The giant magnetostrictive transducer is a transducer device that realizes magneto-mechanical energy conversion. Each mechanical component is connected by the joint surface to realize the transmission of ultrasonic vibration energy. To ensure the efficient transmission of energy, the influence of the contact characteristics of the joint surface on the output stability of the transducer is studied. According to the contact conditions between the mechanical joint surfaces of the giant magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer (GMUT), the key factors affecting the mechanical vibration performance of the ultrasonic system are obtained by analyzing the vibration transmission characteristics of the joint surfaces. The influence of different joint surface contact characteristics (JSCT) on the amplitude–frequency curve of the transducer is analyzed by the ANSYS software. Simulations and experiments have been conducted to verify the predicted results. As the preload force increases, the natural frequency of the transducer increases, but the growth rate decreases. The natural frequency of the double-rod GMUT with a small joint surface area is slightly higher in the optimal output mode shape, while its amplitude is significantly larger. The optimal prestress for the GMUT with different-sized joint surfaces is 3–5 MPa. This paper acquires the JSCT under a high-frequency vibration condition, reveals the influence of the joint surface on the mechanical output performance of the GMUT, and can provide a theoretical basis for the design and analysis of the rotary ultrasonic vibration processing system. Preparing Fe–Ga sheets with excellent magnetostrictive coefficients by rolling and annealing methods can greatly promote the development of high-efficiency magnetostrictive devices. 0.3 mm thick Fe–Ga thin sheet was produced by the one-stage large-reduction cold rolling method without intermediate annealing. Trace V and Nb elements addition improves the rolling formability of the Fe–Ga sheet by precipitating a large number of (Nb,V)C particles. The evolution of precipitation, microstructure, texture, and magnetostrictive coefficients in the Fe–Ga sheet was investigated. The microstructure of primary recrystallization is composed of homogenous distribution of fine grains with an average grain size of about 22 μm. The composite inhibitors composed of MnS and (Nb,V)C precipitates with a particle size of 40∼80 nm suppress the matrix grains effectively. The primary recrystallization texture consists of a strong γ texture with a peak at {111}<112> and a relatively strong {114}<481> texture. The secondary recrystallization of Goss grain occurs at the annealing temperature of 900 °C and is completed at 1100 °C by the combined effects of the existing inhibitor and texture. The Fe–Ga thin sheets composed of several millimeter-sized grains of Goss texture accompanied by small grains oriented by {114}<481> were obtained after annealing at 1100 °C, and its measured magnetostriction value is about 238 ppm. A comprehensive model is a basis for adequately understanding the energy conversion mechanism of magnetostrictive materials and guides the design of magnetostrictive devices. This paper established a fully coupled model that fully considered the piezomagnetic effect and the electromagnetic effect in its procedure of energy conversion. The proposed model can accurately predict the output voltage with different excitation levels and illustrate the interaction between physical fields. Based on the established model, we quantify the voltage contributed by the piezomagnetic effect and the electromagnetic effect. After a thorough analysis, we discovered that even though the voltage generation is always dominated by the piezomagnetic effect of the magnetostrictive material, the proportion from the electromagnetic effect will increase moderately with larger excitation levels. In addition, the magnetostrictive effect toward the output performance is also discussed, which proved to lead to a marginal impact on the voltage waveform. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of variable compressive stress on hysteresis, eddy-current, and anomalous losses in magnetostrictive materials is investigated by the built magnetic characteristic testing system. Based on experimental results of Terfenol-D and loss separation theory, the trends of loss coefficients of three variables, magnetic frequency f, peak flux magnetic density Bm, and compressive stress σ, are analyzed. The reasons for the change in losses are explained from the point of view of micro-magnetism and physical mechanism. A variable coefficient magnetic energy loss calculating model considering compressive stress is derived using the algorithm of Levenberg–Marquardt and the method of multivariate parametric regression. The experimental and computed results of magnetic energy losses are compared and analyzed under different operating conditions. The analysis results show that the proposed model could well predict the losses under compressive stress at high-frequencies (5–20 kHz). The average error of the computed and experimental results is 5.5%. This paper presents a quasi-3D electromagnetic analysis of the multi-pole magnetization BLDC motor. The permanent magnet (PM) of a multi-pole magnetization