The agriculture waste material can give benefit to many production industries. The studied crop is corn (Zea Mays)stalk. The objective of this work was to analysis the chemical composition; to study chemical pulping and papermaking properties of corn stalk and; to investigate the fiber morphology of properties of those crops. Firstly, the chemical composition of corn stalk were determined and compared with other non-woods. After that, chemical corn stalk was conducted in this analysis followed the physical and mechanical properties. The result showed that, corn stalk have cellulose (39.0%) and lignin content is the lowest (7.3%) content rather than other composition. In chemical pulping, reached high pulp yields had been produced and the strength properties: tear index, tensile index, burst and fold verified that they were of an acceptable quality for papermaking. This crop morphology was observed by Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM), which showed a condensed composition of fiber structure. This study can developed a friendly product and promote the green technology, suitable to be used as an alternative pulp in paper making industry.Keywords:Fiber, Corn stalk, Composition, Green technology, Pulp and paper making.

This project investigated the use of facile pulping methods to produce pulp from mixed bio-plantation waste fibres using sodium hydroxide, ethanol and garbage enzyme. Papers were successfully made from mixture of corn husk fibres with other bio-based green fibres such as banana stems and pineapple leaves. Soda pulping was found to be efficient in converting the cellulosic bio-fibres to the pulps used for paper making. The papers produced have low tensile strength, high water absorption, high bio-decomposition and degradation rate, as compared to commercial papers. SEM observation revealed that paper made from mixed bio-fibres have lightly cross-linked structures compared to heavily cross-linked or compact network structures found in commercial papers. The paper can be used in applications that require high water absorbency. The paper making process is more environmental friendly as it reduces the usage of wood fibres and hence reduces the environmental problem caused by deforestation.

Homemade water in water cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) emulsion was applied in cigarette paper pulp as dry strengthening agent with other strengthening agent. Good collaborative effect was achieved when CPAM was used in bleached wheat straw pulp with strengthening agent E and with cationic additives L as paper pulp strengthening agent. It was also showed that distinct strengthening effect was obtained when CPAM emulsion was applied in mixture of bleached needle kraft pulp (NBKP) and wheat straw pulp, breaking length and tearing index of cigarette handsheet made of mix pulp was respectively increased by 22.2% and17.0% when the dosage of CPAM was 0.8% of dry fiber. Through analysis of cigarette handsheet section scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photos, strengthening mechanism of CPAM emulsion to cigarette paper pulp was preliminary studied.

The study aimed to describe the alkaline treatment advantage to remove ash component from natural rice straws. Most of the ash component in the rice straw is silica. High ash content is particularly harmful to cutting tools and to chemical to recovery systems in the pulp paper industry. In this study, the silica content has been removed simply through by immersion process in the 5% sodium hydroxide solution to obtain de-silicated rice straw. The study revealed the effectiveness of this alkaline process and the compatibility in commercial practice. The rice straw pulping is considered competitively to complement the global demand of raw material in paper production. Therefore, the treated rice straw plays an important role in providing raw material in the form of wood and rice straw blend feedstock for pulp and paper industry.

Pulp from the oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) was extracted via Alkaline Peroxide Pulping (APP). The pulping process was conducted through three main steps; dewaxing of EFB, impregnation of alkaline peroxide (AP) into EFB and refining of biomass to finally produce the pulp. The varying peroxide levels and number of impregnation stages were found to affect the refining energy consumption and the properties of the resultant pulp and paper. Diagnosis by electron microscopic imaging revealed a strong correlation between paper properties development and paper surface morphologies. By multiplying the stages of the low alkaline peroxide level (2:2.5% AP) impregnation, refining energy could be reduced by 30% while improving brightness and paper mechanical properties. Higher alkaline peroxide level (4:5% AP) could reduce the refining energy by 50% while still improving brightness. Beyond these AP levels (8:10% AP), refining energy could be reduced by 67% by increasing the number of impregnation stages, with positive effects on brightness and paper mechanical properties. The findings suggest that increasing the AP impregnation stages had exposed more active sites to react with AP. The enhanced AP accessibility to EFB structures facilitated mechanical fibrillation of EFB vascular bundles through the refining process. The proper synergy between AP and the adopted mechanical refining was the factor that triggered the liberation of nanocells from EFB biomass and this had ultimately improved paper properties.

