Vortices phenomenon becomes one of solutions to enhance heat transfer performance in shell-and-tube type of heat exchanger. Vortex generator is a device that can generate moving vortices of fluid to get good mixing fluid in heat transfer. The aim of this study is to find the effect of rectangular and delta winglet vortex generator if they are applied in inner tubular pipe heat exchanger, especially for shell-and-tube heat exchanger. Two types of winglet vortex generator were mounted in inner circular pipe then examined in turbulent flow with 6000-10000 Reynold numbers. The result of simulation showed that the use of rectangular and delta winglet can improve heat transfer performance.

A compact heat exchanger can be found in air conditioning, automotive industry, chemical processing, etc. Most compact heat exchangers use gas as a heating or cooling fluid. However, gas has high thermal resistance, which affects lower heat transfer. In order to reduce thermal resistance on the gas side, the convection heat transfer coefficient is increased. One effective way to enhance the convection heat transfer coefficient is to use a vortex generator. Vortex generators are surface protrusions that are able to manipulate flow resulting in an increase in convection heat transfer coefficient by enhancing the mixture of air near the wall with the air in the main flow. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the thermal and hydraulic characteristics of airflow through the perforated concave delta winglet vortex generator. This study was conducted on delta winglet vortex generators (DW VGs) and concave delta winglet vortex generator (CDW VGs) with the 45° angle of attack with a number of hole three-holes that applied on every vortex generator with one-line fitting, two-line fitting, and three-line fitting respectively. Results of simulation revealed that heat transfer coefficient (h) for perforated CDW VGs decrease 16.07% and pressure drop decrease 7% compare to that without hole configuration at Reynolds number of 8600. Convection heat transfer coefficient for perforated DW VGs decrease 13.76% and pressure drop decrease 5.22% compare to delta winglet without hole at Reynolds number of 8600.

The present work examines the local structure and downstream evolution of both longitudinal vortexes behind the vortex generators and the helical tip vortices generated by the rotating 3-bladed rotor. Both wakes flow with the strong longitudinal or helical vortices have been studied by stereo PIV measurements in a wind tunnel or a water flume accordingly. The vorticity field was calculated from the measured velocity fields. The downstream development of vortex local cores investigates by using self-similarity scaling arguments and local helical symmetry tests simultaneously. It was analyzed Batchelor’s vortex and 2-D vortex with a helical vortex to use a combined vortex model of the helical self-similarly for a comparison with the experimental data. The experimental study of the shape of both vortices was carried out to describe the downstream development of the expanding vortex core by the new combined vortex model based on the experimental observations triggered by previous studies of wakes behind vortex generators and rotors. It was established that the local helical symmetry with a simple correspondence between the axial and azimuthal velocity in the cores exists in all cross-sections along of both longitudinal and helical vortices. It is also found that the averaged vorticity profiles inside the core of both vortices are self-similar. This knowledge is important for the fundamental understanding of the vortex flows, as well as for the aspect of applications, for which parametric descriptions can be substantially reduced in terms of required time and cost by easing engineering models.

The problem of the accuracy improving is considered for vortex method. It is shown, that the airfoil surface line representation as a polygon consisting of rectilinear panels can lead to incorrect behavior of the numerical solution of boundary integral equation with respect to unknown vortex sheet intensity, especially in case of considerably different lengths of the neighboring panels. The approach is developed which makes it possible to take into account explicitly the curvature of the surface line. The approximate formulae for the coefficients of linear system are derived which permit to obtain rather “good” numerical solution for arbitrary airfoil discretization.

Kelvin wave, generated after helical vortex reconnection was observed propagating on precessing helical vortex tube in swirling flow of real fluid in conical diffusor. High-speed visualization was done using cavitation in the vortex core and Kelvin wave amplitude decay was measured.

