations. (DB)

11. Evaluation of Practice Site Learning Experience for Entry-Level Doctor of Pharmacy Students.

Abstract

Evaluated a practice-site learning experience for 55 doctoral pharmacy students, using student logs and written summaries and pre- and post-experience surveys concerning student awareness, understanding, and mastery of desired outcomes. Students indicated increased awareness and understanding of desired outcomes, and found patient interaction especially useful. Results suggest early disclosure of outcome objectives to students is important to learning. (Author/MSE)

Abstract

There are unique challenges associated with the evaluation of faculty in pharmacy departments or divisions that have a mix of non-tenure-track and tenure-track faculty members. Such evaluations are intended to provide feedback on performance and personal growth but have the potential to demotivate faculty and add to existing stress if improperly performed. The purpose of this commentary is to suggest best practices for department chairs involved in performing evaluations of faculty in pharmacy departments or divisions that have a mix of non-tenure-track and tenure-track faculty members. The paper is intended to help ensure these evaluations not only capture the quality and quantity of each faculty member’s full range of activities and responsibilities but also are conducted in a supportive and constructive fashion. This commentary is targeted for new department chairs, new faculty members unfamiliar with academic evaluation processes, and departments contemplating changes in their existing evaluation procedures.
