The purpose of this study was to qualitatively explore the lived experiences of meaningful relationships among persons in 12-step recovery. The distinction of recovery is important as our study focused less on relational patterns during active substance use and more on their perception within their recovery. This phenomenological study followed Van Manen's six step approach of qualitative research. Data were collected from 7 participants through semi-structured one-on-one participant interviews. Participants were asked open-ended questions regarding their SUD recovery (e.g., "What is your experience of your capacity to be in meaningful relationships?"). Resulting from the analysis, four themes were extracted from the overarching theme of the Capacity for Meaningful Relationships in Recovery. The four emergent themes included Building the Foundation in Recovery, Sharing a Common Ground of Support, Giving Back – Helping Others, and Bridging Recovery to Family – The Biggest Accomplishment. The aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of participants' key attributes of sustaining long-term recovery as an emergent adult in college. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used to identify recurrent themes by analyzing participants' experiences. Eight participants were recruited from a collegiate recovery program at a university in the southwest United States. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data were transcribed verbatim. Data analysis followed IPA guidelines and procedures. Four superordinate themes emerged through the analysis process: Positive Recovery Identity Shift, Achievements and Accomplishments, Transformation of Agency, and Spirituality and Choice. Findings, which were integrated into the discussion, focus on relevant addiction recovery research implications. Limitations, future research implications, and clinical applications are discussed. This study examined the lived experiences of 12 students in recovery from Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) who were members of Collegiate Recovery Programs (CRPs) at three academically-recognized universities that are also designated to be "party schools." Using a three-interview series for in-depth phenomenological interviewing, this study investigated how students in recovery in CRPs make sense of their pasts, their present-day lives, and their futures. By analyzing students' use of narrative, their use of social and cultural discourses, and the shifting subject positions they adopted, co-opted, and disputed in their ongoing identity construction as individuals in recovery, three main discursive themes were identified: First, recovery discourses were primarily rooted in the discourses of Alcoholics Anonymous. A second set of discourses drove students to acquire the qualifications necessary to gain a professional career and to avoid falling out of their social class. In the third set of discourses, students in CRPs defined and claimed social power for themselves, and their CRPs helped them establish various means to be "cool" in college. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) thrives in isolation. Recovery requires healthy and supportive relationships in order to heal and grow. Many individuals in alcohol recovery find it challenging to establish and maintain meaningful romantic relationships, yet little research has examined this concept. With a particular focus on relationship insecurity and relationship safety, this study explored persons' experiences of romantic relationships in AUD recovery. Twenty-three participant interviews were analyzed. A conventional content analysis was first used to inductively uncover categories and then a summative content analysis was utilized to examine textual frequencies. Categories, themes and coded frequencies informed the overall analyses. Three main categories emerged with themes explaining participants' relationship experiences (Identifying Unsafe Relationships: negative and positive impact of conflict; Addressing Relationship Insecurity: anxiety and avoidance; and Establishing Relationship Safety: trust and recovery). Although there were several limitations, this study offers new insight on romantic relationships in AUD recovery. We emphasize the importance of establishing safety and addressing maladaptive attachment behaviors in order to better navigate toward healthy and supportive romantic relationships in recovery. Social stigma related to substance use can be a significant barrier to accessing treatment. Despite government institutions, psychological associations, and public advocacy groups promoting person-first language to decrease stigmatization, no prior study has investigated how those with a substance use disorder (SUD) respond to language used by mental health clinicians. The purpose of this study was to examine the experience of treatment language for persons seeking recovery from an SUD. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to analyze semi-structured interviews conducted with individuals who had recently received SUD treatment. The results indicated that language reception was highly dependent on five contextual factors: expertise of treatment professionals, relatability, readiness to change, awareness of the problem, and body language. Findings suggested that as participants identified peers or clinicians they could trust, language that had previously felt stigmatizing became informed with new and supportive meaning. In addition, the results indicated that participants responded to dichotomous language differently at various stages of recovery. The authors recommend that treatment professionals not only reflect on word choice to eliminate stigma and shame in treatment settings but also examine the contextual factors that may impact language reception. College settings can be challenging environments for students recovering from substance use disorder. Collegiate Recovery Programs (CRP) have emerged on college campuses across the United States to help mitigate the risks recovering students face and to promote academic and recovery success. The current article describes the first collegiate recovery home to follow an Oxford House [OH] model, established at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In the present preliminary study, qualitative data were utilized to explore the strengths and challenges of this recovery model and students' experiences in the OH collegiate recovery home. Key stakeholders in the creation of this collegiate recovery home (n =2), as well as current and former student participants (n = 6), were interviewed. The key stakeholders' interviews revealed insights on the home's creation, modifications made from the traditional OH model, and the challenges faced in implementing a collegiate recovery home. Rapid qualitative analysis of the interviews of residents revealed salient themes that describe students' experiences within the collegiate recovery home: (1) resident social support, (2) connection to the student body, (3) anonymous status of the house, (4) lifestyle, (5) optimism, (6) self-independence, (7) Collegiate OH is essential for sobriety, and (8) UNC involvement and oversight. Data on treatment for AUD (Alcohol Use Disorders) in developing countries are scarce. This study explores aspects of early recovery and correlates of alcohol use after residential AUD treatment in Uganda. 