The electric papers have a wide variety of uses like in transformers, cables and power capacitors. Each application involves different requirements related to its mechanical and electric properties. The kraft is the dielectric paper most used due its high mechanical resistance and a dielectric strength of around 5 kV/mm that is increased up to 30 kV/mm when is impregnated with mineral oil and typically has a density of 0.7, nevertheless continuous improvements in the design, for example, of power transformers raise the need to improve its electrical properties particularly those related to its relative permittivity. In this article, structural parameters such as distribution and pore size of kraft paper and theoretical analysis for possible addition of nanofillers to improve their dielectric behavior are reported. A possible and better criterion for designing transformers can be the employment of kraft paper nano-inserted with 5 % of TiO2 or BaTiO3 stew in mineral oil and immersed in natural ester liquid.

The aim of this study was to obtain the effect of drying methods on surface properties and ink penetration. Laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM) was used in order to characterize the penetration depth through quantitative analysis. Fluorescent ink was used to observe and characterize ink penetration and distribution by LSCM. The results showed that the drying methods had an important role on the surface properties and ink penetration of coated paper. Infrared drying compared with vacuum drying and hot air drying was good to improve the paper properties, which resulted in low roughness, high gloss, low ink absorption and high paper surface efficiency. It could be concluded that infrared drying compared with vacuum drying and hot air drying resulted in the highest print density and better printability.

The paper wooden compound pallets are produced through the processing and assembly by using particle board, paper tubes and PE coated paper board as raw materials. Comparing with traditional wooden flat plate, the new type of green environmental protection pallets has many advantages such as high strength, light weight, low cost, waterproof, anti-moth-eaten, no need fumigation, etc. is an ideal green transport packaging materials for export commodities. The paper discusses and probes into the process and technology of paper wooden compound pallets.

What happens in the paper surface about ink absorption is of great important for appearance of final printing. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the influence of printing pressure and printing speed on ink layer thickness transferred onto coated paper through quantitative analysis by laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM). Meanwhile, the influence of printing pressure and printing speed on print density and print gloss were obtained. The results implied that higher printing pressure resulted in higher ink layer thickness, print density and print gloss when printing pressure is less than 700N, but higher printing speed resulted in lower ink layer thickness, print density and print gloss when printing pressure is constant. It could be concluded that the coated paper with high printing speed compared with low printing speed resulted in lower ink absorption, lower print density, lower print gloss and worse printability on the condition of same printing pressure.

The ink penetration behavior depends on the coating surface structure and surface properties of the coating layer in the papermaking process, which include coating recipes and coating conditions, etc. The objective of this experiment was to investigate the relationship between binder content and ink absorption using laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM). Fluorescent ink was used to observe and characterize ink penetration and distribution in coated paper by LSCM. The results indicated that higher binder content could result in higher amount ink absorption. With the increasing of binder content, ink penetration depth in coated paper increased. Sample G2 with 20 parts binder produced the most unevenness ink distribution. It could be concluded that the coated paper with 25 parts binder compared with the other samples resulted in higher ink usage and better printing quality.

In present time, recycled paper from xerographic and laser-printed wastepaper plays an important role as alternatives to paper from virgin pulp because of their good pulp quality and high amount of wastepaper each year. This type of paper is classified as Mixed Office Wastepaper (MOW). The xerographic and laser-printed inks are usually called “toner” which its formulation is different from conventional ink. This work aimed to investigate paper recycling by flotation deinking process. The flotation experiments were conducted using SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) and Triton X-100 (C14H22O(C2H4O)n). The experimental results demonstrated that ink removal was more efficient with the use of non-ionic surfactant (Triton X-100) than anionic surfactant (SDS). The efficiency of ink removal was determined by ERIC and the pulp’s brightness. In addition, the quality of de-inked pulps was evaluated by pulp physical properties such as burst strength, tear strength and tensile strength.

