The article focuses on the relationship between modernity and "pre"history. The authors explain the historical argument that writing about the past inherently involves the idea of "pre" while constructing a notion of "post." They use an example of shell beads as a way to explore humanity’s deep past in a modern sense. They analyze the idea of modernity in the Upper Paleolithic period, examine how concepts such as agency and social class were developed, and discuss the modern notions of historiography.