In this article, Fenton oxidation treatment technology was employed to the improving of quality of post treated wastewater from pulp & paper mills in order to increase the recycling ratio of final treated wastewater. The reaction conditions were optimized through single-factor experiments and the removal of color were tested for the optimizing. It was found in this study that the color of Fenton oxidation treated water was variegated with the extending of settling time. The optimized conditions were: Dosage of H2O2 was 682.1mg/L(30% m/m), 1.5 times theoretical consumption, 205mg/L FeSO47H2O (H2O2:FeSO4=15:1), the initial pH and the reaction time were 4.5 and 40min, respectively. The removal of the color and COD were 51.3% and 80% after Fenton treatment. GC-MS analysis shown that the contents of organic extracts and most of organic compounds reduced significantly after the oxidational treatment.

Both water repellency and water vapour barrier properties were endowed at paper surface by coating with beeswax-chitosan latex. It was found that the water vapour transmission rate of coated paper decreased as the drying temperature increased. However, water contact angle was not affected with it. Although the surface morphology deformed at high drying temperature, the roughness values maintained at micro-scale. Further analysis indicated that the water vapour barrier property of coated paper was influenced by the density of the coating layer.

The physical structure of coating layer have an important influence on transferring and setting of the printing ink. In this study, the effect of pigment on surface microstructure and surface free energy was investigated. The findings indicated that the pigment affected the pore size, depth and distribution of the coated paper surface. Kaolin pigment compared with calcium carbonate pigment was good to improve the paper surface smoothness. Surface free energy of kaolin pigment coating was higher than calcium carbonate pigment coating, which showed that surface wettability of coating with kaolin pigment was better than calcium carbonate pigment.

The treatment on the secondary biochemical effluent of pulp and paper wastewater by Fenton oxidation was studied and the influence of H2O2dosage, Fe2+dosage, pH and reaction time on the treatment effect was investigated by the orthogonal test and single-factor test. The treatment effect was eminent when the H2O2dosage was 3.75mmol/L, Fe2+dosage was 3.20mmol/L, pH was 4.00 and the reaction time was 80.00min. The removal rate of UV254and chromaticity significantly increased as H2O2dosage was 1.88 ~ 3.75mmol /L, but the COD removal rate declined as H2O2dosage was more than 2.81mmol/L; each removal rate increased and then decreased slightly with the increase of Fe2+dosage, each removal rate dropped obviously as pH was more than 5.00; within 80.00min, the removal rate increased significantly, it changed little with the continuous increase of reaction time. Under the optimal conditions, the COD removal with Fenton oxidation was more effective and its removal rate could achieve 88.33%, it was advantageous compared with ozone oxidation; but the elimination effect of UV254and chromaticity to pulp and paper wastewater with ozone oxidation was better, the two removal rate achieved 83.70% and 92.00% in a short time, respectively. Although it could reach such a removal effect by Fenton oxidation, it did not have the superiority in reaction time.

Application in paper pulp as dry strengthening agent of homemade water in water cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) emulsion was studied. Good collaborative effect was achieved when Homemade CPAM was used in bleached wheat straw pulp with strengthening agent E and with cationic additives L as paper pulp strengthening agent. It was also showed that distinct strengthening effect was obtained when homemade CPAM emulsion was applied in mixture of wood pulp which was needle bleached kraft pulp (NBKP) and straw pulp, breaking length and tearing index of hand sheet made of mix pulp was respectively increased by 22.2% and17.0% when the dosage of CPAM was 0.8% of dry fiber. Through analysis of handsheet section scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photos, strengthening mechanism of CPAM emulsion to paper pulp was preliminary studied.

The application of hydrated calcium silicate as filler in paper from wheat straw pulp is studied in this paper. It shows that that with the increase of dosage of hydrated calcium silicate, the stiffness of paper improves, and the whiteness and the printing color density of paper improve, but the tightness and tensile strength of paper decrease. When the dosage of CPAM is 0.45 g/kg, the tightness, tensile strength, tearing index, whiteness and printing color density reach the large value. Paper ash content increased with the increase of amount of hydrated calcium silicate, but paper ash gains is not big after the dosage of hydrated calcium silicate reaches 20%.

The Paper studied the effects of pigments and base paper on binder migration and affected factors. The z-direction distribution of the coating binder which was tagged with Br in coating layer and its concentration in coating surface were examined quantitatively by using SEM-EDXA and ESCA analysis. The results showed that the increase of the ratio of calcium carbonate in the pigment content, coating surface binder concentration increased, and coating surface binder concentration increased with the increase of particle size of pigments. The result also indicated to small base paper absorbency, coating surface has high binder migration level, the coating layer bottom (base paper direction) has low binder concentration. To high absorbency base paper, the opposite is true.

