The goal of the study was to investigate moderators of intervention effect of a guided Internet-based self-help cognitive behavioral intervention for people with HIV and depressive symptoms. This study was part of a randomized controlled trial where the intervention was found to be effective in reducing depressive symptoms, compared to an attention-only control group. Demographic characteristics (e.g., age), HIV characteristics (e.g., duration of HIV), and psychological characteristics (e.g., coping self-efficacy) were investigated as potential moderators of intervention effect. In 2015, 188 people with HIV and depressive symptoms were included in the study: 97 were randomized to the intervention group and 91 to the control group. Two moderators of intervention effect were found: coping self-efficacy and baseline depression severity. Participants with low coping self-efficacy and baseline depression severity improved more in the intervention group than in the control group, and participants with high coping self-efficacy and baseline depression severity improved in both groups. The results indicate that the intervention may be provided to all people with HIV and depressive symptoms. It may be especially important for people with HIV and low coping self-efficacy to start with the intervention since they show less improvement in the control group with only attention. With an annual incidence of about 1.5 million new infections, HIV is an ongoing public health concern. Sexual transmission risk behavior (STRB) is a main driver of the HIV epidemic in most Western countries, particularly among specific populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM). This quasi-experimental pilot study examined the effectiveness of a ten-session group intervention, aiming to reduce STRB among a high-risk subpopulation of MSM living with HIV. Self-reported STRB, impulsivity, mental health symptoms, and functional impairment were compared between the intervention group (n = 12) and a control group (n = 16). At baseline, participants in the intervention group had higher levels of STRB, impulsivity, mental health problems, and functional impairment, compared to the control group. A significant time-by-group interaction effect revealed that after the intervention, STRB, impulsivity, and functional impairment reduced in the intervention group to levels comparable to the control group. These findings suggest that a targeted behavioral intervention might be an effective strategy to reduce persistent STRB and related factors in MSM living with HIV. Young people perinatally infected with HIV (pHIV) are at risk of a lowered health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Previous evaluation of the NeurOlogical, VIsual and Cognitive performance in HIV-infected Children (NOVICE)-cohort showed no difference in HRQOL between pHIV and matched HIV-uninfected controls (HIV-), yet a higher percentage of pHIV had impaired HRQOL. The aim of this study is to compare the change over time in HRQOL of pHIV to HIV- over a 5-year period. We used the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL)™ 4.0 to repeat HRQOL assessment. High PedsQL scores indicate good HRQOL. Fifteen/33 (45.5%) pHIV and 17/37 (45.9%) HIV- completed both assessments. At the first assessment, the mean age was 13.1 years (range 8.0–18.4). PHIV scored higher than HIV- on Emotional functioning and on Total scale score. After five years, the mean age was 17.6 years (range 12.1–22.8). PHIV scored higher than HIV- on all scales, except Social functioning. PHIV did not differ significantly from the Dutch norm on either time-point. LMEM showed no difference in change over time for any of the PedsQL scales. In this study, young people with pHIV receiving high-quality health care, including monitoring of HRQOL, remain to experience a good HRQOL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
