Our main purpose in this paper is to establish the existence and nonexistence of extremal functions (also known as maximizers) and symmetry of extremals for several Trudinger-Moser type inequalities on the entire space R n , including both the critical and subcritical Trudinger-Moser inequalities (see Theorems 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5). Most of earlier works on existence of maximizers in the literature rely on the complicated blow-up analysis of PDEs for the associated Euler-Lagrange equations of the corresponding Moser functionals. The new approaches developed in this paper are using the identities and relationship between the supremums of the subcritical Trudinger-Moser inequalities and the critical ones established by the same authors in [25] , combining with the continuity of the supremum function that is observed for the first time in the literature. These allow us to establish the existence and nonexistence of the maximizers for the Trudinger-Moser inequalities in different ranges of the parameters (including those inequalities with the exact growth). This method is considerably simpler and also allows us to study the symmetry problem of the extremal functions and prove that the extremal functions for the subcritical singular Truddinger-Moser inequalities are symmetric. Moreover, we will be able to calculate the exact values of the supremums of the Trudinger-Moser type in certain cases. These appear to be the first results in this direction.

We introduce topological notions of normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety and establish that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the desired geometric notions. Our proposed concept of equivalence of associated topological and geometric notions fits ideally with important constructions in symplectic topology. This partially answers Gromov's question on the feasibility of defining singular symplectic (sub)varieties and lays foundation for rich developments in the future. In subsequent papers, we establish a smoothability criterion for symplectic normal crossings varieties, in the process providing the multifold symplectic sum envisioned by Gromov, and introduce symplectic analogues of logarithmic structures in the context of normal crossings symplectic divisors., Comment: 65 pages, 4 figures; a number of typos fixed; the exposition has been significantly revised, fixing a technical error in the non-compact case in the process; this paper is now restricted to the simple normal crossings case; the arbitrary normal crossings case will be detailed in a followup paper

This paper is the second part of our comprehensive study on the structure of the solutions for the following Chern–Simons–Higgs equation: (0.1) { Δ u + 1 e 2 e u ( 1 − e u ) = 4 π ∑ j = 1 N δ p j , in Ω , u is doubly periodic on ∂ Ω , where Ω is a parallelogram in R 2 and e > 0 is a small parameter. In part 1 [29] , we proved the non-coexistence of different bubbles in the bubbling solutions and obtained an existence result for the Chern–Simons type bubbling solutions under some nearly necessary conditions. Mean field type bubbling solutions for (0.1) have been constructed in [27] . In this paper, we shall study two other important issues for the mean field type bubbling solutions: the necessary conditions for the existence and the local uniqueness. The results in this paper lay the foundation to find the exact number of solutions for (0.1) .

Quasi-elliptic cohomology is a variant of elliptic cohomology theories. It is the orbifold K-theory of a space of constant loops. For global quotient orbifolds, it can be expressed in terms of equivariant K-theories. Thus, the constructions on it can be made in a neat way. This theory reflects the geometric nature of the Tate curve. In this paper we provide a systematic introduction of its construction and definition., Comment: Final Version. 26 pages. Decomposition spaces are simplicial $\infty$-groupoids subject to a certain exactness condition, needed to induce a coalgebra structure on the space of arrows. Conservative ULF functors (CULF) between decomposition spaces induce coalgebra homomorphisms. Suitable added finiteness conditions define the notion of M\"obius decomposition space, a far-reaching generalisation of the notion of M\"obius category of Leroux. In this paper, we show that the Lawvere-Menni Hopf algebra of M\"obius intervals, which contains the universal M\"obius function (but is not induced by a M\"obius category), can be realised as the homotopy cardinality of a M\"obius decomposition space $U$ of all M\"obius intervals, and that in a certain sense $U$ is universal for M\"obius decomposition spaces and CULF functors., Comment: 35 pages. In this paper, we describe a surprising link between the theory of the Goldman–Turaev Lie bialgebra on surfaces of genus zero and the Kashiwara–Vergne (KV) problem in Lie theory. Let Σ be an oriented 2-dimensional manifold with non-empty boundary and K a field of characteristic zero. The Goldman–Turaev Lie bialgebra is defined by the Goldman bracket { − , − } and Turaev cobracket δ on the K -span of homotopy classes of free loops on Σ. Applying an expansion θ : K π → K 〈 x 1 , … , x n 〉 yields an algebraic description of the operations { − , − } and δ in terms of non-commutative variables x 1 , … , x n . If Σ is a surface of genus g = 0 the lowest degree parts { − , − } − 1 and δ − 1 are canonically defined (and independent of θ). They define a Lie bialgebra structure on the space of cyclic words which was introduced and studied by Schedler [31] . It was conjectured by the second and the third authors that one can define an expansion θ such that { − , − } = { − , − } − 1 and δ = δ − 1 . The main result of this paper states that for surfaces of genus zero constructing such an expansion is essentially equivalent to the KV problem. In [24] , Massuyeau constructed such expansions using the Kontsevich integral. In order to prove this result, we show that the Turaev cobracket δ can be constructed in terms of the double bracket (upgrading the Goldman bracket) and the non-commutative divergence cocycle which plays the central role in the KV theory. Among other things, this observation gives a new topological interpretation of the KV problem and allows to extend it to surfaces with arbitrary number of boundary components (and of arbitrary genus, see [2] ).