Due to the presence of recalcitrant organic compounds, the pulp and paper effluents after treatment by conventional biological processes still contain high concentration of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and colored substances and do not satisfy the national emission standard. The objectives of this work are to present the research process on environmental materials with application of ozone-based technologies in removal of characteristic pollutants in pulp and paper effluents and suggest the feasible development trend. In this work, basic mechanisms of degradation of organic pollutants by ozone-based technologies in the presence of environmental materials as catalyst are described. The removal efficiencies of characteristic pollutants commonly found in pulp and paper effluents, such as absorbable organic halogens (AOX), resin and fatty acids, phenolic compounds, lipophilic wood extractives and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), are presented.

Tertiary treatment wascarried out to treat pulp and paper effluent from secondary treatment processby a three-dimensional electrode system equipped with modifiedbentonites as powdery electrode. The cetyl trimethylammonium bromide modified bentonite (CTAB-bent) and hydroxy-aluminum pillaredorganic bentonite (OH-Al-CTAB-bent) were synthesized and characterized by XRDand FTIR spectroscopy analysis.The impacts such as the dosage of particle electrode, electrolysis times,current density were on the COD removal efficiency and decolorization effect ofeffluent were also investigated. The results showed that the experimentscarried out by three-dimensional electrode system with OH-Al-CTAB-bent weresufficient for the COD and color removal efficiency. A current density of 30mA/cm2, electrolysis time of 40min, and the particle electrodedosage of 1.6g/L were selected as an optimum conditions that allows fast andlow cost treatment. The effluent can achieve the discharge standard of waterpollutants for pulp and paper industry (GB3544-2008) after electrolysis.

A novel hollow microsphere plastic pigment was prepared by the soap-free seeded emulsion polymerization. This pigment, with polyacrylate as core and with polystyrene as shell (PA/PSt) had hollow structure after dryness. The latex was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), and particle size analysis. The synthetic pigment was applied in the paper coating, and its influence on the printablility of the coated paper was investigated. The results show that the overall properties of the coated paper can be effectively improved when the clay in the base formulation is replaced by a small amount of hollow microsphere plastic pigment.

Fibers of dissolved air flotation rejects were been carboxymethylated to make dry strengthening agent. The effects of carboxymethylated time on carboxyl content, water retention value and physical properties of paper sheets were discussed. The effects of pH, dose of additive agent and additive aluminum sulfate on paper properties were discussed. The result show that carboxyl content and water retention values increased with the increasing of carboxymethylated time according to the research. IR analysis indicates that carboxymethyl has been connected to the surface of fibers. SEM micrographs shown that fibers were intergraded more closely benefit from the addition of dry strengthening agent. Tensile index, burst index and folding endurance respectively increased by 90.1% 101.8% and 833.3% on the condition: the additive agent amount 3%, pH 5, additive aluminum sulfate 0.5% of original pulp. Tensile index, burst index and folding endurance respectively increased by 74.0%, 87.8% and 877.8% when the carboxymethylated time was 110min for recycled pulp. This paper can be used as the theoretical basis for reusing of fiber of dissolved air flotation rejects.

In present time, recycled paper from xerographic and laser-printed wastepaper plays an important role as alternatives to paper from virgin pulp because of their good pulp quality and high amount of wastepaper each year. This type of paper is classified as Mixed Office Wastepaper (MOW). The xerographic and laser-printed inks are usually called “toner” which its formulation is different from conventional ink. This work aimed to investigate paper recycling by flotation deinking process. The flotation experiments were conducted using SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) and Triton X-100 (C14H22O(C2H4O)n). The experimental results demonstrated that ink removal was more efficient with the use of non-ionic surfactant (Triton X-100) than anionic surfactant (SDS). The efficiency of ink removal was determined by ERIC and the pulp’s brightness. In addition, the quality of de-inked pulps was evaluated by pulp physical properties such as burst strength, tear strength and tensile strength.

In this paper, a kind of sizing synergist,AKD,cationic rosin(CRS) and oil resistance agent were mixed in different proportions, we make it as a kind of new water repellent agent ,and for internal sizing. The best dosage and the composite ratio of the synergist, AKD, cationic rosin and oil resistance agent was discussed mainly in this experiment. And then the copy paper were tested of the substanceweight and contact angle, and compared with the water resistance when the domestic water repellent agent or AKD was added alone. Conclusions of this experiment are following: the optimal conditions were that the mass ratio of AKD and CRS is 6:4, the additive level of AKD and the cationic rosin is 6% (based on dry weight of pulp), the quantity of the sizing synergist is 0.5% , and no oil resistance agent was added, the effect of water resistance is best.

