Matrix Schubert varieties are the closures of the orbits of $B\times B$ acting on all $n\times n$ matrices, where $B$ is the group of invertible lower triangular matrices. Extending work of Fulton, Knutson and Miller identified a Gr\"obner basis for the prime ideals of these varieties. They also showed that the corresponding initial ideals are Stanley-Reisner ideals of shellable simplicial complexes, and derived a related primary decomposition in terms of reduced pipe dreams. These results lead to a geometric proof of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley formula for a Schubert polynomial, among many other applications. We define skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties to be the nonempty intersections of matrix Schubert varieties with the subspace of skew-symmetric matrices. In analogy with Knutson and Miller's work, we describe a natural generating set for the prime ideals of these varieties. We then compute a related Gr\"obner basis. Using these results, we identify a primary decomposition for the corresponding initial ideals involving certain fpf-involution pipe dreams. We show that these initial ideals are likewise the Stanley-Reisner ideals of shellable simplicial complexes. As an application, we give a geometric proof of an explicit generating function for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials. Let $S$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $I\subseteq S$ a homogeneous ideal containing a regular sequence of forms of degrees $d_1, \ldots, d_c$. In this paper we prove the Lex-plus-powers Conjecture when the field has characteristic 0 for all regular sequences such that $d_i \geq \sum_{j=1}^{i-1} (d_j-1)+1$ for each $i$; that is, we show that the Betti table of $I$ is bounded above by the Betti table of the lex-plus-powers ideal of $I$. As an application, when the characteristic is 0, we obtain bounds for the Betti numbers of any homogeneous ideal containing a regular sequence of known degrees, which are sharper than the previously known ones from the Bigatti-Hulett-Pardue Theorem., To appear in Advances in Mathematics

Let G be a finite p-subgroup of GL(V), where p = char(F), and V is finite-dimensional over the field F. Let S(V) be the symmetric algebra of V, S(V)^G the subring of G-invariants, and V* the F-dual space of V. The following presents our solution to the above question. Theorem A. Suppose dim(V)=3. Then S(V)^G is a polynomial ring if and only if G is generated by transvections. Theorem B. Suppose dim(V) > 3. Then S(V)^G is a polynomial ring if and only if: (1) S(V)^{G_U} is a polynomial ring for each subspace U of V* with dim(U)=2, where G_U = {g in G | g(u) = u, for all u in U}, and (2) S(V)^G is Cohen-Macaulay. We prove a Cohen-Macaulay version of a result by Avramov-Golod and Frankild-J{\o}rgensen about Gorenstein rings, showing that if a noetherian ring $A$ is Cohen-Macaulay, and $a_1,\dots,a_n$ is any sequence of elements in $A$, then the Koszul complex $K(A;a_1,\dots,a_n)$ is a Cohen-Macaulay DG-ring. We further generalize this result, showing that it also holds for commutative DG-rings. In the process of proving this, we develop a new technique to study the dimension theory of a noetherian ring $A$, by finding a Cohen-Macaulay DG-ring $B$ such that $\mathrm{H}^0(B) = A$, and using the Cohen-Macaulay structure of $B$ to deduce results about $A$. As application, we prove that if $f:X \to Y$ is a morphism of schemes, where $X$ is Cohen-Macaulay and $Y$ is nonsingular, then the homotopy fiber of $f$ at every point is Cohen-Macaulay. As another application, we generalize the miracle flatness theorem. On a smooth variety, Serre's intersection formula computes intersection multiplicities via an alternating sum of the lengths of Tor groups. When the variety is singular, the corresponding sum can be a divergent series. But there are alternate geometric approaches for assigning (often fractional) intersection multiplicities in some singular settings. Our motivating question comes from Fulton, who asks whether an analytic continuation of the divergent series from Serre's formula can be related to these fractional multiplicities. By applying work of Avramov and Buchweitz, we positively answer Fulton's question in the context of graded rings., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

Macaulay's Inverse System gives an effective method to construct Artinian Gorenstein k-algebras. To date a general structure for Gorenstein k-algebras of any dimension (and codimension) is not understood. In this paper we extend Macaulay's correspondence characterizing the submodules of the divided power ring in one-to-one correspondence with Gorenstein d-dimensional k-algebras. We discuss effective methods for constructing Gorenstein graded rings. Several examples illustrating our results are given., 19 pages, to appear in Advances in Mathematics