The manufacturing process of particle composite for furniture, made of waste paper and wood particle, was studied and discussed in this paper, and an ornament cabinet and a Chinese style teapoy were assembled in the laboratory with the composite. The results showed the mechanical properties of composite made of waste paper, was low. Wood particle was blended with waste paper and made into composite, and the mechanical properties of the composite could meet the demand of particle board for furniture and ornament under the Chinese national standard. The application of waste paper-based composite was feasible technically.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of drying condition on the binder distribution and characterize the binder migration in the method of numerical and visual analysis by Scanning Electrical Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope (LSCM). In this study, Rhodamine B was used to stain the binder and as the probe to characterize z-directional distribution of the binder using LSCM. The results implied that it was reliable and effective method using LSCM to characterize the z- directional distribution of binder and analyze the influence of dry condition on binder migration. It could be concluded that the dry temperature played an important effect on binder distribution in coated paper and high dry temperature accelerated binder migration to the coating surface, however low drying temperature made binder migrate towards the interior of base paper. Moderate drying is good to binder distribution and coating layer forming.

A proprietary in situ chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process was developed to grow a layer of pyrocarbon on carbon paper preform for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). The carbon paper preform is continuously manufactured by dry method. The characteristics of the carbon paper such as surface morphology, polarized light characteristics, and cross-section morphology were characterized using electron microscope, polarized light microscope, respectively. Fuel cell performance of the carbon paper was evaluated using single cell with hydrogen/air at various relative humidity (RH) conditions. The carbon paper with in situ growth of pyrocarbon showed significant improvement in lowering in-plane electrical resistance as well as fuel cell performance at dry condition. The carbon paper as seen under scanning electron microscope showed excellent surface morphology with pyrocarbon connecting carbon fibers tightly by CVD process.

Relaxation function can well reflect the microscopic polarization mechanism of dielectric. In order to analyze the influence of moisture and temperature on relaxation function of oil-paper insulation, building a physical model of the oil-paper insulation system containing moisture and obtaining the expression of relaxation function. Setting up a testing device for the oil paper insulation dielectric spectroscopy in the laboratory, the parameter values of relaxation function expression were obtained according to test result by Fourier inverse transformation. The results show that the relaxation function containing three relaxation factors are more suited for the relaxation of oil-paper insulation containing moisture content and microscopic polarization mechanism, moisture and temperature have a significant effect on relaxation function.

In this paper, Old Corrugated Container (OCC) was used as the raw material for making paper. The layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly process of creating highly structured thin films was adopted to modify the surface of OCC fibres. Poly dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) have been used to build up polyelectrolyte multilayers on OCC fibres under a certain condition. Zeta potential analyzer was used to monitor the dynamic adsorption of PDADMAC and HEC with different amount on OCC fibers. Strength measurements of the sheets including tensile index and bursting index were also determined, showing a significant improvement in physical strength with the increase of adsorbed layer number. Compared with not being processed sheets, tensile index and bursting index of sheets from treated fibre with polyelectrolyte multilayers were raised by 36.65% and 49.50%, respectively. Furthermore, filtration time analysis of OCC fibre suspension showed that the built up of PDADMAC and HEC on OCC fibres could improve the fiber-fiber joint strength of joints from polymer-treated fibers, which made the filtration time decline from 30 s to 10.6 s. In addition, SEM was introduced to observe the morphology of the PDADMAC/HEC multilayers. The images revealed that the surface of OCC fibres structured a film like plastic, which could be ascribed to the adsorption layer of polyelectrolyte.

Self-supporting film of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), also known as SWNT paper, is held together by Van der Waals force without any chemical binders. Prepared by vacuum filtration method, SWNT paper was then decorated wirh polypyrrole (PPy) through pulsed potentio amperometric polymerization. The results indicated that the SWNT paper had a typical network structure, after polymerizing PPy, cauliflower-like structure was observed on the surface of SWNT ropes. The composite thin film has good cyclic voltammetry (CV) property and the specific capacitance wass ca.420Fg-1, which was much larger than that of pure SWNT paper.

In this paper two types of oil-paper samples are thermally aged in two temperatures of 120. The samples are constituted by 25# oil, 45# oil and paper. Some aging indicators are measured during the aging process. Three parameters are measured during the aging process. The insulating ability of paper can be evaluated by water content and CO2/CO value. The model of functional relation for degree of polymerization (DP) with CO2/CO value, water content and service period are established by multiple linear regression analysis.

