With the development of medical technique and computational electromagnetics, high resolution anatomic human models have already been widely developed and used in computation of electromagnetic fields induced in human body. Although these so called voxel-based human models are powerful tools for research on electromagnetic safety, their unchangeable standing posture makes it impossible to simulate a realistic scenario in which people have a lot of different postures. This paper describes a poser program package which was developed as an improved version of the free-from deformation technique to overcome this problem. It can set rotation angles of different human joints and then deform the original human model to make it have different postures. The original whole-body human model can be deformed smoothly, continuity of internal tissues and organs is maintained and the mass of different tissues and organs can be conserved in a reasonable level. As a typical application of the postured human models, this paper also studies the effect of the step voltage due to a lightning strike on the human body. Two voxel-based human body models with standing and walking posture were developed and integrated into simulation models to compute the current density distribution in the human body shocked by the step voltage. In order to speed up the transient simulation, the reduced c technique was used, leading to a speedup factor of around 20. The error introduced by the reduced c technique is discussed and simulation results are presented in detail.

This paper analyzes the effect of a change in cell size and of transmit power control on the human exposure to electromagnetic fields. In a simplified network configuration the well accepted COST-Hata model is considered to assess the path loss. It is shown that increasing the base station den- sity will not generally raise the exposure but can rather help to lower it significantly. The exposure due to base stations is hardly affected by allowing a transmit power reduction at the base station for individual links. In contrast to this, it is demonstrated that transmit power control at the mobile sta- tion is a helpful means to lower the exposure efficiently. power control allows the transmission of information dedi- cated to individual users with a power level that is lower than a scheduled maximum transmit power. This results in a re- duction of interference and, furthermore, in a reduction of the human exposure to electromagnetic fields. In this paper the amount of the decrease in the exposure to electromagnetic fields when utilizing transmit power control is quantified. 2 The mobile radio network model To assess the human exposure to electromagnetic fields in a radio network, knowledge of the most important factors in- fluencing the exposure is necessary. Aside from the network layout and wave propagation model, the base station's and mobile station's technical data and configuration are relevant.

Conventional CMOS image sensors with a linear transfer characteristic only have a limited dynamic range (DR) of about 60–70 dB. To extend the dynamic range considerably, the already successfully demonstrated concept of a linear self-reset pixel was employed in this work. With the self-reset concept the limit of the maximum analyzable photo generated charge (Qmax⁡) during the exposure time is extended to a multiple of the saturation charge of the photo diode (Qsat) by asynchronous self-resets of the photo diode. Additionally, the remaining charge at the end of the exposure time is evaluated to increase the resolution of the opto-electronic conversion. Thus we achieved pixels with a DR of more than 120 dB combined with an improved low light sensitivity using a pinned photodiode. This paper focuses on two topics: One is the realization and opto-electronic characterization of further self-reset pixel cells for an experimental optimization of the functionality with respect to linearity and high signal-to-noise ratio. The second one is the assembly and digital readout of a cluster structure composed of 16 × 16 pixel matrix on a CMOS test chip. One constraint for later usage of the pixel cells in a high resolution (> VGA) image sensor is the required layout area of the individual circuit blocks. For the cluster structure a size of 20 × 20 µm2 for the analog part of the pixel containing the photo diode and the other analog circuit blocks, the comparator and the signal shaping, was desired. The circuit design and layout work included several variants of the pinned photo diode with floating diffusion (FD) readout node, which is also used for analog voltage storage, and different control transistors. Further for the comparator a telescopic differential amplifier with high gain was implemented as well as peripheral 10 bit counter/shift register as static and dynamic versions. Test chips have been fabricated in an advanced 0.18 µm CMOS technology for optical sensors with low leakage currents. The sensor chips have been evaluated with a specifically developed test setup which gives the flexibility to arbitrarily generate the digital and analog control signals in terms of timing and voltage levels. Based on this, the number of asynchronous self-resets could be read out from the counters of the pixel cells as coarse values. The remaining charge at the end of the integration time was digitized using a ramp analog to digital conversion and could be read out as fine values. An opto-electronic characterization with adjustable illumination from 0 lx to 13 klx was done to measure and analyze the opto-electronic conversion function (OECF) and the noise of six different self-reset pixel cells having the high-gain differential amplifier as comparator. Finally the coarse values of two implemented 16 × 16 pixel clusters could be read out as a mini camera using a lens for optical image formation.

