Abstract

An energy resolution of ΔE = 12 eV (FWHM) has been measured for the [sup 55]Mn K[sub alpha1]-line (E = 5.9 keV) using a superconducting lead absorber (90 x 90 x 1.3 µm³) read out by a single aluminum superconducting tunnel junction (100 x 100 µm²). The total electronic noise contribution was measured as ΔE[sub elec] = 4 eV (FWHM). The superconducting tunnel junction is located on a Si[sub 3]N[sub 4]-membrane of thickness 0.3 µm, the lead absorber is separated from the superconducting tunnel junction's top layer by a thin layer of natural aluminum oxide. Abstract

A slight deviation from linearity has been detected for single aluminum superconducting tunnel junction (A1-STJ) detectors in the energy range between E = 1.74 keV and E = 6.49 keV. The nonlinearity can be explained by the escape of recombination phonons into the substrate. Varying the size of the junction shows that the recombination of the quasiparticles takes place after their diffusive propagation across the junction. Pulse shape analysis allows to identify background events that are caused by photo- and Auger-electron propagation. For a detector system based on a A1-STJ with a Pb absorber pulse shape analysis allows to separate events related to absorption in the STJ and in the absorber. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have investigated Al/Al[sub 2]O[sub 3]/Al Superconducting Tunnel Junctions (STJs) for their use as X-ray detector. The junctions have been fabricated on sapphire substrates both with and without a SiO buffer layer. It was found that the presence of the SiO significantly changes the Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] tunnel barrier properties. Experiments under X-ray irradiation from [sup 55]Fe X-ray source are reported. The spectra show that the SiO buffer layer succeeds in reducing the events coming from the phonons generated into the substrate. Besides, the charge yield is about 85% for STJs with the SiO buffer layer, quite high in comparison with the 5% of STJs without the buffer layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The performance of X-ray microcalorimeters with a Ti/Au Transition Edge Sensor (TES) and a Cu absorber has been investigated. With these microcalorimeters we achieve energy resolutions below 4.5 eV FWHM for 5.89 keV X-rays in combination with a response time of about 100 µs. The measured energy resolution is analysed and discussed based on spectral and RMS noise measurements. Excess noise was present which, in one case, could be fitted by noise proportional to 1α, suggesting the presence of thermal fluctuations in the TES. Variation in geometry and illumination was examined but did not influence the energy resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

SQUID multiplexers make it possible to build arrays of thousands of low-temperature bolometers and microcalorimeters based on superconducting transition-edge sensors with a manageable number of readout channels. We discuss the technical tradeoffs between proposed time-division multiplexer and frequency-division multiplexer schemes and motivate our choice of time division. Our first-generation SQUID multiplexer is now in use in an astronomical instrument. We describe our second-generation SQUID multiplexer, which is based on a new architecture that significantly reduces the dissipation of power at the first stage, allowing thousands of SQUIDs to be operated at the base temperature of a cryostat. Abstract

The need to analyze small amounts of materials on surfaces e.g. in semiconductor industry drives the development of high resolution X-ray spectrometers based on superconducting detector technology. Since low excitation energies needed for high spatial resolution in Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopes (FESEM) yield only X-ray lines in the lower part of the X-ray spectrum (<5 keV), line overlaps become a serious issue in the spectral analysis. This problem can be overcome with superconducting detector technology having better energy resolution and thus the ability to separate X-ray lines of important material combinations. For industrial applications the cooling system for the superconducting sensor plays an important role, since liquid coolants are not desirable in clean room environments. This work will cover the basic needs of the materials analyst as well as the practical implementation of superconducting X-ray spectrometers for industrial applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

With the simultaneous measurement of the temperature signal of a CaWO[sub 4] absorber crystal and the scintillation light, it is possible to reject the gamma and electron background in the search for dark matter particles. We report on an alternative new light detector design for the CRESST experiment. For the light detector we use iridium/gold phase transition thermometers with a special circular structure and an Al phonon collector on a silicon substrate. With this detector an energy threshold of 22.3 eV on a 5σ level was achieved. The light detector was tested in coincidence with a phonon measurement of a 300 g CaWO[sub 4] crystal. The phonons from the CaWO[sub 4] crystal were measured with an Ir/Au thermometer with a transition temperature of 32 mK. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Ge and Si detectors developed by the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) II experiment rely on the simultaneous detection of athermal phonons and ionization produced by interactions in the crystal. The athermal phonons provide both the total energy deposited in an interaction and the information about the position of the interaction. We describe extracting this information from the pulse shapes in the four phonon sensors. We present the result of measurements made on a Si detector from the first CDMS II production batch. Abstract

A possibility to search for elementary particles as dark matter candidates is to detect elastic scattering with cryogenic detectors. For the interpretation of the data one has to determine the detector response to nuclear recoils, the so-called quenching factors. They can differ for the heat-, for the scintillation- and for the ionisation-signal and can be measured by scattering of neutrons. The CRESST- and the EDELWEISS-collaborations have set up a neutron scattering facility for cryogenic detectors at the tandem-accelerator of the Munich 'Maier-Leibniz-Labor'. The scattering angle and the time-of-flight of the neutrons are measured by an array of liquid scintillator cells. The pulsed high energy (11MeV) neutron beam is created by nuclear reaction of a [sup 11]B on a H[sub 2]-gas target. The set-up and the results of first tests are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