The solution of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) remains one of the effective tools for the numerical modeling of turbulent flows, especially in the field of industrial development. To close the equations, a hierarchy of different-level turbulence models is used, including the two-parameter models of shear stress transfer (SST-models) in the versions of 1993 and 2003. Ten years ago, a correction for the curvature of streamlines was suggested for the calculation of detached flows in the framework of the Rodi-Leshziner-Isaev approach. In recent years, it has been systematically verified using multi-unit computing technologies (MCT) in the VP2/3 package (speed-pressure, 2D / 3D). NCT are based on block intersecting grids intended for displaying different-scale structural elements of separated flows of incompressible fluid and viscous gas. Stationary and periodic, two-dimensional and spatial, sub- and supersonic flows in problems of internal and external aerodynamics, as well as convective heat exchange, having experimental analogs are considered as test problems. The flow in channels with square and circular cavities, heat transfer in a channel with a spherical dimple, flow past a plate with a cylindrical well and a rectangular column, a cylinder with a protruding disc, a semicircular profile, heat transfer during the flow of a single cylinder and a cylinder package represent a rather incomplete list of solved problems. Numerical predictions agree with acceptable accuracy with the experimental data obtained in wind tunnels, on the aeroballistic track and thermophysical stands at the Institute of Mechanics of the MV Lomonosov Moscow State University. Lomonosov, Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, St. Petersburg State University Peter the Great, IT named after S. Kutateladze of the SB RAS, Rostock and Southampton universities, etc. Comparative analysis of the corrected SST-model with similar models showed that the use of the standard SST-model can lead to a significant error in the estimation of the integral power characteristics (up to 30% in the case of two-dimensional periodic flows). The proposed model, corrected for curvature of streamlines, made it possible to obtain a number of breakthrough results in the area of vortex intensification of heat transfer by oval trenches and aerodynamics of thickened bearing surfaces with vortex cells.

This paper presents a complex numerical and experimental investigation of a supersonic vortex wake and its features depending on the Mach number. The aim of this work is to obtain the characteristics of the vortex wake behind a wing at large distance from the wing. The supersonic flow around a straight wing with sharp leading and trailing edges was considered at an attack angle of 10 degrees. Numerical simulations were carried out at the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics RAS using the parallel algorithm for turbulent flow simulation. In the numerical studies, an approach based on the URANS method with using the SA turbulence model was applied. Used spatial approximation of the equations was carried out by the finite volume method with the TVD and WENO reconstruction schemes which is of the second and third order of accuracy respectively. The implicit scheme based on the LU-SGS method was used for the time approximation. Unstructured grid with about 15 million hexagonal cells was used. An investigation of used parallel algorithm efficiency was effectuated using up to 896 cores. The experimental part of the study has been performed at the Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics SB RAS in a supersonic wind tunnel T-325. The measurements in experiments have been carried out with the help of a thermoanemometer. For M = 2, the sounding was carried out at unit Reynolds numbers of 4 and 11 million per meter, for M = 3, the unit Reynolds number was 9, 15 and 18 million per meter, for M = 4 - 17.5 million per meter. Detailed numerical and experimental data has been obtained on the position and dimensions of the vortex core with quantitative data on the distribution of gas-dynamic characteristics of the flow. Numerical data were obtained in wide distance up to 30 chords downstream from a wing axis. Comparisons of numerical and experimental data are carried out.

The first strategy called “partitioned approach” implies that hydrodynamical subproblem and mechanical one are solved separately, step-by-step. However, this method has limited range of applicability. In the second strategy called “monolithic approach” these two subproblems are solved together. The study shows advantages of high-order discontinuous Galerkin method in terms of accuracy for vortex flows. For this sake a test for 2D vortex evolution in non-viscid flow has been performed. It gives estimates of numerical scheme viscosity for different meshes and order of schemes. The main task to be solved is a generation of vortex past the wing at a small angle of attack, which is installed in wind tunnel.

The results of simulations of the oscillations of an elastic rod placed normally to the external air flow and rigidly fixed on a substrate are presented. The computations were carried out in ANSYS using the technology of two-way fluid-structure interaction (2FSI). Calculations of the problem were performed for various flow velocities, geometric parameters and properties of the rod material. The frequencies, amplitudes and shapes of vortex induced vibration were studied including those that are close to the lock-in mode.