Dolgachev surfaces are simply connected minimal elliptic surfaces with $p_g=q=0$ and of Kodaira dimension 1. These surfaces were constructed by logarithmic transformations of rational elliptic surfaces. In this paper, we explain the construction of Dolgachev surfaces via $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein smoothing of singular rational surfaces with two cyclic quotient singularities. This construction is based on the paper by Lee-Park. Also, some exceptional bundles on Dolgachev surfaces associated with $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein smoothing are constructed based on the idea of Hacking. In the case if Dolgachev surfaces were of type $(2,3)$, we describe the Picard group and present an exceptional collection of maximal length. Finally, we prove that the presented exceptional collection is not full, hence there exist a nontrivial phantom category in the derived category., Comment: 35 pages; 3 figures; exposition improved; Adv. This paper considers the problem of establishing L p -improving inequalities for Radon-like operators in intermediate dimensions (i.e., for averages overs submanifolds which are neither curves nor hypersurfaces). Due to limitations in existing approaches, previous results in this regime are comparatively sparse and tend to require special numerical relationships between the dimension n of the ambient space and the dimension k of the submanifolds. This paper develops a new approach to this problem based on a continuum version of the Kakeya-Brascamp-Lieb inequality, established by Zhang [28] and extended by Zorin-Kranich [29] , and on recent results for geometric nonconcentration inequalities [11] . As an initial application of this new approach, this paper establishes sharp restricted strong type L p -improving inequalities for certain model quadratic submanifolds in the range k n ≤ 2 k .

We present a covering conjecture that we expect to be true below superstrong cardinals. We then show that the conjecture is true in hod mice. This work is a continuation of the work that started in Covering with Universally Baire Functions Advances in Mathematics, and the main conjecture of the current paper is a revision of the UB Covering Conjecture of the aforementioned paper.

Let $G$ be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field and let $W$ be its Weyl group. In a series of papers, Lusztig introduced a map from the set $[W]$ of conjugacy classes of $W$ to the set $[G_u]$ of unipotent classes of $G$. This map, when restricted to the set of elliptic conjugacy classes $[W_e]$ of $W$, is injective. In this paper, we show that Lusztig's map $[W_e] \to [G_u]$ is order-reversing, with respect to the natural partial order on $[W_e]$ arising from combinatorics and the natural partial order on $[G_u]$ arising from geometry., Comment: 25 pages

In a recent paper [5] S. Solecki proved a finite self-dual Ramsey theorem that extends simultaneously the classical finite Ramsey theorem [4] and the Graham–Rothschild theorem [2] . In this paper we prove the corresponding infinite dimensional version of the self-dual theorem. As a consequence, we extend the classical infinite Ramsey theorem [4] and the Carlson–Simpson theorem [1] .

Let E be an elliptic curve defined over an algebraically closed field k whose characteristic is not 2 or 3. Let τ be a translation automorphism of E that is not of order 2. In a previous paper we studied an algebra A = A ( E , τ ) that depends on this data: A ( E , τ ) = ( S ( E , τ ) ⊗ M 2 ( k ) ) Γ where S ( E , τ ) is the 4-dimensional Sklyanin algebra associated to ( E , τ ) , M 2 ( k ) is the ring of 2 × 2 matrices over k, and Γ is ( Z / 2 ) × ( Z / 2 ) acting in a particular way as automorphisms of S and M 2 ( k ) . The action of Γ on S is compatible with the translation action of the 2-torsion subgroup E [ 2 ] on E. Following the ideas and results in papers of Artin–Tate–Van den Bergh, Smith–Stafford, and Levasseur–Smith, this paper examines the line modules, point modules, and fat point modules, over A, and their incidence relations. The right context for the results is non-commutative algebraic geometry: we view A as a homogeneous coordinate ring of a non-commutative analogue of P 3 that we denote by Proj n c ( A ) . Point modules and fat point modules determine “points” in Proj n c ( A ) . Line modules determine “lines” in Proj n c ( A ) . Line modules for A are in bijection with certain lines in P ( A 1 ⁎ ) ≅ P 3 and therefore correspond to the closed points of a certain subscheme L of the Grassmannian G ( 1 , 3 ) . Shelton–Vancliff call L the line scheme for A. We show that L is the union of 7 reduced and irreducible components, 3 quartic elliptic space curves and 4 plane conics in the ambient Plucker P 5 , and that deg ⁡ ( L ) = 20 . The union of the lines corresponding to the points on each elliptic curve is an elliptic scroll in P ( A 1 ⁎ ) . Thus, the lines on that elliptic scroll are in natural bijection with a corresponding family of line modules for A.

This is the second article of the two papers, in which we investigate the holomorphic and formal flattening problem of a non-degenerate CR singular point of a codimension two real submanifold in C n with n ≥ 3 . The problem is motivated from the study of the complex Plateau problem that looks for the Levi-flat hypersurface bounded by a given real submanifold and by the classical complex analysis problem of finding the local hull of holomorphy of a real submanifold in a complex space. The present article is focused on non-degenerate flat CR singular points with at least one non-parabolic Bishop invariant. We will solve the formal flattening problem in this setting. The results in this paper and those in [23] are taken from our earlier arxiv post [22] . We split [22] into two independent articles to avoid it being too long.

