We report on Kerr lens mode locking of Yb:CALGO by means of high-brightness optical pumping with a diffraction limited fibre laser. Various cavity configurations have been investigated to deliver sub-40 fs pulses at watt level and pulse duration as short as 32 fs.

60-mJ pulses were generated directly from a quasi-coaxially pumped Ce:LiCAF laser. Additionally, a new non-collinear Brewster-pumping disk oscillator scheme was demonstrated for further output-energy scaling.

A compact conductively cooled diode-pumped laser oscillator and amplifier generates 5.2 mJ at 1.064 μm at a repetition rate from 1 to 100 Hz. with a pulselength of 1.4 nsec FWHM.

A dual rod configuration is used to achieve 16W average power operation from a flashlamp-pumped Cr:LiSAF laser oscillator. A double-pass dual-rod amplifier configuration was used to amplify 141{mu}J pulses from a Q-switched diode-pumped LiSAF oscillator by a factor of {approximately}120. This experiment established a small signal gain of 13.4% per cm at 820 nm. Improved slope efficiency (7.4% electrical-to-light) and pulse repetition frequency (40Hz) were achieved with a single-rod oscillator using improved Cr:LiSAF material.
