This paper presents the research program of the Experimental Accelerator Driven System (ADS), which employs a subcritical assembly and a 660 MeV proton accelerator operating in the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. Mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel (25% PuO[sub 2]+75% UO[sub 2]) designed for the BN-600 reactor use will be adopted for the core of the assembly. The present conceptual design of the experimental subcritical assembly is based on a core nominal unit capacity of 15 kW (thermal). This corresponds to the multiplication coefficient k[sub eff]=0.945, energetic gain G=30, and accelerator beam power of 0.5 kW. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