In this paper we study the representation theory of filtered algebras with commutative associated graded whose spectrum has finitely many symplectic leaves. Examples are provided by the algebras of global sections of quantizations of symplectic resolutions, quantum Hamiltonian reductions, and spherical symplectic reflection algebras. We introduce the notion of holonomic modules for such algebras. We show that, provided the algebraic fundamental groups of all leaves are finite, the generalized Bernstein inequality holds for the simple modules and turns into equality for holonomic simples. Under the same finiteness assumption, we prove that the associated variety of a simple holonomic module is equi-dimensional. We also prove that, if the regular bimodule has finite length, then any holonomic module has finite length. This allows one to reduce the Bernstein inequality for arbitrary modules to simple ones. We prove that the regular bimodule has finite length for the global sections of quantizations of symplectic resolutions, for quantum Hamiltonian reductions and for Rational Cherednik algebras. The paper contains a joint appendix by the author and Etingof that motivates the definition of a holonomic module in the case of global sections of a quantization of a symplectic resolution.

This paper is devoted to the study of some fundamental problems on modulus and extremal length of curve families, capacity, and n-harmonic functions in the Euclidean space R n . One of the main goals is to establish the existence, uniqueness, and boundary behavior of the extremal function for the conformal capacity cap ( A , B ; Ω ) of a capacitor in R n . This generalizes some well known results and has its own interests in geometric function theory and potential theory. It is also used as a major ingredient in this paper to establish a sharp upper bound for the quasiextremal distance (or QED) constant M ( Ω ) of a domain in terms of its local boundary quasiconformal reflection constant H ( Ω ) , a bound conjectured by Shen in the plane. Along the way, several interesting results are established for modulus and extremal length. One of them is a decomposition theorem for the extremal length λ ( A , B ; Ω ) of the curve family joining two disjoint continua A and B in a domain Ω.

In this paper, we prove that the algebra of an \'etale groupoid with totally disconnected unit space has a simple algebra over a field if and only if the groupoid is minimal and effective and the only function of the algebra that vanishes on every open subset is the null function. Previous work on the subject required the groupoid to be also topologically principal in the non-Hausdorff case, but we do not. Furthermore, we provide the first examples of minimal and effective but not topologically principal \'etale groupoids with totally disconnected unit spaces. Our examples come from self-similar group actions of uncountable groups. More generally, we show that the essential algebra of an \'etale groupoid (the quotient by the ideal of functions vanishing on every open set), is simple if and only if the groupoid is minimal and topologically free, generalizing to the algebraic setting a recent result for essential $C^*$-algebras. The main application of our work is to provide a description of the simple contracted inverse semigroup algebras, thereby answering a question of Munn from the seventies. Using Galois descent, we show that simplicity of \'etale groupoid and inverse semigroup algebras depends only on the characteristic of the field and can be lifted from positive characteristic to characteristic $0$. We also provide examples of inverse semigroups and \'etale groupoids with simple algebras outside of a prescribed set of prime characteristics., Comment: Revisions after a referee report. We define the essential algebra of an ample groupoid as the quotient of the Steinberg algebra by its ideal of singular functions and we prove that the essential algebra is simple if and only if the groupoid is minimal and topologically free. When the singular ideal vanishes, one recovers the simplicity result of the previous version of the paper

In this paper we formulate and prove a general theorem of stability of exactness properties under the pro-completion, which unifies several such theorems in the literature and gives many more. The theorem depends on a formal approach to exactness properties proposed in this paper, which is based on the theory of sketches. Our stability theorem has applications in proving theorems that establish links between exactness properties, as well as in establishing embedding (representation) theorems for classes of categories defined by exactness properties.

This paper focuses on the 3D incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations with mixed partial dissipation and magnetic diffusion. Our main result assesses the global stability of perturbations near the steady solution given by a background magnetic field. The stability problem on the MHD equations with partial or no dissipation has attracted considerable interests recently and there are substantial developments. The new stability result presented here is among the very few stability conclusions currently available for ideal or partially dissipated MHD equations. As a special consequence of the techniques introduced in this paper, we obtain the small data global well-posedness for the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations without vertical dissipation., Comment: Submitted to Advances in Mathematics on December 28, 2018

Let q be a prime, P ⩾ 1 and let N q ( P ) denote the number of rational primes p ⩽ P that split in the imaginary quadratic field Q ( − q ) . The first part of this paper establishes various unconditional and conditional (under existence of a Siegel zero) lower bounds for N q ( P ) in the range q 1 / 4 + e ⩽ P ⩽ q , for any fixed e > 0 . This improves upon what is implied by work of Pollack and Benli–Pollack. The second part of this paper is dedicated to proving an estimate for a bilinear form involving Weyl sums for modular square roots (equivalently Salie sums). Our estimate has a power saving in the so-called Polya–Vinogradov range, and our methods involve studying an additive energy coming from quadratic residues in F q . This bilinear form is inspired by the recent automorphic motivation: the second moment for twisted L-functions attached to Kohnen newforms has recently been computed by the first and fourth authors. So the third part of this paper links the above two directions together and outlines the arithmetic applications of this bilinear form. These include the equidistribution of quadratic roots of primes, products of primes, and relaxations of a conjecture of Erdős–Odlyzko–Sarkozy.