In this paper, the domestic old book paper(DOBP) was subjected to deinking process. Surface and colloid characterisitics of DOBP deinking pulp(DIP) system was investigated. The relation between surface and colloid characterisitic changes and efficiency of deinking (brightness and residual ink particles content) was studied. Technical conditions that affect the deinking pulp’s colloid chemical behavior were also analyzed here.The results showed that colloid-chemical behavior of DOBP deinking system could be changed during the deinking process. The colloid-chemical behavior, such as Zeta potential and surface tention, had a certain corresponding relation with deinking efficiency of DOBP deinking system. When Zeta potential of the deinking system was more great, and surface tension was more low in a certain range(Zeta potential was -17.0~ -16.0mV and surface tension was 59.0~61.0mN/m), brightness and ink removal efficiency of DOBP will be improved.

High consistency refining (HCR) and low consistency refining (LCR) of unbleached Masson’s pine kraft pulps for sack paper were studied in this article. The properties of their refined pulp and handsheet were analyzed comparatively. The results showed a high consistency refining was more suitable for sack paper with unbleached Masson’s pine kraft pulp than a low consistency refining. High consistency refining is of advantage to retain the fiber length. The tear index of the handsheet of high consistency refining were higher than that of low consistency refining. The TtensileT TenergyT Tabsorption (TEA)T index and air permeability of the handsheet of high consistency refining which were crucial properties of sack papers were better, though higher tensile index could be obtained with low consistency refining.

The intention of this paper is to review of some recent innovative novelties about paper and board pigment coating raw materials. First an overview is given of “traditional” coating raw materials and the coating process. Then new starch based pigments and binders as well as novel plastic pigments are reviewed regarding their effect on coated paper properties. Finally it is concluded that further innovations and research are needed.

To enhance printing qualities, this study used refluxed silica (SiO2) from rice husk by hydrochloric acid (HCl) at different molarities and reaction times as coating agent for printed paper. Characterization of the refluxed silica from 2M HCl 120 min elucidated the purity of 98.7% and amorphous structure. Particle size of the silica exhibited uniform size of 3 μm and the color measurement (CIE L*a*b*) indicated 94.79+0.48+1.24, whiteness and color difference (E) were 84.85, 3.28, respectively. The coating agent was prepared by water-based varnish of acrylic resin mixed with the synthesized silica at different proportions: 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 (%wt), and later was applied on 170 g/m2-white kraft papers. The results showed that the water-based coating varnish with silica exhibited an increase of viscosity as increasing the amount of the silica. Printing qualities indicated that the vanished printed paper with 1.0% silica elucidated the highest details in shadow tone and text (font) sharpness. The color gamut yielded a wider scope than the printed papers which were varnished with the silica at 0.0%, 0.5% and 1.5%. Nonetheless, the color density showed insignificant difference to 1.5% silica varnished paper.

This paper describes the precipitated calcium carbonate filler applied to paper industry, which was prepared by adding a specific crystal control agent. And a series of influencing factors in carbonation process was studied, such as carbonization temperature, concentration of milk of lime, carbon dioxide concentration and the crystal shape control dosage. Therefore the optimum conditions for preparation of chrysanthemum-shaped crystalline calcium carbonate were determined.

The physical structure and chemical properties of coating layer have an important influence on transferring and setting of the printing ink. In this study, the effect of pigment on coating layer structure and surface properties was investigated. The surface topography was explored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The findings indicated that the pigment affected the pore size, depth and distribution of the coated paper surface. The conclusions were drawn that coating could improve coating surface topography and calcium carbonate pigment compared with kaolin pigment was not good to the paper surface properties, which resulted in high roughness, low paper gloss, high ink absorption and low paper surface efficiency.

In this paper, the effect of the charge of hydrophilic and lipophilic nanosized TiO2 on the optical properties and printability of coated paper was investigated. The parameters including brightness, opacity, surface strength and sizing degree were used to evaluate the optical properties and printability of coated paper. The effects of hydrophilic and lipophilic TiO2 on the properties of coated paper were discussed. It was shown that the optical properties and printability of coated paper increase persistently with the change of nanosized TiO2 charged from 5% to 15%. Once the charge of nanosized TiO2 was over 15%, the main properties of coated paper took on a downward tendency. The properties of coated paper were related to the surface properties of nanosized TiO2 samples. It was found that the lipophilicity of nanosized TiO2 sample played a more important role in the improvement of the coated paper properties, which was believed to be based on the fact that lipophilic nanosized TiO2 could be well compatible with the binders used in the paper coating.