Boundary layer separation is detrimental to the lift and drag of most aeronautical applications. Many vortex generators (VG), both passive and active have been designed to reduce these drawbacks. This study targets to investigate the effectiveness of hybrid micro-VGs, which combine both active and passive micro-VGs in controlling separation under subsonic conditions. NACA 4415 airfoils installed with passive, active and hybrid micro-VGs each are designed, 3D printed, and tested in a wind tunnel at 26.19 m/s under Re = 2.5x105. The lift and drag measurements from a 3-component force balance prove that hybrid micro-VGs increase lift by up to 21.2%, increase drag by more than 11.3% and improve lift-to-drag ratio by at least 8.6% until up to 33.7%. From this research, it is believed that hybrid micro-VGs are competitive to the performance of active VGs and a better configuration is to be considered to reduce parasitic drag and outstand active VGs.

The flow structure inside the Ranque vortex tube is investigated by LDA method. The mean velocity field is presented in the working channel of square cross-section at overpressures of 0.1 and 0.3 MPa. Two-dimensional mean velocity pattern is analyzed for the center longitudinal plane, and all the three velocity components all over the transverse coordinate are shown in three cross-sections of the working channel: near the guiding apparatus, in the center and near the hot exit

The results of experimental study of the flow in the wing wake at Mach number of 3 are presented. These experiments extends the data obtained in the same experimental setup at Mach numbers of 2.5 and 4 [1]. Experiments were carried out in supersonic wind tunnel T–325 of ITAM SB RAS. Rectangular half-wing with sharp edges with a chord length of 30 mm and semispan of 95 mm was used to generate vortex wake. Experimental data were obtained in two cross sections located 1.5 and 6 chord length downstream of the trailing edge at wing angle of attack of 10 degrees. Constant temperature hot-wire anemometer was used to measure disturbances in supersonic flow. Hot-wire aemometer was made of a tungsten wire with a diameter of 10 µm and length of 1.5 mm. Shlieren flow visualization were performed. As a result, the position and size of the vortex core in the wake of a rectangular wing were determined. For the first time mass flow distribution and its pulsations in the supersonic longitudinal vortex was measured at Mach number of 3.

We study the motion of a counter-rotating vortex pair with the circulations ±Γ move in incompressible fluid. The assumption is made that the core is very thin, that is the core radius σ is much smaller than the vortex radius d such that e = σ/d ≪ 1. With this condition, the method of matched asymptotic expansion is employed. The solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations and the Biot-Savart law, regarding the inner and outer solutions respectively, are constructed in the form of a small parameter. An asymptotic expansion of the Biot-Savart law near the vortex core provides with the matching condition for an asymptotic expansion for limiting the Navier-Stokes equations for large radius r. The general formula of an anti-parallel vortex pair is established. At leading order O(e0), we apply the special case in inviscid fluid, the Rankine vortex, a circular vortex of uniform vorticity. Furthermore at leading order O(e5) we show the traveling speed of a vortex pair.

This study shows an experimental result of effects of concave rectangular winglet vortex generator on convection heat transfer coefficient. There are two types of vortex generator those are rectangular winglet and concave rectangular winglet. The aim of this study is to observe effects of geometry and numbers of vortex generator to the increase of heat transfer coefficient. This experiment was done in a glass rectangular channel. Overall, this experiment was conducted with (rectangular and concave rectangular winglets) and without (baseline) vortex generator. Both types of vortex generator were placed at a 30° angle of attack, in an inline position, and variation numbers of vortex generator row of 1, 2 and 3 rows. Vortex generators were mounted on an aluminum plate which was mounted on a heater with 35 watts of heat, inside the rectangular channel. The problem of heat damage in high temperature mine has been attached more and more concern to. In addition, the existing solutions also have problems which are large initial investment and poor safety performance. Vortex tube type of mine cooling jacket, studied in this paper, using vortex tube refrigeration principle. It used compressed exhaust gas as the gas source, which can solve the problem of the large-scale cooling equipment which rely on electricity, and may not emit toxic gases at the same time. Thereby, by using the method of observation and questionnaire survey, the parameters of the vortex tube were optimized for optimal cooling effect. In conclusion, the features of security, reliability, energy saving and environmental protection can be realized by the vortex tube type of cooling jacket. What’s more important, we had investigated the feasibility of the application of vortex tube type of mine cooling jacket.