With increasing radar activities in the automotive, industrial and private sector, there is a need to test radar sensors in their environment. A radar target simulator can help testing radar systems repeatably. In this paper, the authors present a concept of low-cost hardware for radar target simulation. The theoretical foundations are derived and analyzed. An implementation of a demonstrator operating in the 24 GHz ISM band is shown for which the dynamical range simulation was implemented in a FPGA with fast sampling ADCs and DACs. By using a FIR filtering approach a fine discretization of the range could be reached which will furthermore allow an inherent and automatic Doppler simulation by moving the target.

Short range inductive data transfer has become very popular in the last years with the increased interest in technologies like RFID and NFC. Additionally, wireless power transfer has been a field of intensive research and product development. In industrial applications, a combination of both is often needed to replace mechanical contacts, mainly for safety and reliability reasons, especially regarding spark prevention and maintenance reduction. In this paper, we present a compact inductive structure that can be implemented in an existing wireless energy transfer system. The structure is developed by field considerations, leading to a single structure comprising two signal ports that are decoupled from each other, but can be used to transfer a signal to a second structure of that kind with very small interference. An optimisation to achieve comparable channel characteristics is conducted by using 3-D field simulations. Subsequent measurements are conducted to verify the achieved performance.

During the increasing dissemination of renewable energy sources the potential and actual interference effects of wind turbine plants became obvious. Turbines reflect the signals of weather radar and other radar systems. In addition to the static radar echoes, in particular the Doppler echoes are to be mentioned as an undesirable impairment Keränen (2014). As a result, building permit is refused for numerous new wind turbines, as the potential interference can not be reliably predicted. As a contribution to the improvement of this predictability, measurements are planned which aim at the high-frequency characterisation of wind energy installations. In this paper, a cost-effective FMCW radar is presented, which is operated in the same frequency band (C-band) as the weather radars of the German weather service. Here, the focus is on the description of the hardware design including the considerations used for its dimensioning.

Automotive electric components are required to pass radiated emission tests. According to CISPR-25 standard (ALSE method), an expensive anechoic chamber is needed for conducting the field emission testing. Reproducibility due to high sensitivity to chamber and setup details is poor. Alternative methods, which perform measurements without using a chamber are preferred. This paper provides an alternative pre-compliance method for predicting the fields of CISPR-25 results for frequencies below 30 MHz, based mainly on electric near-field measurements. The motivation is that common-mode current measurements or magnetic near-field measurement based methods give good field prediction above 30 MHz, but fail below 30 MHz. The proposed method applies Huygens' Principle for field prediction. The electric field distribution for the defined Huygens' surface and the equivalent currents are estimated from a small number of field measurements close to the ground plane. It is shown that the electric field can be well predicted, compared with a full-wave simulation the deviation is within 4 dB, compared with a standard antenna measurement up to 3 MHz the deviation is less than 1 dB.

Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) with simultaneous data transmission through coupled magnetic resonators is investigated in this paper. The development of this system is dedicated to serve as a basis for applications in the field of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), for example tracking vital parameters remotely, charge and control sensors and so on. Due to these different scenarios we consider, it is important to have a system which is reliable under the circumstance of changing positioning of the receiving device. State of the art radio systems would be able to handle this. Nevertheless, energy harvesting from far field sources is not sufficient to power the devices additionally on mid-range distances. For this reason, coupled magnetic resonant circuits are proposed as a promising alternative, although suffering from more complex positioning dependency. Based on measurements on a simple prototype system, an equivalent circuit description is used to model the transmission system dependent on different transmission distances and impedance matching conditions. Additionally, the simulation model is used to extract system parameters such as coupling coefficients, coil resistance and self-capacitance, which cannot be calculated in a simple and reliable way. Furthermore, a mathematical channel model based on the schematic model has been built in MATLAB©. It is used to point out the problems occurring in a transmission system with variable transmission distance, especially the change of the passband's centre frequency and its bandwidth. Existing solutions dealing with this distance dependent behaviour, namely the change of the transmission frequency dependent on distance and the addition of losses to the resonators to increase the bandwidth, are considered as not inventive. First, changing the transmission frequency increases the complexity in the data transmission system and would use a disproportional total bandwidth compared to the actually available bandwidth. Additionally, adding losses causes a decrease in the energy transmission efficiency. Based on these facts, we consider a system that changes the channel itself by tuning the resonant coils in a way that the passband is always at a fixed frequency. This would overcome the previously described issues, and additionally could allow for the possibility to run several independent transmission systems in parallel without disturbing each other.

This paper presents a numerical comparison of charge pumps (CP) designed for a high linearity and a low noise to be used in a fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL). We consider a PLL architecture, where two parallel CPs with DC offset are used. The CP for VCO fine tuning is biased at the output to keep the VCO gain constant. For this specific architecture, only one transistor per CP is relevant for phase detector linearity. This can be an nMOSFET, a pMOSFET or a SiGe HBT, depending on the design. The HBT-based CP shows the highest linearity, whereas all charge pumps show similar device noise. An internal supply regulator with low intrinsic device noise is included in the design optimization.

When the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) initiated the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) project in 1968 it wisely selected K. Rawer as its first Chairperson. With a solid footing and good contacts in both the ground-based and space-based ionospheric communities he was ideally suited to pull together colleagues and data from both communities to help build the first version of the IRI. He assembled a team of 20+ international ionospheric experts in the IRI Working Group and chaired and directed the group from 1968 to 1984. The working group has now grown to 63 members and the IRI model has undergone many revisions as new data became available and new modeling techniques were applied. This paper was presented during a special session of the Kleinheubach Tagung 2013 in honor of K. Rawer's 100th birthday. It will review the current status of the IRI model and project and the international recognition it has achieved. It is quite fitting that this year we not only celebrate K. Rawer's 100th birthday but also the exciting news that his favorite science endeavor, IRI, has been internationally recognized as an ISO (International Standardization Organization) standard. This paper presents an improved finite-element formulation for axially uniform electromagnetic waveguides. It allows for both dielectric and conduction losses and covers the entire range from optics down to the static limit. Propagation coefficients of small magnitude, particularly those of transmission line modes in the low-frequency regime, are computed much more accurately than with previous approaches.

This paper introduces a method for dead time optimization in variable speed motor drive systems. The aim of this method is to reduce the conduction time of the freewheeling diode to a minimum without generation of cross conduction. This results in lower losses, improved EMC, and less overshooting of the phase voltage. The principle of the method is to detect beginning cross currents without adding additional components in the half bridge like resistors or inductances. Only the wave shape of the phase voltage needs to be monitored during switching. This is illustrated by an application of the method to a real power converter.

A new kind of a modular multi-purpose robot system is developed to measure the spatial field distributions of very large as well as of small and crowded areas. The probe is automatically placed at a number of pre-defined positions where measurements are carried out. The advantages of this system are its very low influence on the measured field as well as its wide area of possible applications. In addition, the initial costs are quite low. In this paper the theory underlying the measurement principle is explained. The accuracy is analyzed and sample measurements are presented.

The parasitic coupling between power semiconductors and the heat sink is responsible for noise current in Switching Mode Power Supply (SMPS) systems. In this paper, the variations in the radiation characteristics of heatsinks are investigated with respect to their geometries by use of numerical models. Analyses are facilitated by using a mopole antenna as an EMI receiver and by using simplified heatsink models as EMI transmitters to model the heatsink radiated emissions. In addition, the analysis is confirmed using laboratory measurements.