In the offset process, ink penetration performance has extremely important influence on the quality of printed products. Ink penetration behavior and ink transfer volume on the offset paper surface were researched with the aid of IGT printability tester (AIC2-5) in the conditions of temperature 20±3°C and humidity of 60 ± 5%. Effect of different printing pressure and printing speed on the ink penetration depth was discussed, and at the same time, the depth was measured by GX71 Inverted Metallurgical Microscope. The results showed that, with the increasing of printing pressure, the changes of ink penetration depth and the ink transfer volume on offset paper surface were increased firstly and then decreased. When printing pressure was 400N, the ink penetration depth reached the maximum 71.67μm and the ink transfer volume reached the maximum too. With the enhancing of printing speed, ink penetration depth and ink transfer volume would be decreased gradually. The study also found that ink penetration behavior had certain influence on the ink color forming properties. For the offset paper used in this experiment, when ink penetration depth was 60.0μm~63.0μm, the print had high ink color intensity and color efficiency. When the ink penetration depth was too deep, ink color intensity and color efficiency was significantly reduced, while the color hue error would be increased, the print ink color turned shallow.

Carbon fiber paper was modified by adding carbon nanotubes to make it reach the demand of gas diffusion layer (GDL) by the process of impregnation with phenolic resin solution dispersed with carbon nanotubes, molding, and carbonization. The properties of modified carbon fiber paper, thickness, density, porosity, gas permeability, specific resistance and tensile strength, were characterized. The results indicate that surface treatment is helpful to disperse carbon nanotubes in phenolic resin. Phenolic resin is used to bond the carbon fibers, and carbon nanotube could reduce the specific resistance of the carbon fiber paper. When carbon nanotube content is 5 %, modified carbon fiber paper is prepared with thickness of 0.30 mm, density of 0.43 g/cm3, porosity of 77 %, gas permeability of 2400 mL•mm/(cm2•h•mmAq), specific resistance of 0.020 Ω•cm and tensile strength of 15 MPa, which basically qualifies for the application requirement.

Ink is transferred and sets onto the paper surface in the printing process, which affect printing quality and usage of ink. The objective of this experiment was to investigate the influence of ink type on ink absorption and characterize the penetration depth through quantitative analysis by Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope (LSCM). Fluorescent ink was used to observe and characterize ink penetration by LSCM. Three-dimensional images of ink pigment penetration were obtained by reconstructing all XY plane images. It could be concluded Common offset printing ink compared with UV offset printing resulted in deeper ink penetration ,uneven ink distribution and lower print density. Because the composition and drying method of UV offset printing ink and common offset printing ink were significant different, penetration depth and distribution uniformity of these two types of offset printing ink in coated paper were distinct.

Calcium sulphate is rich in natural resources and by-product of many industrial processes. However, most calcium sulphate product was only used with low added value or treated as waste, harmful to environment. If the calcium sulphate can be used as papermaking filler, very high added value can be gained and also the environment problem can be solved. In this paper calcium sulphate from by product of industry was characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and scanning electron micrograph (SEM), and then used as papermaking filler. The influence of calcium sulphate filler on pulp suspension and paper properties was studies. The results showed that the calcium sulphate fillers were composed of three crystal forms, dihydrate, hemihydrate, anhydrite, and it was needle or fiber shape, hollow in the middle; calcium sulphate showed high brightness and high conductivity in water, compared with talc or ground calcium carbonate(GCC) filler. When calcium sulphate filler was used in papermaking process the filler retention was very small because of its high solubility in water. Calcination at high temperature can lower the solubility of calcium sulphate and slightly increase the retention, but the retention was still quite small. The future work should focus on controlling the solubility of calcium sulphate.

In this paper, poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanofiber was prepared by an electrospinning method. Graphene oxide sheets was obtained via filtration from graphene oxide aqueous solution which synthesized by Hummers method. By sonication, a homogeneously dispersed and well distributed poly acylic acid and graphene oxide nanosheets solution were obtained, and this can be used to modify the neat poly (vinylidene fluoride) nanofiber membrane for not only increasing the hydrophilic properties but also improving the mechanical properties. The poly(vinylidene fluoride)/graphene oxide composite membrane was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, pore properties and mechanical properties. The composite membrane showed an appropriate pore size, excellent mechanical property comparing with pure poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane. The results showed the membrane could be feasibly used as a MF membrane.

