The concern over sustainable livelihoods in African drylands is an issue that has received considerable attention from researchers and policy makers alike. Over the past two decades African rural areas have undergone rapid changes, whereby, rural income diversification has become the most salient feature. With a particular focus on dryland ecosystems, among the major challenges facing communities in these areas is recurrent drought leading to conditions of food insecurity. This paper draws on experience on coping mechanisms for food insecurity from an agro-pastoral community in Mvumi, located in the semiarid areas of central Tanzania. An understanding of livelihoods of people in this area has involved examining how communities have managed to adjust their livelihood in the midst of challenges resulting not only from drought but also from various forces such as socio–economic, political and ecological factors. It has been found out that, despite profound food crisis in this area, people are not always desperate and that there are possibilities for realizing some hidden potentials of dryland resources for livelihood diversification. The issue of sustainable natural resource management in such areas is, however, questionable because of some adverse environmental effects associated with some of the coping mechanisms. This paper examines the changes in land use/cover types in the degraded environment of central Tanzania over the last 45 years, and how such changes have influenced agricultural and livelihoods sustainability, especially in the Irangi Hills. Changes of land use/cover were measured through aerial photographs interpretations, while local perceptions and description of change were addressed through household interviews and field observations. The results of this study show that there have been variations over the years in terms of both the areas and spatial distribution of cultivated fields. The total land cultivated increased from 31% in the late 1970s to 35% in early 1990s, mainly because of agricultural expansion to sandy watercourses and former grazing areas. Water courses shrank by 55% between late 1970s and early 1990s providing new areas for cultivation. Over the last 45 years, the open and wooded grasslands, and tree-cover types covered about 40% of the total land area, ranging from 29% in 1960 to 43–45% between late 1970s and early 1990s. Spatial and temporal distribution of the cultivated fields and other vegetation cover types were influenced by differences in the scale of land degradation, and the soil-conservation initiatives that have been implemented. Following the 1998 National Forest Policy and Forest Act of 2002, participatory forest management (PFM) is being introduced in Tanzania. PFM has two key objectives: to reduce forest degradation thereby increasing ecosystem services, and to improve the livelihoods of local villagers. A unique data set collected in 2006 suggests that significant challenges remain with respect to communicating the new forest policies if the objectives of PFM are to be achieved. First, villagers as a group are much less well informed than other stakeholders, and their knowledge is often inaccurate. Second, women are less likely than men to have heard of the changes. Third, how PFM will contribute to poverty reduction (a key objective of PFM) is not always clear. Fourth, environmental degradation may not be reduced as much as anticipated – without alternatives sources, villagers often continue to cut trees for charcoal and firewood in the protected forests. Finally, several mismatches in perceptions are identified that could lead to difficulties in implementing PFM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of domestication in conserving indigenous plant diversity on farmlands was studied in West Usambara Mountains, Tanzania by structured, semi-structured and unstructured interviews; participant observation; literature review and botanical identification in March 2006. There was high diversity of indigenous plant species on farmlands (73%) compared with exotics (27%). For the number of plants per species, a small proportion of indigenous plants (14%) were recorded compared with exotics (86%). Although the number of domesticated indigenous plant species has declined by 8% between 1998 and 2006, still 96% of the respondents practise domestication and they have domesticated at least one indigenous plant species each. Gender equity in domestication is lacking given that male-headed households had domesticated significantly more plant species on farms than female-headed households. Sustainability in domestication is questionable because of increasing number of exotic plants of very few species on farmlands, the phenomenon that encourages monoculture, thus threatening conservation of species diversity in inhabited areas. Suggestions for promoting domestication as an important indigenous method for conserving biodiversity are given, including the need for more number of studies to explore the biodiversity of other organisms associated with the domesticated indigenous plants. Vehicle-wildlife collisions have been reported to be a great threat to wildlife survival and traffic safety in many countries (Das, Ahmed, Lahkar, & Sharma, [9]; Hobday & Minstrell, [14]; Seiler, [37]). Else-ways, spatial determinants of vehicle-wildlife collisions encompass variation in animal abundance, the location of preferred foraging habitats, human settlements, landscape topography, road and traffic characteristics and fence location (Hubbard, Danielson, & Schmitz, [15]; Nielsen, Anderson, & Grund, [29]). On average, one vehicle collision with a medium/large wild mammal occurred approximately every 4 days at an encounter rate of 0.03 animals/km. The article presents a study on the first record of a fungal genus Basidiobolus/Amphoromorpha fungus on a spider from a pitfall trap material from Tanzania. The spider was prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) by being transferred to a series of alcohol and acetone, mounted on an aluminium stub. The scanning electron images show that the fungus does not penetrate the host, supporting the assumption that Amphoromorpha does not harm the arthropod host.

