Multineutron transfer reaction
90 Zr+208 Pb has been studied at the energy close to the Coulomb barrier energy by using the PRISMA + CLARA set-up. In this fragment-? coincidence measurement, the selective properties of the reaction mechanism in the population of the specific states have been discussed. Based on the observed ? transitions of neutron transfer channels, namely89-94 Zr isotopes, their level schemes have been constructed and updated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The multinucleon transfer reaction
40 Ar+208 Pb has been measured at Elab = 260 MeV with the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. Mass and charge yields, differential and total cross sections, total kinetic energy loss distributions of different channels were simultaneously studied. Angular distributions were measured in a wide angular range by matching three different angular settings of the spectrometer. Absolute cross sections were obtained after the response function of the spectrometer was evaluated. These cross sections for different transfer channels allow the discussion of the role played by nucleon-nucleon correlations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The fusion excitation function of 32S+48Ca has been measured in a wide energy range, from above the Coulomb barrier down to cross sections in the sub-μb region. The excitation function has a smooth behavior below the barrier with a rather flat slope, and no maximum of astrophysical factor S vs. energy has been observed. However, other interesting features of the dynamics of this system can be noted. In particular, the fusion barrier distribution has an unusual shape with two peaks of similar height, lower and higher than the Akyu¨z-Winther barrier. Preliminary coupledchannels calculations and a comparison with nearby systems yield information on the possible influence of nucleon transfer channels with positive Q-value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multinucleon transfer reaction
40 Ar+208 Pb has been investigated with the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup in LNL, INFN, Italy. The experimental differential cross sections have been obtained for different transfer channels by measuring more than Δθlab = 20° covered by three angular settings of PRISMA. Results have been compared with the semiclassical calculation GRAZING. Since the understanding of the reaction mechanism depends strongly on the determination of absolute cross section, effect of transport of ions through PRISMA has been studied via a Monte Carlo simulation code. The transfer reaction for the
116 Sn+60 Ni system has been studied using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer at different bombarding energies from above to well below the Coulomb barrier. The experiment has been done in inverse kinematics and light target-like ions have been detected with PRISMA placed at very forward angles. Good mass, nuclear charge and kinetic energy resolutions have been achieved. Sufficient statistics has been accumulated to extract angular distributions for different bombarding energies have been extracted and the response function of the spectrometer has been studied to correct for the aberration due to the transport of the ions in PRISMA. The comparison between the present case and the previously measured96 Zr+40 Ca system, superfluid and near closed shells nuclei, respectively, should significantly improve our understanding of nucleon-nucleon correlation properties in multinucleon transfer processes. In recent years, a puzzling pattern has been observed in fusion cross sections well below the Coulomb barrier, characterized as a departure from the exponential-like behavior predicted by standard coupled-channels models, known as fusion hindrance. We report on recent fusion measurements performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, in particular the
48 Ca+48 Ca reaction down to the level of 0.6 μb. Unlike most recent results in this field, we do not observe the typical divergent behavior of the logarithmic derivative; but rather a sort of saturation, albeit at a larger value than predicted with a standard nucleus-nucleus potential. The fusion excitation function for 36S+48Ca with positive Q-value for the compound nucleus formation, has been measured from near the barrier down to very low energies, where “fusion hindrance” may be expected. No evidence of hindrance shows up in the measured energy range. Coupled-channels calculations have been performed with a large diffuseness parameter of the Wood-Saxon potential, reproducing the data above and below the barrier. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The large solid angle magnetic spectrometer for heavy ions PRISMA was operated at LNL in conjunction with the highly efficient CLARA set-up up to the end of March 2008. The AGATA Demonstrator is being mounted around the target area of PRISMA replacing the CLARA set-up. It will allow to carry out nuclear structure and reaction mechanism studies with better resolution and higher statistics. New detectors for light ions and slow moving heavy ions have been designed for the focal plane of the spectrometer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The PRISMA-CLARA setup, consisting of the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer for heavy-ions PRISMA coupled to the highly efficient CLARA array of 25 Clovers detectors, was operating at LNL since the end of 2003. The first experimental campaign has been completed at the end of 2004. Selected results on the structure of moderately neutron-rich nuclei, populated in multi-nucleon transfer and deep-inelastic reactions, are presented here. The present work takes advantage of the multinucleon transfer mechanism between heavy reaction partners to study the population pattern of excited nuclear states in near spherical Zirconium isotopes following the 90Zr + 208Pb reaction at an energy closed to the Coulomb barrier. Both the projectile and the target are well known closed shell nuclei offering an optimum situation for clean experimental and theoretical conditions. Total kinetic energy loss (TKEL) distributions were compared with calculations performed with the GRAZING code. The ability to use the TKEL as a selection tool for the states at different excitation energies was shown. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Available data on evaporation residue (ER) production and fission in a wide region of compound nucleus (CN) masses and entrance-channel mass-asymmetry values have been analyzed in search for the “starting point”, where the fusion suppression due to the quasi-fission (QF) effect starts to show up. Comparing cross sections for the ER production and fission in reactions leading to the same CN, but having different values of entrance-channel mass-asymmetry, one can extract the fusion probability for a more symmetric combination with respect to quite an asymmetric one, where no limitation seems to occur. An attempt to find correlations between the fusion probabilities derived for the considered combinations and some entrance-channel characteristics is undertaken. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The CLARA-PRISMA setup is a powerful tool for spectroscopic studies of neutron-rich nuclei produced in multi-nucleon transfer and deep-inelastic reactions. It combines the large acceptance spectrometer PRISMA with the γ-ray array CLARA. At present, the ancillary heavy-ion detector DANTE, based on Micro-Channel Plates to be installed at the CLARA-PRISMA setup, is being constructed at LNL. DANTE will open the possibility of measuring γ-γ Doppler-corrected coincidences for the events outside the acceptance of PRISMA. In this presentation, it is described the heavy-ion detector DANTE, as well as the performances of the first prototype. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interest in the study of the fission process of superheavy nuclei mainly deals with the opportunity to obtain information about the cross-section of the compound nucleus (CN) formation at excitation energies E*≈15–30 MeV. It allows one to estimate the survival probability of the superheavy composite system after evaporation of 1–3 neutrons, i.e. in “cold” or “warm” fusion reactions. However, in order to solve this problem deeper understanding of the coalescence processes between colliding nuclei, the competition between fusion-fission and quasi-fission processes is needed. The characteristics of both processes, their manifestation in the experimental observables and the relative contribution to the capture cross-section in dependence on the excitation energies, reaction entrance channel etc were investigated for a wide range of target-projectile combinations. Results of the experiments devoted to the study of the fusion-fission and quasi-fission processes in the reactions of the formation of the superheavy nuclei with Z = 102–122 are presented. The heavy ions 26Mg, 48Ca, 50Ti, 58Fe and 64Ni were used as projectiles. The choice of the reactions with 48Ca and actinide-targets was inspired by the experiments on the production of the isotopes 283112, 289114 and 283116 in Dubna using the same reactions. The 50Ti, 58Fe and 64Ni projectiles were chosen since the corresponding projectile-target combinations lead to the synthesis of even heavier elements. The experiments were carried out at the U-400 accelerator of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (JINR, Russia) and the XTU Tandem accelerator of the National Laboratory of Legnaro (LNL, Italy) using the time-of-flight spectrometer of fission fragments CORSET. The role of the shell effects, the influence of the entrance channel asymmetry and the deformations of colliding nuclei on the mechanism of the fusion-fission and the competitive process of quasi-fission are discussed. The recent results on synthesis of superheavy nuclei and the perspectives of the “hot” fusion reaction for the production of superheavy nuclei are considered. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multinucleon transfer reactions with 40Ca beams on closed shell nuclei 96Zr and 208Pb at energies close to the Coulomb barrier were studied using magnetic spectrometers. The comparison between data and calculations, based on semiclassical models, allowed to identify the different degrees of freedom that influence the evolution of the reaction, like deformation, single, and pair transfer modes. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experimental results on the fusion inhibition effect near the Coulomb barrier due to the onset of the quasi-fission mechanism are presented. The investigation was focused on reactions induced by 48Ca projectiles on different heavy targets and comparing them to reactions induced by light ions such as 12C and 16O leading to the same compound nuclei. Cross sections and angular distributions of evaporation residues and fission fragments have been measured. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Systems of intermediate fissility are characterized by an evaporation residues cross section comparable or larger than the fission cross section, and by a relatively higher probability for charged particle emission in the pre‐scission channel. In a theoretical framework in which time scale estimates of the fission process rely on statistical model calculations, the analysis of particle emission in the evaporation residues channel is the source of additional constraints on the statistical and dynamical models. This contribution will focus on our statistical and dynamical analysis of a more complete set of data from the system 32S+100Mo at ELab = 200 MeV. Statistical model fails in reproducing the whole set of data and no convincing estimate is possible of the fission time scale. In particular, while pre‐scission multiplicities can be reproduced without delay, the model strongly overestimates proton and alpha particle multiplicities in the evaporation residues channel irrespective of the statistical model input parameters and prescriptions used for the level density and the transmission coefficients. The analysis of the same set of data with a three‐dimensional Langevin dynamical model produces a very good agreement with the full set of data and indicates that one‐body dissipation plays a dominant role in the fission process, implying a fission delay 23–25×10−21 s.
