Nowadays, a furnace designer has to meet the demands of the customer precisely to allow economical production at site. Repeatable high quality throughout millions of produced parts combined with high cost efficiency is needed to stay competitive. Thus the facility has to be changed from a black-box to a glassy furnace which records and controls all important process values that define the properties of the produced parts and the consumption of the facility. Current furnace designs offer a wide variety of layouts with unique advantages and disadvantages. Single type furnace designs are well known and need the lowest investments but they also take up a lot of space and do not offer a back-up solution during maintenance or in the event of malfunctions occurring. Twin type furnaces have a higher degree of flexibility as they still allow 50% production during downtime caused by maintenance or malfunctions, so availability is higher than with single type furnaces. Double layer furnaces, which are stacked versions of the twin type furnaces, only need half of the floor space but maintenance is more complicated on the upper level. An oxygen-free furnace atmosphere is essential for the production of components in process atmosphere in order to ensure high quality results with the minimum of scale and other surface defects. This is not possible in a multi-level furnace.

Industrialized production most often takes place in large-scale systems consisting of multisite units, which are managed with central strategic planning, and decision units and local management teams in order to exploit capacity and scale benefits. Manufacturers are searching for new strategies that will increase their capability to be responsive to market needs while remaining competitive according to cost, time and service level criteria. Responsiveness has mainly been studied in one-dimensional production and supply chain environments, single production sites or the supply chain of a single production site. We argue in this paper that in the fast-moving consumer sector (FMCS) within a multisite production environment, where there is a need for coordination, responsiveness has to be further analyzed. We have explored responsiveness and flexibility in such an environment in order to identify the factors that require and enable responsiveness in a production networks system, and identified a number of factors, which are analyzed in the form of a case study.

Modern manufacturing plants even if they produce in large quantities, they often have to change the settings of their production lines. Customers do not want a standard product but personalized models. If the differences are only an option that can be mounted to the finished elements is not difficult. When the differences are much more serious and require changes in the technology of the element. Such orders are collected and made periodically so customers have to wait. Sometimes the wait time is several months. Changing the configuration of the production line or just a robot cell is a difficult and time-consuming process. It is necessary to stop the entire production line, the partially disassemble and installation of new equipment, and after the production of the series, the process repeated. The reconfiguration can take from several hours to several days, even weeks. These changes are costly, and these costs are borne by people buying individual model. Here are examples of the concepts presented elements of an exemplary robotic cell. Different degrees of modification will be presented from simple mechanical systems shortening the time to reconfigure the cell to a fully automatic reconfigurable systems. As an example will be presented to the cell welding. This cell is ready to make a specific item. The concept of adapting the cell to make the like is the first step modification. The next step is to automate the position so that the elements can be produced alternately. The introduction of an additional item of the approximated dimensions to the list made in a cell and automation, is another way to increase the flexibility of the cell. The final stage of the present article is the concept of robotic cell, designed to make the same process for any element. These concepts require a change in transmitting information to each of the stages and the whole process control at every stage. It is possible to transfer productive resources but this requires advanced management methods. Ensuring the mobility of selected measures to increase production efficiency but this requires the use of such multi-agent systems.

High competition, globalization, business process outsourcing, and rising regulatory environments and demanding consumers are forcing enterprises to transform the way they provide their business and services. The implementation of service oriented architecture (SOA) in manufacturing can meet requirements for frequently changing market demands, global competition, rising require production systems concerning flexibility and adaptability. This article will discuss the SOA approach and its potential impact for energy consumption and energy reduction related in industry. Nowadays we meet new industrial control systems providing lower time-to market and shorter product cycles. The inflexible communication infrastructure between the manufacturing process elements difficulties the adoption of porting production with high degree of reconfigurability and interoperability. The adoption of a SOA can bring real benefits to the industrial automation communication. Service-oriented architecture provides a flexible, open solution for manufacturing plants. We are facing a new era with the necessity of convergence of solution and higher integration, it can be provided combining services in a cross-layer form. In this scenario we meet an ecosytem (systems to systems) interaction, information available in near real-time, with process being orchestred in a higher level and with higher scale. This article will describe SOA approach and explain the expected results for end users, suppliers and society with optimization of energy consumption.

Modern enterprises face the challenge of volatile markets. The multifarious influencing factors particularly include uncertain demand quantities. This means that it is increasingly important for production systems to be able to react quickly. At the same time, it is becoming more and more difficult to adequately depict this specific volume flexibility due to the complexity of the systems involved. Although existing research work has recognised flexibility as a decisive competitive factor for production systems, the focus until now has only been on qualitative investigations. Quantitative approaches are only found for specific problems. This paper presents a new approach to depict and analyse the volume flexibility of production systems in consideration of existing definitions and approaches. The resulting paths of investigation serve as approaches for future research projects for a quantitative analysis and optimisation of the volume flexibility of production systems.

