Few studies examine the relationship between depression and use of specific tobacco and/or cannabis products among adolescents, young adults, and adults. We determined whether the odds of depression are greater among those who used specific tobacco and/or cannabis products and among co-users of tobacco and cannabis. Cross-sectional online survey of a national convenience sample of 13–40-year-olds (N = 6,038). The survey included depression screening and past 30-day use of specific tobacco and cannabis products (cigarettes; e-cigarettes, vaped cannabis, little cigars, cigarillos, cigars, hookah, chewing tobacco, smoked cannabis, edible cannabis, blunts). Analyses correspond to the total sample, and 13–17-, 18–24-, and 25–40-year-olds. Among 5,281 individuals who responded to the depression screener and nine product use questions, 1,803 (34.1 %) reported co-use of at least one tobacco product and one cannabis product in the past 30 days. Past 30-day co-use was associated with higher likelihood of screening positive for depression compared to past 30-day use of tobacco-only (aOR = 1.32, 1.06–1.65; 0.006) or cannabis-only (aOR = 1.94, 1.28–2.94; <0.001). Screening positive for depression was more likely among those who reported past 30-day use of e-cigarettes (aOR = 1.56; 1.35–1.80; <0.001), cigarettes (aOR = 1.24, 1.04–1.48; 0.016), chewed tobacco (aOR = 1.91, 1.51–2.42; <0.001), and blunts (aOR = 1.22, 1.00–1.48; 0.053) compared to those who did not report past 30-day use of these products. Among the 2,223 individuals who screened positive for depression, the most used two-product combination was nicotine e-cigarettes and smoked cannabis (614 individuals, 27.6 %). Screening positive for depression was more likely among past 30-day co-users versus past 30-day users of tobacco-only or cannabis-only. • This study revealed a substantial impact of smoking on COVID-19 outcomes. • Smokers have higher mortality and intensive care unit admission rates than never-smokers. • Smoking was a significant independent risk factor for severe COVID-19 outcomes. Current evidence suggests the potential heightened vulnerability of smokers to severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the clinical outcomes and mortality related to tobacco use in a cohort of hospitalized Brazilian COVID-19 patients. This retrospective cohort study analyzed adults hospitalized for COVID-19 in Brazil using the SIVEP-Gripe database (official data reported by public and private healthcare facilities for monitoring severe acute respiratory syndrome cases in Brazil). The inclusion criteria were patients over 18 years of age with a positive RT-qPCR test for SARS-CoV-2. The analysis focused on in-hospital mortality, considering smoking as an exposure variable, and included covariates such as age, gender, and comorbidities. Smoking history was collected from the self-reported field in the database. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, crude Odds Ratios, and multivariable binary logistic regression. This study included 2,124,285 COVID-19 patients, among whom 44,774 (2.1 %) were smokers. The average age of the smokers was higher than that of the never-smokers (65.3 years vs. 59.7 years). The clinical outcomes revealed that smokers had higher rates of intensive care unit admission (51.6 % vs. 37.2 % for never-smokers), invasive ventilatory support (31.5 % vs. 20.2 % for never-smokers), and higher mortality (42.7 % vs. 31.8 % for never smokers). In the multivariable analysis, smokers demonstrated a heightened risk of death (aOR 1.23; 95 % CI 1.19–1.25). This large populational-based cohort study confirms the current evidence and underscore the critical importance of recognizing smoking as a substantial risk factor for adverse outcomes in COVID-19 patients. • E-cigarette use intentions clustered around cigarette cessation and/or appealing e-cigarette-related reasons. • A-priori e-cigarette intentions were unrelated to uptake or amount of use following one-month unguided provision.. • Lack of cigarette cessation-related motives for e-cigarette use might not impact uptake and long-term use patterns. Electronic (e-)cigarettes may help adult cigarette smokers achieve cigarette cessation, depending on patterns of e-cigarette use. Among cigarette smokers who do not use e-cigarettes, it is unclear if and how a-priori intentions for use are related to uptake patterns. Longitudinal studies have focused on established e-cigarette users or adolescent and young adult populations exclusively. Within a nationwide randomized clinical trial (N = 638), adult cigarette smokers not currently using e-cigarettes were randomized (2:1) to receive (or not) one-month sampling of e-cigarettes. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed on an established 15-item measure assessing a-priori intentions for e-cigarette use to identify latent variables. Among those receiving e-cigarette products, regression models examined relationships between intentions and: 1) uptake (yes/no), 2) frequency (number of days per week), and 3) amount (puffing episodes per day) of e-cigarette use at one-month follow-up. Two factors emerged from the EFA: 1) cigarette-related intentions (e.g., cigarette cessation, no smell) and 2) novel appeal of e-cigarettes (e.g., flavors). Three items remained and were treated as separate intentions: "feels like cigarette smoking", "curiosity", and "affordability". In the final multivariable models, "feel like cigarette smoking" predicted more frequent e-cigarette use (β = 0.187, SE = 0.086, p = 0.03); however, none of the five factors/intentions were significantly associated with uptake or amount of use. For adult cigarette smokers not currently using e-cigarettes, a-priori intentions for using e-cigarettes might not be predictive of if or how these products will be used in the future, suggesting that motives may not drive use behavior. • Among unstably housed women, 69 % were current smokers and 58 % were daily smokers. • Cigarette smoking intensity was associated with past 7-days methamphetamine use. • Integrating cigarette smoking and methamphetamine use treatment for high-frequency cigarette smokers is warranted. Recent insights into substance use cessation suggest that outcomes short of long-term abstinence are clinically meaningful and may offer more realistic incremental goals, particularly for highly vulnerable individuals. With the goal of informing tobacco treatment programs, we examined distinct patterns of cigarette smoking and their association with the ongoing use of other substances in women who experience housing instability. We recruited participants from a longitudinal study of women experiencing housing instability. Between June 2017 and January 2019, participants completed six monthly survey interviews regarding social conditions and the use of multiple substances. We examined associations between cigarette smoking intensity, including number of cigarettes smoked per day, heavy smoking, and an increase in number of cigarettes smoked from the previous 30-days, and other substance use in the past 7-days. Of the 243 participants, 69 % were current smokers and 58 % were daily smokers. Number of cigarettes smoked per day (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.02, 95 % CI 1.00–1.03), heavy cigarette smoking, compared to none or light smoking (AOR 2.02, 95 % CI 1.46–2.79), and an increase in number of cigarettes smoked from the previous 30-days (AOR 1.06, 95 % CI 1.01–1.12) were all significantly associated with methamphetamine use in the past 7-days. Associations with other substance use were not as strong. In a sample of unstably housed women, where almost half used multiple substances, methamphetamine use was associated with higher cigarette smoking intensity. • 26.36 % of young adults who reported P30D use had used both tobacco and cannabis. • Poly co-users reported using e-cigarettes to quit cannabis more often than e-cigarette co-users. • Poly co-users used cannabis more for the taste than exclusive cannabis users. • Poly co-users used e-cigarettes because their friends do more often than dual tobacco users. This study examines differences in reasons for e-cigarette, cigarette, and cannabis use across exclusive, dual, co-, and poly co-users. Participants were 645 young adults who reported past 30-day (P30D) use of e-cigarettes, cigarettes, or cannabis at wave 14 (Fall, 2021) of the Texas Adolescent Tobacco Marketing and Surveillance System (TATAMS). Exclusive users reported P30D use of one product, dual users reported P30D use of e-cigarettes and cigarettes, co-users reported use of cannabis and one tobacco product, and poly co-users reported P30D use of all three products. Participants were asked if they agreed with a series of reasons for using their respective products. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between reasons for use and pattern of use, controlling for sex, race/ethnicity, and lifetime product use. 26.36 % of P30D users reported cannabis and tobacco use. Poly co-users were more likely to report using e-cigarettes because their friends do than e-cigarette co-users (aRRR = 2.64; 95 %CI = 1.19–5.83) and dual tobacco users (aRRR = 5.11; 95 %CI = 1.73–15.12). Poly co-users were more likely to smoke cigarettes while drinking alcohol (aRRR = 4.68; 95 %CI = 1.06–20.72) or to experience a pleasurable buzz (aRRR = 5.48; 95 %CI = 1.62–18.57) than exclusive cigarette users. Poly co-users more often reported using cannabis for taste (aRRR = 3.13; 95 %CI = 1.51–6.51), because their friends use it (aRRR = 2.19; 95 %CI = 1.08–4.42), and while drinking alcohol (aRRR = 2.13; 95 %CI = 1.03–4.41) than exclusive cannabis users. Given that reasons for use differ significantly among types of multiple product users and exclusive users, interventions should be tailored to address the specific tobacco and cannabis use practices of young adults. • Approximately 1 in 5 never blunt smokers initiated during the transition from youth to young adulthood. • More than half (56.8%) of current blunt smokers continued using at each follow-up observation. • Risk for blunt initiation was greater among Hispanic (72%) and NH-Black (115%), relative to NH-White. • Alcohol use was common predictor of transitioning from never to current blunt use each race/ethnic category. To characterize and compare transitions in blunt smoking behaviors among a diverse cohort of youth and young adults observed between Spring 2019 and Fall 2021. We analyzed n = 14,152 observations (i.e., completed surveys) provided by n = 2,610 youth and young adults over six (6) waves from Spring 2019 to Fall 2021 via the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance (TATAMS) system. Participants were recruited in age-cohorts, reflecting 16.5 years (0.5), 18.5 years (0.6), and 20.1 years (0.8) of age at baseline. We applied a three-state Markov model to estimate blunt initiation (never → ever), onset (never → current), continuation (ever → current), and discontinuation (current → ever). First, we compared transitions in blunt smoking by race/ethnicity, with non-Hispanic (NH) Whites as the referent. Second, we stratified the Markov models by race/ethnicity to identify common and unique predictors of blunt transitions, including sex, age, alcohol use, depression, anxiety, and tobacco cigar smoking. At baseline, 73% of participants