Abstract

Working group 6 proved to be a lively and stimulating atmosphere for the discussion of latest advances in high-intensity driven ion sources. There were 16 invited presentations dispersed over 6 working group sessions, but particularly noteworthy were the spirited and insightful contributions from the other working participants of the working group. The contributions could be grouped into two major themes, technology advances highlighting both the development of state-of-the-art targetry and also direct application of laser-generated ion sources. The second major theme focused on the improvement on ion beam properties from these interactions, so that these ion sources can reach the required parameters for the many suggested applications. Furthermore, there was a clear distinction in the experiments and methods depending on whether initially solid or gas targets were used. To give a overarching perspective to the working group, the participants, irrespective of their chosen topic, were hence asked to consider the following questions: What are the applications for laser driven ion beams? Abstract

We report on the all-optical tailoring of a gas target via a two pulse laser sequence for use in laser driven shock acceleration. A single infrared pulse drove a blast wave into the target, creating a steepened density profile, while a second drive pulse followed to generate energetic ion beams. Simulations confirm the sensitivity of the target to variations in pre-pulse energy in determining the outcome of the laser interaction. For a narrow range of pre-pulse energies, the main pulse launches an electrostatic collisionless shock into the target, capable of forward ion reflection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

By experiment and simulations, we study the interaction of an intense CO2 laser pulse with slightly overcritical plasmas of fully ionized helium gas. Transverse optical probing is used to show a recession of the front plasma surface with an initial velocity >106 m/s driven by hole-boring by the laser pulse and the resulting radiation pressure driven electrostatic shocks. The collisionless shock propagates through the plasma, dissipates into an ion-acoustic solitary wave, and eventually becomes collisional as it slows further. These observations are supported by PIC simulations which prove the conclusion that monoenergetic protons observed in our earlier reported experiment with a hydrogen jet result from ion trapping and reflection from a shock wave driven through the plasma. Abstract

We report our recent progress using a high-power, picosecond CO2 laser for Thomson scattering and ion acceleration experiments. These experiments capitalize on certain advantages of long-wavelength CO2 lasers, such as their high number of photons per energy unit and beneficial wavelength- scaling of the electrons' ponderomotive energy and critical plasma frequency. High X-ray fluxes produced in the interactions of the counter-propagating laser- and electron-beams for obtaining single-shot, high-contrast images of biological objects. The laser, focused on a hydrogen jet, generated a monoenergetic proton beam via the radiation-pressure mechanism. The energy of protons produced by this method scales linearly with the laser's intensity. We present a plan for scaling the process into the range of 100-MeV proton energy via upgrading the CO2 laser. This development will enable an advance to the laser-driven proton cancer therapy. Abstract

Measurements have been made of the magnetic field generated by the passage of high intensity short laser pulses through underdense plasmas. For a 30 fs, 1 J, 800 nm linearly-polarised laser pulse, an azimuthal magnetic field is observed at a radial extent of approximately 200 μm. The field is found to exceed 2.8 MG. For a 1 ps, 40 J, 1054 nm circularly-polarised laser pulse, a solenoidal field is observed that can exceed 7 MG. This solenoidal field is absent with linear polarised light, and hence can be considered as an Inverse Faraday effect. Both types of field are found to decay on the picosecond timescale. For both the azimuthal and solenoidal fields produced by such intense lasers, the production of energetic electrons by the interaction is thought to be vital for magnetic field generation. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In recent times, the development of high power lasers has advanced such that focused intensities of up to 1020 Wcm-2 at high repetition rates are achievable using laser systems on a scale which is suitable for a university scale laboratory. It is from such advances in laser engineering that many new phenomena have been observed by many groups throughout the world. An effect of specific applicable interest is in the field of compact laser-plasma accelerators. Here we present evidence that under particular plasma conditions, it is possible to generate beams of relativistic electrons which have low divergence and a small energy spread (less than 3%). Abstract

In this article we present electron acceleration by the interaction of a multi-TW, high repetition rate, table top laser at moderate intensity with an underdense plasma. We optimized this unique electron source in terms of the energy as well as the quality of the generated electron beam. The plasma period was chosen to be of the order of the laser pulse duration by adapting the plasma electron density. The waist of the laser focal spot was chosen to be larger than typical for comparable experiments. As a result, a very energetic, well-collimated, and bright electron beam was generated, which has the highest energy ever produced by laser-plasma interactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
