Research indicates that the isopod wood-borer Sphaeroma terebrans can affect mangrove forest dynamics. The isopod is likely to attack mangrove prop roots in the lower turbid intertidal regions. Implications for forest management are discussed.

An overview is presented on the use of satellite remote sensing techniques to identify and monitor the Arctic's tundra-taiga region, using three Russian case studies. The techniques most often used are near-infrared and visible methods, but active microwave or radar methods are also gaining interest.

Low soil nutrient levels, microclimatic variation, and low seed rain density may be the primary factors limiting tree species density in the Arctic's tundra-taiga region. A short growing season and root and shoot damage may be factors limiting tree growth.