had never smoked blunts, 15.3% had ever smoked blunts s, and 11.7% currently smoked blunts. NHB (HR: 2.15; 95% CI: 1.21–3.84) and Hispanic (HR: 1.72; 95% CI: 1.08–2.72) participants had significantly greater risk of blunt smoking initiation, relative to NHWs. Similarly, NHBs had great risk for continuation (HR: 1.65; 95% CI: 1.16–2.34) and lower risk of discontinuation (HR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.42–0.77), relative to NHWs. Alcohol use predicted greater risk for onset among NHW (HR: 5.22; 95% CI: 1.40–19.45), NHB (HR: 3.14; 95% CI: 1.32–7.46), and Hispanic (HR: 2.99; 95% CI: 1.80–4.97) participants. Blunt smoking initiation was most common among NHB and Hispanic youth and young adults while risk for sustained blunt smoking was higher in NHB youth and young adults. • Menthol vs. tobacco e-liquid did not result in overall differences in puff patterns. • There were no significant differences in subjective experience by e-liquid flavor. • There may be limited benefit to smokers if menthol e-cigarettes remain on the market. The proposed FDA product standard to prohibit menthol as a characterizing flavor in combustible cigarettes has the potential to significantly reduce tobacco-related health disparities. Whether a menthol e-liquid product standard would improve or hinder public health is unknown. No known research has directly examined the impact of menthol vs. tobacco flavored e-liquid use on acute e-cigarette use patterns, subjective experience, behavioral intentions, and craving and withdrawal among menthol cigarette smokers. Black (n = 47) and White (n = 4) nicotine-deprived menthol smokers with limited e-cigarette experience completed two counterbalanced in-laboratory 30-minute ad libitum vaping sessions with menthol and tobacco nicotine salt-based e-liquid in a randomized crossover pilot trial design. Questionnaires assessed reductions in craving and withdrawal and post-session subjective experience and behavioral intentions. Puff topography was measured continuously throughout each vaping session. Measures of puff topography did not differ significantly by e-liquid flavor (all p >.40). Similarly, menthol and tobacco flavored e-cigarettes were both rated positively in terms of subjective effects and behavioral intentions (all p >.10) and about 40 % of participants reported a preference for the tobacco-flavored e-liquid. Finally, participants showed comparable reductions in craving (p =.210) and withdrawal (p =.671) from pre- and post-session regardless of e-liquid flavor. Among menthol smokers in a lab-based setting, findings suggest that menthol vs tobacco e-liquid flavor has little impact on acute changes in puff patterns, subjective experience, behavioral intentions, or craving and withdrawal. • Pain management is complicated by health-related behaviors such as smoking. • Current smokers had higher pain interference at intake. • Body symptom distribution was no different among never, prior, and current smokers. • Physical function scores were also no different between smoking groups. Study of the association between smoking and pain intensity has produced conflicting results; with less focus on pain interference. Different pain constructs could have varying associations with smoking behaviors. This study sought to investigate the association between smoking history and not only pain intensity, but also pain interference, symptom distribution and physical function. Smoking history (current, past, or none), pain interference (Pain, Enjoyment of Life, and General Activity scale), symptom distribution and physical function scores were extracted from medical records of patients seen in physical therapy for common sites of musculoskeletal pain (lumbar and cervical spine, knee, or hip). Generalized linear models assessed the relationship between smoking history and pain/function. 833 patients from an integrated healthcare system were included (mean: 57.6 years, SD=16.3; 43 % male). After controlling for several variables, current smokers had significantly higher baseline pain interference scores compared to never and former smokers (beta [B]: 0.65, 95 %CI: 0.13 to 1.18, P =.02). Smoking was not a significant predictor of symptom distribution at baseline [B: 0.17, 95 %CI −0.06 to 0.42, P =.16] or physical function scores at discharge [B: -0.03, 95 %CI: −0.08 to 0.02, P =.25]. Smokers experienced a greater impact of pain at baseline. However, symptom distribution at intake and function upon discharge were similar between all smoking groups. • We ran an experiment examining cigar and cannabis co-marketing on packages. • Participants were US youth (ages 15–20) who used or were susceptible to cigars. • Co-marketing led youth to think that products do not contain nicotine or tobacco. • Co-marketing led to higher susceptibility to using the product shown. Cigars are sometimes marketed with cannabis references because they are often used for smoking blunts (i.e., cannabis rolled in cigar paper with or without tobacco). However, little research exists on the impact of cannabis co-marketing on cigar perceptions. Participants included 506 US youth (ages 15–20) recruited April-June 2023 through Qualtrics who reported ever using little cigars or cigarillos (LCCs), past 30-day use of LCCs, or susceptibility to using LCCs. We then conducted a between-subjects experiment, randomizing youth to view one of two cigarillo packages: 1) a package with cannabis co-marketing (i.e., the package included a cannabis-related flavor descriptor and the word "blunt" appeared in the brand name and product label) or 2) a package with no cannabis co-marketing. We assessed the effects of the packaging on perceptions of product ingredients, addictiveness and harm perceptions, product appeal, susceptibility to using the product shown, and purchase intentions. Packages with cannabis co-marketing were perceived as more likely to contain cannabis (OR : 5.56, 95 % CI: 3.73, 8.27) and less likely to contain tobacco (OR : 0.42, 95 % CI: 0.25, 0.70) or nicotine (OR : 0.57, 95 % CI: 0.40, 0.82). Cannabis co-marketing also led to higher susceptibility to using the product shown (B : 0.21, p = 0.02). We did not find evidence that cannabis co-marketing changed harm perceptions or purchase intentions. Among a sample of US youth, cannabis co-marketing on cigar packages may change perceptions of product ingredients and increase susceptibility to using such products, which could lead to the initiation of cigars and cannabis. • Among people who smoke cigarettes, those with high substance use problem severity (SUP) are more likely to use e-cigarettes for cigarette cessation than those with no SUP. • Similarly, people who smoke cigarettes with high SUP severity are significantly more likely to use e-cigarettes for cigarette reduction compared to those with no SUP. • No significant differences observed between high and low SUP severity in the use of nicotine replacement therapy. The aim of this study was to compare past 12-month use of cigarette smoking cessation aids (e.g., Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved cessation products or e-cigarettes for smoking cessation) among people with substance use problems (PWSUPs) who currently smoke to people without substance use problems (SUPs) who currently smoke cigarettes in a nationally representative US sample. We used the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Wave 6 Study [n = 30,516]. Our sample comprised adult (18+) established cigarette smokers (100+ lifetime-sticks with daily/non-daily use) [n = 5,895]. The independent variable was SUP status (no, moderate, and high). The dependent variables were past-year use of: nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs), cessation medications [i.e., varenicline or bupropion], or e-cigarettes [for cigarette cessation and reduction]. Weighted multivariable logistic regression models for each dependent variable examined the associations between SUP status and each cessation aid, adjusting for cigarette dependence, daily cigarette smoking, and demographic factors. Among people who smoke, a higher proportion of respondents with high SUP severity used NRTs, cessation medications, and e-cigarettes for cigarette cessation, respectively (12.3%, 8.4%, 15.7%), compared to those with no/low SUP severity (9.8%, 6.0%, 8.9%). In the multivariable models, respondents with high SUPs had 63% (95% CI:1.16–2.29) higher odds of using e-cigarettes for cessation than those without SUPs. No significant differences were seen between high (vs. no/low SUPs) in the past-year use of NRTs and cessation medications. • Several studies have shown that e-cigarettes can aid in cigarette cessation for individuals trying to quit cigarette smoking. Additionally, changing policies are impacting the range of e-cigarette flavors and devices accessible to the public and those interested in using them for cigarette cessation. • We found that a majority of people using e-cigarettes for cigarette cessation in the US used fruit flavors, disposable devices, and 1–6 mg nicotine concentration levels. • Our findings also indicate that daily e-cigarette use is significantly associated with higher odds of past month cigarette abstinence at follow up two years later among individuals using e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, despite evolving regulatory policies impacting e-cigarette flavors and devices. A subpopulation of adults who smoke cigarettes use electronic nicotine device systems (ENDS) for cigarette cessation. This study examined the relationship between ENDS flavors, device types, and nicotine concentration with past month cigarette abstinence among adults using ENDS for cigarette cessation. We used the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study (waves 5 and 6) to identify adults who self-reported using ENDS to quit cigarettes at baseline (wave 5) and investigated their cigarette abstinence at follow-up (wave 6) [n = 1252]. Measures assessed include ENDS features (flavors, device types, nicotine concentration) at baseline and past-month abstinence from cigarette smoking at follow-up. Weighted descriptive analysis was used, and multivariable logistic regression models examined ENDS features associated with past-month cigarette abstinence, adjusting for demographic factors and tobacco dependence at baseline. Most participants used disposable devices (37.2 %; 95 % CI:33.2–41.5), followed by refillable tanks (30.2 %; 95 % CI:26.2–34.5). Additionally, fruit (41.3 %; 95 % CI:37.3–45.5), followed by menthol (19.1 %; 95 % CI:16.2–22.4), and tobacco (18.5 %; 95 % CI:15.5–22.1) were the most common flavors. The most common nicotine concentration used was 1–6 mg/ml (38.8 %; 95 % CI:34.6–43.2). Furthermore, in the adjusted model, daily ENDS users at baseline had 86 % (95 % CI:1.08–3.18) higher odds of past month cigarette abstinence at follow-up, than individuals who indicated 'not at all' to the current use of ENDS at baseline. There were no significant differences by preferred flavors, device type and nicotine concentrations (p-values > 0.05). Daily ENDS users had higher odds of quitting cigarettes compared to those who stopped using ENDS. • The extent to which heavy smoking and retirement risk are causally related remains to be determined. • This study examines the relationship between heavy smoking and retirement risk. • To obtain reliable estimates, we employ a time-to-event Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis. • The analysis reveals that heavy smoking significantly increases the risk of retirement. To overcome the endogeneity of heavy smoking behaviour, we employed a novel approach by exploiting the genetic predisposition to heavy smoking, as measured with a polygenic risk score (PGS), in a Mendelian Randomisation approach. 