The culture of Chinese white spirit is time-honored, and it’s loved by all Chinese people, so it’s also important of white spirit packaging. The paper puts forward a new and green solution of white spirit packaging with paper bottle, it’s made with mulberry/rice paper and animal blood. The paper bottle is light and green, and increases the white spirit’s nutrition value. There are several physical and chemical tests in the paper just to justify the new bottle’s performance. Physical performance test includes appearance defect test, compression and stacking test, impact resistance test, water impact strength test, permeability test and so on. Chemical performance evaluation includes stability, compatibility and endurance.

AKD is an important internal size for paper pulp fiber. With recycled economy development, regenerated paper fiber becomes an important resource. In this paper, AKD is used as a modification aid by internal sizing method. It shows that the change of the dosage of AKD influences regenerated paper fiber Cobb value, but has no influence to paper surface strength. The proper pH value is from 7 to 9. The temperature has no influence to regenerated paper fiber Cobb value and paper surface strength. Appropriate modified starch is good for AKD modification fiber and increase of the surface strength of paper made from modified fiber by AKD. Amphoteric starch is better than cationic starch. Other added substances such as PEI, MPEI and PAE can improve the modification of paper fiber modified by AKD. So the adsorption of modified paper fiber decrease and the surface strength of paper modified fiber increase.

Different degrees of high degree of substitution cationic starch (HCS) were prepared and applied in paper coating. Effects of HCS on coating properties and coated paper properties were investigated, and the comparison of effects of HCS and PDMDAAC was made. The results show that the best amount of HCS in coating formula is between 2% and 4%. When the amount of HCS is 4%, whiteness of coated paper was the highest. The color density was the highest when the amount of HCS is about 4% and the degree of substitution is 0.64. HCS with degree of substitution 0.849 is better than PDMDAAC in some respects, and the print image density achieved satisfactorily.

The object of this work is to evaluate the optimal process of stickies removal on steam-explosion pulping from recovered paper. OCC (Old Corrugated Container), offset paper and coated art paper are presented for steam-explosion treatment. The parameters tested by single-factor tests are: liquor, explosion pressure, heat preservation time, and the charge of sodium hydrate and sodium silicate. The criterion used to characterize the stickies removal efficiency is the consistence of macrostickies and DCS in pulp after treatment. The compositional analysis are achieved the optimal explosion conditions. The use of steam explosion would be desirable in dealing with recovered paper.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of drying condition on the binder distribution and characterize the binder migration in the method of numerical and visual analysis by Scanning Electrical Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope (LSCM). In this study, Rhodamine B was used to stain the binder and as the probe to characterize z-directional distribution of the binder using LSCM. The results implied that it was reliable and effective method using LSCM to characterize the z- directional distribution of binder and analyze the influence of dry condition on binder migration. It could be concluded that the dry temperature played an important effect on binder distribution in coated paper and high dry temperature accelerated binder migration to the coating surface, however low drying temperature made binder migrate towards the interior of base paper. Moderate drying is good to binder distribution and coating layer forming.

In this paper, Water glass and sulfuric acid were used as raw materials to do the synthesis of hydrated silica by the method of precipitation, and then hydrated silica is applied in paper coating. By examining the changes of the coated paper’s various properties to study the effects of different reaction conditions to the final products. And then we obtained a optimal synthesis conditions: sulfuric acid concentration 25%, reaction time 50min, reaction temperature 80°C, sodium silicate modulus 2.8, stirring speed 150r/min, the relative amount of sodium sulfate content compared to SiO2 is 25% .And at last the outward appearance of the hydrated silica and the structural changes in paper coating were observed by scanning electron microscopy.

As one of the main emission sources of PCDD/Fs, the pulp and paper industry has always been public concerns. In China, the consumption of non-wood fiber as raw material of pulp accounts for a relatively larger proportion in the total productivity. Here, the unintentionally produced PCDD/Fs emissions of five Chinese non-wood pulp and paper mills were investigated. The results showed that the increment of PCDD/Fs after bleaching with chlorine was about 1.71-28.19 times in pulp and 3.96-28.82 times in wastewater based on the existing technologies. In order to reduce the unintentional production of PCDD/Fs, the BAT/BEP transformation program was proposed as cleaner production initiatives featured by less or free use of chlorine in bleaching process, and evaluated by reduction effects and costs. The study showed the application of Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) sequences in bleaching process with improving technologies in other production stages would effectively decrease the generation of PCDD/Fs, other pollutant load as well as the water consumptions.

