For an nonequilibrium system, in the framework of the Keldysh formalism we explore the kinetics of the polariton condensate in a quantum well embedded in an optical microcavity taking into account pumping and leakage of excitons and photons. We make ab initio derivation of the quantum kinetic equations for the condensates and for reservoirs. We show that the real open polariton system has the non-Markovian character at times comparable to the Rabi oscillation period.

Spontaneous coherence and Kosterlitz-Thouless transition to superfluid state of exciton polaritons in the system of coupled quantum wells embedded in microcavity was considered at low temperatures. Contrary to the infinite two-dimensional system without confinement, the Bose-Einstein condensation of exciton polaritons in the system of coupled quantum dots embedded in optical microcavity can take place. Growth of confining potential steepness fleads to the increase of the critical temperature. Magnetic field influence on the critical temperature can be non-monotonous for certain region of control parameters because of the competition of two mechanisms: (i) growth of the effective mass of magnetoexciton which leads to decreasing of critical temperature; and (ii) growth of effective parameter of confinement, which increases the critical temperature and favors condensate formation.

The coherent generation and detection of acoustic phonons in a superlattice embedded in an optical microcavity is theoretically analyzed. In this optical resonator, femtosecond light pulses can be confined and amplified. We show that the acoustic phonon generation process is enhanced as the intensity of the incident electromagnetic field is amplified in the optical microcavity. The detection process is also enhanced by the optical microcavity: the maximum sensitivity is obtained not in exact optical resonance, but localized on the optical cavity mode edges, where the derivative of the reflectivity has maxima.

We describe the strong‐coupling of a small Quantum Dot (QD) with a pillar microcavity in the nonlinear regime where the number of photons matters. We consider the case where the QD is weakly coupled to one photon, but strongly coupled to two. We show how the emitted spectra then display both a doublet at resonance and a triplet in its vicinity.

In this work, we demonstrate that semiconductor microtubes fabricated by utilizing the self‐rolling mechanism of epitaxially grown strained bilayers can act as optical ring resonators. The mode structure is probed by the photoluminescence of an optically active material, i.e. self‐assembled quantum dots, embedded inside the microtube wall. We find a spectrum of sharp modes, which is in very good agreement with the result of a theoretical modelling of the microtube as a closed thin dielectric waveguide. This novel kind of microcavity, in which the optically active material is intrinsically located close to the optical field maximum, is a good candidate for both, new optoelectronic devices and cavity quantum electrodynamic experiments.

We present the comparison of optical properties of semiconductor stripe lasers including monolayer InAs/GaAs short period superlattice active layers with and without vertical resonant cavity, respectively. The differences between the performances of the conventional laser with vertical cavity indicate a positive influence of the microcavity on the stability of mode spectra as well as decreasing of threshold current density and their temperature dependence. For the first time the stimulated emission from these combined longitudinal and vertical resonant cavity structures was investigated which is highly interesting for potential device applications.

Microcavity lasers are of interest for both fundamental studies of cavity quantum electrodynamics and for potential applications in all‐optical networks. Microrings and microdisks are especially suited for fabricating polymer microcavity lasers. Current research with microcavity lasers has focussed on two areas : (1) laser threshold minimization and (2) directional laser emission. Laser emission is obtained with different optical pumping configurations according the cavity shapes. We present the lasing characteristics of optically pumped luminescent polymer microcavities. Geometrical parameters and pumping configurations are investigated to modify the lasing threshold and the directionality of emissions.

Observations of coupling induced normal‐mode splitting, photon antibunching and optical bistability are reported for a small number of Cesium atoms strongly coupled to a single mode of an optical cavity.