8164 participants (mean age 68.86 years) from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing had complete data on smoking behaviour, employment and a heavy smoking PGS. Heavy smoking was indexed as smoking at least 20 cigarettes a day. A time-to-event Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis, using a complementary log–log (cloglog) link function, was employed to model the retirement risk. Our results show that being a heavy smoker significantly increases the risk of retirement (β = 1.324, standard error = 0.622, p < 0.05). Results were robust to a battery of checks and a placebo analysis considering the never-smokers. Overall, our findings support a causal pathway from heavy smoking to earlier retirement. • Evidence about e-cigarettes for smoking cessation is mostly limited to high-income countries and people who frequently smoke. • Mexicans who smoke and use e-cigarettes concurrently are more likely to try to quit but did not remain abstinent. • E-cigarette characteristics and frequency of use did not moderate the association between e-cigarette use and smoking cessation. This study assessed quit attempts among adults who use cigarettes either exclusively or with e-cigarettes in Mexico, where non-daily smoking predominates. An open cohort of Mexican adults who smoke was surveyed every four months from November 2018 to March 2021. Participants followed to the next survey were analyzed (n = 2220 individuals, 4560 observations). Multinomial logistic models regressed smoking quit attempts reported at the followup survey (ref = no attempt; tried to quit; sustained attempt of ≥30 days) on e-cigarette use frequency (none = ref; 1–2 days/week; ≥3 days/week), adjusting for sociodemographics and smoking-related variables. Additional models subdivided e-cigarette users by intentions to quit smoking in the next six months (i.e., yes/no), use of nicotine (i.e., yes/no), and vaping device used (i.e., open/closed). At 4-month follow-up, 32.7 % had tried to quit, and 2.9 % had quit for 30 days or more. Compared to those who smoke exclusively, occasional, and frequent e-cigarette users were more likely to try to quit (Adjusted Relative Risk Ratio or ARRR = 1.26 and 1.66, respectively) but no more likely to sustain their quit attempt. Among those who intended to quit smoking, e-cigarette users were no more likely to either try or sustain quit attempts. Furthermore, use of e-cigarettes with nicotine (59.6 %) was unassociated with cessation except that those who frequently used e-cigarettes with nicotine were more likely to try to quit than those who smoke exclusively (ARRR = 1.88). Device type used was not differentially associated with outcomes. • Maternal prenatal tobacco smoking was associated with offspring reduced academic achievement. • Maternal prenatal smoking may increase offspring's academic risk by 49%. • Mechanistic studies needed to inform targeted developmental programs for academic improvement. Previous epidemiological studies examining the prospective association between maternal prenatal tobacco smoking and offspring academic achievement have reported conflicting results. Relevant epidemiological studies on the topic were extracted from four main databases (PubMed/Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, and Scopus). The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to appraise the methodological quality of the included studies. We conducted a narrative assessment of the studies that did not report effect estimates. Inverse variance-weighted random effect meta-analysis was used to combine studies reporting effect sizes to estimate pooled adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). The review was prospectively registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022350901). Nineteen observational studies, published between 1973 and 2021 with a total of 1.25 million study participants were included in the final review. Of these, fifteen studies (79 %) reported reduced academic achievement in offspring exposed to maternal prenatal tobacco smoking. The eight primary studies (sample size = 723,877) included in the meta-analysis together suggested a 49 % higher risk of reduced academic achievement in offspring exposed to maternal prenatal tobacco smoking when compared to non-exposed offspring (Pooled odds ratio = 1.49, 95 % CI:1.17–1.91). Our review found a positive association between maternal prenatal tobacco smoking and offspring reduced academic achievement. However, variation in the adjustment of potential confounders and significant heterogeneity across included studies limited more conclusive inference. Mechanistic studies to identify causal pathways and specific academic impacts are needed to inform targeted developmental programs to assist child learning and academic performance. Measures designed to assess electronic cigarette (ECIG) dependence are largely adapted from those developed for cigarette smoking, and have been evaluated mainly among dual ECIG-cigarette users. The present study evaluated the psychometric properties of four dependence measures among former-smoking ECIG users. Respondents (N = 187) were daily ECIG users who had formerly smoked cigarettes regularly. As part of an online survey, they completed four dependence measures: Penn State Electronic Cigarette Dependence Index (PSECDI); E-Cigarette Dependence Scale (EDS-4); Glover Nilsson Behavioral Questionnaire (GNBQ); and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5th Edition (DSM-5). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a single factor structure for all four measures, and fit indices were adequate for all models. Most inter-item correlations (mean r 's = 0.21 to 0.45) and all item-total correlations (mean r 's = 0.53 to 0.80) were significant for all four measures. Internal consistency was highest for the GNBQ (α = 0.86) followed by the EDS-4 (α = 0.81), PSECDI (α = 0.76), and DSM-5 (α = 0.75). Age of ECIG initiation was correlated negatively with scores on the EDS-4 and DSM-5, while number of ECIG quit attempts was correlated positively with scores on all measures except the GNBQ. Convergent validity was highest for comparisons between the EDS-4 and PSECDI (r = 0.75) though all comparisons were significant (p 's < 0.001). • Dual/poly nicotine and tobacco use among US adolescents declined from 2011 to 2021, but slightly increased in 2022. • Smoking products paired with novel products was the most common combination of products used. • Being white and male was associated with higher risk of dual/poly use of nicotine or tobacco products. Adolescent nicotine and tobacco product use remains common despite declining smoking rates in the United States, likely due to the emergence of novel products. Concurrent use of multiple products may increase the risk of nicotine dependency and subsequent substance use. To identify patterns and trends of dual and poly nicotine and tobacco use among adolescents in the US and explore associations of dual and poly nicotine and tobacco use with sociodemographic factors. 12 years of annual National Youth Tobacco Survey data (2011–2022) from 242,637 respondents were used to examine prevalence trends of different combinations of nicotine or tobacco product use among adolescents in the US using weighted point estimates for each year. Poisson regression models examined sociodemographic factors associated with different patterns of dual and poly-product use from 2011 to 2022. Overall, the prevalence of dual (i.e. at least two products) and poly (i.e. at least three products) use decreased between 2011 and 2021 (from 9.5 % to 2.8 % and from 5.1 % to 1.1 %, respectively), but showed signs of increase between 2021 and 2022 (3.7 % for dual and 1.7 % for poly use). The most common combinations included a combustible product with either a novel or noncombustible product. The risk for dual and poly-product use was higher among non-Hispanic Whites, males, and high school students. Previously declining trends in the prevalence of tobacco/nicotine dual and poly use may have been reversed. • Emotion dysregulation was related to clinically significant smoking processes. • Emotion dysregulation is a key transdiagnostic relevant to smoking. • Emotion dysregulation may impact Hispanics' smoking maintenance and relapse. Hispanic/Latinx (hereafter Hispanic) individuals in the United States (US) experience serious tobacco-related disparities and factors contributing to such disparities need to be adequately identified and clinically addressed. Emotion dysregulation is a key transdiagnostic relevant to smoking. The present cross-sectional investigation sought to test if emotion dysregulation was related to more severe problems during smoking quit attempts (e.g., irritability, weight gain), perceptions of difficulty about quitting, as well as negative and positive beliefs about smoking abstinence in a sample of English-speaking Hispanic adults residing in the US who smoke. Participants included 332 Hispanic adults who engaged in daily cigarette smoking (35.46 years old, 37 % identified as female). Emotion dysregulation was significantly related to more severe problems when quitting and perceived barriers for quitting, as well as negative beliefs about smoking abstinence. Additionally, emotion dysregulation was significantly and negatively related to positive outcomes about smoking abstinence. The amount of change in the various smoking criterion variables accounted for by emotion dysregulation was small (sr2 range: 0.028-0.085), but evident in adjusted models that accounted for a wide range of factors (e.g., depression, drug use severity). Overall, this investigation found consistent empirical evidence that individual differences in emotion dysregulation in Hispanic individuals were associated with several clinically significant smoking processes, suggesting this construct may represent an important factor involved in the maintenance and relapse of smoking among this ethnic population. • 14.4% of adults reported exposure to four or more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). • Prevalence rates for ever smoking, current smoking, and former smoking were 43.4%, 18.2%, and 29.0%, respectively. • Four or more ACEs exposure increased the odds of current tobacco use, initiation, former use, nicotine dependence, and the use of electronic cigarettes. • People with four or more ACEs exposure were twice as likely to have ever used tobacco and nearly four times as likely to be current tobacco users than those without ACEs. Tobacco use remains one of the most used substances among adults globally and substantially impacts individuals and society. