Purpose To develop a novel deep-learning approach that can describe the structural phenotype of the glaucomatous ONH and can be used as a robust glaucoma diagnosis tool. Design Retrospective, deep-learning approach diagnosis study. Method We trained a deep learning network to segment three neural-tissue and four connective-tissue layers of the ONH. The segmented OCT images were then processed by a customized autoencoder network with an additional parallel branch for binary classification. The encoder part of the autoencoder reduced the segmented OCT images into a low-dimensional latent space (LS); whereas the decoder and the classification branches reconstructed the images and classified them as glaucoma or non-glaucoma, respectively. We performed principal component analysis on the latent parameters and identified the principal components (PCs). Subsequently, the magnitude of each PC was altered in steps and reported how it impacted the morphology of the ONH. Results The image reconstruction quality and diagnostic accuracy increased with the size of the LS. With 54 parameters in the LS, the diagnostic accuracy was 92.0±2.3% with a sensitivity of 90.0±2.4% (at 95% specificity), and the corresponding Dice coefficient for the reconstructed images was 0.86±0.04. By changing the magnitudes of PC in steps, we were able to reveal how the morphology of the ONH changes as one transitions from a ‘non-glaucoma’ to a ‘glaucoma’ condition. Conclusions Our network was able to identify novel biomarkers of the ONH for glaucoma diagnosis. Specifically, the structural features identified by our algorithm were found to be related to clinical observations of glaucoma.

Vision impairment (VI) is associated with poor quality of life and increased risk of falls. Few prospective data are available on Asians. This study investigates the longitudinal impact of VI and the major eye diseases on mortality risk in Asians.Prospective cohort study with meta-analysis.We conducted a multi-ethnic prospective study of adults (40-80 years old) in the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases Study (baseline: 2004-2011). All-cause mortality was obtained from the National Death Registry until May 2017. VI was defined by best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA)20/40 in the better eye. Major eye diseases were assessed using standard protocols. We examined associations using multivariate-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models. Finally, we conducted a meta-analysis of the associations between VI and mortality.Of 9,986 participants, 1,210 deaths occurred (12.1%) over a median follow-up of 8.8 years. Compared to participants with normal vision, persons with VI had increased risk of mortality (hazards ratio [HR]: 1.53; 95% confidence interval [CI:] 1.30-1.81) in multivariate models. In ethnicity-specific analyses, this association was significant across Chinese (HR: 1.63; 95% CI: 1.08-2.48); Malays (HR: 1.31; 95% CI: 1.06-1.62); and Indians (HR: 2.25; 95% CI: 1.61-3.15). Cataract, under-corrected refractive errors (URE), and diabetic retinopathy (DR) were significantly associated with mortality (HRs: 1.30, 1.22, and 1.54, respectively). In a meta-analysis of 12 studies including 58,034 persons, VI was associated with 30% increased risk of mortality (HR: 1.3; 95% CI: 1.2-1.5).In this multi-ethnic Asian population, VI and preventable eye conditions (cataract, URE, and DR) were associated with mortality, emphasizing the need for early detection and intervention to prevent and treat VI and major eye diseases.

To assess whether the 3-dimensional (3D) structural configuration of the central retinal vessel trunk and its branches (CRVTB) could be used as a diagnostic marker for glaucoma.Retrospective, deep-learning approach diagnosis study.We trained a deep learning network to automatically segment the CRVTB from the B-scans of the optical coherence tomography (OCT) volume of the optic nerve head. Subsequently, 2 different approaches were used for glaucoma diagnosis using the structural configuration of the CRVTB as extracted from the OCT volumes. In the first approach, we aimed to provide a diagnosis using only 3D convolutional neural networks and the 3D structure of the CRVTB. For the second approach, we projected the 3D structure of the CRVTB orthographically onto sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes to obtain 3 two-dimensional (2D) images, and then a 2D convolutional neural network was used for diagnosis. The segmentation accuracy was evaluated using the Dice coefficient, whereas the diagnostic accuracy was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs). The diagnostic performance of the CRVTB was also compared with that of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness (calculated in the same cohorts).Our segmentation network was able to efficiently segment retinal blood vessels from OCT scans. On a test set, we achieved a Dice coefficient of 0.81 ± 0.07. The 3D and 2D diagnostic networks were able to differentiate glaucoma from nonglaucoma subjects with accuracies of 82.7% and 83.3%, respectively. The corresponding AUCs for the CRVTB were 0.89 and 0.90, higher than those obtained with RNFL thickness alone (AUCs ranging from 0.74 to 0.80).Our work demonstrated that the diagnostic power of the CRVTB is superior to that of a gold-standard glaucoma parameter, that is, RNFL thickness. Our work also suggested that the major retinal blood vessels form a "skeleton"-the configuration of which may be representative of major optic nerve head structural changes as typically observed with the development and progression of glaucoma.