Near-field measurements are established techniques to obtain the far-field radiation pattern of an Antenna Under Test via near-field measurements and subsequent near-field far-field transformation. For measurements acquired in echoic environments, additional post-processing is required to eliminate the effects of multipath signals in the resulting far-field pattern. One of such methods models the measurement environment as a multiple source scenario whereby the collected near-field data is attributed to the AUT and some scattering centers in the vicinity of the AUT. In this way, the contributions of the AUT at the probe can be separated from those of the disturbers during the near-field far-field transformation if the disturber locations are known. In this paper, we present ways of modeling the scattering centers on equivalent surfaces such that echo suppression is possible with only partial or no information about the geometry of the scatterers.

The complexity of modern systems on the one hand and the rising threat of intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI) on the other hand increase the necessity for systematical risk analysis. Most of the problems can not be treated deterministically since slight changes in the configuration (source, position, polarization, ...) can dramatically change the outcome of an event. For that purpose, methods known from probabilistic risk analysis can be applied. One of the most common approaches is the fault tree analysis (FTA). The FTA is used to determine the system failure probability and also the main contributors to its failure. In this paper the fault tree analysis is introduced and a possible application of that method is shown using a small computer network as an example. The constraints of this methods are explained and conclusions for further research are drawn.

This paper presents a physical (PHY) layer simulator of the IEEE 802.11p standard for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE). This simulator allows the emulation of data transmission via different radio channels as well as the analysis of the resulting system behavior. The PHY layer simulator is part of an integrated simulation platform including a traffic model to generate realistic mobility of vehicles and a 3D ray-optical model to calculate the multipath propagation channel between transmitter and receiver. Besides deterministic channel modeling by means of ray-optical modeling, the simulator can also be used with stochastic channel models of typical vehicular scenarios. With the aid of this PHY layer simulator and the integrated channel models, the resulting performance of the system in terms of bit and packet error rates of different receiver designs can be analyzed in order to achieve a robust data transmission.

In this paper, a broadband time-domain EMI measurement system for measurements from 9 kHz to 18 GHz is presented that allows for compliant EMI measurements in CISPR Band E. Combining ultra-fast analog-to-digital-conversion and real-time digital signal processing on a field-programmable-gate-array (FPGA) with ultra-broadband multi-stage down-conversion, scan times can be reduced by several orders of magnitude in comparison to a traditional heterodyne EMI-receiver. The ultra-low system noise floor of 6–8 dB and the real-time spectrogram allow for the characterisation of the time-behaviour of EMI near the noise floor. EMI measurements of electronic consumer devices and electric household appliances are presented.

In current process technologies, NBTI (negative bias temperature instability) has the most severe aging effect on static random access memory (SRAM) cells. This degradation effect causes loss of stability. In this paper countermeasures against this hazard are presented and quantified via simulations in 90 nm process technologies by the established metrics SNMread, SNMhold, Iread and Write Level. With regard to simulation results and practicability best candidates are chosen and, dependent on individual preferences at memory cell design, the best countermeasure in each case is recommended.

Radio-frequency (RF) scattering parameters (S-parameters) play an important role to characterise RF signal transmission and reflection of active and passive devices such as transmission lines, components, and small-signal amplifiers. Vector network analysers (VNAs) are employed as instrumentation for such measurements. During the last years, the upper frequency limit of this instrumentation has been extended up to several hundreds of GHz for waveguide measurements. Calibration and verification procedures are obligatory prior to the VNA measurement to achieve accurate results and/or to obtain traceability to the International System of Units (SI). Usually, verification is performed by measuring well-matched devices with known S-parameters such as attenuators or short precision waveguide sections (shims). In waveguides, especially above 110 GHz, such devices may not exist and/or are not traceably calibrated. In some cases, e.g. filter networks, the devices under test (DUT) are partly highly reflective. This paper describes the dependency of the S-parameters a) on the calibration procedure, b) on the applied torque to the flange screws during the mating process of the single waveguide elements. It describes further c) how highly-reflective devices (HRD) can be used to verify a calibrated VNA, and d) how a measured attenuation at several hundreds of GHz can be substituted by a well-known coaxial attenuation at 279 MHz, the intermediate frequency (IF) of the VNA, to verify the linearity. This work is a contribution towards traceability and to obtain knowledge about the measurement uncertainty of VNA instrumentation in the millimetre-wave range.