Green composites of Glucose-reduced graphene oxide (GrGO) and manganese (IV) oxide (MnO2) were prepared in a typical chemical synthesis route assisted with ultrasonic irradiation. Conductivity studies conducted via 2-point probe method shows GrGO/MnO2(4:1) possessed electrical conductivity of 30.29 S cm-1with energy band gap of 8.47×10-1eV. The increase of D/G intensity ratio of GrGO with increase MnO2loading indicates more disorder carbon or defects are introduced from the reaction of carbon with MnO4-.

This article shows us a way to disperse graphene with PEK-c and a method to make graphene/PEK-c films with great surface conductivity. The characterization of grapheme was analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) as well as chloroform without dispersant was identified to be the suitable system to disperse graphene. Graphene/PEK-c films are fabricated in a large scale using coating method. The conductivity of the films were tested by surface resistance tester as well as the surface resistance of graphene/PEK-c film with 50%wt graphene is about 50Ω/sq. Micro cracks were observed by SEM images that were the main reasons to explain the performance differences between real and theoretical conductivity.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the influence of curing time on expansive soil as a construction material when treated with eco-cement stabilizer, as partly substituting the Portland cement. Standard consolidation samples were prepared from treated soils with 10 % cement (5% eco-cement and 5% Portland cement), reported to the dry unit weight of soil, and cured for 1, 7 and 14 days. After this period the soil samples were then socked in water and standard consolidation tests were performed on them. The compressibility characteristics, for the improved soil with 10% cement, Eoed, mv and Cv have shown a significant improvement during the first 7 days. After 7 days curing time the variation of compressibility characteristics is less pronounced.

We introduced a facile method to construct new ternary hierarchical nanocomposites by combining MnO2coated one dimensional (1D) conducting polyaniline (PANI) nanowires with 2D graphene oxide sheets (GOs). The hierarchical nanocomposite structures of PANI@MnO2/Graphene oxide were further proved by XRD, SEM and TEM measurements. The ternary composites possessed higher electrochemical capacitance than each individual component as supercapacitor electrode materials.Such intriguing electrochemical performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of MnO2, PANI and GOs. The hierarchical ternary nanocomposites show excellent electrochemical properties for energy storage applications, which evidence their potential application as supercapacitors.

Graphite oxide is of great importance in preparing graphene, the average layer of graphene depends on that of graphene oxide in some extent. In this paper, we prepared graphite oxide via H3PO4/H2SO4mixed acid, then which were dried by vacuum drying in a freezer dryer and drying oven respectively, the graphite oxide powder and thin film were obtained correspondingly. After dispersing the above two forms of graphite oxide in water by shaking, stirring or supersonic wave, they were reduced in the same condition. According to the XRD, AFM results, vacuum freeze-drying was inclined to gain few-lay graphene.

Different thickness multi-layer graphene were prepared by the method of liquid ultrasonic stripping and characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. Friction and wear properties of graphene liquid dispersing system were investigated using an Multi-functional reciprocating friction and wear tester in ambient condition. Results indicate that the graphene were in thickness of 10nm-100nm. Multi-layer graphene showed good anti-friction and anti-wear properties as paraffin liquid additives. Multi-layer graphene liquid dispersing system had the best tribological properties with 20N and 0.01wt%, and the average friction coefficient was 0.129, and the wear mass was 4.12×106μm3, reduced by 21.34% and 41.14% than paraffin liquid. The reason is that Multi-layer graphene could adsorb on the worn surface and form solid adsorption layer, which maked the friction and wear reduce.

Graphene, a two-dimensional nanocarbon material with unique planar structure, has wide application prospects in the field of thermal management due to its excellent thermal conductive property. The test methods for thermal conductivity of graphene are described. Research progress in the application of graphene in the field of thermal management is reviewed. Especially, the application of graphene in nanofluids, thermal interface materials and thermal conductive composites is described in detail.