We define the Frobenius limit of a module over a ring of prime characteristic to be the limit of the normalized Frobenius direct images in a certain Grothendieck group. When a finite group acts on a polynomial ring, we calculate this limit for all the modules over the twisted group algebra that are free over the polynomial ring; we also calculate the Frobenius limit for the restriction of these to the ring of invariants. As an application, we generalize the description of the generalized $F$-signature of a ring of invariants by the second author and Nakajima to the modular case., 25 pages

We show for a ring R of weak global dimension at most one that there is a bijection between the smashing subcategories of its derived category and the equivalence classes of homological epimorphisms starting in R. If, moreover, R is commutative, we prove that the compactly generated localizing subcategories correspond precisely to flat epimorphisms. We also classify smashing localizations of the derived category of any valuation domain, and provide an easy criterion for the Telescope Conjecture (TC) for any commutative ring of weak global dimension at most one. We explore the classical Lech's inequality relating the Hilbert--Samuel multiplicity and colength of an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal in a Noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$. We prove optimal versions of Lech's inequality for sufficiently deep ideals in characteristic $p>0$, and we conjecture that they hold in all characteristics. Our main technical result shows that if $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ has characteristic $p>0$ and $\widehat{R}$ is reduced, equidimensional, and has an isolated singularity, then for any sufficiently deep $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal $I$, the colength and Hilbert--Kunz multiplicity of $I$ are sufficiently close to each other. We describe a general correspondence between injective (resp. projective) recollements of triangulated categories and injective (resp. projective) cotorsion pairs. This provides a model category description of these recollement situations. Our applications focus on displaying several recollements that glue together various full subcategories of K(R), the homotopy category of chain complexes of modules over a general ring R. When R is (left) Noetherian ring, these recollements involve complexes built from the Gorenstein injective modules. When R is a (left) coherent ring for which all flat modules have finite projective dimension we obtain the duals. These results extend to a general ring R by replacing the Gorenstein modules with the Gorenstein AC-modules introduced recently in the work of Bravo-Gillespie-Hovey. We also see that in any abelian category with enough injectives, the Gorenstein injective objects enjoy a maximality property in that they contain every other class making up the right half of an injective cotorsion pair., 45 pages. This study examines the finite $F$-representation type (abbr. FFRT) property of a two-dimensional normal graded ring $R$ in characteristic $p>0$, using notions from the theory of algebraic stacks. Given a graded ring $R$, we consider an orbifold curve $\mathfrak C$, which is a root stack over the smooth curve $C=\text{Proj} R$, such that $R$ is the section ring associated with a line bundle $L$ on $\mathfrak C$. The FFRT property of $R$ is then rephrased with respect to the Frobenius push-forwards $F^e_*(L^i)$ on the orbifold curve $\mathfrak C$. As a result, we see that if the singularity of $R$ is not log terminal, then $R$ has FFRT only in exceptional cases where the characteristic $p$ divides a weight of $\mathfrak C$., 25 pages, exposition on stacks added, to appear in Adv. Let $X \subseteq \mathbb{P}^r$ be a non-degenerate smooth projective variety of dimension $n$, codimension $e$, and degree $d$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In this paper, we first show that $\text{reg} (\mathcal{O}_X) \leq d-e$, and classify the extremal and the next to extremal cases. Our result reduces the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture for the smooth case to the problem finding a Castelnuovo-type bound for normality. It is worth noting that McCullough-Peeva recently constructed counterexamples to the regularity conjecture by showing that $\text{reg} (\mathcal{O}_X)$ is not even bounded above by any polynomial function of $d$ when $X$ is not smooth. For a normality bound in the smooth case, we establish that $\text{reg}(X) \leq n(d-2)+1$, which improves previous results obtained by Mumford, Bertram-Ein-Lazarsfeld, and Noma. Finally, by generalizing Mumford's method on double point divisors, we prove that $\text{reg}(X) \leq d-1+m$, where $m$ is an invariant arising from double point divisors associated to outer general projections. Using double point divisors associated to inner projection, we also obtain a slightly better bound for $\text{reg}(X)$ under suitable assumptions., Comment: 23 pages. Suppose that $R$ is an excellent local domain with maximal ideal $m_R$. The theory of multiplicities and mixed multiplicities of $m_R$-primary ideals extends to (possibly non Noetherian) filtrations of $R$ by $m_R$-primary ideals, and many of the classical theorems for $m_R$-primary ideals continue to hold for filtrations. The celebrated theorems involving inequalities continue to hold for filtrations, but the good conclusions that hold in the case of equality for $m_R$-primary ideals do not hold for filtrations. In this article, we consider multiplicities and mixed multiplicities of $R$ by $m_R$-primary divisorial filtrations. We show that some important theorems on equalities of multiplicities and mixed multiplicities of $m_R$-primary ideals, which are not true in general for filtrations, are true for divisorial filtrations. We prove that a theorem of Rees showing that if there is an inclusion of $m_R$-primary ideals $I\subset I'$ with the same multiplicity then $I$ and $I'$ have the same integral closure also holds for divisorial filtrations. This theorem does not hold for arbitrary filtrations. We show that the Teissier Rees Sharp Katz theorem on equality in the Minkowski inequality holds for divisorial filtrations in an excellent domain of dimension two. We also show that the mixed multiplicities of divisorial filtrations are anti-positive intersection products on a suitable normal scheme $X$ birationally dominating $R$, when $R$ is an algebraic local domain., 36 pages

