Abstract: Felix von Bärensprung was a pioneer of dermatopathology. His monograph of 1848, "Contributions to the Anatomy and Pathology of the Human Skin," was one of the first publications on that subject. Von Bärensprung also described and named erythrasma, elucidated the pathogenesis of herpes zoster, contributed a comprehensive review of the history of dermatology in an unfinished textbook of skin diseases, and was coauthor, together with Ferdinand Hebra of Vienna, of one of the most influential clinical atlases in the history of dermatology. The aim of this article is to introduce the museum we have at the Pathology Department, School of Medicine of the National University of Rosario, Argentina. The origin dates from to 1922 when Dermatology Professor Dr. Enrique P. Fidanza bought moulages at L'Hôpital Saint-Louis in Paris for the purpose of teaching. The collection included around 100 moulages and was worth approximately 1000 dollars. These pieces were exhibited at the Dermatology Department for many years and later moved to the Pathology Department where some pieces started being repaired, whereas others have deteriorated. The collection is composed of 100 moulages done by a French craftsman by the name of Niclet and 258 made by Argentine craftsmen including Alba Ramirez and G. Rouzaut, among others. The pieces are classified according to different dermatological diseases such as: the different stages of syphilis, lupus, benign and malignant neoplasm, infectious diseases, etc.

Dermatopathology lost a giant in the field with the death of Philip H. Cooper, MD, on Friday, January 30, 2015. The following obituary represents a celebration of his life and his contributions to our field.

Early in the 7th century of our era, the prelate and scholar Isidore of Seville compiled a Latin encyclopedia of classical learning that retained its popularity throughout the Middle Ages and into early modern times. This work, called Origines seu Etymologiae, treats many of its topics by tracing (often fancifully and incorrectly) the histories of their terms. From Book IV, which deals with medicine, 3 chapters containing glossaries of acute, chronic, and cutaneous diseases are here translated.

Recently, the term "T-cell dyscrasia" has been introduced into the literature of dermatology and dermatopathology. We review the historical background of the term dyscrasia and assess its definition and usage of it in hematopathology and dermatopathology. We learned that the term dyscrasia in the past was associated with meanings very different from one another and that no clear definition and no lucid concept of dyscrasia can be found anywhere in the literature of dermatology and dermatopathology. We conclude that the term dyscrasia in dermatopathology is used mainly to evade problems in interpretation of laboratory findings of a dominant T-cell clone, especially in the circumstance in which a treating physician fails to integrate molecular pathologic data with clinical features and histopathologic findings. Therefore, we suggest that the term lymphomatoid dyscrasia should be abandoned.

This historical perspective will introduce Frederic Woringer and review the original article by Lucien-Marie Pautrier and Woringer on Pautrier-Woringer disease (reticulose lipo-melanique, lipomelanotic reticulosis, dermatopathic lymphadenitis). The current status of dermatopathic lymphadenitis is synopsized.

Already in his lifetime, Carl Rokitansky was celebrated as the "pioneer of modern pathology." It was he, more than anybody else, who launched the era of morphology in medicine. Close correlation between findings uncovered at autopsy and clinical signs and symptoms helped to shape the view of diseases as distinct pathologic processes, rather than accidental constellations of findings. On the occasion of his 200 birthday, this review describes the life and work of Rokitansky, including his discoveries, misconceptions, and contributions to dermatopathology.

This article analyzes a medieval text known as The Secrets of Hippocrates. Neither secret (because of its wide circulation in manuscript and print) nor by Hippocrates, the work offered readers a means of offering a prognosis of impending death based on observable signs on the skin. Although the aphorisms that make up the text make little sense in a modern medical understanding, the Secrets of Hippocrates fits well within three medieval traditions: the tradition of secrets literature, the medieval medical tradition, and the tradition of medieval Christian views about the body. First, like other books of secrets, a genre to whose conventions the text closely adheres, the Secrets of Hippocrates offered a shortcut to socially useful knowledge: the ability to offer an accurate medical prognosis. Second, the treatise corresponded to the medieval physician's concern for the so-called nonnaturals, such as diet and exercise. Third, it fit with a medieval Christian notion that sickness and sin were related, as were sin and ugliness. Just as a leper's deformities were a window to his sinful soul, so skin pathologies could clue a medieval physician to the lethal disease hidden inside the body.

Darier first described dyskeratotic cells as infectious agents, but he later wrote that they were caused by abnormal keratinization. He grouped various inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic skin diseases under the term "dyskeratoses." It is argued herein that the dyskeratotic cell and the so-called dyskeratoses have not been defined in a consistent manner because Darier's concepts were incorrect. Darier's dyskeratotic cell is classified here as one type of necrotic keratinocyte. Some conditions in which dyskeratotic and necrotic keratinocytes occur are described.
