Abstract

The polarized sky emission can be detected by measuring its Stokes parameters through a correlation unit, usually called Hybrid Phase Discriminator (HPD). In the millimeter wave range and for rather large bandwidths, heterodyne receivers are not applicable, and the correlation units have to work in the frequency band of the radiometer. The SPOrt (Sky Polarization Observatory) project will investigate the polarized radiation by means four radiometers at the frequencies 22, 32, 60 and 90 GHz within a 10% bandwidth. This contribution deals with the study of a new configuration of waveguide HPD’s that will be mounted on these radiometers. The configuration presents a high degree of sensitivity for the detection of linearly polarized radiation and is suitable for those technologies that offer a high degree of accuracy. Moreover, the set up is particularly robust with respect to the mechanical uncertainties, which are more significant in the higher frequency bands. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. It consists of correlation polarimeters for direct measurements of the Q and U Stokes parameters, coupled to an optics providing a beam of 0°.5 (32 GHz) and 0°.2 (90 GHz). Abstract

Galactic synchrotron will be an important contaminant for forthcoming experiments on CMB polarisation. We investigate the angular power spectra of polarized Galactic synchrotron in several surveys (Parkes at 2.4 GHz, Effelsberg at 2.7 GHz and 1.4 GHz), showing that partial sky coverage analysis may lead to largely different results. Reasonable extrapolations to tens of GHz allow us to find a region in the (v, l) plane where the CMB polarized signal is expected to prevail largely. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The polarized sky emission can be detected by measuring its Stokes parameters through correlation radiometers. In order to compensate for the variation of the characteristics of the various components of the radiometers and of the environmental parameters, an on line calibration is required. In fact, the evaluation of the proportional factor between the detected signal and the level of the radiation is not sufficient for a complete characterization of the radiometers, since, in polarization measurements, the detection occurs in a two-dimensional space, that is the Q and U Stokes parameters. In this case special procedures and devices are needed.