Fe3O4microspheres and its composities with graphene are prepared by the controlled thermal decomposition of an iron alkoxide precursor, which are obtained via an ethylene glycol (EG) mediated solvothermal reaction of ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3·6H2O) and sodium acetate (NaAc) with graphene dopings. The resulting Fe3O4microspheres are uniform with a diameter of 0.2-0.5μm. Electrochemical properties of both Fe3O4microspheres and Fe3O4/graphene composites are discussed. SEM analysis shows that a large number of Fe3O4particles with spherical morphologies are homogeneously anchored to the rGO sheets surface. Electrochemical results showed that charge and discharge capacities for Fe3O4/graphene composites are larger than those for Fe3O4microspheres electrodes after the 30th cycles which due to the synergistic effect of Fe3O4and graphene. Graphene improves the electronic conductivity of Fe3O4microspheres and increases the interfacial contact area between the Fe3O4microspheres and electrolyte which is benefitable for lithium ion battery. So Fe3O4/graphene composites are better anode materials than Fe3O4microspheres.

We utilized pressure-, vacuum-, and evaporation-assisted self-assembly techniques through which graphene oxide (GO) was deposited on modified polyacrylonitrile (mPAN). The fabricated composite GO/mPAN membranes were applied to dehydrate 1-butanol mixtures by pervaporation. Varying driving forces in the self-assembly techniques induced different GO assembly layer microstructures. XRD results indicated that the GO layer d-spacing varied from 8.3 Å to 11.5 Å. The self-assembly technique with evaporation resulted in a heterogeneous GO layer with loop structures; this layer was shown to be hydrophobic, in contrast to the hydrophilic layer formed from the other two techniques. From the pressure-assisted technique, the composite membrane exhibited exceptional pervaporation performance at 30 °C: concentration of water at the permeate side = 99.6 wt% and permeation flux = 2.54 kg m-2 h-1. This excellent separation performance stemmed from the dense, highly ordered laminate structure of GO.

Graphene has weak interface compatibility to its solvent, and it is easy to get agglomeration in the solvent. In this paper, graphehe is modified by grafting method to improve the aqueous dispersion. Oxidized graphene is firstly prepared by modified Hummer’s method and supersonic exfoliation. Then oxidized graphene is grafted by hydrophilic polymer polyacrylamide (PAM) and deoxidized into modified graphene. The product is characterized by TEM, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy and sedimentation test. And the result demonstrates a modified graphene is successfully synthesized and its compatibility to the media is enhanced as assumption. When the ratio between PAM and graphene is 1:10, the suspension absorbance is improved as twice as common graphene’s. Meanwhile the concentration of graphene in suspension can reach 0.05mg/ml without any agglomeration.

Graphene normally has weak interface compatibility to organics. In this paper, the surface of graphene is modified in order to improve its compatibility with polymer matrixes. Therefore, a Silane Coupling Agent(SCA) γ-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane is used to modify graphene. The results of the TEM, FTIR and sedimentation test show that SCA grafting can improve the graphene’s dispersion stability in polar organic solvent. Then modified graphene is added to epoxy resin to obtain an epoxy resin composite. The conductivity of the epoxy resin compostie can reach 8.00E-009 s/m. When additional percentage of SCA is over 0.5%, the dielectric constant (ε) has a remarkable increase.

For the situation that concrete engineering required rapid and timely repair after nature disaster, setting time and influencing factors of phosphate rapid repair material were studied in this paper. The results showed that setting time of phosphate rapid repair material increased a little with increase of water and binder ratio but the setting time was short. When water and binder ratio was less than 0.20 setting time was less than 3min. Setting time was shorted with reducing of P/M. Setting time was from 2min30s to 5min when P/M was reduced from 1:0.6 to 1:4. Setting time of phosphate cement increase a little mixed with fly ash, slag or portland cement but effect of their content on setting time was little. Setting time of phosphate rapid repair material increased with increase of B/M. When content was greated than 12% the setting time was longer than 20min. Fly ash, slag and portland cement can reduce setting time of phosphate cement with borax obviously.

