Despite the increased use of geosocial networking applications for finding sexual partners among young men who have sex with men (YMSM), few studies have examined the intricate patterns of online dating behaviors. In order to advance understanding of online dating patterns among YMSM, various factors, including how frequently and how much time is spent within partner-seeking sites, need to be examined concurrently. Therefore, we used latent profile analysis to identify online dating patterns and logistic regressions to examine their associations with sexual behaviors and relationship characteristics among single YMSM (N = 180; ages 18–24). We found three online dating patterns: discouraged users (N = 93, 52%), date seekers (N = 67, 37%), and instant lovers (N = 20, 11%). Discouraged users were less likely to seek sexual sensational activities, while date seekers were more likely to seek sexual sensational activities. Moreover, instant lovers were less likely to pursue committed romantic relationships, while they reported a higher number of condomless anal intercourse. Given that online dating patterns are not homogeneous, HIV prevention interventions may benefit from tailored approaches based on YMSM's different online dating profiles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) is in advanced stages of clinical trials. Under the standard protocol, CAB-LA is injected into the gluteal muscle by a healthcare provider every eight weeks. To explore transgender women's barriers and facilitators to tailored delivery strategies—including self-injection and injection in "drop-in" centers—we completed in-depth interviews with N = 15 transgender women in New York City. Participants endorsed the alternative delivery methods and the corresponding features we proposed, and expressed likes and dislikes about each. These fell into the following categories: competence (e.g., the person delivering CAB-LA must have skills to do so), convenience (e.g., CAB-LA must be easy to obtain), and privacy or fear of judgement (e.g., participants did not want to feel judged for using CAB-LA by providers or other service consumers). Sexual empowerment is a key strategy in HIV prevention intervention design, yet its measurement has been conceptualized as homogeneous. To date, no studies have examined whether young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) exhibit heterogeneity across sexual empowerment. Using baseline data from a randomized controlled trial (N = 275, HIV-negative YBMSM), we classified YBMSM into sexual empowerment profiles based on five indicators using a latent profile analysis and assessed the associations between the sexual empowerment profiles and stigma-related experiences using multinomial logistic regression. Three profiles were identified: psychologically empowered with safer sex intentions (profile 1); psychologically disempowered with safer sex intentions (profile 2); and psychologically disempowered without safer sex intentions (profile 3). YBMSM reporting fewer stigma-related experiences were more likely to be profile 1 than profile 2 and profile 3. To empower YBMSM, interventions based on sexual empowerment profile targeting the psychological/behavioral aspects of empowerment and addressing stigma are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Policing gender and sexuality can have enduring health implications for the well-being of young men who have sex with men (YMSM). Using data from a community-based sample of YMSM in the Detroit Metro Area (N = 364), we examined the prevalence of lifetime heteronormative policing by gender (e.g., punished/restricted for femininity) and sexuality (e.g., attempts to alter same-sex attractions). We examined the associations of heteronormative policing attempts and the number of condomless insertive and receptive anal intercourse partners, respectively. We also tested whether internalized homophobia moderated the association between sexuality policing and sexual risk. Multivariable models demonstrated that policing sexuality, but not gender, was associated with a greater number of partners in which participants engaged in condomless intercourse as the receptive partner. We observed no interaction between policing sexuality and internalized homophobia. Multilevel efforts are needed to reduce the contribution of heteronormative policing on YMSM’s HIV risk. Sexual transmission risk occurs in the context of serodiscordant condomless anal intercourse (CAI) where the seropositive partner is virologically detectable (VL+) and/or seronegative partner is not on PrEP. We analyzed correlates of serodiscordant CAI among 688 VL+ young men who have sex with men (YMSM). In multivariable analyses, serodiscordant CAI was associated with a receiving a HIV diagnosis in the past 6 months, greater depressive symptoms, and cocaine use during the past 90 days. Although HIV+ YMSM currently experience disparities across the continuum of care, those new to care may need support adopting risk reduction strategies with their sexual partners. We examined young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men’s (YGBMSM) usage patterns of a pre-coital, applicator-administered rectal placebo gel. An ethnically diverse sample of 94 YGBMSM (aged 18–30 years) were asked to insert hydroxyethylcellulose placebo gel rectally before receptive anal intercourse (RAI) and report their gel use through an interactive voice response system (IVRS) across 12 weeks. We used trajectory analyses to characterize participants’ use of the rectal gel over the 12 weeks, and examine whether these trajectories varied based on participants’ sociodemographic characteristics, sexual behaviors, application and insertion behaviors, and experiences using the placebo gel. A cubic model was the best fit for these longitudinal data, with two distinct trajectories of gel use observed. The first trajectory (‘High with Varying Gel Use per Week’) represented YGBMSM (N = 38; 40.3%) who reported using the rectal gel on several occasions per week. The second trajectory (‘Low and Consistent Gel Use per Week’) represented participants (N = 56; 59.7%) who reported a consistent average use of one gel per week. Participants in the High with Varying Gel Use Trajectory reported trying out a greater number of positions when inserting the gel across the 12-weeks than peers in the Low and Consistent Gel Use Trajectory. YGBMSM reporting more RAI occasions during the trial were more likely be present in the High with Varying Gel Use Trajectory than peers in the Low and Consistent Gel Use Trajectory. An applicator designed for rectal delivery of microbicides was tested for acceptability by 95 young men who have sex with men, who self-administered 4 mL of placebo gel prior to receptive anal intercourse over 90 days. Subsequently, 24 of the participants self-administered rectally 4 mL of tenofovir or placebo gel over 7 days using a vaginal applicator, and compared both applicators on a Likert scale of 1-10, with 10 the highest rating. Participants reported high likelihood to use either applicator in the future (mean scores 9.3 and 8.8 respectively, p = ns). Those who tested both liked the vaginal applicator significantly more than the rectal applicator (7.8 vs. 5.2, p = 0.003). Improvements in portability, conspicuousness, aesthetics, tip comfort, product assembly and packaging were suggested for both. This rectal-specific applicator was not superior to a vaginal applicator. While likelihood of future use is reportedly high, factors that decrease acceptability may erode product use over time in clinical trials. Further attention is needed to develop user-friendly, quick-acting rectal microbicide delivery systems. n ethnically diverse sample of 120 mostly gay-identified men who engaged in 'bareback' intercourse was recruited via the Internet in New York City. By study design three quarters of participants were HIV-uninfected and engaged in condomless receptive anal intercourse. In the course of face-to-face in-depth interviews, participants were asked what led them to have their first bareback experience as well as to continue with the behavior. Qualitative analysis identified the pivotal role that sexual pleasure and intimacy have in this population and how drives for sexual satisfaction, adventure, intimacy, and love overpower health concerns and condom use recommendations. Men interested in bareback sex use a variety of defense mechanisms to account for, justify, and exonerate their behavior. Dating is a normative behavior for youth, yet few studies have examined the relationship between romantic partner-seeking and sexual behavior among young men who have sex with men (YMSM). This omission is most notable across studies examining YMSM's partner-seeking behaviors online. In this study, we examined the relationship between sexual behaviors and online partner-seeking behaviors for casual and romantic partners in a sample of YMSM ( N = 431; M = 21.49 years old, SD = 1.94) who reported using the Internet to meet other men. Using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), we found YMSM in the High Romantic/High Casual group had more unprotected partners than YMSM in other categories. YMSM in the High Romantic/Low Casual group had fewer unprotected partners than the High Romantic/High Casual group. We discuss the implications of our findings and conclude that there is a need to further examine romantic partner-seeking among YMSM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
