Indonesia is located between three active tectonic plates, which are prone to natural disasters such as earthquake, volcanic eruption, and also giant tidal wave-tsunami. Adequate infrastructure plays an important role in disaster mitigation, yet without good public awareness, the mitigation process won't be succeeded. The absence of awareness can lead to infrastructure mistreatment. Several reports on lack of understanding or misinterpretation of disaster mitigation especially from rural and coastal communities need to be solved, especially from communication aspects. This is an interdisciplinary study on disaster mitigation communication design and education strategy from visual communication design studies paradigm. This paper depicts research results which applying vernacular design base to elaborate sustainable mitigation communication and education strategy on various visual media and social campaigns. This paper also describes several design approaches which may becomes way to elaborate sustainable awareness and understanding on disaster mitigation among rural and coastal communities in Indonesia. The experimental method is useful not only in helping students understand science, but also in developing students' skills and attitudes. However, for various reasons, many teachers in Indonesia do not implement the method effectively. As a continuation of previous analysis concerning practical science activities undertaken by SEAMEO QITEP in science, this study aimed to gather information about schools' laboratory activities in three regions of Indonesia, and compare their activities with the 2013 Science Curriculum. This research aimed to determine (1) the influence of the use of a contextual teaching and learning (CTL) approach on critical thinking ability, (2) the influence of the use of the CTL approach on conceptual understanding, and (3) the relationship between critical thinking ability and conceptual understanding. The research adopted a quasiexperimental approach using a pre-test/post-test control group design. The population in this research comprised all grade XI pupils in State Senior High School 1 Prambanan consisting of eight classes. Two classes were selected based on the random cluster sampling technique: XI MIPA 1 as the control class and XI MIPA 4 as the experimental class. The experimental class used the CTL approach and the control class used a non-CTL approach. The instruments were an observation sheet for the implementation of CTL, and a paper test of critical thinking ability and conceptual understanding. The data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and Pearson correlation. The results showed (1) that CTL had a positive influence on critical thinking ability, (2) CTL had a positive influence on conceptual understanding, and (3) there was a high correlation between critical thinking ability and conceptual understanding, such that the better the critical thinking ability, the higher the conceptual understanding. According to the regulation of Minister of National Education Republic of Indonesia Number 26 of 2008, there are two tracks for becoming head of science laboratory in schools: through the teacher track and through the technician track. One of the requirements for being a head of science laboratory following the teacher track is to have a head of science laboratory certificate issued by a university or other institution established by the government. Until recently, only a few schools have had a head of science laboratory in accordance with the requirements and demands of the competencies defined. In 2017, SEAMEO QITEP in Science (SEAQIS) conducted four training courses for head of science laboratory located in Siak Regency, Garut Regency, Gowa Regency, and Jayapura City. Through the implementation of this method training, research was conducted aiming to determine the effectiveness of the training, the significance of the cognitive change in participants, the participants' perceptions, and the factors affecting their cognitive abilities. The research employed a quasi-experimental research method, and a one group pre- and post-test design. The research instruments used were test items and a questionnaire form. Through the instruments used, the research obtained data on the pre- and post-test scores of the participants, and data on participants' responses. The data were then analyzed using normalized gain interpretation, a paired t-test, and percentage values of participants' perceptions. This paper describes the results based on the goal. The results of the research are to be used as the basis for improving and developing the training of Head of Science Laboratory Candidates held by SEAQIS, aiming to enhance the competence of teachers and educational personnel in science. The research aims to investigate students' collaborative problem solving skills (CPS) through constructed interactive animation. The research was carried out in Public Junior High School in Bandung Indonesia. The number of participant was 39 of samples of 8th grade, Junior High School students. The method used in this research was descriptive. The paper provides the result of observation of students' CPS in 11aspects, they are: 1) Discovering perspectives and abilities of team members, 2) Discovering the type of collaborative interaction required and establishing goals, 3) understanding roles to solve problem, 4) building a shared representation and negotiating the meaning of the problem (common ground), 5) Identifying and describing tasks to be completed, 6) Communicating with team members about the actions performed, 7) enacting plans, 8) following roles of engagement, 9) monitoring and repairing the shared understanding, 10) monitoring results of action and evaluating success in solving the problem, 11) Monitoring, providing feedback and adapting the team organization and roles. The result of study indicated that students were good in doing communication with team member (aspect 6) which showed by their achieved highest of this aspect. On the other hand they need to improve their monitoring, providing feedback, and adapting the team organization and roles ability (aspect 11), as the score of this aspect is the lowest. SMK is the vocational education that prepare students to be able to work. So that the graduates should have the competence needed by business and industry. Competencies required by business and industry is always changing according to the development of science and technology. SMK then have to change and evolve. The development of vocational can utilize through teachers internships program in business and industry, so the teacher as a mediator for vocational