Abstract

The method of simultaneous lifetime and g factor measurements using a plunger device and the RDDS and TDRIV techniques is introduced. Results on lifetimes and hyperfine-interaction parameters for 2+1 states in 104-108Pd, 96,98,104Ru, and 92,94Zr, using a plunger device. Abstract

The lifetime of the 120Te first-excited 2+ state is measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) method after population by inverse-kinematics Coulomb excitation. The resulting mean lifetime of 10.4(2) ps provides a factor of ten improvement in precision relative to the previously accepted value. Abstract

Multipole mixing ratios for transitions between excited 2+ states and the 21+ state in 140Nd are measured using angular correlation techniques for beta decay reactions. Two transitions with dominant M1 components are identified, and the higher-lying 2+ states involved in these transitions are presented as candidates for the one-phonon mixed-symmetric 2+ state in 140Nd. Assuming pure two-state mixing between the one-phonon 2+ state and a presumed three-phonon symmetric state yields a mixing matrix element between these states, which is discussed in terms of shell effects on mixed-symmetric behavior in the N = 80 isotones. This report summarizes experiments performed on 164Dy using photon scattering techniques. The scissors mode in 164Dy has been reinvestigated using unpolarized photons from bremsstrahlung and polarized photons from a free electron laser. Abstract

Near-yrast states have been identified in the stable 91,92Zr isotopes using the fusion evaporation reaction 82Se(13C,xn)95-xZr at an incident beam energy of 50 MeV. Gamma-ray spectroscopy of states above the reported τ = 6 μs, Iπ=21/2+ isomer in 91Zr are reported for the first time with consequences for stimulating new shell model calculations which incorporate either the breaking of the N=50 shell closure and/or the inclusion of the negative parity h11/2 neutron intruder orbital. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A careful determination of the lifetime and measurement of the branching ratio for decay of the first 2T=1+ state in 42Sc has allowed an accurate experimental test of charge independence in the A = 42 isobaric triplet. A lifetime of 69(17) fs was measured at the University of Kentucky, while relative intensities for the 975 keV and 1586 keV transitions depopulating the first 2T=1+ state have been determined at the University of Cologne as 100(1) and 8(1), respectively. Both measurements give an isoscalar matrix element, M0, of 6.4(9) (W.u.)1/2. This result confirms charge independence for the A=42 isobaric triplet. Shell model calculations have been carried out for understanding the global trend of M0 values for A = 4n + 2 isobaric triplets ranging from A = 18 to A = 42. The 21 (T=1)+ → 01 (T=1)+ transition energies, reduced transition probabilities and M0 values are reproduced to a high degree of accuracy. The trend of M0 strength along the sd shell is interpreted in terms of the shell structure. Certain discrepancies arise at the extremes of the sd shell, for the A = 18 and A = 38 isobaric triplets, which might be explained in terms of the low valence space at the extremes of the sd shell. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

It is shown that the simple IBA-1, which acts in a single space, robustly predicts a sharp rise in ρ²(EO; 02+ → 01+) values in spherical-deformed transition regions, in agreement with the data. Abstract

Recent investigations of off-yrast low-spin states of [SUP94]Mo yielded evidence for one quadrupole phonon and two-phonon states with mixed proton-neutron symmetry. The mixedsymmetry assignments are based on the observation of strong M1 transitions and the measurement of their absolute Mi matrix elements ≈ 1µ[SUBN]. Abstract

The paper discusses the concept of Q-phonons and its connection to the concept of Qinvariants and the shape parameters of nuclei. It will also discuss some useful relations between Q-invariants and observables. These relations allow one to determine crucial nuclear observables such as the square of the quadrupole moment of the first 2[SUP+] state from lifetime data of the gammaand ground band which may have applications, in future measurements with tare isotopes beams. These concepts are discussed for the Barium, Xenon and Cerium nuclei with mass numbers around A = 130, because some of these concepts were either introduced or at least heavily used in the discussion of the nuclear structure of these nuclei. We show that O(6) limit is simultaneously a dynamical symmetry of the U(6) group of the Interacting Boson Model anal a critical point of a prolate-oblate phase transition.