BLDC motor has several poles in a magnet. The polar separation section of the multi-pole PM is implemented through the magnetization pattern function. The analysis model of this study, as the outer rotor type, has two 3D structures: the PM overhang and housing-integrated rotor core. Because the 3D analysis is time consuming, 3D structures are corrected to 2D analysis model. The PM overhang is corrected by considering the magnitude of magnetic energy, and the housing-integrated rotor core is corrected by considering the radial direction flux of the rotor core. Structural parameters of giant magnetostrictive actuator (GMA) have a greater impact on its output characteristics and how to design them is related to give full play to the material characteristics. On the basis of analyzing working principle of GMA, this paper respectively designs and optimizes the structural parameters of exciting coil, magnetic circuit, preload device and temperature control system. The initial best working conditions are achieved by research on static experiments. Aiming to design magnetostrictive/piezoelectric asymmetric bilayer laminate structure that is commonly used in magnetoelectric (ME) sensor, a bilayer static nonlinear magneto-mechanical- electro-thermal coupled theoretical model which is about calculating ME coefficient and sensitivity is established. This model is based on the mechanical-electric linear constitutive relation of piezoelectric layer and one-dimension nonlinear thermal-magneto-mechanical constitutive relation of giant magnetostrictive material (GMM), in which the bending deformation caused by asymmetric structure has also been considered. The model shows universal applicability in the magnetostrictive/piezoelectric bilayer ME structure. In order to verify the validity of the model, magnetostrictive Terfenol-D and piezoelectric PZT are selected to constitute bilayer asymmetric ME composite structure sample, whose static ME coefficient is measured under different temperatures and bias magnetic fields. The model is degenerated to the ME coefficient model without stress, which shows a good predicted result being qualitatively and quantitatively consistent with experimental result confirming the validity of the model. Therefore, the nonlinear effects of pre-stress, bias magnetic field and environmental temperature, thickness ratio, as well as different piezoelectric materials on the ME coefficient and sensitivity were systematically investigated with our established model. The predicted result provides a roadway to improve static ME coefficient and sensitivity of devices by selecting different physic fields, materials, and thickness ratio for designing future ME sensors. It is well known that accurate modeling of magnetostrictive hysteresis is crucial to different industrial applications. Although several magnetostrictive models have been developed in the past, the accuracy-efficiency balance has always been crucial. Recently, the possibility of constructing a primitive vector hysteresis operator using a tri-node Hopfield Neural Network (HNN) was demonstrated. Based upon the fact that mechanical stress along a certain direction results in dimensional deformation, this paper introduces a novel extension to the aforementioned recently developed approach. More specifically, a stress-driven evolution of a tri-node HNN hysteresis operator pair is proposed, thus yielding a tripod-like HNN pair having different input offset values. This paper presents the design and fabrication of a rotary-impact magnetostrictive energy generator, used to harvest the rotation of human knee joint. The harvester consists of twelve movable Terfenol-D rods, surrounded by the picked up coils respectively, and alternate permanent magnet (PM) array sandwiched in each part of the shell. Rotational electromagnetic power generating effect and impacted magnetostrictive power generating effect are designed in the harvester. Modeling and simulation are used to validate the concept. Then, magnetic field and leakage of the harvester are analyzed, electromagnetic force in the harvester is simulated. A prototype of harvester is fabricated, and subjected to the experimental characterization. It can be concluded that huge induced voltage generated in the short-time impact situation and that induced voltage in the harvester can reach up to 60-80 volts at 0.91Hz low frequency rotation. Also, the presented harvester has good harvesting effects at low frequency human walking and periodic swing crus situation, which are suitable to be used for future researches of wearable knee joint applications. This work aims to give a comprehensive view of magnetic state stability and transformations in PZT-film/FeGa-dot multiferroic composite systems due to the combining effects of size, shape and interfacial coupling strain. It is found that the stable magnetic state of the FeGa nanodots is not only a function of the size and shape of the nanodot but also strongly sensitive to the interfacial coupling strain modified by the polarization state of PZT film. In particular, due to the large magnetostriction of FeGa, the phase boundaries between different magnetic states (i.e., in-plane/out-of-plane polar states, and single-/multi-vortex states) of FeGa nanodots can be effectively tuned by the