development. Teachers Internships program in the business and industry is to meet the needs for vocational and business and industry. The present paper describes a study on the teachers' industrial internship program which is conducted through a qualitative research method on two vocational high schools that offer automotive program in Sidoarjo Regency, Indonesia, each of which is private and public school. The findings of the study is that the teachers Internships program as the contribution of industry to the development of vocational schools, the main human resource development. Science teaching is basically value laden activities. One of the values tells that science is not related to any religion. This secular value is reflected to science teaching in many places, including religious country like Indonesia. However, we argue that in Indonesia science teaching should not be secular as in the Western country since one of the basic aim of National Education according to the Indonesian constitution Undang-Undang Dasar 1945, is to inculcate faith and god-fearing to One God Almighty. As we know, Indonesia is a Moslem country and has many Islamic schools in it too. Thus, it is important to design a science teaching framework base on Islamic teaching to fulfill the basic aim of National Education This paper discusses concept of nature, the key term in science, based on Islamic view that may used as a framework to develop Islamic science teaching. In Islam, science has a strong relation to religion since nature reflects the existence of the Creator. This concept is derived from the analysis of several verses from Qur'an as the main source of Islamic teaching. There are several principle can be derived from this analysis. Firstly, visible world is not the only world, but there is also the unseen world. Secondly, the nature is not merely matter that doesn't have any sacred value, but it is the indication or symbol of God existence and His Nature. Poverty eradication is one of the sustainable development goals that need to be fulfilled as soon as possible. Earlier researches informed that human resource development, particularly children's education, contributes very much to this. One of those studies concluded there is a substantial relationship between household income/expenditure with educational achievement of their children. The objective of this research is to determine the mobility effect and household expenditure elasticity to mean years of children's schooling based on Panel Social Economic Household Survey 2011-2013 in Indonesia. It is found that household expenditure mobility is more common in the three middle quintiles than in the lowest or top quintile, both in urban and rural areas. Also, a household's per capita expenditure has more influence on mean years of children's schooling in urban areaa than in rural. In Indonesia education is one of the important aspects to be implemented by anyone aiming to educate and create a reliable and resilient generation. One of the forms of education is higher education. As we know, registration data in higher education, such as student profile data, courses, KRS (Study Plan Card), alumni data, English language skills, and so on can be important information to make a policy that improves the quality of a college, and especially for a department. There is quite a large amount of this data if it has been collected for several years. This research uses data gathered, namely, student profile data, GPA, Senior High School, and residence of student to get information of our student enrollment data. By using classification methods such as Naïve Bayes Classifier and Support Vector Machine, it can be used to predict whether the student graduates in a timely fashion or not. Timely graduation is defined by student graduating in four years or eight semesters, or less. Based on the research, the results obtained for this classification by using the method of Support Vector Machine are better than the Naïve Bayes Classifier, with an accuracy of 69.15% for this data. Currently, a manipulative is commonly used in mathematics education as a supported tool for teaching and learning. With engaging natural interaction of a concrete manipulative and advantages of a learning cycle approach, we proposed the concrete manipulative-based learning cycle unit to promote mathematics learning. Our main objectives are to observe possibilities on the use of a concrete manipulative in learning geometry, and to assess students' understanding of a specific topic, angle properties in a circle, of secondary level students. To meet the first objective, the concrete manipulative, called CricleBoard-Pro, was designed. CircleBoard-Pro is built for easy to writing on or deleting from, accurate angle measurement, and flexible movement. Besides, learning activities and worksheets were created for helping students to learn angle properties in a circle. Twenty eighth graders on a lower secondary school in Indonesia were voluntarily involved to learn mathematics using CircleBoard-Pro with the designed learning activities and worksheets. We informally observed students' performance by focusing on criteria of using manipulative tools in learning mathematics while the learning activities were also observed in terms of whether they work and which step of activities need to be improved. The results of this part showed that CircleBoard-Pro complied the criteria of the use of the manipulative in learning mathematics. Nevertheless, parts of learning activities and worksheets need to be improved. Based on the results of the observation, CircleBoard-Pro, learning activities, and worksheets were merged together and became the CircleBoardPro embedded on 5E (Engage - Explore - Explain - Elaborate - Evaluate) learning cycle unit. Then, students understanding were assessed to reach the second objective. Six ninth graders from an Indonesian school in Thailand were recruited to participate in this study. Conceptual tests for both pre- and post-test, and semi-structured interview were used. Students' pre- and post-test answers were analyzed not only by descriptive statistics but also in qualitatively discussion. The dialogues between the interviewer and interviewees were transcribed and analyzed to find in-depth understanding. Finally, we can conclude that the participated students had better comprehension of angle properties in a circle even they could not perform proof by themselves. This research is directed to recognize the main characters of shell morphology that can easily be used to distinguish the two local species of Bivalia Unionidae in the Brantas River in East Java (Indonesia) which are very