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contribute to tobacco use. However, the association between cumulative ACEs and tobacco use behaviors (TUB) has not been established in the literature. In this review, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of ACEs among adult tobacco users and evaluated the relationship between cumulative ACEs and TUB. We identified original articles published before October 2022 by searching PubMed, CINAHL, and Psych INFO databases. Inclusion criteria were: English language, adults and used instruments assessing for cumulative ACEs defined as four or more ACEs. Forty-two studies, totaling 674,087 participants; predominantly cohort and cross-sectional in study design (n = 33). Exposure to 4 ≥ ACEs was significantly associated with increasing the odds of current tobacco use (n = 35), ever or former tobacco use (n = 13), tobacco use initiation, (n = 3) nicotine dependence (n = 1), and ever using electronic cigarettes (n = 1). In the meta -analysis, as compared to those without ACEs, those with 4 ≥ ACEs were twice as likely to have ever used tobacco (OR = 2.16, 95 %CI:1.73–2.70) and approximately four times more likely to have used tobacco currently (OR = 3.73, 95 %CI:2.69–5.18). The cumulative ACEs exposure can increase the risk for TUB. However, the evidence is limited primarily to cigarette use. Ongoing research into the effects of cumulative ACEs on TUB is needed to integrate trauma-informed intervention in treating tobacco use and guide public health initiatives aimed to reduce the prevalence of ACEs and TUB among adults. Little is known about the mechanisms by which medication adherence promotes smoking cessation among adults with MDD. We tested the hypothesis that early adherence promotes abstinence by increasing behavioral treatment (BT) utilization. Data for this post-hoc analysis were from a randomized trial of 149 adults with current or past MDD treated with BT and either varenicline (n = 81) or placebo (n = 68). Arms were matched on medication regimen. Early medication adherence was measured by the number of days in which medication was taken at the prescribed dose during the first six of 12 weeks of pharmacological treatment (weeks 2–7). BT consisted of eight 45-minute sessions (weeks 1–12). Bioverified abstinence was assessed at end-of-treatment (week 14). A regression-based approach was used to test whether the effect of early medication adherence on abstinence was mediated by BT utilization. Among 141 participants who initiated the medication regimen, BT utilization mediated the effect of early medication adherence on abstinencea) an interquartile increase in early medication days from 20 to 42 predicted a 4.2 times increase in abstinence (Total Risk Ratio (RR) = 4.24, 95% CI = 2.32–13.37; p <.001); b) increases in BT sessions predicted by such an increase in early medication days were associated with a 2.7 times increase in abstinence (Indirect RR = 2.73, 95% CI = 1.54–7.58; p <.001); and c) early medication adherence effects on abstinence were attenuated, controlling for BT (Direct RR = 1.55, 95% CI = 0.83–4.23, p =.17). • Smoking levels did not predict overall quality of life among participants with SMI. • Smoking reduction was associated with improved health-related quality of life. • Participants who smoked more had worse negative symptoms. • Smoking reduction did not predict other psychiatric symptoms. Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) smoke cigarettes at a much higher rate than the general population, increasing their risk for medical illnesses and mortality. However, individuals with SMI do not get enough support to quit smoking, partially because of concerns from medical providers that reducing smoking may worsen their symptoms or quality of life. Veterans with SMI and nicotine dependence (n = 178) completed a 12-week smoking cessation trial (parent trial dates: 2010–2014) including assessments of smoking status, psychiatric symptoms (Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale), and quality of life (Lehman Quality of Life Interview–Short Version) at up to four time points: baseline, post-treatment, three-month follow-up, and 9-month follow-up. Bayesian multilevel modeling estimated the impact of changes in the self-reported number of cigarettes per day in the past seven days on psychiatric symptoms and quality of life. Between subjects, each additional pack of cigarettes smoked per day was associated with a 0.83 point higher score (95%CI: 0.03 to 1.7) on a negative symptoms scale ranging from 0 to 35. Within subjects, each one-pack reduction in the number of cigarettes smoked per day was associated with an improvement of 0.32 (95%CI = 0.12 to 0.54) on the health-related quality of life scale, which ranges from 0 to 7 points. There were no other significant between- or within-subjects effects of smoking on psychiatric symptoms or quality of life. • HTP and NVP users reported comparable product dependence and nicotine intake. • HTPs and NVPs were similarly effective in controlling cigarette cravings and withdrawal symptoms. • HTP and NVP users perceived their respective products as similarly safe, satisfying and helpful for smoking cessation. • HTP use appears to maintain a stronger smoker identity than NVP use. • HTP use was associated with stronger perceived addiction than NVP use. There is limited long-term and independent research on heated tobacco products (HTPs). We compared people who used HTPs with those who used nicotine vaping products (NVP) or cigarettes on smoker identity, indicators of effectiveness and, among NVP/HTP users, perceptions of these products. Adults exclusive cigarette smokers (N = 45) and ex-smokers with medium/long-term (>3months) NVP (N = 46) or HTP use (N = 45) were recruited in London, UK. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing socio-demographics, smoking characteristics, smoker identity, dependence, intention to stop and attitudes towards HTP/NVP. In adjusted analysis, people who used cigarettes (Mean Difference (MD) = 1.4, 95%Confidence Intervals (CI) 0.7,2.0) and HTPs (MD = 0.8, 95%CI 0.1, 1.5) reported stronger smoker identities than those who used NVPs. Compared with smokers, HTP/NVP users had lower cravings for cigarettes (MD = 3.0, 95%CI 1.6, 4.3; MD = 3.1, 95%CI 1.9, 4.3, respectively), and higher intention to stop product use (MD = −0.8, 95%CI −1.7,-0.01; MD = −1.2, 95%CI −2.0, -0.3, respectively). People using HTPs or NVPs reported similar perceived product satisfaction (HTP:M = 3.4, 95%CI 2.8, 3.9; NVP:M = 3.0, 95%CI 2.5, 3.5), efficacy for smoking cessation (HTP:M = 4.5, 95%CI 4.2, 4.9; NVP:M = 4.6, 95%CI 4.3, 4.9) and safety (HTP:M = 2.1, 95%CI 2.0, 2.2; NVP:M = 2.0, 95%CI 1.8, 2.1). HTP users reported greater perceived addictiveness than NVPs (MD = 0.3, 95%CI 0.2, 0.6). HTP and NVP users perceived products to be similarly acceptable and effective suggesting that HTPs, like NVPs, may support smoking cessation. However, since HTP use appears to maintain a stronger smoker identity and perceived addiction, this may suggest a more limited role of HTP for a permanent transition away from cigarettes. IntroductionThe prevalence of smoking across racial/ethnic groups has declined over the years, yet racial health disparities for smoking persist. Studies indicate that non-Hispanic Black smokers attempt to quit smoking more often compared to non-Hispanic White smokers but are less successful at doing so. Research suggests that motives to quit smoking differ by race, however, less is known about the role of motives to smoke in explaining racial differences in attempts to quit smoking.MethodsThis study examined whether smoking motives accounted for the differential rates in quit attempts between non-Hispanic Black (n=155) and non-Hispanic White (n=159) smokers. Data were culled from a larger study of heavy-drinking smokers. The Wisconsin Index of Smoking Dependence Motives (WISDM) assessed motives to smoke.ResultsAs expected, Black and White smokers reported similar smoking patterns, yet Black smokers reported higher rates of failed attempts to quit smoking than White smokers. Findings indicated that Black, compared to White, smokers endorsed lower scores in the negative reinforcement, positive reinforcement, and taste WISDM subscales and scores in these subscales mediated the relationship between race and quit attempts.ConclusionsIn this study, Blacks, compared to Whites, endorsed lower motives to smoke, which are generally associated with successful quit attempts, yet they experienced more failed attempts to quit smoking. This study demonstrates racial health disparities at the level of smoking motives and suggests that Black smokers remain vulnerable to failed quit attempts despite reporting lower motives to smoke.

Co-use of alcohol and cigarettes is highly prevalent, and heavy drinking smokers represent a large and difficult-to-treat subgroup of smokers. Negative affect, including anxiety and depressive symptomatology, has been associated with both cigarette and alcohol use independently, but less is known about the role of negative affect in heavy drinking smokers. Furthermore, while some studies have shown negative affect to precede substance use, a precise biobehavioral mechanism has not been established. The aims of the present study were twofold. First, to test whether negative affect is associated with alcohol and cigarette use in a large community sample of heavy drinking smokers (n=461). And second, to examine craving as a plausible statistical mediator of the association between negative affect and alcohol and/or cigarette use. Hypothesis testing was conducted using a structural equation modeling approach with cross-sectional data. Analysis revealed a significant main effect of negative affect on alcohol use (β=0.210, p0.10) in this sample. PurposeTo improve smoking prevention efforts, better methods for identifying at-risk youth are needed. The widely used measure of susceptibility to smoking identifies at-risk adolescents; however, it correctly identifies only about one third of future smokers. Adding curiosity about smoking to this susceptibility index may allow us to identify a greater proportion of future smokers while they are still pre-teens.MethodsWe use longitudinal data from a recent national study on parenting to prevent problem behaviors. Only oldest children between 10 and 13years of age were eligible. Participants were identified by RDD survey and followed for 6years. All baseline never smokers with at least one follow-up assessment were included (n=878). The association of curiosity about smoking with future smoking behavior was assessed. Then, curiosity was added to form an enhanced susceptibility index and sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value were calculated.ResultsAmong committed never smokers at baseline, those who were 'definitely not curious' were less likely to progress toward smoking than both those who were 'probably not curious' (ORadj=1.89; 95% CI=1.03-3.47) or 'probably/definitely curious' (ORadj=2.88; 95% CI=1.11-7.45). Incorporating curiosity into the susceptibility index increased the proportion identified as at-risk to smoke from 25.1% to 46.9%. The sensitivity (true positives) for this enhanced susceptibility index for both experimentation and established smoking increased from 37-40% to over 50%, although the positive predictive value did not improve.ConclusionThe addition of curiosity significantly improves the identification and classification of which adolescents will experiment with smoking or become established smokers.