The article presents a study that examines the decline of puku antelope population between 1999 and 2003 in Tanzania. It states that a survey was conducted at the Kilombero Game Controlled Area (KGCA) near the areas of Mofu and Madabadaba via direct observation fixed-point transects using a Global Positioning System (GPS). Results of the study indicate that the lowest abundance values occurred in 2003 based on the five-year time period when values of both locations are combined.

Sustainable resource management intends to allocate resources in such a way that unnecessary deterioration of biophysical and socio-economical systems is avoided. In Bukoba Area where rainfalls are plenty, evergreen grasslands were expansive and forests were limited, eucalypts ( eucalyptus spp.) and pines ( pinus spp.) were grown on grasslands for preventing land degradation through deforestation and for providing additional source of income for rural poor. This study shows that in addition to detrimental consequence of eucalyptus and pine forests on soil resources, conversion of Bukoban grasslands to forests has negatively impacted livelihood of the rural poor. Growing eucalypts and pines on grasslands prevented a farming system that enabled integration of grasslands, cattle keeping and crop production. Consequently, the grasslands role of nutrients cycling was disrupted, food crop production reduced, home-gardens productivity declined, majority deprived important livelihood asset and foreign income flow into the area reduced. In developing countries, participatory land-use planning is seen as a panacea to mitigate land-use conflicts and enhance land productivity. This assumption has not been thoroughly tested in wildlife corridors. Three villages were selected for this study. Several methods were used to provide indication of the performance of the plans against their stated objectives of mitigating conflicts and conserving wildlife corridors. Three hundred and fifty-eight households and eight park and extension workers were interviewed. In addition, focus group discussion with the nomadic Barabeig, field assessment and review of land-use plan/general management plan reports were carried out. Results reveal that land-use plans failed to achieve their set objectives. For example, 75% of the households held this view. Major causes of failure were insufficient participation by stakeholders in the planning process, lack of robust, transparent and accountable implementation strategies, inadequacy of qualified staff and lack of ‘holistic approach’ to the planning process. Taking these findings into account, an improved buffer zone land-use planning framework is suggested. For the framework to enhance both conservation and development and to enable policies and legislation, equitable benefit sharing and conservation education, initiation of compensation schemes for depredation caused by wild animals and intensification of patrols are required. Traditional reserved pastures namely 'Olopololi/Alalili' for Maasai, 'Ngitili' for Sukuma and 'Milaga' for Gogo have been in use among the pastoral and agropastoral communities for many years. These reserves provide dry season feed for ruminant livestock especially cattle, sheep and goats. Apart from the provision of forage materials, these reserves provide fuel wood, construction material and medicinal plants. These traditional forage conservation practices also contribute to soil conservation and forage species biodiversity. However, studies conducted in these traditional forage reserves at Tingatinga (Maasai), Makang'wa (Gogo) and in Mwamishali/Mwanyanhina (Sukuma) in Tanzania show limitations of the reserves especially, in providing adequate dry matter and proteins for both maintenance and production of livestock. Nevertheless, there are opportunities for improvement on these traditional practices through introduction of improved grasses, legumes and tree/shrub species as well as proper maintenance of the superior local species and cultivars. Species richness and diversity in agricultural landscapes are important characteristics of agro-ecosystems that determine their potential for biodiversity conservation. This study assessed species composition, richness, diversity and local use of on-farm trees in predominantly agricultural landscape in the Usambaras, north-eastern Tanzania. Assessments were carried out in 90 randomly selected individual farmlands. We identified 47 tree species