In this paper, we prove that the quantum toroidal algebra of gl_n is isomorphic to the double shuffle algebra of Feigin and Odesskii for the cyclic quiver. If $M$ is a finite volume complete hyperbolic $3$-manifold, the quantity $\mathcal A_1(M)$ is defined as the infimum of the areas of closed minimal surfaces in $M$. In this paper we study the continuity property of the functional $\mathcal A_1$ with respect to the geometric convergence of hyperbolic manifolds. We prove that it is lower semi-continuous and even continuous if $\mathcal A_1(M)$ is realized by a minimal surface satisfying some hypotheses. Understanding the interaction between minimal surfaces and short geodesics in $M$ is the main theme of this paper, Comment: 35 pages, 4 figures

The purpose of this paper is to study the local zeta integrals of Friedberg-Jacquet at complex place and to establish similar results to the recent work [4] joint with C. Chen and D. Jiang. In this paper, we will (1) give a necessary and sufficient condition on an irreducible essentially tempered cohomological representation π of GL 2 n ( C ) with a non-zero Shalika model; (2) construct a new twisted linear period Λ s , χ and give a different expression of the linear model for π; (3) give a necessary and sufficient condition on the character χ such that there exists a uniform cohomological test vector v ∈ V π (which we construct explicitly) for Λ s , χ . As a consequence, we obtain the non-vanishing of local Friedberg-Jacquet integral at complex place. All of the above are essential preparations for attacking a global period relation problem in the forthcoming paper ( [11] ).

Markov numbers are integers that appear in the solution triples of the Diophantine equation, $x^2+y^2+z^2=3xyz$, called the Markov equation. A classical topic in number theory, these numbers are related to many areas of mathematics such as combinatorics, hyperbolic geometry, approximation theory and cluster algebras. There is a natural map from the rational numbers between zero and one to the Markov numbers. In this paper, we prove two conjectures seen in Martin Aigner's book, Markov's theorem and 100 years of the uniqueness conjecture, that determine an ordering on subsets of the Markov numbers based on their corresponding rational. The proof relies on a relationship between Markov numbers and continuant polynomials which originates in Frobenius' 1913 paper., 16 pages

Though much progress has been made with respect to the existence of extremals of the critical first order Trudinger-Moser inequalities in W 1 , n ( R n ) and higher order Adams inequalities on finite domain Ω ⊂ R n , whether there exists an extremal function for the critical higher order Adams inequalities on the entire space R n still remains open. The current paper represents the first attempt in this direction by considering the critical second order Adams inequality in the entire space R 4 . The classical blow-up procedure cannot apply to solving the existence of critical Adams type inequality because of the absence of the Polya-Szego type inequality. In this paper, we develop some new ideas and approaches based on a sharp Fourier rearrangement principle (see [31] ), sharp constants of the higher-order Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities and optimal poly-harmonic truncations to study the existence and nonexistence of the maximizers for the Adams inequalities in R 4 of the form S ( α ) = sup ‖ u ‖ H 2 = 1 ⁡ ∫ R 4 ( exp ⁡ ( 32 π 2 | u | 2 ) − 1 − α | u | 2 ) d x , where α ∈ ( − ∞ , 32 π 2 ) . We establish the existence of the threshold α ⁎ , where α ⁎ ≥ ( 32 π 2 ) 2 B 2 2 and B 2 ≥ 1 24 π 2 , such that S ( α ) is attained if 32 π 2 − α α ⁎ , and is not attained if 32 π 2 − α > α ⁎ . This phenomenon has not been observed before even in the case of first order Trudinger-Moser inequality. Therefore, we also establish the existence and non-existence of an extremal function for the Trudinger-Moser inequality on R 2 . Furthermore, the symmetry of the extremal functions can also be deduced through the Fourier rearrangement principle.

The recent work of George Andrews and Mircea Merca on the truncated version of Euler's pentagonal number theorem has opened up a new study on truncated theta series. Since then several papers on the topic have followed. The main purpose of this paper is to generalize the study to Hecke-Rogers type double series, which are associated with some interesting partition functions. Our proofs heavily rely on a formula from the work of Zhi-Guo Liu on the q-partial differential equations and q-series.