We present a model of center vortices, represented by closed random lines in continuous 2+1- dimensional space- time. These random lines are modeled as being piece-wise linear and an ensemble is generated by Monte Carlo methods. The physical space in which the vortex lines are defined is a cuboid with periodic boundary conditions. Besides moving, growing and shrinking of the vortex configuration, also reconnections are allowed. Our ensemble therefore contains not a fixed, but a variable number of closed vortex lines. This is expected to be important for realizing the deconfining phase transition. Using the model, we study both vortex percolation and the potential V (R) between quark and anti-quark as a function of distance R at different vortex densities, vortex segment lengths, reconnection conditions and at different temperatures. We have found three deconfinement phase transitions, as a function of density, as a function of vortex segment length, and as a function of temperature. The process of vortex cascade through continuous reduction of topological complexity by stepwise unlinking, that has been observed experimentally in the production of vortex knots (Kleckner & Irvine, 2013), is shown to be reproduced in the branching of the skein relations of knot polynomials (Liu & Ricca, 2015) used to identify topological complexity of vortex systems. This observation can be usefully exploited for predictions of energy-complexity estimates for fluid flows.

A numerical simulation for oscillating sub-boundary layer vortex generator (SBVG) with Co-rotating (Co) and Counter-Rotating (Co-R) configurations was carried out. A two-element high-lift configuration with oscillating SBVG attached at the leading edge of the flap was simulated based on the Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with SST k-ω turbulent model were used to predict the flow field which employed hybrid mesh. Three different reduced frequencies with Reynolds numbers of 8.4×105 were studied. The effect of oscillating SBVG motion in the range of 180 and −180 on aerodynamic coefficients was investigated. The results show that the vortex formation on the flap surface was almost invisible when the reduced frequency was increased. The oscillating SBVGs produce higher lift coefficient and drag coefficient, however the lift-to-drag ratio almost the same as the static SBVG.

A kinetic equation for a two-dimensional double-species point vortex system is obtained. The obtained collision term consisting of a diffusion term and a drift term has several physically good properties, for example, conserving a mean field energy and satisfying H theorem. It should be emphasized that the drift term plays an essential role for self-organization in a point vortex system with negative temperature.

Vortex reconnections plays an important role in the turbulent flows associated with the superfluids. To understand the dynamics, we examine the reconnections of vortex rings in the superfluids of dilute atomic gases confined in trapping potentials using Gross-Petaevskii equation. The axisymmetric Taylor-vortex flow of a rarefied gas between two coaxial circular cylinders, a rotating inner cylinder and a resting outer one, is investigated numerically for small Knudsen numbers on the basis of the compressible Navier-Stokes (CNS) equations and their appropriate slip boundary conditions. The accuracy of the result as an approximate solution to the Boltzmann equation is confirmed by comparing it with the result obtained by the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method for Knudsen numbers of the order of 10−2. The flow field for smaller Knudsen numbers (of the order of 10−3) exhibits a boundary-layer like structure near the cylinders. It is shown that, compared with the cylindrical Couette flow, the velocity slip in the circumferential direction is enhanced in the Taylor-vortex flow.

The single‐phase flow field in a hydrocyclone was studied numerically using the LES turbulence model. The hydrocyclone geometry and flow conditions are in accordance with previous experimental work. An important phenomenon in cyclone operation, the “end of the vortex,” observed in experiments was reproduced in the simulations, where the vortex end deviated from the vortex axis and bent to the wall of the hydrocyclone body. As the vortex end attached to the wall, its rotation (precession) was visualized by monitoring the motion of the low‐pressure spot caused by the vortex core on the wall.

