Cutting fluid is an essential and basic part of manufacturing process especially in metal cutting works. It performs various functions such as friction reduction, heat curtailment, surface enhancement etc. In spite of several technical benefits, cutting fluids such as mineral oils, petroleum based fluids, synthetic fluids etc. contaminates the working environment including human health. Here the necessity arises for bio-friendly cutting fluids where research works are in full swing. Natural cutting fluids considered to be highly eco-friendly and creates healthy workplace in the engineering industry. The current paper overview the prospects of biodegradable cutting fluids for manufacturing Processes.

Magnesium is an excellent structural metal due to its light weight and high strength. But corrosion occurs rapidly in magnesium alloys than other metals. Corrosion affects the microstructure, mechanical properties and the physical appearance of the metal. Rusting and other types of deterioration drastically reduces the capacity equipment, resulting in loss of output as well as loss of equipment, or even life. Hence, many methods are used to combat the corrosion damage to critical structures and equipment. Development of Corrosion Inhibitors is gaining importance over the recent years to protect metals and alloys from corrosion. Synthetic corrosion inhibitors have good corrosion inhibition efficiency but pose a major health hazard and are highly toxic to aquatic life and the environment. The various available synthetic corrosion inhibitors and their deteriorating effects and hazards are discussed here.

Braille system and its evolutions have enlighten the life of visually challenged people. Transformations are occurring in braille device with respect to every new technological revolution for example the introduction of computers and mobile phones. These peoples are to be provided sufficient facilities to avail fortunes of all these developments. The project is the study of the thermal drilling process. The process is a hole forming process in the sheet metals using the heat generated by means of friction. The main advantage of the process over the conventional drilling process is that the holes formed using this process does not need any backing arrangements such as weld nuts, rivet nuts etc. Because the extruded bush itself acts as a supporting structure for the fasteners. This eliminates the need for the access to the backside of the work material for fastening operations. The major factors contributing the thermal drilling operation are the spindle speed and the thrust force required for forming a hole. The process of finding out the suitable thrust force and the speed for drilling a particular material with particular thickness is a tedious process. The process can be simplified by forming a mathematical model by combining the empirical formulae from the literature. These formulae were derived in the literature from the experimental trials by following certain assumptions. In this paper a suitable mathematical model is formed by replicating the experiments and tried to be validated by the results from numerical analysis. Joining of dissimilar materials opens up challenging opportunities in todays technology. Al/Cu weldments are used in applications that demands corrosion resistance, thermal and electrical conducting properties. In dissimilar joining mechanical and thermal properties result in large stress gradients during heating. The Al-Cu joints are lighter, cheaper and have conductivity equal to copper alloy. Thus, the focus is to cut the plant by machine with proper care and shoot system is cut properly avoiding any damage to the upper part of the plant and rather be cut in the root area to use it. These latest structures are purely depending on such joining technologies so that multi-material structuring can be possible practically. The real challenge lies on joining dissimilar materials of different properties and nature. Escalation of thermoplastic usage in large structural components also faces similar ambiguity for joining multi-material structures. Adhesive bonding, mechanical fastening and are the answering technologies for multi-material structures. In the manufacturing industries, and more especially in electrical engineering applications, the usage of non-ferrous materials plays a vital role. Today’s engineering applications relies upon some of the significant properties such as a good corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, good heat conductivity and higher electrical conductivity. Copper-aluminum bi-metal joint is one such combination that meets the demands requirements for electrical applications. In this work, the numerical simulation of AA 6061 T6 alloy/Copper was carried out under joining conditions. By using this developed model, the temperature distribution along the length of the dissimilar joint is predicted and the time-temperature profile has also been generated. Besides, a Finite Element Model has been developed by using the numerical simulation Tool “ABAQUS”. This developed FEM is helpful in predicting various output parameters during friction welding of this dissimilar joint combination.

Friction welding is a solid state joining technique used for joining similar and dissimilar materials with high integrity. This new technique is being successfully applied to the aerospace, automobile, and ship building industries, and is attracting more and more research interest. The quality of Friction Stud Welded joints depends on the frictional heat generated at the interface. Hence, thermal analysis on friction stud welding of stainless steel (AISI 304) and aluminium silicon carbide (AlSiC) combination is carried out in the present work. In this study, numerical simulation is carried out using ANSYS software and the temperature profiles are predicted at various increments of time. The developed numerical model is found to be adequate to predict temperature distribution of friction stud weld aluminium silicon carbide/stainless steel joints.

