Going beyond previous work, this paper presents a systematic literature review that explores the deployment of satellites, drones, and ground-based sensors for yield prediction in agriculture. It covers multiple aspects of the topic, including crop types, key sensor platforms, data analysis techniques, and performance in estimating yield. To this end, datasets from Scopus and Web of Science were analyzed, resulting in the full review of 269 out of 1429 retrieved publications. Our study revealed that China (93 articles, >1800 citations) and the USA (58 articles, >1600 citations) are prominent contributors in this field; while satellites were the primary remote sensing platform (62%), followed by airborne (30%) and proximal sensors (27%). Additionally, statistical methods were used in 157 articles, and model-based approaches were utilized in 60 articles, while machine learning and deep learning were employed in 142 articles and 62 articles, respectively. When comparing methods, machine learning and deep learning methods exhibited high accuracy in crop yield prediction, while other techniques also demonstrated success, contingent on the specific crop platform and method employed. The findings of this study serve as a comprehensive roadmap for researchers and farmers, enabling them to make data-driven decisions and optimize agricultural practices, paving the way towards a fully digitized yield prediction. Rice is an important food crop in China, and diseases and pests are the main factors threatening its safety, ecology, and efficient production. The development of remote sensing technology provides an important means for non-destructive and rapid monitoring of diseases and pests that threaten rice crops. This paper aims to provide insights into current and future trends in remote sensing for rice crop monitoring. First, we expound the mechanism of remote sensing monitoring of rice diseases and pests and introduce the applications of different commonly data sources (hyperspectral data, multispectral data, thermal infrared data, fluorescence, and multi-source data fusion) in remote sensing monitoring of rice diseases and pests. Secondly, we summarize current methods for monitoring rice diseases and pests, including statistical discriminant type, machine learning, and deep learning algorithm. Finally, we provide a general framework to facilitate the monitoring of rice diseases or pests, which provides ideas and technical guidance for remote sensing monitoring of unknown diseases and pests, and we point out the challenges and future development directions of rice disease and pest remote sensing monitoring. Soil moisture critically influences crop growth, especially in dryland environments. Precise agricultural management requires real-time monitoring of stratified soil moisture and assessment of crops' daily water needs. We aim to provide low-cost, high-throughput information acquisition services for dryland regions with underdeveloped infrastructure and offer scientific support for sustainable water resource management. We used UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) with multi-spectral sensors for routine maize monitoring, capturing leaf reflectance. Constructing vegetation indices, we quantified the relationship between leaf water content and surface soil moisture, using the Biswas model to predict deep soil moisture distribution. We used UVAs to monitor crop height and calculated the daily water demand for the entire growth period of corn using the Penman Montes equation. We found an R2 of 0.8603, RMSE of 2.455%, and MAE of 2.099% between NDVI and canopy leaf water content. A strong linear correlation (R2 = 0.7510) between canopy leaf water content and soil moisture was observed in the top 20 cm of soil. Deep soil moisture inversion from the top 20 cm soil moisture showed an R2 of 0.9984, with RE mostly under 10%, but exceeding 20% at 120 cm depth. We also constructed a maize height model aligning with a sigmoidal growth curve (R2 = 0.9724). Maize's daily water demand varied from 0.7121 to 9.4263 mm, exhibiting a downward-opening parabolic trend. Integration of rainfall and soil water data allowed for dynamic irrigation adjustments, mitigating drought and water stress effects on crops. We highlighted UAV multi-spectral imaging's effectiveness in monitoring crop water needs, facilitating quick daily water requirement estimations. Sustainable agriculture and soil conservation methods are integral to ensuring food safety and mitigating environmental impacts worldwide. However, crop residue/straw serves many vital functions from tillage to harvest, so that quantifying the appropriate amount of Crop Straw Cover (CSC) on the soil surface is crucial for monitoring tillage intensity and crop yield performance. Thus, a novel research study is conducted to develop an innovative approach for accurately estimating and mapping the Wheat Straw Cover (WSC) percentage through two