Hydroisomerization reactions are not only of industrial importance but also of theoretical interest. The catalysts reported for these reactions include a hydrogenation component—such as nickel and platinum—deposited on acidic supports—such as silica-alumina or platinum—on alumina-containing halogen. A detailed study of the hydroisomerization reaction as a function of catalyst composition and experimental conditions is described in this chapter. Ethylcyclohexane is chosen as a model compound for the study of cycloalkanes as it may form a variety of isomers, of which the alkylcyclohexanes can be readily investigated. To determine the path through which such reactions may proceed, ethylcyclohexane having a labeled carbon atom in the α position of the side chain is hydroisomerized. The composition of alkylcyclohexanes in a hydroisomerate and the distribution of the radioactivity between a ring and side chain are described in the chapter.