Purpose We sought to determine the association of refractive error and its associated determinants (axial length [AL], anterior chamber depth, and corneal curvature) with the incidence and progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Design Population-based cohort study. Methods A total of 1562 eyes of 840 individuals with diabetes and gradable retinal photographs (mean age [SD], 57.0 [8.3] years, 48.2% female) from the Singapore Malay and Indian Eye Studies at baseline (2004–2009) and follow-up (2011–2015) examinations were included in the analyses. Refractive error was calculated as sphere plus half negative cylinder, while AL, anterior chamber depth, and corneal curvature were assessed using optical biometry. Incident DR was defined as having no baseline DR and any DR at follow-up; incident vision-threatening DR as no baseline vision-threatening DR but present at follow-up; and DR progression as an increase in severity at follow-up from at least minimal baseline DR. Eye-specific data and generalized estimating equation models were used to account for between-eye correlation to determine the relationships between the exposures and outcomes, adjusted for traditional DR risk factors. Results At follow-up, 164 of 1273 (12.9%) eyes had incident DR, 17 of 1542 (1.1%) eyes had incident vision-threatening DR, and 75 of 269 (27.9%) eyes with baseline DR experienced progression. A longer AL (per millimeter increase) (risk ratio 0.58 [95% confidence interval 0.38–0.88) was associated with a lower risk of incident DR. No other associations were found. Conclusion Our findings show that a longer AL is protective of incident DR.

Purpose To examine the longitudinal relationship between baseline corneal arcus (CA) and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) in ethnic Indian and Malay adults in Singapore. Design Population-based cohort study. Methods Indian and Malay adults aged 40–80 years were recruited for baseline and 6-year follow-up visits between 2004–2009 and 2010–2015, respectively (follow-up response rate 73.9%). CA was assessed by ophthalmologists using slit-lamp biomicroscopy. The main outcome was self-reported incident CVD, defined as new myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, or stroke, which developed between baseline and follow-up. Multivariable logistic regression models assessed independent associations between baseline CA and incident CVD, adjusting for traditional CVD risk factors including age, sex, serum cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, and smoking. We further conducted sex-stratified analyses to identify possible effect modifications. Results Of the total 3637 participants (overall mean [SD] age: 56 [9] years, 46% male) with available follow-up data, without history of CVD at baseline, 208 (5.7%) incident CVD cases were reported. Participants with CA were more likely to have incident CVD (7.5%) than those without (4.9%). After controlling for traditional CVD risk factors, CA was independently associated with incident CVD (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.52 [1.07–2.16]) in adjusted models. In sex-stratified models, associations between CA and incident CVD were seen in men (1.73 [1.12–2.67]) and not in women (1.05 [0.56–1.97]). Conclusions CA is associated with incident CVD, independent of serum lipids and traditional CVD risk factors, in ethnic Malay and Indian men. Our finding suggests that CA is an additional observable indicator of CVD in men.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the addition of primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG)–associated genetic loci allows improved detection of PACG, compared to anterior segment parameters measured by imaging. Design Case-control study. Methods Genotype data of the 8 PACG single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs11024102 at PLEKHA7, rs3753841 at COL11A1, rs1015213 located between PCMTD1 and ST18 on Chromosome 8q, rs3816415 at EPDR1, rs1258267 at CHAT, rs736893 at GLIS3, rs7494379 at FERMT2, and rs3739821 mapping in between DPM2 and FAM102A) were available. Customized software was used to measure anterior segment optical coherence tomography (ASOCT) parameters, namely, anterior chamber depth, width, and area (ACD, ACW, and ACA) and lens vault (LV). Statistical analysis for positive predictive values was modeled using the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Statistical significance comparing predictive power of the different parameters was calculated using permutation. Results A total of 388 PACG subjects and 751 controls with both ASOCT and genetic data were available for analysis. Anterior segment parameters including ACD, ACA, and LV had excellent predictive value (AUCs >0.94), except ACW (AUC=0.65), for identifying PACG. The inclusion of genetic risk alleles (either singly or as a composite genetic risk score for 8 genomewide association study SNPs) to ACD only provided a +0.50% improvement in reclassifying PACG cases and controls over and above the discriminatory value of ACD. This +0.50% improvement was not statistically significant (P > .05). Conclusions Although significant on their own, the incorporation of genetic data in the context of anterior segment imaging parameters like ACD provided only a marginal improvement of PACG detection.