78 respondents were followed up using, among others, the ASI-6, HCSL-37A and WHOQOL–BREF. They were interviewed within two weeks after admission in residential treatment and six months later. Significant reductions in addiction severity and psychopathology, as well as improvements in Quality of Life (QoL) were observed after treatment. This study examined whether increases in purpose in life (PIL) over 2.5 years were associated withDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.)remission among 364 individuals with alcohol dependence. Remission from alcohol dependence at final follow-up was associated with significantly greater increases in PIL over time, compared to those without remission or with partial remission. The strong relationship between increases in PIL and remitted status at final follow-up indicates the importance of existential issues to recovery, and the value of incorporating these concerns into treatment and further investigating their role in initiating and supporting recovery. Recovery has been associated with a transition in social networks and peer influences in terms of moving away from using peers and engaging in social networks, including those in recovery. This article uses a quantitative data approach to compare a group of individuals who described themselves as in recovery from alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems with a group from the same city involved in alcohol and drug treatment. The measures used included social network involvement and an assessment of recovery capital. Those in recovery had more people in recovery in their social networks, fewer people in active use in their networks, and were much more likely to be involved in formal recovery support groups. They also reported higher quality of life, lower depression and anxiety, and higher levels of personal and social capital. The groups hardly overlapped at all in their functioning, and one of the major challenges of a recovery model will be reconciling the positive recovery networks and cultures of recovery with the narrower and less recovery focused world of many users of structured treatment services. One of the key aspects of recovery from substance dependence is making a transition from a social network supportive of substance use to one that supports recovery. This study assessed this transition in social identity in an adult therapeutic community (TC) at baseline and 2 weeks into treatment. Where residents increased identification with the TC, and reduced social identification with using groups, retention in treatment improved. As retention is a proxy measure of positive outcomes, this pilot suggests that facilitating residents' positive identification with the community in the first weeks of treatment may be central to retaining residents and improving treatment outcomes. Internationally, the alcohol and other drug (AOD) field has an increasing focus on recovery-oriented care, however there has been little research addressing the impacts in Australia. This study explores the attitudes of AOD clinicians toward recovery-oriented care in Victoria. Data was collected from 50 AOD clinicians and managers across six AOD services. Data collection included completion of a structured questionnaire addressing recovery attitudes and beliefs and semistructured group interviews. Although participants agreed with the broad concept of recovery, there was disagreement over the appropriateness ofrecoveryas a term. “Recovery Is Up to You,” a 12-week peer-run group experience for persons with major psychiatric problems, has had positive effects on important elements of recovery: empowerment, hope, and self-efficacy beliefs. Determining if such an experience would be equally efficacious for persons with addiction problems is the focus of this study. The 12-week course was experienced by eight groups of persons with addiction problems and the outcome, measured in terms of the response of participants and of the group leaders, was a favorable one as the course was found to be supportive of the recovery process, providing the participants and peer group leaders alike with new perspectives on meaningful living. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of surrender in the process of alcohol and drug recovery and relapse. This study used narrative inquiry where findings confirmed that the process of surrender is still a crucial element in long term recovery. Surrender is differentiated from compliance in that it comes from the inner voice, is mapped by the individual, and is spoken in the first person. Although triggers for relapse still exist, embracing a surrender identity allows addicts to gain control by giving up control, leading potentially to long term recovery through individualized support. Group relations conferences and 12-Step recovery thrive on the participants working in groups. This article is an inquiry into the integration of these traditions, in the Loyola Group Relations Conference, January 14–16, 2011. This conference recruited staff and members from the recovery community. 12-Step meetings were integrated into the conference design. The authors discuss the similarities and differences of the two models and examine the learning of conference staff and members. The authors conclude that Group Relations Conferences focusing on leadership, authority, and recovery from addiction can bring important group relations learning to the recovery community and vice versa. The study was based on a peer snowballing method involving members of a service users group in Birmingham, United Kingdom, who were asked to identify and interview members of their peer networks who had achieved 'sustained recovery' of one year. Two hundred and nineteen individuals were recruited who defined themselves as being in recovery, consisting of 132 individuals in medication maintained recovery and 87 in abstinent recovery. Those in maintained recovery were more anxious about using heroin and had lower self-efficacy, worse physical health, poorer quality of life, and more peer group members still using.
