Vibration analysis of wing-box structures is a crucial aspect of the aeronautic design to avoid aeroelastic effects during normal flight operations. The deformation of a wing structure can induce nonlinear couplings, causing a different dynamic behavior from the linear counterpart, and nonlinear effects should be considered for more realistic simulations. Moreover, composite materials and aeroelastic tailoring require new simulation tools to include bending–torsion coupling effects. In this research, a beam finite element with bending–torsion coupling formulation is used to investigate the effects of the deflection of beam structures with different aspect ratios. The nonlinear effects are included in the finite element formulation. The geometrical effect is considered, applying a deformation dependent transformation matrix. Stiffness effects are introduced in the stiffness matrix with Hamilton’s Principle and a perturbation approach. The results obtained with the beam finite element model are compared with numerical and experimental evidence.

A new Range Equation for a hybrid-electric propeller-driven aircraft was formulated by an original derivation based on the comparison of Virtual Electrical Aircraft (VEA) and Virtual Thermal Aircraft (VTA) range equations. The new formulation makes it possible to study the range of a hybrid aircraft with pre-established values of electric motor usage rate. The fuel and battery mass are defined "a priori", and do not depend on the power split, so even the aircraft’s total mass is constant. The comparison with the typical range formulas available for hybrid aircraft was made on the basis of a reference composite VLA category aircraft manufactured by the CFM Air company. The analysis carried out shows that there is an optimum hybridization level as a function of the pre-set specific energy of the batteries system.

Current CubeSats usually exhibit a low structural mass efficiency and a low internal volume for their payloads. The present work aims to propose an advanced structural architecture for CubeSats that addresses the issues of low structural mass efficiency and payload volume. The starting concept is the smart tiles architecture for satellites developed for the ARAMIS (an Italian acronym for a highly modular architecture for satellite infrastructures) CubeSat project. By introducing multifunctional structures and lightweight, composite materials in the design of smart tiles, the volumetric and structural mass efficiency of the entire CubeSat are enhanced. The advantages of the chosen approach are preliminarily analyzed in terms of the volumetric efficiency and amplitude of the payload design space. A 1U battery tile design is then selected to investigate the multifunctional structures design aspects in the project of space structures. A battery tile prototype is designed, produced, and tested. The CubeSat volumetric increment and the payload volume gain with respect to the traditional architecture is shown to reach a maximum of 37%. The CubeSat structural mass ratio can be reduced to 16.7%.

Advanced composites have a brittle nature making them highly susceptible to failure and propagation under impact loading conditions. Appropriate modeling techniques to accurately simulate these conditions are required. This study presents and examines a coupled thermo-mechanical modeling technique and its associated numerical simulations for analyzing carbon fiber-reinforced composite panels subjected to high-velocity impact. The essential numerical parameters necessary to accurately simulate the selected configuration are determined through a physical-based approach, which has not been previously reported. By following the proposed framework, the conventional trial-and-error calibration process that relies on an extensive testing campaign is minimized. A stacked shell-cohesive methodology has been applied to T800/F3900 unidirectional carbon fiber/epoxy composite panel with 16 plies in a quasi-isotropic layup configuration [(0/90/45/-45)2]s. The flat composite panel was manufactured according to ASTM D8010 standards. Both failure condition and progressive damage analysis have been explored and discussed in comparison with numerical and experimental test cases available in the open literature. Thermal effects on the mechanical performance of composite targets are also discussed based on the application of the constitutive transient thermal coupling method available in LS-DYNA®. The contact heat generated by the conversion of impact-induced damage and the kinetic energy of the projectile is also evaluated and analyzed. New observations regarding modeling techniques, energy transfer, and damage mechanisms in target plates are offered. Additionally, findings related to changes in material characteristics resulting from heat transfer are discussed.

This research presents a new beam finite element capable of predicting static and dynamic behavior of beam structures with bending-torsion coupling. The model here derived establishes a relation between the bending and torsional nodal degree of freedom of a two node beam element. The equilibrium equations are derived neglecting the non-linear terms while the stiffness and mass matrices are derived with Galerkin’s method. The shape functions are obtained considering Timoshenko’s hypothesis and the torsional moment constant along the element. The model has been validated through numerical and experimental results for static and dynamic simulation. The comparison revealed a relative difference mostly lower than 5% for static deformations and natural frequency prediction, while the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC) confirmed the consistency with numerical and experimental results in terms of mode shape similarity.

Thin-walled composite box beam structural configuration is representative of a specific high aspect ratio wing structure. The optimal design procedure and lay-up definition including appropriate coupling necessary for aerospace applications has been identified by means of “ad hoc” analytical formulation and by application of commercial code. The overall equivalent bending, torsional and coupled stiffness are derived and the accuracy of the simplified beam model is demonstrated by the application of Altair Optistruct. A simple case of a coupled cantilevered beam with load at one end is introduced to demonstrate that stiffness and torsion angle distribution does not always correspond to the trends that one would intuitively expect. The maximum of torsional stiffness is not obtained with fibers arranged at 45° and, at the maximum torsional stiffness, there is no minimum rotation angle. This observation becomes essential in any design process of composite structures where the constraints impose structural couplings. Furthermore, the presented theory is also extended to cases in which it is necessary to include composite/stiffened hybrid configurations. Good agreement has been found between the theoretical simplified beam model and numerical analysis. Finally, the selected composite configuration was compared to an experimental test case. The numerical and experimental validation is presented and discussed. A good correlation was found confirming the validity of the overall optimization for the optimal lay-up selection and structural configuration.

CubeSats usually adopt aluminum alloys for primary structures, and a number of studies exist on Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) primary structures. The internal volume of a spacecraft is usually occupied by battery arrays, reducing the volume available to the payload. In this paper, a CFRP structural/battery array configuration has been designed in order to integrate the electrical power system with the spacecraft bus primary structure. The configuration has been designed according to the modular design philosophy introduced in the AraMiS project. The structure fits on an external face of a 1U CubeSat. Its external side houses two solar cells and the opposite side houses power system circuitry. An innovative cellular structure concept has been adopted and a set of commercial LiPo batteries has been embedded between two CFRP panels and spaced out with CFRP ribs. Compatibility with launch mechanical loads and vibrations has been shown with a finite element analysis. The results suggest that, even with a low degree of structural integration applied to a composite structural battery, more volume and mass can be made available for the payload, with respect to traditional, functionally separated structures employing aluminum alloy. The low degree of integration is introduced to allow the use of relatively cheap and commercial-off-the-shelf components.

In the last ten years, different concepts of electric vertical take-off and landing aircrafts (eVTOLs) have been tested. This article addresses the problem of the choice of the best configuration. VTOLs built since the fifties are presented and their advantages, disadvantages, and problems are discussed. Three representative eVTOLs, one for each main configuration, are compared on five main parameters and three reference missions. The parameters are disk loading, total hover time, cruise speed, practical range, and flight time. The performance of the eVTOLs on the urban, extra-urban, and long-range mission is evaluated computing the time and energy required. The results show that the best configuration depends on the mission. The multirotor is more efficient in hover. The vectored thrust jet is more efficient in cruise and has a higher range. The lift + cruise is a compromise.