Purpose To determine the prevalence and risk factors of myopic maculopathy and specific optic disc and macular changes in highly myopic eyes of young Asian adults and their impact on visual acuity. Design Prospective cross-sectional study. Methods In total, 593 highly myopic (spherical equivalent refraction [SER] less than −6.00 diopters [D]) and 156 emmetropic (SER between −1.00 and +1.00 D) male participants from a population-based survey were included. All participants underwent standardized medical interviews, ophthalmic examination, and color fundus photographs. These photographs were graded systematically to determine the presence of optic disc and macular lesions. Myopic maculopathy was classified based on the International Classification of Myopic Maculopathy. Results The mean age was 21.1 ± 1.2 years. The mean SER for the highly myopic and emmetropic group was −8.87 ± 2.11 D and 0.40 ± 0.39 D, respectively ( P P Conclusions Our study showed that myopia-related changes of the optic disc and macula were common in highly myopic eyes even at a young age. The risk factors for myopic maculopathy include increased age, longer AL, and reduced choroidal thickness. Some of these changes were associated with reduced central visual function.

To describe the pattern and risk factor traits associated with visual loss (defined as either visual impairment [VI] or blindness) in a multiethnic Asian cohort of Malay, Indian, and Chinese individuals living in Singapore.A total of 10 020 participants from the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases Study were examined between 2004 and 2011. All underwent standardized examinations. VI (visual acuity20/40 to ≥20/200) and blindness (visual acuity20/200) were defined based on the US definition, better-seeing eye. Singapore Population Census 2010 was used to calculate age-standardized prevalence. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the independent and joint risk factors associated with visual loss.Malay individuals had higher age-standardized prevalence of best-corrected and presenting VI (5.4% and 19.9%, respectively) than Indian (3.6% and 18.0%) and Chinese individuals (3.3% and 17.2%). Cataract was the main cause for presenting and best-corrected blindness; cataract and diabetic retinopathy were the top causes for best-corrected VI, consistently observed across the 3 ethnic groups. Older age, female sex, lower socioeconomic status, diabetes, systemic comorbidities, and cognitive impairment were independently associated with increased risk of best-corrected visual loss (all P ≤ .027). Individuals aged ≥60 years with diabetes were 12.7 times (95% confidence interval, 8.39-19.23) likely to have best-corrected visual loss, compared with younger, nondiabetic individuals. Lower income and education explained 58.1% and 23.2% of best-corrected visual loss in this population, respectively.In this urban multiethnic Asian population, we identified common traits associated with visual loss across Malay, Indian, and Chinese individuals. These results will be useful for the planning and designing of eye health services and strategies for Asia's rapidly developing populations living in urban communities. Purpose To evaluate the diagnostic performance of swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT, CASIA SS-1000; Tomey Corporation, Nagoya, Japan) for angle closure detection, in comparison with gonioscopy, in a community setting. Design Reliability analysis. Methods A total of 2027 phakic subjects aged ≥50 years, with no previous history of glaucoma, laser (including peripheral iridotomy), intraocular surgery, or ocular trauma, were consecutively recruited from a community polyclinic in Singapore. Gonioscopy was performed by a single trained ophthalmologist. SS-OCT angle scans, which obtain radial scans for the entire circumference of the angle, were analyzed by a single examiner, masked to the subject's clinical details. On SS-OCT images, angle closure was defined as contact between the iris and any part of the angle wall anterior to the scleral spur. Different cutoff values of the degree of circumferential angle closure (≥35%, ≥50%, and ≥75%) were taken for analysis to assess SS-OCT performance in detecting angle closure. Results A total of 1857 subjects (91.6%) were included in the final analysis after excluding poor-quality SS-OCT scans. Almost 90% of the subjects were Chinese, with a mean age of 61.8 ± 6.7 years, and more than half were women (63.5%). The overall AUC of SS-OCT manual grading against gonioscopy was 0.84 (95% confidence interval, 0.81-0.88). The prevalence of angle closure on SS-OCT was 26.1% for the ≥35% definition, with an area under the curve of 0.80 (0.77-0.84), sensitivity of 82.5% (75.3%-88.4%), and specificity of 78.5% (76.5%-80.4%). The first-order agreement coefficient statistics for the 2-quadrant gonioscopic definition of angle-closure with corresponding ≥35%, ≥50%, and ≥75% angle closure definitions for SS-OCT were good at 0.89 (0.83-0.93), 0.88 (0.842-0.93), and 0.88 (0.831-0.99), respectively. Conclusions In this large community-based study, SS-OCT exhibited moderate performance for angle closure detection compared to gonioscopy as the reference standard.