different multispectral satellites (Sentinel-2B MSI and Landsat-8 OLI-TIRS), using remote sensing-based techniques in Changshu County, China. The field measurements were collected from 80 distinct sites and eight images were acquired through both satellites for the analysis process by applying Crop Residue Indices (CRIs). The results indicate that the coefficients of determination (R2) of the Normalized Difference Tillage Index (NDTI) computed by Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 were 0.80 and 0.70, respectively, and the root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) values were in the range from 6.88 to 12.04% for CRIs for both satellite data. Additionally, the comparative analysis of the developed model revealed that NDTI was R2 = 0.85 and R2 = 0.77, followed by STI, R2 = 0.82 and R2 = 0.80 and NDRI, R2 = 0.69 and R2 = 0.56 for Sentinel-2B and Landsat-8 data, respectively. Hence, the correlation strength of NDTI, STI and NDRI with WSC percentages was markedly superior by using Sentinel-2B spectral data compared to Landsat-8 ones. Moreover, the NDTI of Sentinel-2B data was the most accurate in mapping the WSC percentage in four categories, with an overall accuracy of 86.53% (κ = 0.78), surpassing the other CRI indices. Therefore, these findings suggest that the multispectral imagery of Sentinel-2B bolstered with enhanced temporal and spatial data was superior for precisely estimating and mapping the WSC percentage compared to Landsat-8 data over a large-scale agricultural region. Farmland is the basis for human survival and development. The phenomenon of cropland abandonment has seriously affected national agricultural production and food security. In this study, remote sensing monitoring of abandoned cropland is carried out based on multisource time series remote sensing data using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform. Landsat and Sentinel-2 time series data from 2010–2021 were used to obtain monthly synthetic cloud-free image sets in combination with cropland plot data. The time series farmland probability dataset was generated using the random forest classification method. The LandTrendr algorithm was used to extract and analyse the time series cropland probability dataset. Finally, this study also explored the drivers of change in abandoned cropland in Fujian Province. The results show that (1) the LandTrendr algorithm can effectively extract abandoned farmland and avoid the impact of pseudovariation resulting from non-farmland categories. A total of 87.02% of the abandoned farmland was extracted in 2018; 87.50% of the abandoned farmland was extracted in 2020. (2) The abandoned area in Fujian Province fluctuated after a significant increase in 2012, with the abandoned area exceeding 30 thousand hectares. Since 2017, the abandoned area has decreased to slightly below 30 thousand hectares. (3) The regression results of the factors affecting abandoned cropland in Fujian Province show that the increase in the number of agricultural workers and the improvement in soil organic matter content will significantly reduce the area of abandoned cropland in Fujian Province, while the increase in the rate of urbanization, poor road accessibility, and insufficient irrigation conditions will increase the area of abandoned cropland. The results of this study are useful for conducting surveys of cropland abandonment and obtaining timely and accurate data on cropland abandonment. Winter wheat is one of the most important food crops in China, and it is of great significance to ensure national food security. The accurate extraction of wheat-growing areas is a prerequisite for growth assessments, stress monitoring, and yield assessments. In this study, GF-6 (8 m resolution) and Sentinel-2 (10 m resolution) remote sensing images were used to create datasets for the accurate extraction of winter-wheat growing areas by improving the U-Net model. First, U-Net was used as the base network to extract features, and then the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) was embedded in the basic convolutional units in the coding and decoding layers of the network to enhance or suppress the features to improve the feature-expression capability of the model, and to finally complete the end-to-end winter-wheat planting-area extraction. SegNet, DeepLabV3+, and U-Net-CBAM were selected as the comparison models, and they were tested using the test set in the Sentinel-2 dataset. The precision of the U-Net-CBAM model trained on the GF-6 dataset was 84.92%, the MIoU was 77.1%, the recall was 88.28%, the overall precision (OA) was 91.64%, and the F1 was 86.45%. For training on Sentinel-2 dataset, those values were: 90.06% for precision, 83.18% for MIoU, 90.78% for recall, 93.93% for OA, and 90.52% for F1, which showed significantly better results than those of the comparison models, indicating that U-Net-CBAM improved the accuracy of winter-wheat area extraction.