The emission from transmission lines plays an important role in the electromagnetic compatibility of automotive electronic systems. In a frequency range below 200 MHz radiation from cables is often the dominant emission factor. In higher frequency ranges radiation from PCBs and their housing becomes more relevant. Main sources for this emission are the conducting traces. The established field measurement methods according CISPR 25 for evaluation of emissions suffer from the need to use large anechoic chambers. Furthermore measurement data can not be used for simulation model creation in order to compute the overall fields radiated from a car. In this paper a method to determine the far-fields and a simulation model of radiating transmission lines, esp. cable bundles and conducting traces on planar structures, is proposed. The method measures the electromagnetic near-field above the test object. Measurements are done in time domain in order to get phase information and to reduce measurement time. On the basis of near-field data equivalent source identification can be done. Considering correlations between sources along each conductive structure in model creation process, the model accuracy increases and computational costs can be reduced.

Automotive bus systems like FlexRay or CAN transmit safety critical data. To ensure correct functionality under all circumstances, extensive investigations about signal integrity and EMC have to be performed. To be able to use simulation in this validation process, suitable models for the components of the bus systems have to be developed. This paper shows how a combined transceiver model for signal integrity and EMC investigations can be created. The model shows good results in comparison to measurement data.

In this paper an approach for indoor localization based on already installed communication transceiver infrastructure is presented. Only marginal additional hardware is required to implement the localization functionality. The idea is to use a power level detection evaluation of the received signals in communication receivers to localize participants. In the planned configuration the power transmitted from mobile terminals is received by a leaky wave cable. Its length and coupling properties are dimensioned according to the dynamic range of two access points connected to the two cable heads. In order to adapt the problem to circuit-based analysis techniques the leaky wave cable is represented by a distributed antenna system. Thereby the considered design consists of a cascade of coupling structures with broadband Vivaldi antennas connected to the coupling ports. An experimental system has been built and also tested using an automated frequency domain measurement setup. Measurement results relating the system bandwidth to positioning accuracy show good agreement with theoretical investigations.

Eine konfigurierbare Architekturerweiterung um eine Recheneinheit zur Auswertung von Winkelhistogrammen von Objekten ermöglicht in Verbindung mit dem RISC eine echtzeitfähige Klassifikation. Je nach Konfiguration sind für die Architekturerweiterung auf einem Xilinx Virtex-5-FPGA zwischen 3300 und 12 000 Lookup-Tables erforderlich. Bei einer Taktfrequenz von 100 MHz können unabhängig von der Bildauflösung pro Einzelbild in einem 25-Hz-Videodatenstrom bis zu 100 Objekte der Größe 256×256 Pixel analysiert werden. This paper presents the mapping of a video-based approach for real-time evaluation of angular histograms on a modular coprocessor architecture. The architecture comprises several dedicated processing elements for parallel processing of computation-intensive image processing tasks and is coupled with a RISC processor. A configurable architecture extension, especially a processing element for evaluating angular histograms of objects in conjunction with a RISC processor, provides a real-time classification. Depending on the configuration of the architecture extension, 3 300 to 12 000 look-up tables are required for a Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA implementation. Running at a clock frequency of 100 MHz and independently of the image resolution per frame, 100 objects of size 256×256 pixels are analyzed in a 25 Hz video stream by the architecture.