The shift to satisfied customer markets forces manufacturers to offer customised products. Moreover, product lifecycles are shortened, which requires a faster development of products and corresponding production systems. Both challenges amplify complexity in production. This complexity is usually confronted with flexibility. A new approach offering decentralised structures, and thereby flexibility, comes from cybertronic systems (CTS), which are further developed mechatronic systems with the capability to communicate through open networks with other such mechatronic systems. Up to now no integrated development process to engineer cybertronic products (CTP) and production systems (CTPS) has been developed, although such a process is essential to use their beneficial properties for today’s market conditions. Therefore, research is conducted in the research project mecPro². First, the properties of cybertronic systems are investigated and dissociated from those of mechatronic systems. Based on these properties, the connections of CTP and CTPS are analysed and a systematics for description for both is identified. With this the model-based development processes of CTP and CTPS can be further defined as well as their intersections and afterwards implemented in a data model. Finally, the development process is summarised in a product lifecycle management software to support the development process.

Besides the energy efficiency approach to reduce energy demands of production systems there are also other possibilities to decrease the energy related operating costs. Amongst others avoiding long-term peak loads represents a common measure. In possible future cases a flexible energy demand of factories can also be refunded by the energy provider within new tariff structures. This paper shows the potentials of production systems to alternate their energy demand within productive state, which is also referred to as technical energy flexibility. The focus is on machines of sensitive main processes, where an influence on the energy demand could induce distinct negative effects on the product quality. It is shown how and to which extent the energy demand of production systems can be controlled without negative effects.

The layout of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) involves distributing different resources for achieving maximum efficiency. To provide a variety of products to customers the FMS has created a significant set of operational changes. Among this, layout planning is more important in achieving productivity of FMS. The problem of this type is combinatorial in nature and found to be Non-deterministic Polynomial (NP) complete. This paper focuses the loop layout planning of an FMS with the aim of minimizing the transportation distance and the backtracking distances of the Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) using the hybrid Scatter Search - Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (SS-PSO). Since the Loop layout has relatively low initial costs and contains few material handling links with higher flexibility. SS-PSO operates on unifying principles based on strategic designs compared to other metaheuristic algorithms such as GA, PSO etc. Hybrid SS-PSO approach is applied to seven and nine machines loop layout problem. It is found that the proposed algorithm provides a better solution with fast convergence rate compared with other metaheuristic algorithms.

An algorithm of uncertain reasoning which more than one result of a new object can be obtained according to the known knowledge is an important part of an expert system. A new object is an especial decision rule which has only a predecessor. In order to resolve the problem that the differences of attributes’ importance in the new object are not considered in traditional methods of uncertain reasoning, a new uncertain reasoning algorithm based on the rules set which is obtained on the basis of the rough set theory is proposed. In the algorithm, both subjective factors and objective factors in the process of reasoning are considered, and the proportion of subjective factors to objective factors can be controlled by users. So the algorithm is better than the tradition method in flexibility and practicability.

Wind power is a new technology compared with thermo power, the damage of sub-synchronous oscillations cloud bring to the shaft of wind turbine do not get enough notices. There are few studies on wind turbines sub-synchronous oscillation now, which are built on the model of rigid shaft. As we all know wind turbine shaft is unlike the shaft of stream turbine, there are couplings and gearbox in wind turbine which make the shaft flexible, so the studies of wind turbine sub-synchronous oscillations based on rigid shaft model are not reasonable, this paper introduces a new flexible shaft model for studying of wind turbine sub-synchronous oscillations. Flexible equipments, such as joints and gearbox are taken into consideration when the model are set up, so this model is far more scientific.

Cognitive radio (CR) is a promising technology which has the potential to utilize the scarce spectrum resources with high flexibility and efficiency. It’s well accepted that cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) with numbers of cognitive users (CUs) located in a wide geographical area can achieve much better sensing performance. However, some CRs may misbehave and provide false sensing information in order to deteriorate the system’s performance. This misbehavior is known as spectrum sensing data falsification (SSDF) attack. In this paper, we propose a secure spectrum sensing scheme using peer-assessment to detect malicious CUs and filter their spectrum sensing results out of the final decision making process. The robustness and efficiency of the proposed scheme are verified through extensive computer simulations in presence of SSDF attacks.

Manufacturing companies in high-wage countries can pursue two strategies to make up for their competitive disadvantage due to the unfavourable cost structure. They can either resort to an individualisation of the products or make use of economies of scale in production by high numbers. Only very few companies however are able to reconcile both strategies. One way to meet these requirements is in the use of flexible, automated systems. Here, the feeding process for automated, flexible assembly systems often represents a bottleneck. Conventional feeding systems come up against their limits. They are often only able to achieve the required output as redundant systems, and they are limited in their flexibility and set-up capability due to the mechanical design. Innovative solution approaches in this field can be offered by the aerodynamic orientation technology and the aerodynamic separation technology. In contrast to conventional feeding systems, these processes, due to their basic operating principle, already have high potential with regard to variant neutrality, flexibility and output. Aerodynamic part orientation technology takes advantage of the asymmetry of workpieces in order to orientate them with the aid of air impulses. In the case of aerodynamic part separation technology, workpieces are separated from a pile of material by an air vortex and individually transported out of the system. It has been shown that these technologies, due to their functional principle and the simple mechanical construction as compared to conventional systems, offer greater flexibility, are less prone to failures and can in some cases more than double the output.