Effect of wood pulp fiber and filler on the mechanical properties and harmful substance of reconstituted tobacco sheet were investigated. Experiments result showed that added lower lignin content pulp reduced phenols produced by reconstituted tobacco sheet combustion. As addition of bleached hardwood kraft pulp and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) increased, the amount of phenols release was dropped dramatically, but in order to ensure the normal operation of papermaking mechine, wood pulp and PCC addition should not be more than 20%. If wood pulp addition was above 20%, it had negative effect on the bulk, carbon monoxide and cigarette smoke flavor of reconstituted tobacco sheet; when PCC addition was more than 20%, it has negative effect on the normal operation of papermaking mechine.

The wettability of the carbon composite electrode on paper substrate was studied using contact angle measurement. Y-Shield HSF54 carbon composite material were coated on paper substrates with a mask using squeegee coating technique. Contact angles of the ten polar probe liquids with the HSF54 electrodes were measured using a customed-built image acquisition system. With the contact angles obtained for each probe liquid placed on the electrodes, the surface tension of the electrodes was determined using Fox-Zisman theory. The result showed that the critical surface tension of HSF54 carbon composite electrodes was 37.2 mN/m which is considered to be moderately hydrophobic.

Fluorocarbons were added into the mixture of modified starch and sodium alginate to get uniform coating solution, and the solution was then coated on the surface of transparent paper. The color as well as grease barrier property of paper at different coating weight were studied. The results showed that color under different coating weights were not significantly different from base paper. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) diagram showed the surface of paper became smoother and more homogeneous as the coating weight increased. The grease barrier property of coated papers were significantly improved compared with base paper according to Tappi-559 kit test. A highest grease rating number of 12 was obtained when the coating weight became 3.3 g/m2. The dynamic changes in contact angle studies revealed that the contact angle of the base paper was continuously decreased from 29.41 °minutes to 23.46 °within 20, the contact angles of coated papers were significantly increased, and reaching a steady state within 2min with the maximum rate of contact angle change was of merely 0.06 ° / min.

A mulberry paper has been used to produce many consumer products such as lantern, card, packaging and decorating articles. Similar to other cellulosic materials, the mulberry paper bears abundant hydroxyl groups on its surface. Besides easily ignited, it can absorb water or humidity. To improve its thermal stability and to reduce deterioration caused by moisture adsorption, the mulberry paper was coated with a flame-retardant substance which was monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and a hydrophobic substance which was poly (methylhydrogen siloxane) (PMHS). The coating was conducted by immersing the mulberry paper in coating solution for 2 min followed by drying at 50 °C for 30 min. By varying a weight ratio of the PMHS and MAP, the PMHS:MAP weight ratio of 10:10 was found to be the optimum coating solution. The coated mulberry paper had good thermal property according to the thermogravimetric analysis. The uncoated mulberry paper showed residue of about 21% while the coated mulberry paper showed the increased residue of more than 50%. The burning test revealed that the coated mulberry paper was self-extinguished after removal of the ignition source while complete burning was observed on the uncoated paper. Moreover, it was water repellent with a water contact angle of 101.48 ± 5.81 degrees.

Using Poplar P-RC APMP as raw materials for culture paper making, the effect of conventional papermaking process and P-RC APMP fines-calcium carbonate co-flocculation process on the P-RC APMP culture paper properties were studied. The result showed that, comparing to the conventional papermaking process, co-flocculation process can supply paper with better strength properties, bulk and whiteness. When precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) or ground calcium carbonate (GCC) were added respectively in conventional papermaking process, the PCC supplied handsheets with better bulk and whiteness, while GCC supplied handsheets with better strength properties. In the co-flocculation process, the effects of PCC and GCC were nearly the same in strength properties and bulk of handsheets, but PCC was more beneficial for whiteness. SEM images showed that PCC distributed more evenly in the fiber network, and well-bonded with fiber network. The particle size of GCC is relatively small, mainly filled in the fiber network and wrapped on the fiber.

Rice husk is a form of agricultural biomass that provides an abundant silicon dioxides source. This study used rice husk ash as a material to prepare paper coating. Silica powder has been synthesized by the refluxing of rice husk ash with HCl 1,2 and 3 M at different time (60 and 120 min.) The silicon dioxide extraction yield reached 85% and was effect by concentration of HCl solution and reaction time. The structure of the obtained silica powder were characterized by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Particle size distribution (PSD), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), CIE L*a*b* (Visible spectrophotometer) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The highest purity of silica sample were 98.7% SiO2, CIE L*a*b* = 94.79 +0.48 +1.24, ∆E ≈ 3.28 (white powder) and 2Ɵ = 22o (silica). Particle had a uniform size less than 3 μm. The paper coating was made from acrylic resin mixed with synthesized silica that refluxing by HCl 2 M 120 min at different ratio (2%, 4% and 6%) and paper coated with a gravure printing machine. The qualities of paper coating were analyzed from viscosity, Transparency (Density) and color gamut of inkjet printing. The paper coating that mixed synthesized silica from rice husk 4% was highest qualities because have viscosity 358 ± 24.99ctp., Density = 0.19, and widely color gamut.

