Abstract

The ultrashort duration of laser-driven multi-MeV ion bursts offers the possibility of radiobiological studies at extremely high dose rates. Employing the TARANIS Terawatt laser at Queen's University, the effect of proton irradiation at MeV-range energies on live cells has been investigated at dose rates exceeding 109Gy/s as a single exposure. A clonogenic assay showed consistent lethal effects on V-79 live cells, which, even at these dose rates, appear to be in line with previously published results employing conventional sources. A Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE) of 1.4±0.2 at 10% survival is estimated from a comparison with a 225 kVp X-ray source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Experiments with conical wire array Z-pinches, have shown that a highly supersonic tungsten plasma jet can be formed, with the presence of strong radiative cooling resulting in a very small flow divergence. In this work, we explore the possibilities of exploiting a similar effect in imploding wire arrays to produce a high velocity, dense plasma projectile. 2D(r,z) MIlD simulations of imploding Z-pinches on the 'Z' generator, with a shaped mass per unit length, indicate the production of a projectile with velocity, density and diameter comparable to the final implosion velocity and stagnated plasma density and diameter in present wire array Z-pinch experiments. This represents an enormous (∼100TW) kinetic power delivered out of the end of the pinch. 2D radiation hydrodynamic simulations of the projectile impacting a solid tungsten foil are used to estimate the potential for generating both compact radiation sources and target plasmas of extremely high energy density. Results indicate that pressures of 2 Gbar and radiation temperatures of ∼660eV are produced in the target. 3D view factor simulations of a double ended hohlraum system with twin projectiles and converter foils are used to evaluate these radiation sources for use in indirect drive inertial confinement fusion research. Results suggest that a fluxequivalent peak temperature of ∼225eV could be delivered to a NIF scale ICF capsule. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Nuclear activation has been observed in materials exposed to energetic protons and heavy ions generated from high intensity laser-solid interactions (at focused intensities up to 5×10[sup 19] W/cm[sup 2]). The energy spectrum of the protons is determined through the use of these nuclear activation techniques and is found to be consistent with other ion diagnostics. Heavy ion fusion reactions and large neutron fluxes from the (p, n) reactions were also observed. Abstract

Protons of energies up to 37 MeV have been generated using ultra-intense laser-solid interactions. These protons can be used to induce nuclear reactions in materials to produce β[sup +] emitting nuclei of relevance to the nuclear medicine community for Positron Emission Tomography, namely [sup 11]C and [sup 13]N via (p,n) and (p,α) reactions. Activities of the order of 100 kBq have been measured from a single laser pulse.