Motivated by the works of Liu, we provide a unified approach to find Appell-Lerch series and Hecke-type series representations for mock theta functions. We establish a number of parameterized identities with two parameters $a$ and $b$. Specializing the choices of $(a,b)$, we not only give various known and new representations for the mock theta functions of orders 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8, but also present many other interesting identities. We find that some mock theta functions of different orders are related to each other, in the sense that their representations can be deduced from the same $(a,b)$-parameterized identity. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of false Appell-Lerch series. We then express the Appell-Lerch series, false Appell-Lerch series and Hecke-type series in this paper using the building blocks $m(x,q,z)$ and $f_{a,b,c}(x,y,q)$ introduced by Hickerson and Mortenson, as well as $\overline{m}(x,q,z)$ and $\overline{f}_{a,b,c}(x,y,q)$ introduced in this paper. Let $X \subseteq \mathbb{P}^r$ be a non-degenerate smooth projective variety of dimension $n$, codimension $e$, and degree $d$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In this paper, we first show that $\text{reg} (\mathcal{O}_X) \leq d-e$, and classify the extremal and the next to extremal cases. Our result reduces the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture for the smooth case to the problem finding a Castelnuovo-type bound for normality. It is worth noting that McCullough-Peeva recently constructed counterexamples to the regularity conjecture by showing that $\text{reg} (\mathcal{O}_X)$ is not even bounded above by any polynomial function of $d$ when $X$ is not smooth. For a normality bound in the smooth case, we establish that $\text{reg}(X) \leq n(d-2)+1$, which improves previous results obtained by Mumford, Bertram-Ein-Lazarsfeld, and Noma. Finally, by generalizing Mumford's method on double point divisors, we prove that $\text{reg}(X) \leq d-1+m$, where $m$ is an invariant arising from double point divisors associated to outer general projections. Using double point divisors associated to inner projection, we also obtain a slightly better bound for $\text{reg}(X)$ under suitable assumptions., Comment: 23 pages. In this paper, given an integral domain U, we investigate the main properties of a relation ← m o d which is based on the interrelation between subdomains of U and finitely generated unitary submodules of U. We shall characterize it in terms of a second relation ≺ ⋄ between n-tuples ( u 1 , … , u n ) of elements of U and subdomains D of U defined by the vanishing in ( u 1 , … , u n ) of some polynomial p ( Z 1 , … , Z n ) belonging to a specific subset of the polynomial ring in several variables D [ Z 1 , … , Z n ] . Such an equivalence shall be used in order to introduce three specific collections of subdomains X U , B U and P U , whose algebraic properties present a close connection with geometrical and combinatorial properties induced by ← m o d . On the other hand, the characterization of the subdomains of X U leads to the more general problem of finding a map Ψ associating with a subdomain D of U a collection Ψ ( D ) of subdomains of K U such that the intersection of some or of any member of Ψ ( D ) gives D. In this perspective, in the present paper we shall study two further collections of subdomains of U, denoted respectively by E U and L U , whose main properties are related to those of the families P U and B U . Finally, our investigation of all the aforementioned subdomain families shall be also related to the study of pairs ( e , ξ ) , where e ∈ U ∖ { 0 } and ξ is an idempotent ring endomorphism of U whose kernel agrees with the ideal of U generated by e. We shall exhibit several results concerning the membership of ξ ( U ) and of ξ ( U ) [ e ] to the above subdomain families.

In this paper we study the moduli spaces Simp n m of degree n + 1 morphisms A K 1 → A K 1 with “ramification length Simp n m is a Zariski open subset of the space of degree n + 1 polynomials over K up to A u t ( A K 1 ) . It is, in a way, orthogonal to the many papers about polynomials with prescribed zeroes- here we are prescribing, instead, the ramification data. Exploiting the topological properties of the poset that encodes the ramification behavior, we use a sheaf-theoretic argument to compute H ⁎ ( Simp n m ( C ) ; Q ) as well as the etale cohomology H e ´ t ⁎ ( Simp n m / K ; Q l ) for c h a r K = 0 or c h a r K > n + 1 , when n and m are such that n ≥ 3 m . As a by-product we obtain that H ⁎ ( Simp n m ( C ) ; Q ) is independent of n, thus implying rational cohomological stability. When c h a r K > 0 our methods compute H e ´ t ⁎ ( Simp n m ; Q l ) provided c h a r K > n + 1 and show that the etale cohomology groups in positive characteristics do not stabilize.

We show that there is the same number of ( n , l ) -alternating sign trapezoids as there is of column strict shifted plane partitions of class l − 1 with at most n parts in the top row, thereby proving a result that was conjectured independently by Behrend and Aigner. The first objects generalize alternating sign triangles, which have recently been introduced by Ayyer, Behrend and the author who showed that they are counted by the same formula as alternating sign matrices. Column strict shifted plane partitions of a fixed class were introduced in a slightly different form by Andrews, and they essentially generalize descending plane partitions. They also correspond to cyclically symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a triangular hole in the center. In addition, we also provide three statistics on each class of objects and show that their joint distribution is the same. We prove our result by employing a constant term approach that is based on the author's operator formula for monotone triangles. This paper complements a forthcoming paper of Behrend and the author, where the six-vertex model approach is used to show equinumeracy as well as generalizations involving statistics that are different from those considered in the present paper.