To examine the prevalence, correlates, and impact of uncorrected presbyopia on vision-specific functioning (VF) in a multiethnic Asian population.Population-based cross-sectional study.We included 7890 presbyopic subjects (3909 female; age range, 40-86 years) of Malay, Indian, and Chinese ethnicities from the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Disease study. Presbyopia was classified as corrected and uncorrected based on self-reported near correction use. VF was assessed with the VF-11 questionnaire validated using Rasch analysis. Multivariable logistic and linear regression models were used to investigate the associations of sociodemographic and clinical parameters with uncorrected presbyopia, and its impact on VF, respectively. As myopia may mitigate the impact of noncorrection, we performed a subgroup analysis on myopic subjects only (n = 2742).In total, 2678 of 7890 subjects (33.9%) had uncorrected presbyopia. In multivariable models, younger age, male sex, Malay and Indian ethnicities, presenting distance visual impairment (any eye), and lower education and income levels were associated with higher odds of uncorrected presbyopia (all P.05). Compared with corrected presbyopia, noncorrection was associated with worse overall VF and reduced ability to perform individual near and distance vision-specific tasks even after adjusting for distance VA and other confounders (all P.05). Results were very similar for myopic individuals.One-third of presbyopic Singaporean adults did not have near correction. Given its detrimental impact on both near and distance VF, public health strategies to increase uptake of presbyopic correction in younger individuals, male individuals, and those of Malay and Indian ethnicities are needed.

Purpose To describe the relationship between peripapillary choroidal thickness and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in a population-based sample of nonglaucomatous eyes. Design Population-based, cross-sectional study. Methods A total of 478 nonglaucomatous subjects aged over 40 years were recruited from the Singapore Malay Eye Study (SiMES-2). All participants underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination, including Cirrus and Spectralis optical coherence tomography (OCT) for the measurements of RNFL thickness and peripapillary choroidal thickness, respectively. Associations between peripapillary choroidal thickness and RNFL thickness were assessed using linear regression models with generalized estimating equations. Results Of the 424 included subjects (843 nonglaucomatous eyes), 60.9% were women, and the mean (SD) age was 66.74 (10.44) years. The mean peripapillary choroidal thickness was 135.59 ± 56.74 μm and the mean RNFL thickness was 92.92 ± 11.41 μm. In terms of distribution profile, peripapillary choroid was thickest (150.04 ± 59.72 μm) at the superior and thinnest (110.71 ± 51.61 μm) at the inferior quadrant, whereas RNFL was thickest (118.60 ± 19.83 μm) at the inferior and thinnest (67.36 ± 11.36 μm) at the temporal quadrant. We found that thinner peripapillary choroidal thickness (PPCT) was independently associated with thinner RNFL thickness globally (regression coefficient [β] = −1.334 μm for per-SD decrease in PPCT, P = .003), and in the inferior (β = −2.565, P = .001) and superior (β = −2.340, P = .001) quadrants even after adjusting for potential confounders. Conclusions Thinner peripapillary choroid was independently associated with thinner RNFL globally and in the inferior and superior regions. This structure-structure relationship may need further exploration in glaucomatous eyes prior to its application in clinical settings.