In this paper, we answer a question of Dwyer, Greenlees, and Iyengar by proving a local ring $R$ is a complete intersection if and only if every complex of $R$-modules with finitely generated homology is proxy small. Moreover, we establish that a commutative noetherian ring $R$ is locally a complete intersection if and only if every complex of $R$-modules with finitely generated homology is virtually small., Comment: 14 pages

Let V be the Veronese cubic surface in P^9. We classify the projections of V to P^8 whose coordinate rings are Koszul. In particular we obtain a purely theoretical proof of the Koszulness of the pinched Veronese, a result obtained originally by Caviglia using filtrations, deformations and computer assisted computations. Suppose that k is a field of characteristic zero, X is an r by s matrix of indeterminates, where r \leq s, and R = k[X] is the polynomial ring over k in the entries of X. We study the local cohomology modules H^i_I(R), where I is the ideal of R generated by the maximal minors of X. We identify the indices i for which these modules vanish, compute H^i_I(R) at the highest nonvanishing index, i = r(s-r)+1, and characterize all nonzero ones as submodules of certain indecomposable injective modules. These results are consequences of more general theorems regarding linearly reductive groups acting on local cohomology modules of polynomial rings., Comment: 15 pages. Given a local domain ( R , m ) of prime characteristic that is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein ring, Huneke and Lyubeznik proved that there exists a module-finite extension domain S such that the induced map on local cohomology modules H m i ( R ) → H m i ( S ) is zero for each i dim R . We prove that the extension S may be chosen to be generically Galois, and analyze the Galois groups that arise.

We construct an invariant of t-structures on the derived category of a commutative noetherian ring. This invariant is complete when restricting to the category of complexes with finitely generated bounded homology, and also gives a classification of nullity classes with the same restriction. On the full derived category of Z we show that the class of distinct t-structures do not form a set.