We prove a version of the Deligne conjecture for $n$-fold monoidal abelian categories $A$ over a field $k$ of characteristic 0, assuming some compatibility and non-degeneracy conditions for $A$. The output of our construction is a weak Leinster $(n,1)$-algebra over $k$, a relaxed version of the concept of Leinster $n$-algebra in $Alg(k)$. The difference between the Leinster original definition and our relaxed one is apparent when $n>1$, for $n=1$ both concepts coincide. We believe that there exists a functor from weak Leinster $(n,1)$-algebras over $k$ to $C(E_{n+1},k)$-algebras, well-defined when $k=\mathbb{Q}$, and preserving weak equivalences. For the case $n=1$ such a functor is constructed in [Sh4] by elementary simplicial methods, providing (together with this paper) a complete solution for 1-monoidal abelian categories. Our approach to Deligne conjecture is divided into two parts. The first part, completed in the present paper, provides a construction of a weak Leinster $(n,1)$-algebra over $k$, out of an $n$-fold monoidal $k$-linear abelian category (provided the compatibility and non-degeneracy condition are fulfilled). The second part (still open for $n>1$) is a passage from weak Leinster $(n,1)$-algebras to $C(E_{n+1},k)$-algebras. As an application, we prove that the Gerstenhaber-Schack complex of a Hopf algebra over a field $k$ of characteristic 0 admits a structure of a weak Leinster (2,1)-algebra over $k$ extending the Yoneda structure. This is the first of a series of papers where we develop a theory of total positivity for loop groups. In this paper, we completely describe the totally nonnegative part of the polynomial loop group GL_n(\R[t,t^{-1}]), and for the formal loop group GL_n(\R((t))) we describe the totally nonnegative points which are not totally positive. Furthermore, we make the connection with networks on the cylinder. Our approach involves the introduction of distinguished generators, called whirls and curls, and we describe the commutation relations amongst them. These matrices play the same role as the poles and zeroes of the Edrei-Thoma theorem classifying totally positive functions (corresponding to our case n=1). We give a solution to the ``factorization problem'' using limits of ratios of minors. This is in a similar spirit to the Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky Chamber Ansatz where ratios of minors are used. A birational symmetric group action arising in the commutation relation of curls appeared previously in Noumi-Yamada's study of discrete Painlev\'{e} dynamical systems and Berenstein-Kazhdan's study of geometric crystals., Comment: 49 pages, 7 figures

This note is a follow-up on the paper [A. Borel, G. Harder, Existence of discrete cocompact subgroups of reductive groups over local fields, J. Reine Angew. Math. 298 (1978) 53–64] of A. Borel and G. Harder in which they proved the existence of a cocompact lattice in the group of rational points of a connected semi-simple algebraic group over a local field of characteristic zero by constructing an appropriate form of the semi-simple group over a number field and considering a suitable S-arithmetic subgroup. Some years ago A. Lubotzky initiated a program to study the subgroup growth of arithmetic subgroups, the current stage of which focuses on “counting” (more precisely, determining the asymptotics of) the number of lattices of bounded covolume (the finiteness of this number was established in [A. Borel, G. Prasad, Finiteness theorems for discrete subgroups of bounded covolume in semi-simple groups, Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 69 (1989) 119–171; Addendum: Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 71 (1990) 173–177] using the formula for the covolume developed in [G. Prasad, Volumes of S-arithmetic quotients of semi-simple groups, Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 69 (1989) 91–117]). Work on this program led M. Belolipetsky and A. Lubotzky to ask questions about the existence of isotropic forms of semi-simple groups over number fields with prescribed local behavior. In this paper we will answer these questions. A question of similar nature also arose in the work [D. Morris, Real representations of semisimple Lie algebras have Q-forms, in: Proc. Internat. Conf. on Algebraic Groups and Arithmetic, December 17–22, 2001, TIFR, Mumbai, 2001, pp. 469–490] of D. Morris (Witte) on a completely different topic. We will answer that question too.

One of the algebraic structures that has emerged recently in the study of the operator product expansions of chiral fields in conformal field theory is that of a Lie conformal algebra. A Lie pseudoalgebra is a generalization of the notion of a Lie conformal algebra for which C [ ∂ ] is replaced by the universal enveloping algebra H of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra. The finite (i.e., finitely generated over H ) simple Lie pseudoalgebras were classified in our previous work (Bakalov et al., 2001) [2] . The present paper is the second in our series on representation theory of simple Lie pseudoalgebras. In the first paper we showed that any finite irreducible module over a simple Lie pseudoalgebra of type W or S is either an irreducible tensor module or the kernel of the differential in a member of the pseudo de Rham complex. In the present paper we establish a similar result for Lie pseudoalgebras of type K , with the pseudo de Rham complex replaced by a certain reduction called the contact pseudo de Rham complex. This reduction in the context of contact geometry was discovered by Rumin.

In this paper, we first study generalizations of Fujita vanishing theorems for q-ample divisors. We then apply them to study positivity of subvarieties with nef normal bundle in the sense of intersection theory. After Ottem's work on ample subschemes, we introduce the notion of a nef subscheme, which generalizes the notion of a subvariety with nef normal bundle. We show that restriction of a pseudoeffective (resp. big) divisor to a nef subvariety is pseudoeffective (resp. big). We also show that ampleness and nefness are transitive properties. We define the weakly movable cone as the cone generated by the pushforward of cycle classes of nef subvarieties via proper surjective maps. This cone contains the movable cone and shares similar intersection-theoretic properties with it, thanks to the aforementioned properties of nef subvarieties. On the other hand, we prove that if Y ⊂ X is an ample subscheme of codimension r and D | Y is q-ample, then D is ( q + r ) -ample. This is analogous to a result proved by Demailly-Peternell-Schneider and Kuronya.