The objective of this study was to determine formaldehyde emission considering the following factors; indoor air temperature, type of resin, and thickness of particleboard. Formaldehyde emissions from particleboards were analyzed using the JIS A 1460 and the Perforatored EN 120 methods. Three sets of experiments were conducted to investigate effects on formaldehyde emission from particleboard samples due to these factors. For the first factor, test specimens were conditioned in a dry oven at 20, 35, and 40 °C for a period of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days, emission were analyzed using the JIS A 1460 method. The second factor, type of resin, formaldehyde emissions and remaining were analyzed by the JIS A 1469 and the Perforatored EN 120 methods. For the third factor, thickness of particle board, samples with different thickness were used in the experiments. Results of the first factor indicated that the highest formaldehyde emission was obtained at the condition temperature of 20 °C followed by the emissions at the condition temperature of 35 °C and 40 °C, respectively. In addition, formaldehyde emissions decreased as the condition time increased. Results of the second factor showed that for the JIS A 1469 method, particleboards made with the 10L617A (UF:E1) resin emitted the lowest amount of formaldehyde. While particleboards made with the 10L631 (MUF:E2) resin emitted the lower amount of formaldehyde as compared to the particleboards made with the 10L686 (UF:E2) resin. For the Perforatored EN 120 method, formaldehyde remaining in samples made with UF:E0 was lowest followed by samples made with UF:E1 and UF:E2, respectively. Results for the third factor indicated that the thickness of particleboard has no significant effect on formaldehyde emission. This effect was found for both methods of analysis.

Graphene/NR composite was prepared in emulsion blending and the multilayer graphene was about 4-8 layers. Different mass fraction of this kind of graphene was mixed into NR in this work.The thermal conductivity of this compositive system was respected to be improved apparently since the high thermal conductivity of graphene. In this work, TEM(Transmission electron microscope) was used to observe the structure and morphology of the multilayer graphene. NETZSCH LFA was used to research the change of thermal conductivity with the fraction of grahene changing. DSC(differential scanning calorimetry) was used to research the structure change in the series of composites. The TEM results showed that the graphene we used is 4-5 layers. LFA had proved that the multilayer graphene has affected the thermal conductivity of matrix greatly and DSC also provided evidence to support the same views.

The graphene oxide/Fe3O4 composites were prepared by in situ precipitation method in this article. The microstructure and surface morphology of composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrum, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry was employed for the determination of specific capacitance and other electrochemical performances. It was shown that there was the chemical bonding force between GO and Fe3O4 particles. And the surfaces of GO were wrapped by the Fe3O4 particles precipitated on the surfaces of GO sheets and no impurities were detected. Furthermore, the specific capacitance of GO/Fe3O4 composite electrodes decreased as Fe3O4 particles reduced and the redox peaks became weaker owing to the addition of nonconductive Fe3O4 particles.

Polypyrrole/Graphene oxide composite material (PPy/GO) was synthesized using an in-situ chemical polymerization method. The formation of composite had been shown by the analysis of Fourier transfer of infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction data. Scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy clearly showed sheet-like layered structure of graphite oxide surrounded by polypyrrole. Electrochemical properties were characterized by electrochemical station. We demonstrated the intercalation of conducting polypyrrole into the graphite sheets, and that as electrodes for supercapacitor, the PPy/GO composites (GO0.54) with PPy to GO mass ratio of 5:3 showed a competitive capacitance of 337 F g-1 at a scan rate of 2 mV s-1 than that of PPy alone. Given the electrical and electrochemical properties, we prospect that the PPy/GO composites should find applications in supercapacitors.

Phosphoric acid /graphene composites were synthesized by a facile one-pot method in the oil-phase. The composites produced in this study have more active groups than reduced graphene oxide. Adsorption data indicated that active groups of the material had far greater influence on the adsorption capacity than inert functional groups of reduced graphene oxide.

Thermally reduced graphene oxide (graphene) filled natural rubber (NR) composites were fabricated by melt mixing method. Dielectric constant, dielectric loss and a.c conductivity data of the NR composites are reported. Highest conductivity of 3 x 10-4 S/m was obtained for the composite with 3 wt. % graphene with initial electrical percolation at a loading of 0.5 wt. %. High conductivity in the composite with 3 wt. % graphene is accounted by its homogeneity as observed in SEM micrographs.

