Vanadate materials are feasible cathodes for metal–ion batteries due to their stable layered structure, abundant valence states, and high capacity. However, much uncertainty still exists about precisely modulating intercalants to facilitate ion storage. Here, V2O5 pre‐intercalated with various transition metal ions M2+ (M═Ni, Co, Mn) are developed as model materials to analyze the coupling effect between guest ions and host material. Through density functional theory simulations, it is found that M2+ interacts with V–O chain via M 3d‐O 2p covalent bonds, and extended X‐ray absorption fine structure reveals the Ni─O interatomic distance at 1.56 Å shorter than Co─O (1.60 Å) and Mn─O (1.72 Å), suggesting the M–O band type with different covalency degree can optimize VOx polyhedron and local electronic structure. Furthermore, NiVO cathode materials with the smallest layer spacing shows higher redox voltage and better rate/cycling performance for Ca2+ storage than CoVO/MnVO, elucidating that Ni has stronger tendency to attract electrons and bonds with V–O layer tightly, thus supplying a reliable ion diffusion channel for Ca2+. Wearable electronics require lightweight and flexible batteries, of which lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries are of great interest due to their high gravimetric energy density. Nevertheless, flexible Li‐S batteries have unsatisfactory electrochemical performance owing to electrode fracture during repeated bending, the volume change of sulfur species and the severe shuttle effect. Binders play essential roles in these batteries but have always lacked attention. Herein, a self‐healing polyvinylpyrrolidone‐polyethyleneimine (PVP‐PEI) binder cross‐linked by hydrogen bonds, which also regulates polysulfide redox kinetics, is reported. The dynamic hydrogen‐bonding networks repair the cracks and ensure the integrity of the electrode while numerous polar groups such as CO and ‐NH2 suppress the shuttle effect by immobilizing polysulfides. Therefore, Li‐S batteries with the PVP‐PEI binder exhibit excellent cycling stability (a capacity decay rate of 0.0718% per cycle at 1 C after 450 cycles), an outstanding areal capacity of 7.67 mAh cm−2 even under a high sulfur loading (7.1 mg cm−2) and relatively lean electrolyte conditions (E/S ratio = 8 µL mg−1). Flexible Li‐S pouch cells using the PVP‐PEI binder show a stable performance for 140 cycles and a favorable capacity retention of over 95% after 2800 bending cycles, confirming its application potential in high‐performance flexible Li‐S batteries. Rechargeable alkali metal (i.e., lithium, sodium, potassium)‐based batteries are considered as vital energy storage technologies in modern society. However, the traditional liquid electrolytes applied in alkali metal‐based batteries mainly consist of thermally unstable salts and highly flammable organic solvents, which trigger numerous accidents related to fire, explosion, and leakage of toxic chemicals. Therefore, exploring non‐flammable electrolytes is of paramount importance for achieving safe batteries. Although replacing traditional liquid electrolytes with all‐solid‐state electrolytes is the ultimate way to solve the above safety issues, developing non‐flammable liquid electrolytes can more directly fulfill the current needs considering the low ionic conductivities and inferior interfacial properties of existing all‐solid‐state electrolytes. Moreover, the electrolyte leakage concern can be further resolved by gelling non‐flammable liquid electrolytes to obtain quasi‐solid electrolytes. Herein, a comprehensive review of the latest progress in emerging non‐flammable liquid electrolytes, including non‐flammable organic liquid electrolytes, aqueous electrolytes, and deep eutectic solvent‐based electrolytes is provided, and systematically introduce their flame‐retardant mechanisms and electrochemical behaviors in alkali metal‐based batteries. Then, the gelation techniques for preparing quasi‐solid electrolytes are also summarized. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives are presented.