In industrial process measurement instrumentation, radar systems are well established for the measurement of filling levels of liquids in tanks. Level measurements of bulk goods in silos, on the other hand, are more challenging because the material is heaped up and its surface has typically a relatively complex shape. In this paper, the application of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) reconstruction with a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar system for level measurements of bulk goods is evaluated. In the proposed monostatic setup, echo signals are acquired at discrete antenna positions on top of the silo. Spatially resolved information about the surface contour of a bulk good heap is reconstructed by coherent 'delay and sum' processing. The concept has been experimentally evaluated with a 24 to 26 GHz FMCW radar system mounted on a linear stepping motor positioning unit. Measurements on a thin metal wire at different range and on a curved test-object with a diffusely scattering surface have been performed to analyze the system's point spread function (PSF) and performance. Constant range and azimuth resolutions (−6 dB) of 15 cm and 8 cm, respectively, have been obtained up to a range of 6 m, and results of further evaluations show that the proposed concept allows more accurate and reliable level reconstructions of surface profiles compared to the conventional approach with measurements at a single antenna position.

In this paper we explore different hardware accelerators for cryptography based on elliptic curves. Furthermore, we present a hierarchical multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSoC) platform that can be used for fast integration and evaluation of novel hardware accelerators. In respect of two application scenarios the hardware accelerators are coupled at different hierarchy levels of the MPSoC platform. The whole system is implemented in a state of the art 65 nm standard cell technology. Moreover, an FPGA-based rapid prototyping system for fast system verification is presented. Finally, a metric to analyze the resource efficiency by means of chip area, execution time and energy consumption is introduced.

This paper examines the radiation characteristics of a contact emitter conceived for application in hyperthermia and microwave reflex therapy. It is important to analyse the distribution of power density in the near field area, as the radiator's therapeutic sphere of activity is localized here. The contact emitter is a coaxial radiator with an eccentric course of the inner conductor. According to Huygens principle, a theoretical view of the near field radiation characteristics is made by determining the equivalent current densities in the emitter aperture. It is shown that by an eccentric shift of the inner conductor, an almost isotropic near field radiation pattern and power density can be achieved. For this, the electromagnetic field in the emitter aperture is determined by using a Bipolar coordinate system. This calculation considers only the fundamental TEM mode of the contact emitter. Besides the theoretical results near and far fields are simulated using the programme system Ansoft HFSS.

Five different radio network topologies, in the following referred to as "scenario", have been analyzed with regard to their capability to cover a medium size city with 3G mobile services. T-Mobile launched this study to assess different radio network topologies in terms of exposure. Thus, the main focus is to examine if, for exposure reasons, a medium size city can be covered with outer-city located sites. The radio network topologies discussed in this paper can generally be divided into two categories: In category one, the sites are located in the city, and in the other, the sites are located outside of the built-up area. In both cases the number of sites per scenario varies, and additionally the antenna height and site distance to the built-up area vary for the second category. The investigations are performed with a ray optical propagation model based on 3-D building data and a dynamic 3G network simulator. A mix of four services and a realistic spatial traffic distribution based on land usage is assumed. The performance of the scenarios, assessed by the evaluation of coverage and capacity, is examined together with the exposure. It is shown that network topologies with sites located only outside the city are not an adequate solution due to capacity constraints and coverage problems with high data services. A promising network topology is a reduced set of inner-city sites with higher order sectorization.

An increasing number of modern applications and services is based on the knowledge of the users actual position. Depending on the application a rough position estimate is sufficient, e. g. services in cellular networks that use the information about the users actual cell. Other applications, e. g. navigation systems use the GPS-System for accurate position finding. Beyond these outdoor applications a growing number of indoor applications requires position information. The previously mentioned methods for position finding (mobile cell, GPS) are not usable for these indoor applications. Within this paper we will present a system that relies on the simultaneous measurement of doppler signals at four different positions to obtain position and velocity of an unknown object. It is therefore suiteable for indoor usage, extendig already existing wireless infrastructure.

In this paper, we discuss the use of Discrete Multi Tone (DMT) modulation in the context of industrial telecontrol applications. We highlight the specific requirements and characteristics of the telecontrol settings and present methods to cope with the environmental challenges posed. It turns out that DMT is ideally suited for the tasks at hand. Further enhances enable our proposed system to provide superior connection stability even under the most adverse conditions.