belonging to 23 families and used by local people for various purposes. The most dominant species were Albizia gummifera (Gmel) C. A. Sm. (mkenge), Parinari excelsa Sabine ssp holstii (Engl.) R. Grah. (muula), Newtonia buchananii (Bak.) Gilb. and Bout (mkufi), Syzygium guineense (Willd) D.C. (mshihwi), Ficus capensis L. (mvumo) and Casearia engleri (Gilg) (mkokoko). These species are indigenous and were retained from existing ones during farm clearing. The species diversity (by the Simpson's and Shannon-Wiener diversity indices of 0.07 and 2.8 respectively) is comparable with that of adjacent natural forests. There are apparently high on-farm tree species richness and diversity, the conservation of which can contribute to ex-situ biodiversity conservation. On-farm tree management should be encouraged, especially where there is population pressure on the existing natural forests. In Serengeti fire is used as a management tool to improve the forage quality for large herbivores. However, little is known of the effects of fire on grazing resources particularly sward structure, its influence on herbivore forage patch selection and utilization to the relative amount of phytomass consumed in burnt and nonburnt patches. From September 2003 to July 2004, consumption of phytomass by large herbivores was assessed with eight samplings in six grassland sites in the Western Corridor in Serengeti National Park. Each site had burnt and nonburnt plots. Movable cages were used to exclude grazing between samplings and plant material harvests were used to assess phytomass and sward structure changes in time. Nonburnt grasslands had consistently larger phytomass at all sampling events whereas the ratio for live leaf/total phytomass was higher in burnt grassland at early postfire stages, but declined later in the season. Moreover, periodic consumption of both total phytomass and different phytomass components shifted between burnt and nonburnt grasslands, but there were also large site-specific responses. The shift appears to be related to the balance between the amount of phytomass available and the quality of the forage in terms of the ratio between live and total phytomass. The study highlights the significance of maintaining mosaics of burnt and nonburnt areas with an adequate provision of forage amount and quality all year round. Cependant, on sait peu de choses sur les effets du feu sur les ressources en herbe, particulièrement la structure de la prairie, son influence sur la sélection des sites de pâturage par les herbivores et l’utilization et la quantité relative de biomasse végétale consommée dans les sites brûlés ou non. De septembre 2003 à juillet 2004, nous avons évalué cette consommation au moyen de huit échantillonnages, dans six sites de pâturage dans le corridor ouest du Parc National de Serengeti. Chaque site avait des plots brûlés et non brûlés. Nous avons utilisé des cages mobiles pour empêcher le pâturage entre les échantillons, et les collectes de matériel végétal ont servi àévaluer les changements de la biomasse végétale et de la structure de l’herbe avec le temps. La prairie non brûlée avait en permanence la plus grande biomasse végétale de tous les échantillons, tandis que le rapport feuilles fraîches/ biomasse végétale totale était plus élevé dans les sites brûlés peu de temps après les feux, mais il déclinait plus tard. De plus, la consommation périodique de biomasse végétale totale et de composants différents de la biomasse végétale allait alternativement des prairies brûlées à non brûlées et il y avait aussi d’importantes réponses spécifiques des sites. Cette alternance semble liée à l’équilibre entre la quantité de biomasse végétale disponible et la qualité du fourrage en termes de rapport entre matière végétale vivante et matière végétale totale. A capture-mark-recapture study was conducted in crop fields in Morogoro, Tanzania, to investigate how the population dynamics of multimammate field rats, Mastomys natalensis, was influenced by the commonly practised land preparation methods and cropping systems. Two land preparation methods (tractor ploughing and slash and burn) and two cropping systems (mono-cropping with maize and inter-cropping with maize and beans) were investigated in a Complete Randomized Design experiment with 2 × 2 factors, and two 0.5 ha replicates per treatment. Mastomys natalensis comprised 97.8% of the abundance of the three rodent species captured in the study area.