Purpose To describe the rates of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and mortality in patients who have treatment with intravitreal anti–vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Design A retrospective population linkage study. Method We identified patients aged 40 years and above who received treatment with intravitreal anti-VEGF injections for AMD from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2011 at the Singapore National Eye Centre. We used a national record linkage database to identify patients who developed MI, stroke, and all-cause mortality after the first injection, excluding those with previous MI or stroke at baseline from the respective analysis. We compared rates of MI, stroke, and mortality to that of the total Singapore population. Results A total of 1182 individuals had an intravitreal anti-VEGF injection included in this analysis, with the majority receiving bevacizumab (n = 1011). Overall, 19 patients developed MI, 16 developed stroke, and there were 43 mortalities, giving an age-adjusted incidence rate of 350.2 per 100 000 person-years for MI, 299.3 per 100 000 person-years for stroke, and 778.9 per 100 000 person-years for mortality. This is comparable to the weighted incidence rates of the Singapore population (427.1 per 100 000 person-years for MI, 340.4 per 100 000 person-years for stroke, and 921.3 per 100 000 person-years for mortality). Conclusion The incidence rate of MI, stroke, and death in this cohort of AMD patients treated with anti-VEGF was low, and was not significantly higher than the age-adjusted incidence rate of these events in the Singapore population.

Purpose To objectively quantify choroidal thickness and choroidal volume using fully automated choroidal segmentation software applied to images obtained from enhanced depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (EDI SD OCT) in a population-based study; and evaluate the ocular and systemic determinants of choroidal thickness and choroidal volume. Design Prospective cross-sectional study. Methods Participants ranging in age from 45 to 85 years were recruited from the Singapore Malay Eye Study-2 (SiMES-2), a follow-up population-based study. All participants (n = 540) underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination, including EDI SD OCT for measurements of thickness and volume of the choroid. Results The intrasession repeatability of choroidal thickness at 5 measured horizontal locations and macular choroidal volume using automated choroidal segmentation software was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.97-0.99). Choroid was significantly thicker under the fovea (242.28 ± 97.58 μm), followed by 3 mm temporal (207.65 ± 80.98 μm), and was thinnest at 3 mm nasal (142.44 ± 79.19 μm) location. The mean choroidal volume at central macular region (within a circle of 1 mm diameter) was 0.185 ± 0.69 mm 3 . Among the range of ocular and systemic factors studied, age, sex, and axial length were the only significant predictors of choroidal thickness and choroidal volume (all P Conclusions Using a new automated choroidal segmentation software, we provide fast, reliable, and objective measurements of choroidal thickness and volume in a population-based sample. Male sex, younger age, and shorter axial length are the factors independently associated with thicker choroid and larger choroidal volume. These factors should be taken into consideration when interpreting EDI SD OCT–based choroidal thickness measurements in clinics.

Purpose To compare the prevalence and risk factors for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in 2 Indian populations, 1 living in urban Singapore and 1 in rural central India. Design Population-based, cross-sectional studies of Indians aged 40+ years. Methods Our analysis included 3337 Singapore-residing participants and 3422 India-residing participants. All participants underwent comprehensive systemic and ocular examinations and retinal photography. AMD was graded from retinal photographs according to the Wisconsin Age-Related Maculopathy Grading System. Systemic and ocular risk factors were assessed for association with AMD. Results Singapore-residing participants were older (mean age 57.8 years vs 53.8 years) and, after adjusting for age and sex, were more likely to have previous cataract surgery, higher body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, previous myocardial infarction, higher cholesterol, and lower creatinine levels, but less likely to be current smokers, than India-residing participants. The age-standardized prevalence of early and late AMD was 4.45% and 0.34%, respectively, in Singapore and 5.80% and 0.16%, respectively, in India. Shorter axial length was associated with early AMD in both Singapore and India, whereas previous cataract surgery, higher body mass index, hypertension, and lower cholesterol were associated with early AMD in Singapore but not in India. Conclusion The prevalence of AMD was similar among Indian adults living in urban Singapore and rural India, despite differences in cardiovascular risk factor profile and demographics.