similar, namely Rectidens sumatrensis and Elongaria orientalis. A total of 49 individuals sampled specimens of both species were characterized based on identification guide Jutting (1953). About of 30 of shell morphological characters were observed, there are three characters identified in specimens Rectidens sumatrensis that can be used to distinguish from the specimen Elongaria orientalis, namely the presence of wrinkles noticeable on the surface structure of the interior of the shell; anteriorly of the greatest diameter of the shell, there is generally a shallow concavity in the flanks; and the two cardinal teeth in each valve shells left and right are relatively undeveloped. Research Based Learning is learning that requires students to have exploration skills related to their field. By doing so, students are encouraged to create skills in managing the higherorder of abstraction in order to resolve any problems encountered. The study was done to make the schemes and sequences of learning needed by the students in order to help them to explore first ideas for their upcoming thesis . The scheme development resulted in five stages consisting of 1) identifying research journals; 2) track the development of research topics; 3) reviewing research journals; 4) discussing the results of the reviews; and 5) formulating the research topic . Furthermore, the application of 5 the stage receives percentage agreement of students was 85.9%. To examine ways for a sustainable approach to disaster education, a study conducted at 15 public elementary schools in Banda Aceh. The result found that many schools stopped the disaster education activities, because of the image of costly activities and sense of dependency on external actors. This research aimed at: i) exploring the needs of disaster education laboratory for elementary school; ii) determining the sample of disaster education laboratory model and iii) designing the initial draft/ prototype of laboratory model, iv) validating the conceptual theory through focus group discussion, justification and expert judgement, and v) evaluating and revising the prototype. In general, the Disaster Education Prototype Laboratory consist of: i) multimedia corner, ii) mini library, iii) mini expo and iv) disaster visual aids. This study is intended to examine the development and validation of simple machines instructional material that developed based on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) framework that provides guidance to help students learn and practice for real life and enable individuals to use knowledge and skills they need to be an informed citizen. Sample of this study consist of one class of 8th grader at a junior secondary school in Bandung, Indonesia. To measure student learning, a pre-test and post-test were given before and after implementation of the STEM based instructional material. In addition, a questionnaire of readability was given to examine the clarity and difficulty level of each page of instructional material. A questionnaire of students' response towards instructional material given to students and teachers at the end of instructional material reading session to measure layout aspects, content aspects and utility aspects of instructional material for being used in the junior secondary school classroom setting. The results show that readability aspect and students' response towards STEM based instructional material of STEM based instructional material is categorized as very high. Pretest and posttest responses revealed that students retained significant amounts information upon completion of the STEM instructional material. Student overall learning gain is 0.67 which is categorized as moderate. In summary, STEM based instructional material that was developed is valid enough to be used as educational materials necessary for conducting effective STEM education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research reports a study of student worksheet based on discovery learning on Mechanical Behavior of Materials topics under Android application (Android worksheet application) for vocational high school. The samples are Architecture class X students of SMKN 4 (a public vocational high school) in Tangerang Selatan City, province of Banten, Indonesia. We made 3 groups based on Intellectual Quotient (IQ). They are average IQ group, middle IQ group and high IQ group. The method of research is used as a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group design. The technique of sampling is purposive sampling. Instruments used in this research are test instruments and nontest instruments. The test instruments are IQ test and test of student's achievement. For the test of student's achievement (pretest and posttest) we provide 25 multiple choice problems. The non-test instruments are questionnaire responses by the students and the teacher. Without IQ categorized, the result showed that there is an effect of Android worksheet application on student's achievement based on cognitive aspects of Revised Bloom's Taxonomy. However, from the IQ groups point of view, only the middle IQ group and the high IQ group showed a significant effect from the Android worksheet application on student's achievement meanwhile for the average IQ group there was no effect. This study aims to determine the characteristics of good mathematics lecturers based on students' and lecturers' perspectivesand compare the characteristics of good lecturers/teachers which are in accordance with the findings of some previous studies and the theories. This study is survey study. The Data were collected through questionnaires and interview. The population consists of some mathematics students from the first level through the third level and some mathematics education lecturers of a private university in West Java. Qualitative analysis was undertaken to examine the results of questionnaires and interviews. The finding shows that the characteristic of good mathematics lecturers is inspiring. They can inspire other mathematics lecturers and educators in general. Based on the students and lecturers' perspective, some characteristics of good mathematics lecturers are mastering the materials well, being on time, being objective, understanding the students, presenting the materials with clearly, and being disciplined. Some other characteristic mentioned are: teaching eagerly, being unhurried, being friendly, giving exemplary and preparing the lesson well. These characteristics are not much different from the characteristics described by some previous researchers and some theories of experts, i.e. mastering the subject matters well, pedagogic, and work wholeheartedly.