• Prevalence of smoking and at-risk drinking was 4.6% from April 2020 to March 2022. • This group has high rates of psychological distress and mental health conditions. • Targeted support is needed to help them cut down on their drinking and smoking. Smoking and drinking alcohol both significantly contribute to mortality and morbidity, and there is a need to characterise the sociodemographic and health-related characteristics (e.g. mental distress) of people who do both in order to target resources. This study reports the prevalence and characteristics of adults in the general population in England who both drink alcohol at increasing-and-higher-risk levels and smoke. We used cross-sectional data from a monthly, nationally representative survey of adults in England (n = 37,258; April 2020-March 2022). Weighted data were used to report prevalence and unweighted data were used to report descriptive statistics for sociodemographic and health-related characteristics. The prevalence of both smoking and increasing-and-higher-risk drinking was 4.6% (95% CI = 4.4–4.9; n = 1,574). They smoked a mean of 10.4 (SD = 8.86) cigarettes per day and had a mean AUDIT score of 12.8 (SD = 5.18). Nearly half (48.2%, n = 751) were trying to cut down on their smoking and 28.0% (n = 441) on their drinking. A quarter (25.3%, n = 397) had received General Practitioner advice on smoking while 8.7% (n = 76) had received advice on their drinking. Nearly half (48.6%, n = 745) reported experiencing psychological distress in the past month and 44.6% (n = 529) had a diagnosed mental health condition, both of which were higher than among all adults (28.1% and 29.1%, respectively). In England, from April 2020 to March 2022, the prevalence of both smoking and increasing-and-higher-risk drinking was 4.6%. • Our results suggest that Australian 14–17-year-old teenagers regard vaping as being safer and less harmful than parents do. • The risk of smoking and vaping uptake among teenagers significantly increased if they had an ever-smoker or ever-vaper parent. • Parents of never-vaper teenagers were considerably better at correctly predicting the vaping-status of their child than the parents of ever-vaper children. • Tobacco control and vaping policies and interventions should take a whole of population approach, including population-based policy measures addressing e-cigarette marketing and accessibility. Vaping by young people in Australia is a rapidly emerging public health issue. Evidence shows that parental behaviours and attitudes can play a key role in influencing adolescent behaviours. Considering the health harms of vaping and evidence that it can be a gateway to tobacco smoking for never-smokers, it is important to understand whether parents' smoking and vaping behaviours influence their teenage children's smoking and vaping behaviours. Online cross-sectional surveys as part of the Generation Vape study, conducted in Australia in 2021/2022, were used to assess parents' influence on, and awareness of, one of their 14–17-year-old child's vaping and smoking behaviours. Participants were 3242 parents and 3242 14–17-year-old teenage children. The risk of vaping and smoking uptake among 14–17-year-old teenagers was 42% (p = 0.003) and 97% (p < 0.001) higher, respectively, if their parent was an ever-vaper. The risk of vaping and smoking uptake among teenagers was 81% (p < 0.001) and 159% (p < 0.001) higher, respectively, if their parent was an ever-smoker. Parents of teenagers who have not vaped were considerably better at correctly predicting this (97% correct) than parents of teenagers who have vaped (70% correct). Compared to parents, teenagers tended to have less agreement with statements suggesting vaping is unsafe or harmful, and more agreement with statements suggesting vaping is relatively safe. Parental smoking and vaping behaviours are associated with those of their children. • The Metacognitions about Smoking Questionnaire (MSQ) demonstrated good psychometric soundness when measuring metacognitive factors associated with e-cigarette use. • Three distinct factors were identified in relation to e-cigarette use outcome expectancies: 'positive metacognitions about cognitive regulation' (PMCR), 'positive metacognitions about emotional regulation' (PMER), and 'negative metacognitions' (NM). • Participants with higher outcome expectancies for cognitive and emotional regulation, as well as negative outcomes, tended to use e-cigarettes more frequently, indicating a significant association between these metacognitive factors and e-cigarette use behavior. Metacognition can be understood as 'cognition of cognition' or 'thinking about thinking'. Metacognition research has primarily focused on cigarette smoking, while e-cigarette use has been relatively unexplored. The study sought to examine the properties of the Metacognitions about Smoking Questionnaire (MSQ), as it was adapted for use among adolescent and young adult e-cigarette users. Further, the study sought to examine the ability of the Metacognitions about Smoking Questionnaire (MSQ) to predict past 30-day e-cigarette use among adolescent and young adult e-cigarette users. The study analyzed data collected by the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance System (TATAMS) in Spring 2020. The instrument consisted of 20 items found to have sound psychometric properties when validated among self-defined cigarette smokers in the UK. The instrument was adapted for e-cigarette use by providing a brief description before the items. Participants were asked "Which of the following products you use most often?", and those who selected "e-cigarettes" were included in the study. Participants were then presented with 20 statements about beliefs people hold about using e-cigarette and were instructed to determine their agreement with the statements on a four-point Likert scale with respect to e-cigarette use. Factors were extracted using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and factor structure was verified using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Further, each of the extracted factors were used to predict past 30-day e-cigarette use frequency in the most frequent group, using conditional effects, holding the most frequent category of categorical covariates, mean of continuous covariates and the other two metacognitive factors as reference levels. Past 30-day e-cigarette use was measured as the number of days of use in the past 30-days. Participants who reported e-cigarette use in the past 30-days were included in this analysis (n = 244). Participants were in 10th grade (n = 46), 12th grade (n = 92) and two years beyond high school (n = 106). EFA was conducted and items were assessed with varimax rotation. CFA was conducted with multiple models (one factor, two factor and three factor solutions) and the 3-factor solution showed the best fit. Factors were named as 'positive metacognitions about cognitive regulation'(PMCR) (e.g. '...helps me think more clearly'), 'positive metacognitions about emotional regulation'(PMER) (e.g. '...helps me to relax when I am agitated'), and 'negative metacognitions'(NM) (e.g. 'It is hard to control my desire for e-cigarettes'). Cronbach's alpha showed high internal consistency (0.92, 0.90 and 0.91, respectively). The median score (range) was 7 (5–20), 10 (5–20), and 11 (10–40) on PMCR, PMER, and NM factors. Higher scores denote higher levels of outcome expectancies of that factor. Lowest and highest score on PMCR was associated with 15 and 20.4 days of e-cigarette use in the past 30-days, respectively. Similarly, lowest and highest score on PMER and NM were associated with 13.2 and 21 days, and 14.7 and 24.6 days, respectively. The results indicate that participants who reported highest outcome expectancies for cognitive regulation, emotional regulation, and negative outcomes, used e-cigarettes on average 5, 8 and 10 days more than those who reported lowest outcome expectancies for these factors. The MSQ showed good psychometric soundness for measuring metacognitive factors associated with e-cigarette use. For cigarette smoking, the original questionnaire distinguished negative cognitions of 'uncontrollability' and 'cognitive interference', which was not seen in e-cigarette users. This indicates a difference in cognitions of cigarette and e-cigarette users. No studies of young adults have compared symptoms of nicotine dependence among exclusive past 30-day (P30D) ENDS users versus exclusive P30D cigarette smokers. Participants at Wave 14 (Fall 2021) of The Texas Adolescent and Tobacco Marketing Surveillance System (TATAMS) (n = 2,341; mean age = 20.95 years old) who reported P30D exclusive ENDS use (n = 212) and P30D exclusive cigarette smoking (n = 46). Symptoms of nicotine dependence were measured with the Hooked On Nicotine Checklist (the 10-item HONC scale). An independent samples t -test compared average HONC scores between groups, and a Pearson (or Fisher's Exact) Chi-Square (X2) test compared the prevalence of symptom(s) between groups. The average HONC score was significantly higher for exclusive P30D ENDS users than exclusive P30D cigarette smokers (3.51 vs. 1.91, p ≤ 0.001). Compared to exclusive P30D cigarette smokers, a significantly higher proportion of exclusive P30D ENDS users reported having felt addicted (45.28% vs. 15.22%, p ≤ 0.001), having strong cravings (50.00% vs. 28.26%, p = 0.007), difficulty not using in prohibited places (i.e., school or work) (24.06% vs. 4.35%, p = 0.002), difficulty concentrating (21.23% vs. 6.52%, p = 0.021), and feeling nervous, restless, or anxious (28.77% vs. 10.87%, p = 0.012). Understanding proximal associations between other substance use (e.g., alcohol and cannabis) and smoking may have important treatment implications. This exploratory analysis investigated the role of alcohol and/or cannabis use in contributing to smoking events on the same day or next day among young adults engaged in a smoking cessation and relapse monitoring study. We used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data from 43 young adults (ages 18–25; 932 observations) who smoked cigarettes daily and agreed to participate in a 5-week study that included a 2-day smoking quit attempt and provision of tobacco treatment in the form of nicotine replacement therapy, brief cessation counseling, and financial incentives for abstinence (incentives were provided only during the 2-day quit attempt). We tested multilevel time-series models of daily associations between alcohol use, cannabis use, and smoking. Consistent with hypotheses, days on which participants were more likely to drink alcohol predicted increased likelihood of smoking the next day (OR = 2.27, p =.003). This effect was significant after controlling for both the one-day lagged effect of smoking (i.e., autoregression) and the concurrent (i.e., same day) effects of drinking and cannabis use. Although there was a positive concurrent effect of cannabis use on smoking (OR = 12.86, p =.003), the one-day lagged effect of cannabis use and the concurrent effect of drinking was not significant, contrary to