This paper deals with the basic electrical properties of dual networks and with their application in broadband matched filter structures. Starting with the main characteristics and different realization methods of dual networks, a filter structure is presented, which is based on a combination of dual networks and which provides a broadband matched input and two decoupled output ports. This filter synthesis focuses on the design of high pass filters, which are suitable to be used as differentiating stages in electrical pulse generators as a part of the so-called pulse shaping network. In order to achieve a proper pulse shape and for the prevention of multiple reflections between the switching circuit and the differentiating network, a broadband matched filter is a basic requirement.

Increasing resolution and accuracy is an important issue in almost any type of radar sensor application. However, both resolution and accuracy are strongly related to the available signal bandwidth and energy that can be used. Nowadays, often several sensors operating in different frequency bands become available on a sensor platform. It is an attractive goal to use the potential of advanced signal modelling and optimization procedures by making proper use of information stemming from different frequency bands at the RF signal level. An important prerequisite for optimal use of signal energy is coherence between all contributing sensors. Coherent multi-sensor platforms are greatly expensive and are thus not available in general. This paper presents an approach for accurately estimating object radar responses using subband measurements at different RF frequencies. An exponential model approach allows to compensate for the lack of mutual coherence between independently operating sensors. Mutual coherence is recovered from the a-priori information that both sensors have common scattering centers in view. Minimizing the total squared deviation between measured data and a full-range exponential signal model leads to more accurate pole angles and pole magnitudes compared to single-band optimization. The model parameters (range and magnitude of point scatterers) after this full-range optimization process are also more accurate than the parameters obtained from a commonly used super-resolution procedure (root-MUSIC) applied to the non-coherent subband data.

This paper presents recent advances and future challenges of the application of different linear and nonlinear inversion algorithms in acoustics, electromagnetics, and elastodynamics. The presented material can be understood as an extension of our previous work on this topic. The inversion methods considered in this presentation vary from linear schemes, like the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) applied electromagnetics and the Synthetic Aperture Focussing Technique (SAFT) as its counterpart in ultrasonics, and the linearized Diffraction Tomography (DT), to nonlinear schemes, like the Contrast Source Inversion (CSI) combined with different regularization approaches. Inversion results of the above mentioned inversion schemes are presented and compared for instance for time-domain ultrasonic data from the Fraunhofer-Institute for Nondestructive Testing (IZFP, Saarbrücken, Germany). Convenient tools for nondestructive evaluation of solids can be electromagnetic and/or elastodynamic waves; since their governing equations, including acoustics, exhibit strong structural similarities, the same inversion concepts apply. In particular, the heuristic SAFT algorithm can be and has been utilized for all kinds of waves, once a scalar approximation can be justified. Relating SAFT to inverse scattering in terms of diffraction tomography, it turns out that linearization is the most stringent inherent approximation. A comparison of the inversion results using the linear time-domain inversion scheme SAFT and well tested nonlinear frequency-domain inversion schemes demonstrates the considerable potential to extend and improve the ultrasonic imaging technique SAFT while consulting the mathematics of wavefield inversion, yet, in particular if the underlying effort is considered, the relatively simple and effective SAFT algorithm works surprisingly well. Since SAFT is a widely accepted imaging tool in ultrasonic NDE it seems worthwhile to check its formal restrictions and assumptions whether they could be overcome and whether they would outperform the standard and original SAFT algorithm.

This paper shows the potential of MIMO in cellular systems, where small handheld devices are used for the terminals. A complete model of a MIMO communication link is used to integrate accurate antenna modelling into MIMO system simulations. All different effects of mutual coupling between closely spaced antennas are considered. The efficiency or power budget respectively of the antenna arrays in the terminals, which are influenced by mutual coupling effects, is taken into account. Capacity simulation results based on a channel obtained from ray-tracing simulations are shown with cellular phones with up to three Inverted-F antennas.