polarization-mediated strain. Fruitful strain-mediated transformation paths of magnetic states including those between states with different orderings (i.e., one is polar and the other is vortex), as well as those between states with the same ordering (i.e., both are polar or both are vortex) have been revealed in a comprehensive view. Our result sheds light on the potential of utilizing electric field to induce fruitful magnetic state transformation paths in multiferroic film-dot systems towards a development of novel magnetic random access memories. The output characteristic model of a magnetostrictive cantilever-like tactile sensor has been founded based on the inverse-magnetostrictive effect, the flexure mode, and the Jiles-Atherton model. The magnetostrictive sensor has been designed and an output voltage is analyzed under the conditions of bias magnetic field, contact pressure and deflection of cantilever beam. The experiment has been performed to determine the relation among the induced output voltage, bias magnetic field, and pressure. It is found that the peak of the induced output voltage increases with an increasing pressure under the bias magnetic field of 4.8kA/m. The experimental result agrees well with the theoretical one and it means that the model can describe the relation among the induced output voltage, bias magnetic field, and pressure. The vibration of reactors not only produces noise pollution, but also affects the safe operation of reactors. Giant magnetostrictive materials can generate huge expansion and shrinkage deformation in a magnetic field. With the principle of mutual offset between the giant magnetostrictive force produced by the giant magnetostrictive material and the original vibration force of the reactor, the vibration of the reactor can be reduced. In this paper, magnetization and magnetostriction characteristics in silicon steel and the giant magnetostrictive material are measured, respectively. According to the presented magneto-mechanical coupling model including the electromagnetic force and the magnetostrictive force, reactor vibration is calculated. By comparing the vibration of the reactor with different inserted materials in the air gaps between the reactor cores, the vibration reduction effectiveness of the giant magnetostrictive material is validated. Fe-Ga (Galfenol) and Fe-Al (Alfenol) are rare-earth-free magnetostrictive alloys with mechanical robustness and strong magnetoelastic coupling. Since highly textured Galfenol and Alfenol thin sheets along <100> orientations have been developed with magnetostrictive performances of ~270 ppm and ~160 ppm, respectively, they have been of great interest in sensor and energy harvesting applications. In this work, we investigate stress-dependent magnetostrictive behaviors in highly textured rolled sheets of NbC-added Fe80Al20 and Fe81Ga19 alloys with a single (011) grain coverage of ~90%. A compact fixture was designed and used to introduce a uniform compressive pre-stress to those thin sheet samples along a [100] direction. As compressive pre-stress was increased to above 100 MPa, the maximum observed magnetostriction increased 42% in parallel magnetostriction along the stress direction, ʎ==, in highly textured (011) Fe81Ga19 thin sheets for a compressive pre-stress of 60 MPa. The same phenomena were observed for (011) Fe80Al20 (maximum increase of 88% with a 49MPa compressive stress). This trend is shown to be consistent with published results on the effect of pre-stress on magnetostriction in rods of single crystal and textured polycrystalline Fe-Ga alloy of similar compositions, and single crystal data gathered using our experimental set up. Interestingly, the saturating field (Hs) does not vary with pre-stresses, while the saturating field in rod-shaped samples of Fe-Ga increases with an increase of pre-stress. This suggests that for a range of compressive pre-stresses, thin sheet samples have larger values of d33 transduction coefficients and susceptibility than rod-shaped samples of similar alloy compositions, and hence they should provide performance benefits when used in sensor and actuator device applications. Thus, we discuss potential reasons for the unexpected trends in Hs with pre-stress, and present preliminary results from tests conducted to determine the potential role of shape anisotropy in this observation. In this paper, we present a magnetostrictive phased array sensor (MPAS) with a polycrystalline nickel patch of a circular comb shape in order for the use of the ultrasonic guided Lamb wave inspection technique. The MPAS was comprised of two main components of the surface-mounted nickel patch and a mobile magnetic circuit device enclosing six sensing coils and center-positioned cylindrical biasing magnets. The magnetic circuit device detects the magnetic property change induced by the elastic wave propagation through the magnetostrictive nickel patch bonded to a thin aluminum plate. The individual sensing coils were configured to have directional preferences specified along the perpendicular direction of the coil winding, and they were arranged in a hexagon with a radius of 0.5" to form a compactsized phased array sensor. Although the magnetic circuit device contains only six physical sensing coils, the MPAS enables to increase