We prove a theorem unifying three results from combinatorial homological and commutative algebra, characterizing the Koszul property for incidence algebras of posets and affine semigroup rings, and characterizing linear resolutions of squarefree monomial ideals. The characterization in the graded setting is via the Cohen-Macaulay property of certain posets or simplicial complexes, and in the more general nongraded setting, via the sequential Cohen-Macaulay property., 31 pages, 1 figure. We prove that a Cohen-Macaulay normal variety $X$ has Du Bois singularities if and only if $\pi_*\omega_{X'}(G) \simeq \omega_X$ for a log resolution $\pi: X' \to X$, where $G$ is the reduced exceptional divisor of $\pi$. Many basic theorems about Du Bois singularities become transparent using this characterization (including the fact that Cohen-Macaulay log canonical singularities are Du Bois). We also give a straightforward and self-contained proof that (generalizations of) semi-log-canonical singularities are Du Bois, in the Cohen-Macaulay case. We study (slope-)stability properties of syzygy bundles on a projective space P^N given by ideal generators of a homogeneous primary ideal. In particular we give a combinatorial criterion for a monomial ideal to have a semistable syzygy bundle. Restriction theorems for semistable bundles yield the same stability results on the generic complete intersection curve. From this we deduce a numerical formula for the tight closure of an ideal generated by monomials or by generic homogeneous elements in a generic two-dimensional complete intersection ring., This paper contains an appendix by Georg Hein: Semistability of the general syzygy bundle. Given a multiarrangement of hyperplanes we define a series by sums of the Hilbert series of the derivation modules of the multiarrangement. This series turns out to be a polynomial. Using this polynomial we define the characteristic polynomial of a multiarrangement which generalizes the characteristic polynomial of an arragnement. The characteristic polynomial of an arrangement is a combinatorial invariant, but this generalized characteristic polynomial is not. However, when the multiarrangement is free, we are able to prove the factorization theorem for the characteristic polynomial. The main result is a formula that relates `global' data to `local' data of a multiarrangement given by the coefficients of the respective characteristic polynomials. This result gives a new necessary condition for a multiarrangement to be free. Consequently it provides a simple method to show that a given multiarrangement is not free., 12 pages, 2 figures

For several important classes of manifolds acted on by the torus, the information about the action can be encoded combinatorially by a regular n-valent graph with vector labels on its edges, which we refer to as the torus graph. By analogy with the GKM-graphs, we introduce the notion of equivariant cohomology of a torus graph, and show that it is isomorphic to the face ring of the associated simplicial poset. This extends a series of previous results on the equivariant cohomology of torus manifolds. As a primary combinatorial application, we show that a simplicial poset is Cohen-Macaulay if its face ring is Cohen-Macaulay. This completes the algebraic characterisation of Cohen-Macaulay posets initiated by Stanley. Let R be a local Noetherian domain of positive characteristic. A theorem of Hochster and Huneke [M. Hochster, C. Huneke, Infinite integral extensions and big Cohen–Macaulay algebras, Ann. of Math. 135 (1992) 53–89] states that if R is excellent, then the absolute integral closure of R is a big Cohen–Macaulay algebra. We prove that if R is the homomorphic image of a Gorenstein local ring, then all the local cohomology (below the dimension) of such a ring maps to zero in a finite extension of the ring. As a result there follow an extension of the original result of Hochster and Huneke to the case in which R is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein local ring, and a considerably simpler proof of this result in the cases where the assumptions overlap, e.g., for complete Noetherian local domains.

We study local cohomology of rings of global sections of sheafs on the Alexandrov space of a partially ordered set. We give a criterion for a splitting of the local cohomology groups into summands determined by the cohomology of the poset and the local cohomology of the stalks. The face ring of a rational pointed fan can be considered as the ring of global sections of a flasque sheaf on the face poset of the fan. Thus we obtain a decomposition of the local cohomology of such face rings. Since the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex is the face ring of a rational pointed fan, our main result can be interpreted as a generalization of Hochster's decomposition of local cohomology of Stanley-Reisner rings., 24 pages; To appear in Adv. In this paper we take some classical ideas from commutative algebra, mostly ideas involving duality, and apply them in algebraic topology. To accomplish this we interpret properties of ordinary commutative rings in such a way that they can be extended to the more general rings that come up in homotopy theory. Amongst the rings we work with are the differential graded ring of cochains on a space, the differential graded ring of chains on the loop space, and various ring spectra, e.g., the Spanier-Whitehead duals of finite spectra or chromatic localizations of the sphere spectrum. Maybe the most important contribution of this paper is the conceptual framework, which allows us to view all of the following dualities: Poincare duality for manifolds, Gorenstein duality for commutative rings, Benson-Carlson duality for cohomology rings of finite groups, Poincare duality for groups, Gross-Hopkins duality in chromatic stable homotopy theory, as examples of a single phenomenon. Beyond setting up this framework, though, we prove some new results, both in algebra and topology, and give new proofs of a number of old results., Comment: 49 pages. The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a module gives a rough measure of its complexity. We bound the regularity of a module given a system of approximating modules whose regularities are known. Such approximations can arise naturally for modules constructed by inductive combinatorial means. Suppose that G is a linearly reductive group. We study the minimal free resolution of the invariant ring. If G is a finite linearly reductive group, then the ring of invariants is generated in degree at most |G|, the group order. An SI-sequence is a finite sequence of positive integers which is symmetric, unimodal and satisfies a certain growth condition. These are known to correspond precisely to the possible Hilbert functions of Artinian Gorenstein algebras with the Weak Lefschetz Property, a property shared by most Artinian Gorenstein algebras. Starting with an arbitrary SI-sequence, we construct a reduced, arithmetically Gorenstein configuration $G$ of linear varieties of arbitrary dimension whose Artinian reduction has the given SI-sequence as Hilbert function and has the Weak Lefschetz Property. Furthermore, we show that $G$ has maximal graded Betti numbers among all arithmetically Gorenstein subschemes of projective space whose Artinian reduction has the Weak Lefschetz Property and the given Hilbert function. As an application we show that over a field of characteristic zero every set of simplicial polytopes with fixed $h$-vector contains a polytope with maximal graded Betti numbers., 49 pages, LaTeX