The focus of this study is to investigate the effect of carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) latex on the dynamic rheologcial properties of paper coating suspensions modified with nanosized particles. The elastic storage modulus G′ and the viscid loss modulus G′′ are used to evaluate the dynamic rheologcial properties of paper coating suspensions. The effects of different amount carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber latex on the flow parameters of paper coating suspensions are comparatively presented. It is shown that the dynamic elastic storage modulus G′ and viscid loss modules G′′ of paper coating suspensions increase with the SBR content change from 13% to 18%. The dynamic rheologcial properties are related to the strength of the network structure of paper coating suspensions. It is also found that the elastic storage modulus G′ of paper coating suspensions is larger than viscid loss modulus G′′, which indicates that paper coating suspensions in this investigation all behave like a viscoelastic solid.

This paper deals with the preparation of Plate-shaped Calcium Carbonate and Its Application in the Paper Coating. calcium oxide and carbon dioxide were used as major materials to preparetion the Plate-shaped Calcium Carbonate, The best reaction conditions as follows: w(CaO)：w（H2O）=1：5, V（CO2）：V（atmosphere）=1：2. Then use the Plate-shaped Calcium Carbonate in spreading. The results show that the Plate-shaped Calcium Carbonate is a high-performance product that can obviously enhance the paper’s smoothness, whiteness, air permeability, printing ink absorbance.

Effect of organic bentonite on rheological behavior of paper coating was studied. Organic bentonite was prepared by treating sodium bentonite with dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC) at the following conditions: DADMAC 20%, reaction time 3h, reaction temperature 80°C and pH 9. The results showed that shear stress and voscosity of coating enhance with increasing the amount of organic bentonite. In this testing, all of flow curves fitted Cross model very much, and rheologiclal properties showed the pseudoplastic fluid, characterized as obvious shear thinning .The bentonite modified with DADMAC could promote the rheological behavior of coating.

In this paper, soy protein papermaking process conditions as dry strength agents were studied. The results show that a part of the three parts of soy protein and a mixed system with a cationic starch alone, or cationic starch, soy protein, as compared to dry strength additives will significantly increase the strength. The optimum conditions were: pulp types E, defatted soy protein, dry vacuum drying method is 105°C, adding ways to add the pulp, the best reaction time was 10min, the optimum dosage of 2%. Soy protein sources are widely readily available, and environmentally friendly and easily biodegradable, paper dry strength agents as a good material.

Proper waste management in Malaysia is needed for the organic wastes such as pineapple leaf and cassava peel where affects the increase the amount of solid waste dump into landfill. Thus, to overcome this problem agro waste material can be constructed in many production industries to commercialize the use of alternative fibre for the paper industry. The main objective of this study is to demonstrate the use of fibrous in pineapple leaf and cassava peel by production of alternative fibre based on chemical properties and surface morphology characteristic. This study conducted for the chemical composition by analysed by TAPPI Test method, Chlorination method and Kuchner-Hoffner method. Every chemical components analyse; Cellulose (Kuchner-Hoofner), Holocellulose (Chlorination method), Hemicellulose (Chlorination method), Hemicellulose, Ash content (T211-om-93), Lignin content (T222-om-98) and Sodium Hydroxide soluble (T203-om-88). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe and determine the morphological characteristic of both crops. The result indicates that pineapple leaf more suitable for becoming an alternative fibre than cassava peels. Pineapple leaves have a high Holocellulose content (85.7%), cassava peels 66%, followed by Cellulose pineapple leaf (66.2%), cassava peels (37.9%). However, hemicellulose content in pineapple leaf (19.5%) less than cassava peels (37.0%). Lignin content of pineapple leaf is lower (4.2%) compared to cassava peels (7.52%) in this study. From SEM images, cassava peel contained abundance fibre such as hemicellulose and cellulose that is held by the lignin in it and Pineapple leaves give a condensed composition of fibre structure. The chemical compositions and morphology study of pineapple leaf and cassava indicate pineapple leaf have a high percentage to be used as an alternative pulp in paper making industry, promoting the green technology. However, cassava peels make some of properties that can also be through for the paper industry.