the total numbers of sensing positions by altering the orientation of the magnetic circuit device. The enhanced directional sensing capability of the presented MPAS was achieved as a result of the combined effect on the high magnetic shape anisotropy feature along the individual comb finger directions of the nickel patch and the directional sensitivity of the hexagon magnetic circuit device itself. Abnormal grain growth (AGG) is a highly promising process for solid state conversion of polycrystals into single crystals in ceramic and in-metallic materials. In this paperwe investigateAGGbehaviors in NbC-added Fe-Ga rolled sheets with varying thicknesses for converting polycrystalline ingots of Fe-Ga alloy into single-crystal-like rolled sheet for application as the transduction components in low-cost magnetostrictive devices. Magnetostriction values of greater than 200 ppm resulted from AGG of a large single Goss grain, (011)[100], in 0.35-mm to 0.60-mm thick sheet samples annealed at 1200°C. Samples thinner than 0.35mmor thicker than 0.60mmdeveloped (113)[uvw]-oriented grain growth or random orientations with low magnetostriction values. In order to understand how thickness influences grain growth behaviors, a total interface energy model has been developed that combines both grain boundary and surface energies. We investigated the hypothesis that surface energy differences between grains in conjunction with grain boundary energy act as the driving force underlying the ability to selectively develop AGG and even to promote single-crystallike grain growth. Results obtained from modeling simulation demonstrate that the extent of the matrix consumed withAGGwas determined by controlling surface energy which plays a major role in acceleratingAGGbeyond what is achieved with the effects of just grain boundary energy. In this work, we propose a novel wireless actuator which is composed of magnetostrictive material/copper bi-layer film. The actuator can be controlled to move like a snake bi-directionally along a pipe by tuning the frequency of external magnetic field near its first order resonant frequency. The governing equation for the actuator is established and the vibration mode shape function is derived. Theoretical analysis shows that motion of the actuator is achieved by asymmetric vibration mode shape, specific vibration bending deformation, and effective net total impacting force. The simulation and experimental results well confirm the theoretical analysis. This work provides contribution to the development of wireless micro robots and autonomous magnetostrictive sensors. For magnetostrictive rods under combined axial pre-stress and magnetic field, a general one-dimension nonlinear magneto-elastic coupled constitutive model was built in this paper. First, the elastic Gibbs free energy was expanded into polynomial, and the relationship between stress and strain and the relationship between magnetization and magnetic field with the polynomial form were obtained with the help of thermodynamic relations. Then according to microscopic magneto-elastic coupling mechanism and some physical facts of magnetostrictive materials, a nonlinear magneto-elastic constitutive with concise form was obtained when the relations of nonlinear strain and magnetization in the polynomial constitutive were instead with transcendental functions. The comparisons between the prediction and the experimental data of different magnetostrictive materials, such as Terfenol-D, Metglas and Ni showed that the predicted magnetostrictive strain and magnetization curves were consistent with experimental results under different pre-stresses whether in the region of lowand moderate field or high field. Moreover, the model can fully reflect the nonlinear magnetomechanical coupling characteristics between magnetic, magnetostriction and elasticity, and it can effectively predict the changes of material parameters with pre-stress and bias field, which is useful in practical applications. In this letter, we report a method to measure changes in a fluid pressure, flowing through a flexible pipeline, by means of a ring of magnetic microwire concentric to the pipeline. The detection is based on the modulated scattering of electromagnetic waves by the magnetoelastic ring. This modulation is driven by applying a low frequency bias magnetic field able to tune the magnetic permeability of the ferromagnetic microwire. Pressure detection, by means of magnetic permeability changes, is possible due to the magnetostrictive character of the sample. The experimental work developed has, also, allowed fluid pressure detection in a hydraulic circuit connected to ventricular assist system where a fluid with a viscosity close to blood flows. Frequency dependence of magnetostrictive phenomenon of as-cast 2605SA1 ribbon was studied. We applied a sinusoidal sweeping field (H), with a fixed frequency (f), along length (L) of the ribbon, and simultaneously recorded the longitudinal magnetostriction (λ||) and the transverse magnetostriction (λ⊥) as a function of time (t), respectively. f was varied from 0.07 to 122 Hz. In the low-f case (f =0.07 Hz), we observed the frequency-doubling (FD) feature in λ||(t) and λ⊥(t) curves; i.e., only even harmonic magnetostrictive signals showed up. In the high-f case (f = 122 Hz), we observed the no-frequency-doubling (NFD) feature; i.e., both odd and even harmonic magnetostrictive signals showed up. A theory, based on the balance among various torques acting on magnetization, is developed to explain the f dependence of the magnetostriction phenomenon observed. From this theory, we conclude that only when the reflection symmetry of the system is reserved, i.e., when the equivalent easy axis (EEA) is perpendicular to L, will λ||(t) and λ⊥(t) have the true-frequency-doubling (TFD) feature. However, for the as-cast 2605SA1 ribbon, EEA is not perpendicular to L. Thus, strictly speaking, we should observe the NFD feature only. Nevertheless, in the low-f limit, we can show that the FD feature is somewhat allowed under the condition, b/&#945 being close to 1, where b and α are the two parameters used in the theory. From experimental data, this condition is met for as-cast 2605SA1. To make a distinction from TFD, this low-f feature is called close-frequency-doubling (CFD) in this paper. The existence of "blind point" lowers the mass sensitivity and reliability of magnetostrictive particle (MSP) based biosensors. In addition, asymmetric distribution of mass loading (e.g. bacteria) will cause the shift of "blind point" and change of mass sensitivity of an MSP based biosensor. In this work, a modal analysis method was introduced and conducted to derive the governing vibration equation for an MSP biosensor with asymmetric mass loading. The effects of asymmetric mass loading on the "blind point" shift and mass sensitivity were unveiled by solving the governing vibration equation. It was found that the plot of "blind point" shift showed an "M" shape with the valley located at a/l ~ 0.5 and two peaks located at a/l ~ 0.25 and a/l ~ 0.75. In addition, the theoretical results showed that the resonance frequency shift (Δf) depends on the value of a/l (i.e. both the attached mass and mass distribution) and their relationship is nonlinear. Based on the definition of mass sensitivity (Sm), the values of Sm were derived for the selected values of a/l. The results showed that Sm decreased initially with increasing a/l, reaching the minimum, and then increased until a/l = 1. That is, the maximum mass sensitivity is obtained when a/l equals to a critical value Xc (0 < Xc < l). The non-linear dynamic characteristics and optimal control of a giant magnetostrictive film (GMF) subjected to in-plane stochastic excitation were studied. Non-linear differential items were introduced to interpret the hysteretic phenomena of the GMF, and the non-linear dynamic model of the GMF subjected to in-plane stochastic excitation was developed. The stochastic stability was analysed, and the probability density function was obtained. The condition of stochastic Hopf bifurcation and noise-induced chaotic response were determined, and the fractal boundary of the system's safe basin was provided. The reliability function was solved from the backward Kolmogorov equation, and an optimal control strategy was proposed in the stochastic dynamic programming method. Numerical simulation shows that the system stability varies with the parameters, and stochastic Hopf bifurcation and chaos appear in the process; the area of the safe basin decreases when the noise intensifies, and the boundary of the safe basin becomes fractal; the system reliability improved through stochastic optimal control. This study addresses the theoretical and experimental investigations of grating-patterned magnetostrictive FeCo coated surface acoustic wave (SAW) device for sensing magnetic field. The proposed sensor is composed of a configuration of differential dual-delay-line oscillators, and a magnetostrictive FeCo grating array deposited along the SAW propagation path of the sensing device, which suppresses effectively the hysteresis effect by releasing the internal binding force in FeCo. The magnetostrictive strain and ΔE effect from the FeCo coating modulates the SAW propagation characteristic, and the corresponding shift in differential oscillation frequency was utilized to evaluate the measurant. A theoretical model is performed to investigate the wave propagation in layered structure of FeCo/LiNbO3 in the effect of magnetostrictive, and allowing determining the optimal structure. The experimental results indicate that higher sensitivity, excellent linearity, and lower hysteresis error over the typical FeCo thin-film coated sensor were achieved from the grating-patterned FeCo coated sensor successfully. There is a serious nonlinear relationship between input and output in the giant magnetostrictive actuator (GMA) and how to establish mathematical model and identify its parameters is very important to study characteristics and improve control accuracy. The current-displacement model is firstly built based on Jiles-Atherton (J-A) model theory, Ampere loop theorem and stress-magnetism coupling model. And then laws between unknown parameters and hysteresis loops are studied to determine the data-taking scope. The modified simulated annealing differential evolution algorithm (MSADEA) is proposed by taking full advantage of differential evolution algorithm’s fast convergence and simulated annealing algorithm’s jumping property to enhance the convergence speed and performance.