Graphene/polyimide nanocomposites with different weight loadings were prepared by a solution compounding technique. Graphene was synthesized from graphite oxide that was fabricated by the Hummers method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) spectra and simultaneous thermal analysis were used for the microstructure analysis of the graphenes. Graphenes with single layer structure were synthesized successfully and had good solubility in water or other polar solvents due to a few functional groups on the graphene carbons. Graphenes have good thermal stability. Mechanical and tribological properties were studied for the graphene/polyimide composites. The composites have excellent strength and toughness with very small graphene loading level and the addition of graphene decreased the friction coefficient and wear rate of the composites.

Graphene nanosheets were prepared by chemical reduction of the exfoliated graphite oxide using sodium borohydride (NaBH4). The graphene/epoxy composites were separately fabricated in the absence or presence of imidazolium-based ionic liquids, and their dynamic thermomechanical and tensile properties were studied. TEM examinations show that graphene sheets are well dispersed in the epoxy resin and have strong interface adhesion with the matrix due to the π-π and/or cation-π interactions between graphene and imidazolium ions. The composite fabricated by assistance of ionic liquids shows larger increases in Youngs modulus, tensile strength, storage modulus and glass transition temperature compared to the composite without using ionic liquids. This work provides a method for the fabrication of multifunctional graphene-based polymer composites.

Cassava pulp (CP) is an inexpensive and broadly available waste by-product from cassava starch production. This by-product is basically constituted of cellulose fiber and residual starch. In this study, cassava pulp was mixed with natural rubber (NR) with various contents using two roll mills to obtain CP/NR composites. Natural rubber grafted glycidyl methacrylate (NR-g-GMA) was used as compatibilizer in CP/NR/NR-g-GMA composites. Sulfur conventional vulcanization was used. The composite specimens were prepared by compression molding. Mechanical properties and morphological properties of composites were investigated. The results showed that tensile strength was significantly increased with increasing content of cassava pulp up to 20 phr. However, when cassava pulp was increased more than 30 phr, tensile strength was slightly decreased. Elongation at break of NR composites was not changed with increasing cassava pulp. The modulus of NR composites was increased with increasing cassava pulp content. Morphological properties of CP/NR composites was elucidated as well.

The study about natural oils as processing aids in rubber was reported by several researchers for the past few years. The natural oils like rice bran oils, soybean oils, sunflower oils, vegetables oils and palm oils can be used as processing oils in rubber compounding [1-3]. These natural oils have been reported to have certain advantages compared to the petroleum based processing oils. In this study the potential of epoxidized palm oils (EPO) as additive and processing oils in carbon black filled styrene butadiene rubber was investigated. The main ingredients used were butadiene rubber (SBR), epoxidized palm oil (EPO) and carbon black. The vulcanized SBR rubber is then undergo several testing like swelling test, hardness and rebound resilience. An attempt was made to see whether the amount of EPO added to the SBR vulcanizates will affect the rebound resilience and swelling behaviour of the SBR vulcanizates. From this study, it was found that the compound contained higher EPO content tend to have lower rebound resilience, similar trend can be observed for hardness properties. While the crosslink density of the vulcanizates is decrease as the EPO content increases.

Oxygen plasma was utilized to etch the epitaxial graphene films grown on carbon-terminated 6H-SiC substrate. XPS spectra show that the intensity ratio between the graphene peak and SiC peak decreases with oxygen plasma etching time. It indicates that with increasing etching time from 0 to 42 s, the thickness of graphene dramatically decreases from eight to one monolayers following a first-order exponential decay function. Meanwhile, AFM images show that the ridges among domains are preferred to be etched by oxygen plasma and they will almost disappear after etched for 42 s. It indicates that the oxygen plasma will not decrease the mobility of graphene layer obviously when the graphene thickness is over two monolayers; however, further etching the graphene with thickness less than two monolayers will leads to significantly decrease the mobility due to the formation of many more defects.