In this paper, the low-temperature (the maximum pulping temperature was less than 150°C) and conventional (the maximum pulping temperature was 165°C) kraft pulp of pinus kesiya and Dendrocalamus giganteus Munro were bleached by OQPaP. Then bleaching properties and paper properties of two kinds of bleached pulp were compared and evaluated respectively. The results showed that the strength indexes of the kraft pulp at low temperature were significantly higher than those of conventional pulp with lower viscosity.

This paper analyzes the delignification mechanism of wheat straw pulping process. The lignin removal of pulping process is left in black liquor. The higher the black liquor lignin content is, the bigger the lignin of paper pulp is removed. The relations of black liquor lignin content and alkali concentration to pulping time are described in detail. The results show that delignification process is divided into two stages: quick and slow stage. The lignin removal rate in the first stage is much higher than the second, that is, lignin has been removed more sufficiently after quick stage. In first stage, reaction order of delignification is 1.0, and 0.7 with respect to OH-, the activation energy is 38.62 kJ • mol-1. The latter delignification also belongs to the first-order reaction and 4.4 with respect to OH-, the activation energy is 75.56 kJ • mol-1. Apparently, slow stage needs to consume large amounts of energy to removal lignin.

The total sulfur rate of the coal sample was 4.973%, the inorganic sulfur content was more than 60%, which was the main component in the coal sample. The effect of grinding fineness, flotation pulp density, collector and frother on coal flotation desulfurization were investigated in this paper to remove the inorganic sulfur. The results showed that it reached to the optimum desulfurization rate 54.7% when the optimum grinding fineness was 39.20% -200 mesh rate, pulp concentration was 80 g/L, kerosene consumption was 1.4 kg/t, 2#oil loading was 100 g/t, and the total sulfur content reduced to 2.72%. The optimized flotation condition determined by orthogonal experiments was as follow: pulp density for 60 g/L, kerosene dosage of 1.4 kg/t, 2#oil consumption of 100 g/t. In this case, total sulfur content reduced to 2.19%, the total desulfurization rate and the inorganic desulfurization rate were 55.96% and 92.89%, respectively.

The stickies in pulp and paper machinery especially in the blankets will cause a lot of problems such as paper defects, increasing the time of machine shut down . Therefore, Inhibiting the Stickies of blanket is very important to regular production. In this study,we mainly studied on the inhibition of Stickies in the blanket with enzyme. The processed blanket was treated by several kinds of enzymes. The results showed that the optimum enzyme treatment conditions were obtained as followings:PH of 7, temperature of 50°C, 2×104U/g of cellulose enzyme, 2×103U/g of amylase and 104U/g of lipase. The blankets obtained better cleaning situation under this conditions.

With the improvement of environmental protection requirements, paper-making enterprises are imperative to eliminate pollution directly in production. This paper aims to adopt environment-friendly bleaching method, yield good quality pulp products. Op-Pa-P bleaching process of reed displacement cooking pulp is studied in this paper (O-oxygen, P-hydrogen peroxide, Pa-peracetic acid ). The experimental conditions of Op and Pa stage were optimized respectively. It included oxygen pressure, temperature, time in Op stage and charge of peracetic acid, temperature, time in Pa stage. The results show that the optimal technological conditions of Op are: 0.9Mpa, 100°C, 70min, Op stage can make brightness increase by 57.3%, viscosity decrease by 25% and KMnO4 number reduce to 2.6. Pa stage optimal conditions are Pa charge 1.5%, 70°C, 75min, brightness reached to 79.1 %ISO, KMnO4 number to 1.0, viscosity to 631mL.g-1. The brightness of P bleached pulp reached to 84.8%ISO, viscosity 601 mL.g-1, KMnO4 number 0.8.

Recovery and use of secondary fiber for paper production is increasing all over the word. In recovered paper recycling, stickies are the most detrimental among the contaminants, affecting both the process efficiency and the quality of the final product. In this study, StickAway enzyme was used to treat the old newspaper(ONP) pulps. The effect of enzymatic treatment on the macro and micro-stickies, the drainage property, as well as the formation of paper products were investigated. After treatment of samples with 3LU/g (o.d pulp) doses of enzymatic for 1.5 h, it was found that 14.6% of the micro-stickies could be removed. The cationic demand, turbidity value and particle size were decreased 7.23%, 14.4% and 6.02% respectively compared the control sample. Furthermore, enzymatic treatment also improved the drainage properties of pulp slurry and the formation of paper products. Results confirmed that under the optimal conditions, the StickAway enzyme show the excellent performance in the treatment of the stickies of recovered pulps.
