The challenge of continuous printing in high-efficiency large-area organic solar cells is a key limiting factor for their widespread adoption. A materials design concept for achieving large-area, solution-coated all-polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells with stable phase separation morphology between the donor and acceptor is presented. The key concept lies in inhibiting strong crystallization of donor and acceptor polymers, thus forming intermixed, low crystallinity, and mostly amorphous blends. Based on experiments using donors and acceptors with different degree of crystallinity, the results show that microphase separated donor and acceptor domain sizes are inversely proportional to the crystallinity of the conjugated polymers. This methodology of using low crystallinity donors and acceptors has the added benefit of forming a consistent and robust morphology that is insensitive to different processing conditions, allowing one to easily scale up the printing process from a small-scale solution shearing coater to a large-scale continuous roll-to-roll (R2R) printer. Large-area all-polymer solar cells are continuously roll-to-roll slot die printed with power conversion efficiencies of 5%, with combined cell area up to 10 cm2. This is among the highest efficiencies realized with R2R-coated active layer organic materials on flexible substrate.

In this work, the detailed morphology studies of polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT):fullerene(PCBM) and polymer(P3HT):polymer naphthalene diimide thiophene (PNDIT) solar cell are presented to understand the challenge for getting high performance all-polymer solar cells. The in situ X-ray scattering and optical interferometry and ex situ hard and soft X-ray scattering and imaging techniques are used to characterize the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) ink during drying and in dried state. The crystallization of P3HT polymers in P3HT:PCBM bulk heterojunction shows very different behavior compared to that of P3HT:PNDIT BHJ due to different mobilities of P3HT in the donor:acceptor glass. Supplemented by the ex situ grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and soft X-ray scattering, PNDIT has a lower tendency to form a mixed phase with P3HT than PCBM, which may be the key to inhibit the donor polymer crystallization process, thus creating preferred small phase separation between the donor and acceptor polymer.

Lithium metal batteries are next‐generation energy storage devices that rely on the stable electrodeposition of lithium metal during the charging process. The major challenge associated with this battery chemistry is related to the uneven deposition that leads to dendritic growth and poor coulombic efficiency (CE). A promising strategy for addressing this challenge is utilizing a polymer coating on the anodic surface. While several works in the past have evaluated polymer coatings, the requirements for polymer design are still unclear. In this work, the effect of polymer dynamics on lithium metal deposition is specifically investigated. Electrolyte (solvent) blocking perfluoropolyether polymer networks with evenly spaced H‐bonding sites of various strengths are designed, resulting in significant differences in the molecular ordering, as analyzed by X‐ray scattering measurements. The differences in the H‐bonding strength directly impact the mechanical properties of these materials, thus providing a controlled set of samples with a range of polymer dynamics for electrodeposition studies. Finally, a systematic evaluation of the lithium metal electrodeposition quality with these polymers as anodic coating shows that polymers with flowability or faster polymer dynamics exhibit higher CE. Metal, nitrogen‐doped carbon materials have attracted interest as heterogenous catalysts that contain MNx active sites that are analogous to molecular catalysts. Of particular interest is Ni,N‐doped carbon, a catalyst that is active for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO. Critical to the understanding of these materials is proof of single atomic sites and characterization of the environment surrounding the metal atom; however, directly probing this coordination remains challenging. This challenge is addressed by combining scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), single atom electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS). Through STEM imaging, atomic dispersion of Ni in the carbon framework is confirmed and image analyses are utilized to give semiquantitative estimates of neighbor distance distributions and site densities of Ni atoms. Atomic resolution EELS demonstrates that N and Ni are colocated at the single Ni atom sites suggesting Ni–N coordination. ToF‐SIMS reveals a distribution of NiNxCy− fragments that reflect the Ni–N bonding environments within Ni,N‐doped carbon. The fragmentation from Ni,N‐doped carbon is similar to Ni phthalocyanine, suggesting the existence of heterogenized, molecular‐like NiN4 active sites which motivates future studies that leverage insight from molecular catalysis design to develop next‐generation heterogeneous catalysts. Abstract: The introduction of oligomeric polystyrene (PS) side chains into the conjugated backbone is proven to enhance the processability and electronic properties of semiconducting polymers. Here, two series of donor and acceptor polymers are prepared with different molar percentages of PS side chains to elucidate the effect of their substitution arrangement on the all‐polymer solar cell performance. The observed device performance is lower when the PS side chains are substituted on the donor polymer and higher when on the acceptor polymer, indicating a clear arrangement effect of the PS side chain. The incorporation of PS side chains to the acceptor polymer contributes to the decrease in phase separation domain size in the blend films. However, the reduced domain size was still an order of magnitude larger than the typical exciton diffusion length. A detailed morphological study together with the estimation of solubility parameter of the pristine PS, donor, and acceptor polymers reveals that the relative value of solubility parameter of each component dominantly contributes to the purity of the phase separated domain, which strongly impacts the amount of generated photocurrent and overall solar cell performance. Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel source. However, natural gas wells typically contain considerable amounts of CO2, with on-site CO2 capture necessary. Solid sorbents are advantageous over traditional amine scrubbing due to their relatively low regeneration energies and non-corrosive nature. However, it remains a challenge to improve the sorbent's CO2 capacity at elevated pressures relevant to natural gas purification. Here, the synthesis of porous carbons derived from a 3D hierarchical nanostructured polymer hydrogel, with simple and effective tunability over the pore size distribution is reported. The optimized surface area reaches 4196 m2 g−1, which is among the highest of carbon-based materials, with abundant micro- and narrow mesopores (2.03 cm3 g−1 with d < 4 nm). This carbon exhibits a record-high CO2 capacity among reported carbons at elevated pressure (i.e., 28.3 mmol g−1 total adsorption at 25 °C and 30 bar). This carbon also shows good CO2/CH4 selectivity and excellent cyclability. Molecular simulations suggest increased CO2 density in micro- and narrow mesopores at high pressures. This is consistent with the observation that these pores are mainly responsible for the material's high-pressure CO2 capacity.
