Zalom earned B.S. (1974, Zoology) and M.S. (1975, Ecology) degrees from Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. (1978, Entomology) from the University of California-Davis. I was accepted into several marine biology graduate programs on the West Coast: Southern Cal, UC-Santa Barbara, UC-Berkeley, and UC-Davis.