In this paper we investigate the extent to which the Lovasz Local Lemma (an important tool in probabilistic combinatorics) can be adapted for the measurable setting. In most applications, the Lovasz Local Lemma is used to produce a function f : X → Y with certain properties, where X is some underlying combinatorial structure and Y is a (typically finite) set. Can this function f be chosen to be Borel or μ -measurable for some probability Borel measure μ on X (assuming that X is a standard Borel space)? In the positive direction, we prove that if the set of constraints put on f is, in a certain sense, “locally finite,” then there is always a Borel choice for f that is “ e -close” to satisfying these constraints, for any e > 0 . Moreover, if the combinatorial structure on X is “induced” by the [ 0 ; 1 ] -shift action of a countable group Γ, then, even without any local finiteness assumptions, there is a Borel choice for f which satisfies the constraints on an invariant conull set (i.e., with e = 0 ). A direct corollary of our results is an upper bound on the measurable chromatic number of the graph G n generated by the shift action of the free group F n that is asymptotically tight up to a factor of at most 2 (which answers a question of Lyons and Nazarov). On the other hand, our result for structures induced by measure-preserving group actions is, at least for amenable groups, sharp in the following sense: a probability measure-preserving action of a countably infinite amenable group satisfies the measurable version of the Lovasz Local Lemma if and only if it admits a factor map to the [ 0 ; 1 ] -shift action. To prove this, we combine the tools of the Ornstein–Weiss theory of entropy for actions of amenable groups with concepts from computability theory, specifically, Kolmogorov complexity.

Corresponding to the Legendre ellipsoid and the LYZ ellipsoid, two new sine ellipsoids are introduced in this paper. These four ellipsoids are closely related in the Pythagorean relation and duality. Several volume inequalities and the valuation properties are obtained for two new ellipsoids.

In this paper, we extend Kontsevich's formality theorem to Lie pairs, a framework which includes a range of diverse geometric contexts such as complex manifolds, foliations, and $\mathfrak{g}$-manifolds. The spaces $\cx{T}$ and $\cx{D}$ associated with a Lie pair $(L,A)$ each carry an $L_\infty$ algebra structure canonical up to $L_\infty$ isomorphism. These two spaces serve as replacements for the spaces of polyvector fields and polydifferential operators, respectively. Their corresponding cohomology groups $\cy{T}$ and $\cy{D}$ admit canonical Gerstenhaber algebra structures. We establish the following formality theorem for Lie pairs: there exists an $L_\infty$ quasi isomorphism from $\cx{T}$ to $\cx{D}$ whose first Taylor coefficient is equal to $\operatorname{hkr}\circ\td$. Here $\td$ acts on $\cx{T}$ by contraction. Furthermore, we prove a Kontsevich--Duflo type theorem for Lie pairs: the Hochschild--Kostant--Rosenberg map twisted by the square root of the Todd class of the Lie pair $(L,A)$ is an isomorphism of Gerstenhaber algebras from $\cy{T}$ to $\cy{D}$. As applications, we establish formality theorems and Kontsevich--Duflo type theorems for complex manifolds, foliations, and $\mathfrak{g}$-manifolds. Variation norm isometries are precisely the maps that preserve the maximal deviation, the quantum analogue of the standard deviation, which plays an important role in quantum statistics. Motivated by analogies with basic density theorems in analytic number theory, we introduce a notion (and variations) of the homological density of one space in another. We use Weil's number field/function field analogy to predict coincidences for limiting homological densities of various sequences Z n ( d 1 , … , d m ) ( X ) of spaces of 0-cycles on manifolds X. The main theorem in this paper is that these topological predictions, which seem strange from a purely topological viewpoint, are indeed true. One obstacle to proving such a theorem is the combinatorial complexity of all possible “collisions” of points. This problem does not arise in the simplest (and classical) case ( m , n ) = ( 1 , 2 ) of configuration spaces. To overcome this obstacle we apply the Bjorner–Wachs theory of lexicographic shellability from algebraic combinatorics.

Given an ample action of an inverse semigroup on a locally compact and Hausdorff topological space, we study the ideal structure of the crossed product algebra associated with it. By developing a theory of induced ideals, we manage to prove that every ideal in the crossed product algebra may be obtained as the intersection of ideals induced from isotropy group algebras. This can be interpreted as an algebraic version of the Effros-Hahn conjecture. Let X be a variety with an action by an algebraic group G. In this paper we discuss various properties of G-equivariant D -modules on X, such as the decompositions of their global sections as representations of G (when G is reductive), and descriptions of the categories that they form. When G acts on X with finitely many orbits, the category of equivariant D -modules is equivalent to the category of finite-dimensional representations of a finite quiver with relations. We describe explicitly these categories for irreducible G-modules X that are spherical varieties, and show that in such cases the quivers are almost always representation-finite (i.e. with finitely many indecomposable representations).

The Bialynicki-Birula decomposition of the space of λ-connections restricts to the Morse stratification on the moduli space of Higgs bundles and to the partial oper stratification on the de Rham moduli space of holomorphic connections. For both the Morse and partial oper stratifications, every stratum is a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration over a component of the space of complex variations of Hodge structure. In this paper, we generalize known results for the Hitchin section and the space of opers to arbitrary strata. These include the following: a biholomorphic identification of the fibers of the two strata over a stable variation of Hodge structure via the “ħ-conformal limit” of Gaiotto, a proof that the fibers of the Morse and partial oper stratifications are transverse at the base point, and an explicit parametrization of the fibers as half-dimensional affine spaces.

