Abstract

In this work we have studied the break-up of 12C following the reactions 10B(3He,pααα) and 11B(3He,dααα). The study was performed at the 5 MV tandem in Madrid. The break-up gives us information on excited states in 12C from the famous Hoyle state up to an energy of almost 18 MeV. Using a highly segmented experimental set-up the simultaneous detection of the three alpha particles in coincidence with a proton or deuteron respectively made possible a full kinematic reconstruction of the break-up. On the basis of the energies of the 3 α particles and their angular correlations it has been possible to determine the spin and parity of states for cases in which the assignment has been doubtful. Some of these levels will also de-excite via electromagnetic emission. The comparison between the energy of proton that populate a state of 12C and the sum of the energies of the 3α emitted from the same state makes possible to determine the presence of electromagnetic disintegration (γ) to lower states within 12C followed by the 3α break-up. Abstract

A complete kinematics study of the 10B(3He,pααα) and 11B(3He,dααα) reactions has been performed to study the multi-particle break-up of 12C resonances above the triple-alpha threshold. Four-particle coincidence detection gives us complete information on the direction and energy of the individual alpha particles from the decay of 12C, allowing us to extract new information on the structure of 12C which we shall present in this contribution. We have observed gamma de-excitation of the T = 1 15.11 MeV resonance using charged particle detectors, and have constructed Dalitz plots of the individual resonances in 12C using the complete kinematics information of the alpha particles which come from their break-up. Abstract

Advanced nuclear structure models predict the presence of the shell closures N = 14, 16 in neutron-rich O isotopes rather than N = 20. Spectroscopic investigations performed at the neutron drip line have recently confirmed such predictions showing that the 24O is a doubly magic nucleus (Z = 8, N = 16). Predictions within the shell model calculation for the 23,24O ground state have been confirmed measuring their spectroscopic factors. Results obtained in one-neutron removal reactions performed by using in-flight radioactive ion beams produced at the Fragment Separator FRS of GSI are reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The β-decay of 11Li and its core 9Li has been revisited with the aim to disentangle the very complex decays from unbound states in the daughters. The decay channels for the states fed by β-decay in 9Be are established including the 2.43 MeV state for which the analysis of αα and nα spectra seem to favour direct break-up of the level. For the decay of 11Li the β-delayed charged particle spectrum can be explained by the contribution of the 10.6 and 18.2 MeV states. The αα correlations indicates that decay through resonant He-isotopes are more likely than phase space distributed 5-body break-up. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present here a study of the three-body, nα6He particle break-up of 11Be(10.6) following 11Li β-decay. The emitted charged particles were detected in coincidence using a cubic set-up of highly segmented silicon detectors, allowing us to measure simultaneously energy and trajectory. Abstract

One-nucleon removal reactions at relativistic energies have been used as spectroscopic tool to obtain information about the ground state properties of several neutron-rich isotopes in the sd-shell. Using the FRS at GSI, the longitudinal momentum distributions of the emerging fragments after one-nucleon removal cross-sections were measured. The relative contributions of the remaining fragments in their ground and excited states have been determined from measurements of γ rays in coincidence with the longitudinal momentum distributions. The interesting case of 23O will be directly address. The interpretation of our experimental results in the framework of a simple theoretical model will favours a spin and parity assignment of 1/2+ for the 23O ground state in agreement with shell model predictions. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

One-nucleon removal reactions at relativistic energies have been used as spectroscopic tool to obtain information about the ground state properties of [sup 8]B and [sup 23]O. In the [sup 8]B case, the experimental breakup data on two different targets (C and Pb) allow a determination of the weight of the [sup 7]Be[sup *] component in the [sup 8]B ground state wave function as (13.3±2.2) %. These results are discussed in the context of a theoretical three-body model.
