Over the last five years, there has been substantial international interest in a high luminosity (approx. 1033cm-2s-1) polarized electron-ion collider covering a CM energy range from about 30 to 100 GeV. Workshops have taken place in Europe in 1997 and in the United States at IUCF (1999), BNL (1999), Yale (2000) and MIT (2000). An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) collaboration was formed in the fall of 2000, and in the United States, the 2001 Long Range Plan favorably endorsed the science of EIC and urged R&D support as a high priority. In March 2002, a series of workshops at BNL involving over 150 physicists from around the world agreed to produce a conceptual design of an electron-ion collider within three years. Further, it was agreed to develop this design around the existing Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at BNL. This design is known as eRHIC. This report reviews the recent experimental results from the CLAS collaboration (Hall B of Jefferson Lab, or JLab) on Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) and Deeply Virtual Meson Production (DVMP) and discusses their interpretation in the framework of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). The impact of the experimental data on the applicability of the GPD mechanism to these exclusive reactions is discussed. Initial results obtained from JLab 6 GeV data indicate that DVCS might already be interpretable in this framework while GPD models fail to describe the exclusive meson production (DVMP) data with the GPD parameterizations presently used. An exception is the [lowercase_phi_synonym] meson production for which the GPD mechanism appears to apply. The recent global analyses aiming to extract GPDs from fitting DVCS CLAS and world data are discussed. The GPD experimental program at CLAS12, planned with the upcoming 12 GeV upgrade of JLab, is briefly presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the dynamical origin of the P11 nucleon resonances resulting from a dynamical coupled-channels (DCC) analysis of meson production reactions off a nucleon target, which is conducted at Excited Baryon Analysis Center (EBAC) of Jefferson Lab. Two resonance poles are found in the energy region where the Roper resonance P11 (1440) was identified. Furthermore, the two resonance poles and the next higher resonance pole corresponding to P11 (1710) are found to originate from a single bare state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The U.S. Nuclear Science Advisory Committee has developed a new Long Range Plan to guide the program over the next decade. The long term human exploration goals that NASA has embraced, requires the need to understand the primary radiation and secondary particle production under a variety of environmental conditions. In order to perform accurate transport simulations for the incident particles found in the space environment, accurate nucleus-nucleus inelastic event generators are needed, and NASA is funding their development. For the first time, NASA is including the radiation problem into the . design of the next manned exploration vehicle. The NASA-funded FLUER-S (FLUKA Executing Under ROOT-Space) project has several goals beyond the improvement of the internal nuclear physics simulations. These include making FLUKA more user-friendly. Several tools have been developed to simplify the use of FLUKA without compromising its accuracy or versatility. Among these tools are a general source input, ability of distributive computing, simplification of geometry input, geometry and event visualization, and standard FLUKA scoring output analysis using a ROOT GUI. In addition to describing these tools we will show how they have been used for space radiation environment data analysis in MARIE, IVCPDS, and EVCPDS. Similar analyses can be performed for future radiation measurement detectors before they are deployed in order to optimize their design. These tools can also be used in the design of nuclear-based power systems on manned exploration vehicles and planetary surfaces. The neutron-induced fission cross-section ratios relative to 235U has been measured for 240Pu, 243Am and natW in a wide energy range of incident neutrons from 1 MeV to 200 MeV at the GNEIS facility. The measurements were performed using the multiplate ionization chambers and time-of-flight techniques. GEANIE is an array of 26 HpGe detectors used to study nuclear reaction dynamics and structure following reactions with high-energy (1 < E[sub n] < 200 MeV) neutrons, for both basic and applied research projects. Studies have included the measurement of (n,xn) partial cross sections as a function of E[sub n] for a variety of nuclei, particularly actinides. More recently, studies of n-induced fission-fragment distributions and nuclear structure in the actinide region have been started. A second beam line and experimental station (FIGARO) have been set up to complement and extend this program. Research conducted on this second beam line includes the use of conversion electron spectroscopy to explore nuclear structure, using the University of Pittsburgh ICEBall II array. The reactions 16O(e,e’p) 15N, 208Pb(e,e’p) 207Tl and 12C(e,e’p) 11B were measured in experiments E00–102 and E06–007 performed at JLab (VA, USA) at true quasielastic kinematics (xB = 1) with constant energy (ω) and momentum (q) transferred over a wide pmiss range. These experiments address several open issues in nuclear structure such as the role of relativity and of long-range correlations in the description of nuclei as well as a possible dependence of the spectroscopic factors on Q2. Preliminary experimental results and theoretical predictions from a fully relativistic DWIA model carefully averaged over the experimental acceptances are shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