We present an experimental and numerical study of post-shock evolution of gas initially seeded with small droplets or particles. In two-phase media with gas being the embedding phase occupying most of the volume, shock acceleration can lead to vortex formation. The physical mechanism responsible for the vorticity deposition in this case is different from that of Richtmyer-Meshkov instability that would emerge on a gas-gas density interface. After the shock passage, the particles or droplets lag behind the surrounding gas. Momentum exchange between the embedded phase and the embedding phase leads to non-uniform local equilibrium velocity distribution, and thus to shear and vortex formation. Here we investigate shock interaction with a cylindrical particle-seeded column (with and without reshock).

The vortex development of low‐density polyethylene Lupolen 1840H polymer melt under various processing conditions has been investigated by flow induced stress birefringence technique. It has been revealed that effect of mass flow rate and temperature on the vortex size has non‐monotonic character, which is in good agreement with laser‐Doppler velocimetry based measurements reported for the same polymer in the open literature. This suggests that the flow induced stress birefringence technique can be considered as the quick and reasonably precise tool for vortices shape/size visualization and quantification at the slit die entry region.

Elementary processes of two‐dimensional (2D) turbulence has been examined by extensive analyses of fine‐scale structures in the density distribution of a magnetized pure electron plasma that evolves from an unstable initial state to a single‐peaked stable distribution through successive mergers of vortex patches. The observed vortex dynamics in the real space corresponds to the spectral dynamics analyzed in the wave‐number (k) space. Along with the merging process among patches, the energy spectrum E(k) broadens upward and its shape shows a power‐law scaling k−α with α>3 in a wide wave‐number region above kin j corresponding to the size of the first generated patches. From the energy and enstrophy tranfer rate evaluated from the time‐resolved spectra, it has been observed that the enstrophy cascades at a constant transfer rate in the region k>3kin j, while the energy is transferred downward at k 3 in a wide wave‐number region above kin j corresponding to the size of the first generated patches. International audience; We consider the existence, stability and dynamical evolution of dark vortex states in the two‐dimensional defocusing DNLS equation, a model of interest both to atomic physics and to nonlinear optics. Our considerations are chiefly based on initializing such vortex configurations at the anti‐continuum limit of zero coupling between adjacent sites, and continuing them to finite values of the coupling. Discrete defocusing vortices become unstable past a critical coupling strength and, subsequently feature a cascade of alternating stabilization‐destabilization windows for any finite lattice.

In-flight collection of air, pre-cooling, liquefaction and separation of liquid oxygen (LOX) are key technologies for futuristic launch vehicles, Vortex tube technology is one of the few potential technologies for this application. Extensive studies have been carried out on straight and conical vortex tubes for developing vortex tube technology for high purity LOX separation. Studies show that 12mm. diameter conical vortex tube with L/D of 10 could achieve LOX purity of similar to 96% with separation efficiency of similar to 14% indicating that it is not possible to obtain both high LOX purity and high separation efficiency simultaneously in a single vortex tube. However, it is possible to achieve both high LOX purity and separation efficiency by staging of vortex tubes. LOX purity of 96% and separation efficiency of similar to 73.5% has been achieved for second stage vortex tube supplied with pre-cooled air having 60% oxygen purity. LOX purity has been further increased to 97% by applying controlled heating power over liquid oxygen flowing discharge surface of the vortex tube.

We have studied the temperature dependencies of the complex sheet conductance of 1-3 unit cell (UC) thick YBa2Cu3O7-x films sandwiched between semiconducting Pr0.6Y0.4Ba2Cu3O7-x layers at high frequencies. Experiments have been carried out in a frequency range between: 2 - 30 MHz with one-spiral coil technique, 100 MHz - 1 GHz frequency range with a new technique using the spiral coil cavity and at 30 GHz by aid of a resonant cavity technique. The real and imaginary parts of the mutual-inductance between a coil and a film were measured and converted to complex conductivity by aid of the inversion procedure. We have found a quadratic temperature dependence of the kinetic inductance, L_k^-1(T), at low temperatures independent of frequency, with a break in slope at T^dc_BKT, the maximum of real part of conductance and a large shift of the break temperature and the maximum position to higher temperatures with increasing frequency. We obtain from these data the universal ratio T^dc_BKT/L_k^-1(T^dc_BKT) = 25, 25, and 17 nHK for 1-, 2- and 3UC films, respectively in close agreement with theoretical prediction of 12 nHK for vortex-antivortex unbinding transition. The activated temperature dependence of the vortex diffusion constant was observed and discussed in the framework of vortex-antivortex pair pinning. We point out an intriguing possibility that there exist topological soliton-like excitations in nuclei with $\alpha$ cluster condensation. The excitations are vortices in superfluid, a property possessed by such Bose condensed nuclei. We show that the vortex-like states possess quantum numbers $J^{P}=n^{(-1)^n}$ and energies $\sim $ several MeV, measured from the ground state energies of the $n \alpha$ condensed states. We point out actual candidates, for instance, $2^{+}(3 {MeV})$ for $^{8}$Be, $3^{-}(9.6 {MeV})$ for $^{12}$C, etc, although the topological nature as a vortex is obscure in such light nuclei., Comment: 6 pages, no figures

