Abstract

A low refractive index electron transport layer (ETL) can be very effective in enhancing the out-coupling efficiency of an organic light-emitting diode (OLED). However, most organic films show a refractive index close to 1.8. In this work, it has been discovered that tris-[3-(3-pyridyl)mesityl]borane (3TPYMB) has a low refractive index of 1.65 (at 550 nm), which is the lowest refractive index ETL among the commonly used ETLs up to date. Using 3TPYMB as an ETL, a solution processed OLED is demonstrated with nearly a 76% enhancement in external quantum efficiency (EQE). Optical simulation results of this study show that 59% of the enhancement comes from the low refractive index 3TPYMB, and the remaining 17% from the change in charge balance due to the 3TPYMB ETL in the OLED devices.

Abstract

Multifunctional materials with stimuli‐responsive features are demonstrated to be promising smart materials. In this work, three multifunctional materials, namely 5TzPmPXZ, 7TzPmPXZ, and 5,7TzPmPXZ, are constructed by integrating phenoxazine with electron‐acceptor core [1,2,4]triazolo[1,5‐a]pyrimidine (TzPm). Intriguingly, these materials exhibit not only thermally activated delayed fluorescence but also multicolor luminescence switching which is caused by the phase transitions between microcrystalline and amorphous states upon external stimuli. Moreover, the solution‐processed organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) fabricated with these materials furnish a high external quantum efficiency up to 14.3% and the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.43, 0.53), which represents the state‐of‐the‐art performance for solution‐processed yellow OLEDs. Multifunctional emitters endowed with both thermally activated delayed fluorescence and mechanochromic luminescent features are developed by integrating phenoxazine with electron‐acceptor [1,2,4]triazolo[1,5‐a]pyrimidine. The solution‐processed yellow organic light emitting diodes fabricated with these emitters demonstrate a high external quantum efficiency up to 14.3%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Solution processed thin-film solar technologies, such as organic photovoltaics, and more recently, perovskite solar cells, may provide low-cost electricity generation. These technologies suffer from insufficient light absorption due to thin absorber layers. Plasmonic nanostructures have been incorporated in both technologies, initially with the aim of increasing light absorption, but reports have also shown significant enhancement in electrical characteristics in devices. Enhancement mechanisms that are facilitated by plasmonic nanostructures such as improved exciton dissociation and charge carrier transport, can occur concurrently with improved light absorption. This work surveys the myriad enhancement mechanisms and, importantly, discusses the extent of current understanding, as well as insights gained in plasmonics applications thus far. Given the substantial opportunities, the continuous focus on characterization and interpretation of enhancement mechanisms is imperative to unlock the full potential of plasmonic organic and perovskite solar cells. In particular, electrical or electronic effects from plasmonic nanostructure integration deserves further attention as a promising complement to improvements in device performance from optical effects.