Friction taper plug welding a variant of friction welding is useful in welding of similar and dissimilar materials. It could be used for joining of composites to metals in sophisticated aerospace applications. In the present work numerical simulation of friction taper plug welding process is carried out using finite element based software. Graphite reinforced AA6063 is modelled using the software ANSYS 15.0 and temperature distribution is predicted. Effect of friction time on temperature distribution is numerically investigated. When the friction time is increased to 30 seconds, the tapered part of plug gets detached and fills the hole in the AA6063 plate perfectly.

Owing to high strength to low weight ratio, Aluminium matrix composites are widely used in diverse applications of many industries. This lucrative property is achieved by reinforcing the brittle ceramic particles in the aluminium matrix. Aluminium matrix composites are produced by liquid processing methods and solid processing methods. Nevertheless, liquidprocessing techniques stand out because of its simplicity and its suitability for mass production. In this review article, the production of aluminium matrix composites by different liquid processing technique is discussed and a comparative study is carried out.

Friction welding is the most suitable candidate for joining the dissimilar materials such as AA 6063 T6 alloy/Alumina for critical situations in high temperature and high corrosion resistance applications. In the present work, the numerical simulation was carried out to understand the mechanism of joining of AA 6063 T6 alloy/ Alumina rod by friction welding process. The developed thermo mechanical model is a highly nonlinear due to the interaction between the temperature fields and time dependent of the material properties. The developed numerical tool could be used to predict the temperature distribution, stress, strain and deformation of the dissimilar joints.

The work-material deformation is very large and both the tool and workpiece temperatures are high in thermal drilling. Modeling is a necessary tool to understand the material flow, temperatures, stress, and strains, which are difficult to measure experimentally during thermal drilling. The numerical analysis of thermal drilling process of aluminum metal matrix composite has been done in the present work. In this analysis the heat flux of different stages is calculated. The calculated heat flux is applied on the surface of work piece and thermal distribution is predicted in different stages during the thermal drilling process.

In this article, numerical simulation of transient liquid phase bonding of ceramic/metal joint has been carried out by using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software. To increase the wettability, aluminium sheet was used as an interlayer. Hence, numerical simulation of TLP bonding process is done by varying the bonding temperature. Transient thermal analysis had been carried out for each cases and temperature distribution was predicted by the developed numerical model. From the simulation studies, it is found that the decrease in bonding temperature enhances favourable temperature distribution and eventually improves the joint efficiency of graphite/copper joints.

Detection of special nuclear material (SNM) at extended ranges (>100 m) through the utilization of high energy (>20 MeV) bremsstrahlung photons requires optimizing the structure and interrelation of irradiation (beam-on) and detection (counting) periods. Conventional inspection schemes at lower energies and smaller distances primarily operate by pulsing an accelerator at frequencies of 0.1-1 kHz while collecting emitted radiation from the target under inspection for the few milliseconds in between pulses. Simulation and experimental results for long stand-off scenarios with source photons >20 MeV, however, indicate that two primary phenomena--(1) induced photoneutrons in proximity to the accelerator and (2) beam induced activation of air and soil--preclude the use of conventional inspection schemes. By considering the time structure and magnitude of the beam-induced photon and neutron backgrounds, signals of interest from the target, and natural backgrounds, inspection schemes have been developed to maximize signal to noise ratios (SNR). Analysis of the data indicates that the highest SNR values are found with short (2-5 s) irradiations followed by a 1-2 s period of collecting emitted neutron and photon signatures.

Noble gas excimer detectors are a technology that is common in particle physics research and less common in applications for security and international safeguards. These detectors offer the capability to detect gammas with an energy resolution similar to NaI and to detect neutrons with good energy resolution as well. Depending on the noble gas selected and whether or not it is in a gaseous or liquid state, the sensitivity to gammas and neutrons can be tuned according to the needs of the application. All of this flexibility can be available at a significant cost saving over alternative technologies. This paper will review this detector technology and its applicability to security and safeguards.

The need for large‐size detectors for long‐range active interrogation (AI) detection of SNM has generated interest in water‐based detector technologies. Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) were selected for this research because of their transportability, scalability, and an inherent energy threshold. The detector design and analysis was completed using the Geant4 toolkit. It was demonstrated both computationally and experimentally that it is possible to use WCD to detect and characterize gamma rays. Absolute efficiency of the detector (with no energy cuts applied) was determined to be around 30% for a 60Co source.