The field of susceptibility and hardening of electronic systems to transient threats has experienced a significant growth during the past ten years. Driven by the development in the area of non-lethal electromagnetic weapons it has become necessary to extend the classical set of transient threats, consisting of LEMP, ESD and NEMP, by a fast transient threat with an extreme bandwidth. The investigation of the susceptibility to those UWB threats, characterized by a bandwidth of more than a quarter of the center frequency, rise times of less than 200 ps and pulse durations in the ns regime, is of special interest. This paper presents an overview of current challenges of the hardening against UWB threats. It discusses recent research trends in transient susceptibility measurements, protection concepts and methods of analysis.

In modernen CMOS-Technologien werden die Verzögerungszeit, die Ausgangsflankensteilheit und der Querstrom eines Gatters sowohl durch die Lastkapazität als auch durch die Steilheit des Eingangssignals beeinflusst. Die heute verwendeten Technologiebibliotheken beinhalten Tabellenmodelle mit 25 oder mehr Stützpunkten dieser Abhängigkeiten, woraus durch Interpolation die benötigten Zwischenwerte berechnet werden. Bisherige Versuche, analytische Modelle abzuleiten beruhten darauf, den Querstrom zu vernachlässigen oder Transistorströme als stückweise linear anzunähern. Der hier gezeigte Ansatz beruht auf einer näherungsweisen Lösung der Differentialgleichung, die aus den beiden Transistorströmen und einer Lastkapazität besteht und damit das Schaltverhalten eines Inverters beschreibt. Mit wenigen Technologieparametern können daraus für einen beliebig dimensionierten Inverter die für eine Timing- und Verlustleistungsanalyse notwendigen Größen berechnet werden. Das Modell erreicht bei einem Vergleich zu Referenzwerten aus SPICE Simulationen eine Genauigkeit von typischerweise 5%.In modern CMOS-technologies the gate delay, output transition time and the short-circuit current depend on the capacitive load as well as on the input transition time. Today’s technology libraries use table models with 25 or more samples for these dependencies. Intermediate values have to be calculated through interpolation. Attempts to derive analytical models are based on neglecting the short-circuit current or approximating it by piecewise linear functions. The approach shown in this paper provides an approximate solution for the differential equation describing the dynamic behavor of an inverter circuit. It includes the influence of both transistor currents and a single load capacitance. The required values for timing and power analysis can be calculated with a small set of technology parameters for an arbitrary designed inverter. Compared to reference values extracted from SPICE simulations, the model achieves a typical precision of 5%.

In this paper, the Spectral Signature Analysis is presented as a concept for an integrable self-test system (Built-In Self-Test – BIST) for RF front-ends is presented. It is based on modelling the whole RF front-end (transmitter and receiver) on system level, on generating of a Spectral Signature and of evaluating of the Signature Response. Because of using multi-carrier signal as the test signature, the concept is especially useful for tests of linearity and frequency response of front-ends. Due to the presented method of signature response evaluation, this concept can be used for Built-In Self-Correction (BISC) at critical building blocks.

An ESD failure occurring inside the core circuitry known as “inverter failure" will be presented and analysed in this paper. The compact model utilised for this investigation is shortly presented. It will be shown that not only properties of the failed structure are relevant, but also surrounding circuitry. So the gate of an inverter will be connected during the simulations in diverse ways to VDD and VSS. The different possibilities of influence of pre drivers can be appraised in this way. In order to achieve a detailed understanding of the individual failure, it is necessary to include ambient circuitry as well as parasitics like resistors and capacitances.

This paper presents a CMOS bandgap reference that employs a curvature correction technique for compensating the nonlinear voltage temperature dependence of a diode connected BJT. The proposed circuit cancels the first and the second order terms in the VBE(T ) expansion by using the current of an autopolarizedWidlar source and a small correction current generated by a MOSFET biased in weak inversion. The voltage reference has been fabricated in a 0.35µm 3Metal/2Poly CMOS technology and the chip area is approximately 70µm × 110µm. The measured temperature coefficient is about 10.5 ppm/K over a temperature range of 10– 90°C while the power consumption is less than 1.4mW.