We report transverse-field muon spin rotation studies of the magnetic field distribution n(B) in the vortex state of the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+δ (Bi-2212) and present data on three sets of overdoped, nearly optimized and underdoped single crystals which to our best knowledge provide the first evidence that a two-stage melting transition of the vortex matter occurs under equilibrium conditions. In addition, we compare the TF-μSR results with those from DC-magnetization measurements and magneto-optic experiments on the same crystals.

If cold dark matter elementary particles form a Bose‐Einstein condensate, their superfluidity may distinguish them from other forms of cold dark matter, including the creation of quantum vortices. We have shown that such vortices are favored in strongly‐coupled condensates. Vortex creation causes central densities to drop, thus affecting the dynamics of the gaseous baryonic component and subsequently star formation.

We report on a numerical simulation of morning transition in the atmospheric boundary layer above the river Yenisey near the city of Krasnoyarsk. The effect of meandering river promotes complex air circulation patterns leading to the formation of large-scale vertical vortex pair. The current LES results supports previous RANS simulations indicating the vortices positions at the minimum curvature points of the meander. The vortices affect the humidity distribution leading to uneven spreading of the water vapour along the river banks. The convective vortex pairs (rolls) are attracted toward the river during the morning ground heating. The vorticity which is transferred with these pairs is feeding the main vertical vortex. This feeding process is responsible for the large vortex stability.

The article presents numerical modeling of meteorological processes in the wind farm of the Republic of Adygea. The wind farm has 60 wind turbines, the capacity of each wind turbine is 2.5 MW. A test configuration with 4 nested domains was developed to study the wind farm. The computations were carried out using the WRF-ARW computational code with the wind turbine parameterization module. The calculation was performed for the period 01.04.2020 00:00 – 01.05.2020 00:00 UTC. As a result, the dimensions of the wake formed by the wind farm were obtained, and the influence of the parameterization of wind turbines on the wind distribution calculation was shown. The potential vortex wake can reach sizes up to 15 km. The losses of generated power can reach 1 MW inside the vortex wake. The computations were run on high performance cluster UNIHUB of ISP RAS.

The study presents the results of numerical studies of mixing, ignition, and combustion of a jet of cold hydrogen along the bottom wall of the channel parallel to the supersonic free stream (M = 2) of an inert gas / vitiated air. The calculations were carried out using the commercial package ANSYS CFD Fluent based on the solution of unsteady Favre-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, supplemented by the k-ω SST turbulence model, models of turbulence-chemistry interaction (TCI), and several kinetic schemes of hydrogen combustion. Two detailed kinetics, including 16 and 37 reactions, are considered. The work used two models of turbulence-chemistry interaction: the vortex dissipation model (EDM) and its extended version eddy dissipation concept (EDC). This work aims to select the calculation method, the kinetic mechanism, and the TCI model, which provide good agreement with the experimental data. It is shown that, in the case of a non-reactive flow, the computational algorithm makes it possible to accurately predict the mixing parameters of a hydrogen jet and an external inert gas flow. For a reacting flow, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, which develops at the boundary of the combustion layer with the external flow, significantly affects the flow characteristics.