hypotheses. Results indicate that alcohol use presents a potential threat to successful smoking cessation that extends to the following day. This suggests a risk-window in which treatment could be supplemented with just-in-time interventions and extending the focus on co-use to include this lagged impact on cessation outcomes. Sixty-eight percent of smokers want to quit, but only one in 10 are successful at smoking cessation. Recently, impulsivity has been studied in relation to smoking cessation with measures like the delay discounting task (DDT). We aimed to build on the robust literature that has already revealed the association between impulsivity and smoking cessation, as well as look at the differences between sexes for which there is conflicting evidence. We hypothesized that lower impulsivity would be positively associated with cessation success. In the parent cessation trial, participants were randomized to 12 weeks of progesterone or placebo. Participants were asked to quit smoking, and their smoking status was monitored via expired carbon monoxide throughout the study. Participants completed a DDT at screening, week 4, and week 8 using the 27-item Monetary Choice Questionnaire, where participants decided between a small immediate reward or a larger delayed reward (LDR). The effective delay 50 (ED50), which is the delay at which the LDR loses half its value, was analyzed. To estimate the association between ED50 and cessation, a logistic mixed model with a participant random intercept was fit, controlling for study week, randomization, sex, and age. For the 181 participants, a doubling of the ED50 was associated with an 18% increase in the odds of tobacco cessation (95% confidence interval: 0.2–38% increase; p=0.05). In agreement with our hypothesis, lower impulsivity correlated to greater tobacco cessation success. E-cigarettes have been available for over 15 years, but relatively little is known about long-term users. Our aim was to describe change over time in behaviours, attitudes and dependence in long-term users. A longitudinal study of 375 e-cigarette users enrolled on the Internet in 2012–2016 and surveyed again in 2021 (8 years later on average), who continuously used e-cigarettes in the interval. Fewer people in 2021 (11 %) than at baseline (33 %) had smoked tobacco in the past 31 days. Participants switched from second-generation models at baseline (e.g. Ego) to box mods in 2021 (e.g. iStick), they used larger refill bottles, they used home-made e-liquids twice as often, they used tobacco flavours less often and the nicotine concentration in e–liquids decreased from 12 to 6 mg/mL. There was no change over time in the time to the first e-cigarette puff of the day, but an e-cigarette dependence score of 0–100 decreased from 75 to 60, the frequency and strength of urges to vape decreased (from 31 % to 18 % of "strong" urges) and the proportion of people who said they would be likely to succeed if they tried to stop vaping increased. Compared to baseline, fewer people in 2021 reported vaping to cope with cravings or other smoking cessation symptoms, and fewer people reported vaping to quit smoking, to avoid relapse into smoking, or to reduce their tobacco consumption (p < 0.001 for all differences). In long-term, continuous users, over a period of 8 years, substantial changes were observed in the models of e-cigarettes used, in the flavours and strength of e-liquids, and in the reasons for vaping. Their level of nicotine dependence tended to decrease over time. • We have made nationally representative estimates of smoking and vaping in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, vaping and cigarette use remained stable. • Interesting patterns emerged when results were stratified by age group and gender which have not yet been identified in existing studies and which can inform public health interventions going forward. • During the COVID-19 pandemic, the 30-day period prevalence of vaping in those aged 20–24 years increased modestly from 2020 to 2021. • Fortunately, a substantial decrease in the 30-day period prevalence of smoking was observed in females from 2019 to 2020, which persisted in 2021. E-cigarette and cigarette use may have changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, there is no consensus in existing literature, and current Canadian studies have not used representative samples. Thus, there is a need for robust national estimates. The primary objective was to describe the 30-day period prevalence of smoking and vaping before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. This study analyzed three years of the cross-sectional Canadian Tobacco and Nicotine Survey: 2019 (pre-pandemic), 2020 (9 months into the pandemic) and 2021 (21 months into pandemic). Thirty-day period prevalence of vaping over the 2019, 2020, and 2021 study periods were 4.8 (95%CI: 4.2–5.3), 4.6% (95%CI: 4.1–5.2), and 5.2% (95%CI: 4.7–5.7), respectively. The 30-day period prevalence of smoking over the 2019, 2020, and 2021 study periods were 11.9% (95%CI: 10.9–12.7), 10.3% (95%CI: 9.4–11.2), and 10.3% (95%CI: 9.4–11.1), respectively. Notably, estimates of smoking for females decreased considerably from 2019 (11.0%; 95%CI: 9.9––12.2%) to 2020 (8.6%; 95%CI: 7.5–9.7). Estimates of vaping in those aged 20–24 increased substantially from 2020 (13.0%; 95%CI: 10.9–15.1) to 2021 (17.2%; 95%CI: 15.4–18.9). Changes to smoking and vaping were restricted to subsets within the population. In those aged 20–24, there was a modest increase in vaping from 2020 to 2021. • This study examines the impact of self-reported blunt use within a cigarette cessation trial. • The impact of cannabis use, specifically combustible cannabis, on cigarette cessation has not been well studied. • Additional research is needed to evaluate blunt use among tobacco users trying to stop smoking, with attention to change in blunt use and the health consequences of continued or increased blunt use. • Treatment addressing co-use is needed. People who smoke cigarettes are more likely than people who do not to use cannabis, including blunts, a tobacco product containing nicotine and marijuana. Blunts represent a challenge for cessation trials because nicotine could make stopping cigarettes more difficult. Few studies have examined the impact of blunt use on individuals actively engaged in a cigarette quit attempt. Blunt use was assessed at baseline, Weeks 4, 8, 12, 16, and 26 among Black adult people who smoke enrolled in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial of varenicline (VAR, n = 300) versus placebo (PBO, n = 200) for smoking cessation. Participants were categorized as ever blunt (blunt use reported at any timepoint) versus non-blunt (no blunt use reported). The primary outcome was salivary cotinine-verified 7-day point prevalence smoking abstinence at Weeks 12 and 26. Logistic regression examined the effects of treatment and blunt use on abstinence. 75 participants (mean age 45.6 years (SD = 12.5, range: 22,80); 32 (42%) female) reported blunt use. Logistic regression analyses showed no treatment by blunt use interaction or significant main effect of blunt use on smoking abstinence at Weeks 12 or 26 (p > 0.05). After adjusting for treatment, those who used blunts had statistically similar odds of quitting at Week 12 (OR: 0.68, 95% CI: 0.31, 1.5) and Week 26 (OR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.38, 1.87) as those who never used blunts during the study. Blunt use had no statistically significant impact on cessation among participants in a smoking cessation clinical trial. • Perceived discrimination is related to cigarette dependence among Latinx persons who smoke. • Smoking abstinence expectancies are tied to perceived discrimination and cigarette dependence. • Harmful consequences of smoking abstinence expectancies is a point of clinical intervention. The experience of perceived ethnic discrimination is prevalent and has harmful effects across various behavioral health processes among Latinx persons. Yet, there is limited work on the association between perceived ethnic discrimination and smoking among this health disparities group. Building from initial work that has demonstrated a relationship between perceived ethnic discrimination and smoking abstinence expectancies, the present study sought to explore mechanisms by which perceived ethnic discrimination may be related to cigarette dependence. Specifically, we tested the indirect effect of perceived ethnic discrimination on cigarette dependence through smoking abstinence expectancies (i.e., negative mood, somatic symptoms, harmful consequences, and positive consequences) among Latinx persons who smoke (N = 338; M age = 35.53 years; SD = 8.65; age range 18–61; 37.3% female). Results indicated that abstinence expectancies related to harmful consequences was a statistically significant underlying factor between the experience of perceived discrimination and cigarette dependence (b = 0.39, SE = 0.16, CI95% = 0.08, 0.71, CSE = 0.14). Overall, the present study suggests that smoking abstinence expectancies pertaining to harmful consequences may be a point of intervention for Latinx persons seeking to reduce or quit smoking. Future research is needed to extend the generalizability of these findings by corroborating the mediational role of abstinence expectancies related to harmful consequences across Latinx persons of varying cigarette use severity levels over time. • Smoking withdrawal can impact sensorimotor filtering. • Sensorimotor deficits during smoking quit attempts may be a marker of lapse risk. • Sensorimotor filtering deficits may be a target for smoking cessation interventions. Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is a measure of sensorimotor filtering thought to shield the processing of initial weaker auditory stimuli from interruption by a later startle response. Previous studies have shown smoking withdrawal to have a negative impact on sensorimotor filtering, particularly in individuals with psychopathology. Because tobacco use may alleviate sensory and sensorimotor filtering deficits, we examined whether smoking withdrawal-induced changes in PPI were associated with maintenance of smoking abstinence in trauma-exposed individuals with and without PTSD who were attempting to quit smoking. Thirty-eight individuals (n = 24 with current or past PTSD; 14 trauma-exposed healthy controls) made an acute biochemically-verified smoking cessation attempt supported by 8 days of contingency management (CM) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for smoking. Participants completed a PPI task at the pre-quit baseline, 2 days post-quit, and 5 days post-quit. Post-quit changes in PPI were compared between those who remained abstinent for the first 8-days of the quit attempt and those who lapsed back to smoking. PPI changes induced by biochemically-verified smoking abstinence were associated with maintenance of abstinence across the 8-day CM/CBT-supported quit attempt. As compared to those who maintained tobacco abstinence, participants who lapsed to smoking had significantly lower PPI at 2 and 5 days post-quit relative to baseline. Thus, among trauma-exposed individuals, decreases in PPI during acute smoking cessation supported by CM/CBT are associated with lapse back to smoking. Interventions that improve PPI during early smoking abstinence may facilitate smoking cessation among such individuals who are at high risk for chronic, refractory tobacco use. • Multiple smoking-cessation interventions exist and during the past twenty years there has been mounting evidence demonstrating their positive effects in pregnant women. • However, interventions and social societies have evolved, and findings, especially in terms of digital and psychosocial interventions, cannot always be extrapolated over time or across populations. • This work presents an update of the existing evidence on all competing smoking cessation interventions and explores the moderator factors. To carry out a systematic review of systematic reviews with an update of the existing evidence relating to a broad range of smoking cessation interventions, including psycho-social, digital and pharmacologic interventions, for pregnant women. Search was conducted in March 2022 in PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane in two stages: 1) a search of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, published from January 2012 through January 2022; 2) an update of those that fulfilled eligibility criteria reproducing the primary search strategy. We selected randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effectiveness of pharmacological, digital, and psychosocial interventions in aged 18 years and over who were daily smokers, and compared these with routine care, less intense interventions or placebo. Data from eligible studies were manually extracted by two authors and reviewed by a third. The quality of the reviews was evaluated using the AMSTAR scale, and risk of bias was measured with the Rob-2 tool and GRADE level of evidence. The meta-analysis included 63 RCTs (n = 19849 women). The interventions found to be effective were: financial incentives (RR:1.77; 95%CI:1.21–2.58), counseling (RR:1.27; 95%CI:1.13–1.43) and long-term nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) (RR:1.53; 95%CI:1.16–2.01). Short-term NRT, bupropion, digital interventions, feedback, social support, and exercise showed no effectiveness. The GRADE level of evidence was moderate-to-high for all interventions, with the exception of long-term NRT. Non-pharmacological interventions for smoking cessation are the most effective for pregnant women. The moderator analysis suggests that pregnant women of low socioeconomic status might benefit less from smoking cessation interventions than women of a high socioeconomic status. • Little is known about the development of vaping dependence. • This study found that vaping dependence develops over a longer time than smoking. • Smokers develop milestones of frequency faster than non-smokers. • However, non smokers develop other measures faster. There is considerable controversy about the development of dependence among e-cigarette users. This study describes the average amount of time using e-cigarettes before dependence milestones emerge and the differences in developing dependence between e-cigarette users who smoke cigarettes compared to those who do not. Adolescents and young adults aged 16–25 living in Canada were recruited into an online survey in 2021. Current (past-month) e-cigarette users completed 15 items assessing dependence from the Penn-State Electronic Cigarette Dependence Index and the E-cigarette Dependence Scale for a total of 12 behavioural (e.g., difficulty refraining from vaping) and 3 frequency (e.g., using e-cigarette daily, weekly, or monthly) indicators of dependence milestones. Number of years after e-cigarette onset at which the cumulative probability of attaining each milestone was 25 % was computed. Among 1205 participants, most (80.6 %) were female, 73.7 % were Caucasian, and 49.7 % resided in Ontario. Ten of the 12 e-cigarette use milestones were attained by 25 % of respondents 2 years after starting vaping except for daily cigarette use (2.5 years after onset) and waking at night to vape (5.6 years after onset). Within the entire study population, frequency milestones (weekly, monthly, daily e-cigarette use) were attained faster by ever-smokers (hazard ratio compared to attainment by never-smokers: 1.12, 1.21, and 1.28 respectively), whereas for at least monthly users, behavioural milestones were attained faster by never-smokers. Many current e-cigarette users developed symptoms of e-cigarette dependence between two and five years since onset. IntroductionPosttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a risk factor for tobacco addiction. The majority of research on PTSD and smoking has been conducted with men, particularly combat veterans, and little is known about the association among women. In a clinical sample of women civilian smokers with serious mental illness (SMI), we examined the prevalence of PTSD symptomatology and associations with physical and mental health functioning, co-occurring substance use, nicotine dependence, and readiness to quit smoking.Methods376 adult women smokers aged 18-73 were recruited from 7 acute inpatient psychiatry units and screened by diagnostic interview for current PTSD symptomatology (PTSD(+)). In multiple regressions, we examined the associations of screening PTSD(+) with physical and mental health functioning; past-month drug use; past-year substance use disorders; nicotine dependence and readiness to quit smoking.ResultsNearly half the sample (43%) screened PTSD(+), which was significantly associated with the use of stimulants (OR=1.26) and opiates (OR=1.98), drug use disorders (OR=2.01), and poorer mental health (B=-2.78) but not physical health functioning. PTSD(+) status was unrelated to nicotine dependence, but predicted greater desire to quit smoking (B=2.13) and intention to stop smoking in the next month (OR=2.21). In multivariate models that adjusted for substance use disorders, physical and mental health functioning, and nicotine dependence, screening PTSD(+) remained predictive of greater desire and intention to quit smoking.ConclusionPTSD symptomatology was common in our sample of women smokers with SMI and associated with not only worse substance use and mental health, but also greater readiness to quit smoking, suggesting the need for and potential interest in integrative PTSD-addiction treatment among women.

ObjectiveSmoking and alcohol use are highly related; as such the present study investigated whether alcohol use is associated with failure in tobacco cessation attempts. We first examined the self-reported drinking behavior and smoking over the course of a year at a basic level. Next, we addressed two hypotheses to characterize this relationship at a deeper level: (Hypothesis 1) Alcohol use would be lower for those who attempted to quit smoking (quit for one or more days) during the year compared to those who never quit, and (Hypothesis 2) for those who relapsed to smoking after a quit increases in alcohol consumption would be positively associated with increases in smoking.MethodSubjects were participants in two smoking cessation programs. One group of participants (N=139) was part of a smoking cessation study in alcohol dependent smokers in early recovery and the other group of participants (N=163) was drawn from a smoking cessation study for HIV positive smokers. H1 was tested using t-tests. For H2, a time series analysis examined relationships between smoking and alcohol use within person over a one year period. For H1 and for H2, the analyses utilized bivariate time series procedures. Timeline follow-back data allowed for detailed daily reports of both tobacco and alcohol use.ResultsIn the overall sample, there was no difference in alcohol use between those who stopped smoking and those who never stopped. However, when broken up by study, a difference was found in the alcohol dependent sample such that mean drinks were higher for those who stopped compared to those who never stopped smoking (H1). The results indicated a high number of positive significant cross-correlations between tobacco and alcohol use such that one substance predicted current, as well as past and future use of the alternate substance. Same-day cross-correlations were the most common, and dissipated with time (H2).ConclusionsThis analysis provided insights into the proximal influence of one substance on the other. Alcohol is related to relapse in smoking cessation attempts. It is important that smoking cessation efforts in alcohol using populations consider alcohol use in treatment.

BackgroundThis is the first study to examine predictors of successful cessation in African American (AA) light smokers treated within a placebo-controlled trial of bupropion.MethodsWe analyzed data from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of bupropion and health education for 540 African American light smokers. African American light smokers (≤10 cigarettes per day, cpd) were randomly assigned to receive 150mg bid bupropion SR (n=270) or placebo (n=270) for 7weeks. All participants received health education counseling at weeks 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7. Using chi-square tests, two sample t-tests, and multiple logistic regression analyses, we examined baseline psychosocial and smoking characteristics as predictors of cotinine-verified 7-day point prevalence smoking abstinence among study participants at the end treatment (Week 7) and at the end of follow-up (Week 26).ResultsParticipants who received bupropion were significantly more likely to quit smoking compared to those who received placebo (OR=2.72, 95% CI=1.60-4.62, P=0.0002). Greater study session attendance (OR=2.47, 95% CI=1.76-3.46, P=0.0001), and smoking non-menthol cigarettes increased the likelihood of quitting (OR=1.84, 95% CI=1.01-3.36, P=0.05); while longer years of smoking (OR=0.98, 95% CI=0.96-1.00, P=0.05) and higher baseline cotinine (OR=0.97, 95% CI=0.95-0.99, P=0.002) significantly reduced the odds of quitting at Week 7. Conversely, at the end of follow-up (Week 26), treatment with bupropion vs. placebo (OR=1.14, 95% CI=0.65-2.02, P=0.64) was not significantly associated with quitting and type of cigarette smoked (menthol vs. non-menthol) did not appear in the final logistic regression model. Greater study session attendance (OR=1.96, 95% CI=1.44-2.66, P=0.0001); BMI (OR=1.03, 95% CI=1.00-1.07, P=0.04); and weight efficacy (OR=1.03, 95% CI=1.01-1.05, P=0.01) increased the likelihood of quitting at Week 26. Similar to our findings at Week 7, longer years of smoking (OR=0.96, 95% CI=0.94-0.99, P=0.01) and higher baseline cotinine (OR=0.97, 95% CI=0.95-0.99, P=0.02) significantly reduced the odds of quitting at Week 26.ConclusionsBaseline cotinine levels, number of years smoked and study session attendance are associated with both short- and long-term smoking cessation, while bupropion and the type of cigarette smoked were associated with quitting on short term only.