PURPOSE: To present a case of bilateral neurotrophic keratopathy with miosis after bilateral Vidian neurectomy for vasomotor rhinitis. METHODS: Observational case report. RESULTS: A 68 year-old man presented with irritation and blurred vision in both eyes 2 weeks after bilateral Vidian neurectomy. Slit-lamp examination revealed a large epithelial defect, typical of neurotrophic keratopathy, in the inferior two-thirds of cornea in both eyes. Corneal sensitivity test with a Cochet-Bonnet anesthesiometer and electrical study of the blink reflex indicated bilateral trigeminal dysfunction. Both pupils were miotic, and tests with hydroxyamphetamine 1% and epinephrine 0.1% showed postganglionic sympathetic nerve damage. The corneal epithelial defects healed after 2 months of treatment with systemic prednisolone, vitamin B 12 and tarsorrhaphy. CONCLUSION: Neurotrophic keratopathy associated with dry eye syndrome may be a serious complication of Vidian neurectomy.

To assess the correlations between retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measured with scanning laser polarimetry and visual field (VF) sensitivity in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG).Prospective, comparative, observational cases series.Fifty patients with POAG and 56 patients with PACG were examined using scanning laser polarimetry with variable corneal compensation (GDx VCC; Laser Diagnostic Technologies, Inc.) and Humphrey VF analyzer (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc.) between August 2005 and July 2006 at Taipei Veterans General Hospital. Correlations between RNFL thickness and VF sensitivity, expressed as mean sensitivity in both decibel and 1/Lambert scales, were estimated by the Spearman rank correlation coefficient (r(s)) and multivariate median regression models (pseudo R(2)). The correlations were determined globally and for 6 RNFL sectors and their corresponding VF regions.The correlation between RNFL thickness and mean sensitivity (in decibels) was weaker in the PACG group (r(s) = 0.38; P = .004; pseudo R(2) = 0.17) than in the POAG group (r(s) = 0.51; P.001; pseudo R(2) = .31), but the difference in the magnitude of correlation was not significant (P = .42). With Bonferroni correction, the structure-function correlation was significant in the superotemporal (r(s) = 0.62), superonasal (r(s) = 0.56), inferonasal (r(s) = 0.53), and inferotemporal (r(s) = 0.50) sectors in the POAG group (all P.001), whereas it was significant only in the superotemporal (r(s) = 0.53) and inferotemporal (r(s) = 0.48) sectors in the PACG group (both P.001). The results were similar when mean sensitivity was expressed as 1/Lambert scale.Both POAG and PACG eyes had moderate structure-function correlations using scanning laser polarimetry. Compared with eyes with POAG, fewer RNFL sectors have significant structure-function correlations in eyes with PACG.

Purpose To examine if myopia is a risk factor for age-related cataract. Design Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods A systematic review of the literature was performed using PubMed and Embase from their inception to March 2013 for population-based studies with data on myopia and age-related cataract, including nuclear, cortical, and posterior subcapsular (PSC) cataract. Separate meta-analyses for case-control/cross-sectional studies and cohort studies were conducted using random-effects models, with results reported as adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and relative risks (RRs), respectively. Results A total of 38 007 subjects aged 30-97 years from 12 population-based studies were included in the meta-analysis. Meta-analysis of the 7 cross-sectional studies and 1 case-control study confirmed that myopia was associated with increasingly prevalent nuclear (pooled OR 2.81, 95% CI 1.94-4.06) and PSC cataract (pooled OR 1.93, 95% CI 1.49-2.49) but not with cortical cataract (pooled OR 1.08, 95% CI 0.90-1.30). Meta-analysis from 3 or 4 cohort studies showed nonsignificant associations of myopia with incident nuclear (pooled RR 1.25, 95% CI 0.71-2.21), cortical (pooled RR 1.21, 95% CI 0.67-2.19), and PSC cataract (pooled RR 1.26, 95% CI 0.92-1.74). Conclusions The associations of myopia with prevalent nuclear and PSC cataract are confirmed in meta-analysis of 8 study findings. The association of myopia with incidence of age-related cataract could not be confirmed in meta-analysis of 4 study findings.
