A planer undulator consisted of 24 periods of an 85-mm length has been installed in a 2.7-m straight section of the SAGA-LS, in order to provide brilliant soft x-rays for advanced researches on nano-surfaces and interfaces at the Saga-university beamline BL13. The photon flux of 2×1011 photons/100 mA was obtained at 133 eV, and the available photon energy was beyond 800 eV using higher harmonics. The achieved resolving power of the varied-line-spacing (VLS) monochromator system was 8,670 at 130 eV with slits of 15 um. This agrees very well with the value of 8,790 expected from the ray-tracing calculation. The details in the performance tests will be reported, indicating the high performance of the beamline BL13 for photoelectron spectroscopy in the soft x-ray region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An ultra-high frequency gyrotron is being developed as a THz radiation source by using a pulsed magnet. We have achieved the highest field intensity of 20.2 T. High frequency operation at the second harmonic will achieve 1.01 THz; the corresponding cavity mode is TE6,11,1. On the other hand, an ultra-high power gyrotron with a pulsed magnet is also being developed as a millimeter to submillimeter wave radiation source. The gyrotron is a large orbit gyrotron (LOG) using an intense relativistic electron beam (IREB). A pulsed power generator “ETIGO-IV” is applied for generation of the IREB. A prototype relativistic LOG was constructed for fundamental operation. The output of the LOG will achieve 144 GHz and 9 MW; the corresponding cavity mode is TE1,4,1. Cavities for 2nd and 4th harmonic operations were designed by numerical simulation for achievement of higher frequency. Modeling carried out demonstrates possibility of generation of gigawatt power level S band microwave pulse with duration of several nanoseconds using superradiation of short electron beam moving along slow-wave periodical structure. A 10 ns / 500 keV / 5 kA accelerator of Kanazawa University can be used in such experiments. It is shown that significant increasing peak power can be obtained by optimization of voltage and current pulses waveforms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