We develop the algebraic polynomial theory for "supertropical algebra," as initiated earlier over the real numbers by the first author. The main innovation there was the introduction of "ghost elements," which also play the key role in our structure theory. Here, we work somewhat more generally over an ordered monoid, and develop a theory which contains the analogs of several basic theorems of classical commutative algebra. This structure enables one to develop a Zariski-type algebraic geometric approach to tropical geometry, viewing tropical varieties as sets of roots of (supertropical) polynomials, leading to an analog of the Hilbert Nullstellensatz. Particular attention is paid to factorization of polynomials. In one indeterminate, any polynomial can be factored into linear and quadratic factors, and unique factorization holds in a certain sense. On the other hand, the failure of unique factorization in several indeterminates is explained by geometric phenomena described in the paper., Comment: 48 pages

We show that high Veronese subrings of any commutative graded ring have a Grobner basis with all relations of degree 2. (The d-th Veronese subring of a ring A_0 + A_1 + A_2 + ... is the ring A_0 + A_d + A_{2d} + ...; ``high'' means we take d sufficiently large, say at least half the regularity of the ideal defining the original ring.) We describe some basic facts about the weak subintegral closure of ideals in both the algebraic and complex-analytic settings. We focus on the analogy between results on the integral closure of ideals and modules and the weak subintegral closure of an ideal. We start by giving a geometric interpretation of the Reid-Roberts-Singh criterion for when an element is weakly subintegral over a subring. We give new characterizations of the weak subintegral closure of an ideal. We associate with an ideal $I$ of a ring $A$ an ideal $I_>$, which consists of all elements of $A$ such that $v(a)>v(I)$, for all Rees valuations $v$ of $I$. The ideal $I_>$ plays an important role in conditions from stratification theory such as Whitney's condition A and Thom's condition $A_f$ and is contained in every reduction of $I$. We close with a valuative criterion for when an element is in the weak subintegral closure of an ideal. We give, for every finite group G, a combinatorial description of the ring of G-Witt vectors on a polynomial algebra over the integers. The socle of a graded Buchsbaum module is studied and is related to its local cohomology modules. This algebraic result is then applied to face enumeration of Buchsbaum simplicial complexes and posets. In particular, new necessary conditions on face numbers and Betti numbers of such complexes and posets are established. These conditions are used to settle in the affirmative K\"uhnel's conjecture for the maximum value of the Euler characteristic of a $2k$-dimensional simplicial manifold on $n$ vertices as well as Kalai's conjecture providing a lower bound on the number of edges of a simplicial manifold in terms of its dimension, number of vertices, and the first Betti number., Comment: 27 pages

Let $X$ be a projective scheme over a field $k$ and let $A$ be the local ring at the vertex of the affine cone of $X$ under some embedding $X\hookrightarrow\mathbb{P}^n_k$. We study Auslander correspondence from the viewpoint of higher dimensional Auslander-Reiten theory on maximal orthogonal subcategories. We give homological characterizations of Auslander algebras, especially an answer to a question of M. Artin.