In arxiv:1602.04254, we have defined polynomial Witt vectors functor from vector spaces over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$ to abelian groups. In this paper, we use polynomial Witt vectors to construct a functorial Hochschild-Witt complex $WCH_*(A)$ for any associative unital $k$-algebra $A$, with homology groups $WHH_*(A)$. We prove that the group $WHH_0(A)$ coincides with the group of non-commutative Witt vectors defined by Hesselholt, while if $A$ is commutative, finitely generated, and smooth, the groups $WHH_i(A)$ are naturally identified with the terms $W\Omega^i_A$ of the de Rham-Witt complex of the spectrum of $A$., Comment: 64 pages, LaTeX2e

The Eichler-Shimura isomorphism relates holomorphic modular cusps forms of positive even integral weight to cohomology classes. The Haberland formula uses the cup product to give a cohomological formulation of the Petersson scalar product. In this paper we extend Haberland's formula to modular cusp forms of positive real weight. This relation is based on the cup product of an Eichler cocycle and a Knopp cocycle. We may also consider the cup product of two Eichler cocycles. In the classical situation this cup product is almost always zero. However we show evidence that for real weights this cup product may very well be non-trivial. We approach the question whether the cup product is a non-trivial coinvariant by duality with a space of entire modular forms. The cup product yields a bilinear map over C from pairs of holomorphic modular forms (not necessarily of the same weight, one of them may have large growth at the cusps) to coinvariants in infinite-dimensional modules. To investigate whether this bilinear map is non-trivial we test the result against entire modular forms of a suitable weight. Under some conditions on the weights, this leads to an explicit triple integral, which can be investigated numerically, thus providing evidence that the cup product is non-trivial at least in some situations.

Recently, a new partition function associated with Ramanujan's third order mock theta function ω ( q ) was discovered, and subsequently its overpartition analogue was introduced. In this paper, we prove an intriguing identity arising from the study of that analogue, which involves a double series of Hecke-Rogers type. In addition, two further identities will be given. Our proofs heavily rely on formulas from the work of Liu [12] .

Abelian categories provide a self-dual axiomatic context for establishing homomorphism theorems (such as the isomorphism theorems and homological diagram lemmas) for abelian groups, and more generally, modules. In this paper we describe a self-dual context which allows one to establish the same theorems in the case of non-abelian group-like structures; the question of whether such a context can be found has been left open for seventy years. We also formulate and prove in our context a universal isomorphism theorem from which all other isomorphism theorems can be deduced.

We consider the type I multiple orthogonal polynomials (MOPs) ( A n , m , B n , m ) , deg ⁡ A n , m ≤ n − 1 , deg ⁡ B n , m ≤ m − 1 , and type II MOPs P n , m , deg ⁡ P n , m = n + m , satisfying non-hermitian orthogonality with respect to the weight e − z 3 on two unbounded contours γ 1 and γ 2 on C , with (in the case of type II MOPs) n conditions on γ 1 and m on γ 2 . Under the assumption that n , m → ∞ , n n + m → α ∈ ( 0 , 1 ) we find the detailed (rescaled) asymptotics of A n , m , B n , m and P n , m on C , and describe the phase transitions of this limit behavior as a function of α. This description is given in terms of the vector critical measure μ → α = ( μ 1 , μ 2 , μ 3 ) , the saddle point of an energy functional comprising both attracting and repelling forces. This critical measure is characterized by a cubic equation (spectral curve), and its components μ j live on trajectories of a canonical quadratic differential ϖ on the Riemann surface of this equation. The structure of these trajectories and their deformations as functions of α was object of study in our previous paper [42] , and some of the present results strongly rely on the analysis carried out there. We conclude that the asymptotic zero distribution of the polynomials A n , m and P n , m are given by appropriate combinations of the components μ j of the vector critical measure μ → α . However, in the case of the zeros of B n , m the behavior is totally different, and can be described in terms of the balayage of the signed measure μ 2 − μ 3 onto certain curves on the plane. These curves are constructed with the aid of the canonical quadratic differential ϖ, and their topology has three very distinct characters, depending on the value of α, and are obtained from the critical graph of ϖ. Once the trajectories and vector critical measures are studied, the main asymptotic technical tool is the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent analysis of a 3 × 3 matrix-valued Riemann–Hilbert problem characterizing both ( A n , m , B n , m ) and P n , m , which allows us to obtain the limit behavior of both types of MOPs simultaneously. We illustrate our findings with results of several numerical experiments, explain the computational methodology, and formulate some conjectures and empirical observations based on these experiments.

For a connected quasi-split reductive algebraic group G over a field k, which is either a finite field or a non-archimedean local field, θ an involutive automorphism of G over k, let K = G θ . Let K 1 = [ K 0 , K 0 ] , the commutator subgroup of K 0 , the connected component of identity of K. In this paper, we provide a simple condition on ( G , θ ) for there to be an irreducible admissible generic representation π of G with Hom K 1 [ π , C ] ≠ 0 . The condition is most transparent to state in terms of a real reductive group G θ ( R ) associated to the pair ( G , θ ) being quasi-split.