Graphene-metal oxide composites as supercapacitor electrodes combine the large pseudocapacitance of metal oxides with the fascinating electrical and mechanical properties and large surface area of graphene. The synthetic methods for composites are reviewed, including in-siu synthesis, solution mixing, hydrothermal method, microware irradiation and electrochemical deposition. Among these techniques, the hydrothermal method offers an effective and simple way to anchor metal oxides on the 2D graphene sheet uniformly. Consequently, the composites exhibit high capacity, high rate capability and well reversibility, presenting promising prospects as supercapacitor electrode material.

Recently, Graphene oxide (GO) has attracted enormous interests due to its extraordinary properties. GO sheets are expected to find a variety of applications, such as GO-based composites materials and biotechnology. The nanocomposites of Poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and graphene oxide (GO) were successfully synthesized by in-situ polymerization. WAXD indicated that the PCL/GO composites formed an exfoliated structure. And Polarized Optical Image (POM) showed that the graphene oxide could be homogeneously dispersed in matrix. What’s more, we also studied the crystallization behavior of the pure PCL and PCL/GO nanocomposites as well as the effects of graphene oxide as the nucleation agent.

Graphene oxide nanoplate-MnO2composites have been synthesized by oxidizing part of the carbon atoms in the framework of graphene oxide nanoplates at ambient temperature. The composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Their microstructures and morphologies have affected their electrochemical properties. Compared with MnO2nanoparticles, the nanocomposite prepared reveals better electrochemical properties as a supercapacitor electrode material.

Ultra thin graphene oxide (GO)/polyvinyl alcohol and graphene-polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin composite films were fabricated by electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly and spinning coating methods. The assembling and coating process were traced with UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and the morphology of the formed ultra thin films was observed under scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the adsorption value of the GO based composite films linearly increased as the number of layers increased. The ultra thin graphene oxide/polyvinyl alcohol and graphene-polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin composite films have layered structure with high tensile strength because of the incorporation of GO. These strong ultra thin films have potential applications in coating, sensor and electrochemical devices.

Graphene oxide (GO) was used as inorganic fillers to enhance the mechanic properties of graphene oxide/poly(vinyl alcohol) composite hydrogels that were prepared by freeze/thaw method. The structure and properties of the composite hydrogels were characterized. Since GO was well dispersed in polymer matrix, the composite hydrogels showed an outstanding mechanical improvement. Significant increase in Young's modulus and compressive strength was achieved, indicating a good load transfer between fillers and matrix.

The graphene/poly(vinyl alcohol) nancomposites with enhanced filler-matrix interfacial interaction were fabricated via water-blending partially reduced graphene oxide (PRGO) and poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA). The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray Diffraction(XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), thermogravimetry(TG). The results showed that the graphene nanosheets were homogeniously dispersed in the PVA matrix and enhanced interfacial adhesion was greatly enhanced due to new covalent linkage and hydrogen-bonding between graphene and PVA backbone. The mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposites were significantly improved at low graphene loadings. An 116% increase in tensile strength and a 19°C improvement of onset thermal degradation temperature were achieved by the addition of only 0.8 wt% graphene.

The nanofiber based filtering media, made up of fibers of diameter less than 1000 nm, have been discovered as new filtering media for effective filtrations. The present study has been made of the influence of various process parameters on the fibrillation characteristics of Lyocell fibers which focuses on how the Lyocell fiber changes with the intensity of beating. Meanwhile the drainage properties and media properties of Lyocell fiber with different beating degree are characterized. The results show that the length, diameter, distortion and degree of fibrillation of Lyocell fiber changes obviously by beating, and a mass of nano-fibril appeared after intensive beating. The Lyocell fiber is cut off rapidly at first, and then fibrillateion starts to appear during the process of beating. At the same time, comparing with the length of the fiber, the beating degree of Lyocell fiber is more sensitive to the degree of fibrillation. What’s more, the drainage time of Lyocell fiber with strongly beating is over ten times than that of the original or ratherish beaten one; Comparing with the media made from original or light beaten pulp, media thickness made from the strongly beaten fiber decreases almost two times, tensile strength increases nearly four times, and air permeability decreases about seventy times.This study has shed some light on the major properties of Lyocell fiber and paves the way for further application of Lyocell fiber in filed of high precision filtration media.