Introduction: With recent policy changes around medicinal cannabis in Australia, there is concern about the influence of changing norms of cannabis use on adults who are actively parenting., Methods: This repeated cross-sectional population study used National and Drug Strategy and Household Surveys to estimate the changes and correlates of cannabis-related attitudes (support of legalisation, approve of regular use, would try or use if legal) among Australian parents from 2016 to 2019., Results: The estimated proportion of parents who supported legalisation and approved regular cannabis use increased significantly. Parents who would try cannabis if it was legal grew from 5.9% (95 %CI: 5.2, 6.7) to 8.1% (95 %CI: 7.2, 9.0). Parents who said they would use cannabis more often increased from 1.6 (95 % CI: 1.2, 1.9) to 2.9 (95 %CI: 2.4, 3.4), an 81% jump in the three years. The strongest associations were observed between a very high level of psychological distress and regular smoking and drinking. For example, people with a very high level of psychological distress were 2.16 times (95 %CI: 1.42, 3.28) and 2.48 times (95 %CI: 1.61, 3.83) more likely to approve legalisation and regular cannabis use, respectively. Daily drinking was associated with higher odds of trying cannabis (OR = 1.66; CI: 1.25-2.20)., Discussion and Conclusion: The proportion of parents who would try or use cannabis more often represents a sizeable pool of potential new and frequent users. This highlights the need for education and intervention strategies for parents who use cannabis and care for young children. Research is limited regarding adolescents' and young adults' (AYA) patterns, methods of, and reasons for cigarette or e-cigarette cessation. Further, while adults may try to use e-cigarettes to quit combustible cigarettes, little is known about how adults then quit e-cigarettes. This study utilizes a national, cross-sectional online survey of 6131 diverse participants aged 13-40 years to examine reasons for quitting e-cigarettes or cigarettes, quit methods, and quit attempt outcomes among AYAs and adults. In our sample, 3137 (51.2%) had ever used an e-cigarette, of whom 2310 (37.7%) were aged 13-24 years and 827 (13.5%) were 25-40 years old; 2387 (38.9%) had ever used a combustible cigarette (1440 [23.5%] were 13-24 years old and 947 [15.4%] were 25-40 years old). Among e-cigarette ever-users, 39.4% of 13-24-year-olds intended to quit in the next 6 months, and 36.9% had a serious plan for quitting in the next 30 days; 25.2% wanted to decrease the amount they used while 34.8% wanted to quit completely. Similar rates were found among e-cigarette ever users aged 25-40 years, as well as past 30-day e-cigarette users, cigarette ever-users, and past 30-day cigarette users across all ages. "Cold turkey" (41.0%) followed by "tried to cut down slowly by vaping/smoking less often or fewer puffs" (25.5%) was the most common quit method among e-cigarette ever-users and cigarette ever-users of all ages. Smoking prevalence among Vietnamese American males remains higher than the U.S. general population. This study examined the associations of individual and family factors with quit intention among Vietnamese male smokers in California to guide intervention development to reduce their smoking prevalence. Data for Vietnamese male current smokers (n=234) in the 2008 California Vietnamese Adult Tobacco Use Survey (N=1101 males) were analyzed to describe quit intention and previous quit attempts. One-third of Vietnamese male smokers (33%) had no intention to quit at any time, 36% intended to quit soon (in the next 30 days), and 31% intended to quit later (beyond the next 30 days). Half (51.7%) of the sample was in "precontemplation," indicating no intention to quit within 6 months. Many (71%) had made a serious quit attempt in the past year, but 68% of those who tried to quit used no cessation assistance. Multivariate logistic regression adjusting for age, depression, smoking intensity, nicotine dependence, health knowledge, children in the household and home smoking ban revealed that having smoking-related family conflicts and a quit attempt in the past year with or without assistance were independently associated with an intention to quit either in the next 30 days or later. Higher education was associated with no intention to quit. Findings underscore the importance of designing strategic interventions that meet the needs of smokers at both individual and family levels to promote quit intention and to facilitate successful quitting in this population.

This study examined the moderating role of gender in the association between smoking status and depression in a nationwide convenience sample of Chinese American current, former, and never smokers (N=1393). Participants were recruited in smoker-supporter dyads. Multilevel modeling was used to take into account the dyadic nature of the data. Depressive symptoms were measured by a 10-item CES-D (Center of Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale). Results showed significant effects of smoking status by gender interaction and smoking status on depression after adjusting for acculturation and social support. Among Chinese females, current smokers reported elevated depression level than both former and never smokers. Among Chinese males, current smokers reported more depressive symptoms when compared to former smokers only. Chinese females reported higher depression level than males among current smokers; no gender difference in depression was observed among former or never smokers. The association between smoking and depression is moderated by gender among Chinese Americans where substantial gender difference in smoking prevalence exists. Findings highlight the importance of addressing depression in treating tobacco use among Chinese American smokers, especially among females.

The brief version of the Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives (B-WISDM) is a well-established instrument to measure the multidimensional nature of nicotine dependence. However, no previous research has assessed its psychometric properties in the Spanish context. The aim of the present study was to analyze the factor structure and measurement invariance across gender of this instrument among Spanish smokers from the general population. This cross-sectional study assessed 480 smokers through an online questionnaire including information on tobacco use and several nicotine dependence measures. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was used to assess the factorial structure of the Spanish B-WISDM, its internal consistency, measurement invariance across gender and convergent validity with the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) and the Glover-Nilsson Smoking Behavioral Questionnaire (GN-SBQ) scores. Results indicate that the eleven correlated factors solution had a better fit when compared to the other tested models (two correlated factors and two second-order factors with eleven first-order correlated factors solution), remaining such structure invariant across gender. Internal consistency of the scale was high (α = 0.950; dimension α values ranged between 0.657 and 0.921). Overall scores and dimensions of the scale significantly and positively correlated with other nicotine dependence measures (except for Social/Environmental Goads and FTND). This is the first version of the B-WISDM validated to assess nicotine dependence with a multidimensional perspective within the Spanish culture. Results show adequate psychometric properties regarding its factor structure and measurement invariance across gender, supporting its utility to evaluate the motives driving tobacco use among Spanish smokers from the general population. • We examined opioid misuse incidence by cigarette smoking status. • Opioid misuse incidence was higher for persons who currently smoked vs did not smoke. • Persons who smoked were more likely to start opioid misuse vs those who never smoked. • There was a decrease in opioid misuse incidence over time. The combination of opioid misuse and cigarette smoking contributes to increased morbidity and mortality compared to each substance use alone. We estimated the incidence of opioid misuse for persons who currently or formerly smoked versus never smoked. Data came from the 2015–2020 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health cross-sectional surveys of US civilians aged 12+ (n = 315,661). Weighted opioid misuse incidence and average time between cigarette use initiation and opioid misuse initiation were calculated annually by smoking status. Logistic regression models tested time trends in incidence by smoking status. Overall, 0.75% of persons initiated opioid misuse per year; opioid misuse incidence was 1.35% for those who currently smoked cigarettes, 0.54% for those who formerly smoked, and 0.67% for those who never smoked. For persons who currently smoked and misused opioids (1.50%), 95.08% smoked prior to opioid use. The average time between smoking followed by opioid misuse was 12.93 years and for opioid misuse followed by smoking was 4.36 years. Persons who currently smoked were more likely to initiate opioid misuse than those who had never smoked (AOR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.60, 2.06). There was a decrease in the opioid misuse incidence over time (AOR = 0.90; 95% CI: 0.85, 0.92), which did not differ by smoking status. Persons who currently smoked cigarettes, relative to those who never smoked, were more likely to initiate opioid misuse. As most individuals smoked before opioid misuse, it may be useful for primary prevention efforts to decrease opioid misuse initiation by focusing on smoking status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PubMed, MEDLINE, and EMBASE databases were searched in November 2022 to systematically review studies focused on intentions, attempts, and successful e-cigarette use cessation. Three authors independently reviewed the full-texts of the initial pool of potentially eligible articles. Narrative data synthesis was conducted, and the risk of bias was evaluated. A total of 12 studies were selected for review, 7 of which were experimental and 5longitudinal. The majority of the studies focused on participants' intentions to quit e-cigarette use. The experimental studies varied in sample size, intervention type, and length of participant follow-up. Findings across the experimental studies were mixed, with only one full-fledged trial having examined cessation as an outcome. The experimental studies that assessed cessation outcomes utilized mobile technology as an intervention tool. Results from longitudinal studies indicated sociodemographic characteristics (gender, race/ethnicity), vaping frequency, and cigarette smoking status as predictors of intentions, attempts and e-cigarette use cessation. This review highlights the current paucity of methodologically rigorous research on e-cigarette use cessation. Our findings suggest that vaping cessation programs that employ mobile health technology to provide personalized cessation services may help promote intentions, attempts, and e-cigarette use cessation. Limitations of the current studies on vaping cessation include small sample sizes, heterogeneous cohorts that limit comparisons, and inconsistent ways of assessing vaping cessation. Research that explores the clinical relevance of subclinical depressive symptoms and smoking is primarily focused on smoking cessation. We examine whether depression symptoms vary across an array of biological (carbon monoxide boost), behavioral (Fagerström Test of Nicotine Dependence, cigarettes per day, smoking topography), and psychological smoking-related outcomes (Questionnaire on Smoking Urges, Withdrawal Symptoms Checklist) in non-treatment-seeking smokers. Baseline data were pooled from three research trials with identical procedures designed to assess individual smoking behavior using smokers preferred cigarette brands. Depression symptom level (asymptomatic, subsyndromal, syndromal) was defined using established Center for Epidemiological Depression Scale (CES-D) cutpoint criteria. Smokers were instructed to smoke as usual for one-week. At the beginning and end of the baseline period, nicotine dependence, smoking topography, CO boost, desire to smoke, anticipation of positive reinforcement, negative affect, and withdrawal were measured. Ordinary least squares linear regression models were used to test the association between depression symptom level and outcome measures adjusting for sex and education (N = 355). The results revealed no differences in topography measures, cigarettes per day and FTND. Smoking withdrawal and smoking urges were higher among both individuals with subsyndromal symptoms and syndromal depression symptoms compared to those who were asymptomatic. Individuals with subsyndromal depressive symptoms experienced higher smoke exposure and higher relief from negative affect. Increased smoke exposure, greater withdrawal symptoms and urges to smoke, and anticipation of negative affect relief among smokers with subsyndromal depression symptoms suggest that depression symptoms need not reach syndromal levels to alter smoking-related outcomes.
